It’s customized to you in the sense that you can pick your own classes and then also meet new people, whether they’re members of our chamber or are other guests, because we will have a lot of networking time between the breakfast and the lunch and then in between sessions as well.”

Viewpoints in Tandem, featuring the work of Jen van der Meij and her 12-year-old daughter Violet van der Meij will open with a First Friday Reception on Oct. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mulberry Art Studios, located in historic downtown Lancaster at 19-21 N. Mulberry St. Jen is a Lancaster-based fine artist with a degree in visual communication and graphic design. For this exhibition, she worked primarily in acrylic and oil. Beyond painting, Jen is a creative director in the advertising industry, a photographer and a published children’s book illustrator. Guided by the belief that art should be accessible to everyone, she creates works in a variety of sizes and mediums and offers prints to ensure her art reaches a wider audience.
Violet brings a fresh point of view to the world of art. From her earliest days of scribbling with crayons to building with Legos as a toddler, Violet has always been drawn to creating. Today, her creativity spans painting, drawing, pottery and even nail art.
This exhibition marks Violet’s first formal art show, a milestone on a path she hopes will lead to a lifelong career in the arts, including owning her own studio one day.
Viewpoints in Tandem will be on exhibit at Mulberry throughout October, and those wishing to view it after the opening can contact Stephanie.

geared towards business owners, but also if you’re a professional and you work for a larger company. You will be able to network with other folks in the area and learn something applicable that you can walk away with. We want people to be able to go back to their business or back to their company and have some tactics that they can start working in their business right away.”
Attendees will be able to choose three of the five one-hour workshops. “We did come up with some topics, had people vote, and then we did the same thing this year, and we also took feedback from last year to incorporate to this year,” said Willis. “We wanted to make sure that the content was tailored to our membership, even though the conference is open to people outside of our membership as well, so that we were on point in delivering content that people want to see. We also want to provide a variety because this isn’t specifically just a marketing conference, so not all of it is marketing related. We want it to be applicable to businesses of all sizes, whether you’re a solopreneur or you have 10 employees.”
The workshops are “Avoiding HR Nightmares” with speaker Leslie Wireback of Wireback Works,
“Budgeting” with speaker Kyle Beltle of Proactive CPA, “Customer Experience: Deliver 5-Star Service That Keeps People Talking & Sending You Referrals!” by Cody Helm of Helm Construction Company, “Decode & Deliver: Selling to Every Personality Style With Confidence” with speaker Sheila Jones of Whicked Results, and “Step Back to Move Forward: Planning with Clarity & Intent” by Matt Musser with Rooted Growth Strategies.
“We wanted to focus on having expert-led workshops,” Willis said. “The people that we have speaking are professionals in that field that they’re speaking on.”
After the workshops, there will be a panel discussion about artificial intelligence.
“It’s affordable, buffet lunch, and it’s local,” Willis said of the conference. “We’ve found that with a lot of conferences, you are going to Philly or Baltimore, big cities, and you are traveling. We wanted to make something hyperlocal, so that it’s accessible to everyone, both location-wise and pricing-wise.”
The SLCCC chose to host a professional development conference after receiving a grant. “We applied to a grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation, and we got a grant

for $5,000,” Phipps said. “One of the things we said with was that we would love to have a professional development conference right here in Lancaster. It could be costly to travel to Philly, travel to Harrisburg, some of these bigger cities, and we really wanted to bring something close to home geared towards small businesses and something very affordable. A lot of the times attending conferences can be in the thousands of dollars just to get tickets, not including travel when staying overnight. With the Lancaster County Community Foundation grant, we were able to do that, and it was such a success we want to keep it going.”
There are no geographic restrictions. “We like to say that our primary area is south of Route 30, but we have members from all
over,” Phipps said. “We do have some crossover folks that are in the northern end of the county. We have some from the neighboring counties. We’ve had guests come up from like the Maryland area, so it’s not only geared towards the southern net, but that’s primarily where we focus our marketing, and are the school districts that we support with our scholarships are south of Route 30 line.”

The conference is an ideal fit for the group’s goals. “We revamped our mission and our core values this year, which is really exciting,” said Phipps. “We really want to create affordable opportunities. I think that affordability fits in with our entrepreneurial spirit. We want to be approachable. We know that a lot of businesses just starting out don’t always have several hundred dollars to invest in being a part of a chamber, so keeping our membership dues low is really important to us, and then keeping our events free or low cost is incredibly important to us as well, without sacrificing quality of course.”

History Group Sets Meeting
The WWII Oral History Group will hold its next meeting on Monday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. at a new location, Heritage Hotel, 500 Centerville Road, Lancaster.
The guest speaker will be Susan Taylor, who was hired
at Eastern Aircraft in Baltimore after defense training school as an aircraft riveter.
The group’s meetings are free and open to anyone who has an interest and appreciation for World War II history. For more information, call 717-319-3430.
session will start Thursday, Jan. 29.
The choirs are open to every kid regardless of location. “I think it’s important for families to know that by joining a choir here, it doesn’t mean you’re leaving your church,” Wieand said. “This is just like a a sports program that’s out at a rec league, and you’re just gaining skills to be able to use back at your school. This is here for the whole community.”
The choir rehearsals will culminate with a free concert at Grace Community Church on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. “That’s open to the community for free, and the entire worship night is led by the kids and teens,” said Wieand.
The choirs are celebrating their fifth anniversary. Wieand has led the kids’ music program and the kids’ Sunday morning worship at Grace Community Church for 13 years.
“When we expanded the (church) building, when we were gifted this, we wanted to be able to help other churches who may not have the facilities or the time to be able to help their raise their kids up to be the future worship leaders,” Wieand said. “The church
is going to need the next generation of leaders and pastors and worship leaders.”
Practices are designed to be inspirational, educational, and enjoyable. “(Participants) will learn the worship songs that they’re going to be leading in the concert, and they’re kids so they need to break up their time of rehearsals,” Wieand said. “In the middle of it, my husband (Matt), who is a science teacher at Martin Meylin Middle School, does the Bible devotions with science object lessons. Some things explode, and he maybe sets things on fire. There’s lots of excitement, and it really captures the kids’ attention, and they remember those things. When they’re going home, they’re sharing those stories with their families or their friends at school. It’s a way that they can share the Gospel without just telling something they experienced in a different way.”
Wieand’s aunts Janet Zeager and Joyce Speer also assist. “They’re using their gifts of loving on kids when they come in, they’re greeting them, welcoming them, and just helping them, especially the kindergartners,” Wieand said. “This is, for
some of them, their first activity that they’ve been signed up for. We just find such joy in helping kids just feel excited to be here. We want the kids to grow confidence and not feel nervous by making it a relaxed environment.”
The choirs’ devotion series is called “Vibe Check.” “We can only be effective as Christians if we are constantly reflecting on how we are interacting and how we’re going about the day to day,” Wieand said. “Each week we’re going to focus on different things that help us to make sure our attitude is reflecting Christ. And it’s a good lesson for adults, so as we’re teaching it, it challenges us as well.”
Wieand is doing what she loves and loving what she does. “My life verse is 1 Peter 4:10, using whatever gifts the Lord has given you to serve others as good stewards of his grace in our lives,” she said. “The gifts that I have are teaching and music. That’s my background. I went to college and have my master’s in vocal performance, and I had a private vocal studio here in the community for 19 and a half years and just have a love for teaching.” She continued, “I can see the importance of the adult Christians that were in my life beyond my family growing up and feel that that’s part of what the Lord’s design is for our kids is - to surround them with positive Christian influences to support families and to support them. I look back at some of my favorite music teachers at church and just think about how they really made an impact in my life and gave me confidence in pursuing and using gifts that the Lord gave.”

Mennonite Life
“I think that Maize & Snitz is a wonderful time to learn about both the 18th-century Swiss-German Mennonite immigrant culture and also the local Susquehanna-Conestoga culture, (who were) longtime neighbors, and you see them both at once,” Mennonite Life educator
Lydia Nolt said. “This is something unique in that it’s not just your typical fall fest or farm show. You are getting the local history connecting with these local routes. You get to see some really cool demonstrators and craftspeople. There are fun activities, and if you’ve never connected with the local Indigenous history, it’s also a great opportunity to do that just in a very accessible way. It’s going to be a fun time.”
Nolt noted that there will be a wide variety of demonstrators and vendors around the Herr House and also around the Lancaster Longhouse.
“We will have 18th-century clothing demonstrations,” she said. “We’ll have Bridget Graff doing blacksmithing. She does really great work. We will have apple butter making. We will have people using our historic bake oven making some baked goods. We will have around the longhouse, we will have flintknapping. We will have someone
talking about Indigenous food ways and doing a cooking demonstration.”
There will be food for sale, including sausage sandwiches, snacks, and fry pies.
There will also be activities for children, including Indigenous games and Colonial games. “We will have a fraktur activity, which is the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch folk art drawing,” Nolt said.
“We will have an activity to explore the orchard, and we’ll also have a scavenger hunt for kiddos that explores the whole campus.”
Indigenous storyteller Barry Lee will sing, and a group will perform songs in German.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to visit the facility’s Colonial heirloom garden and the Three Sisters garden, both of which will be full of plants.
There will also be a silent auction. “All of the items that are part of this silent auction were donated by volunteers and friends of the museum,” said Nolt. “That will include some really wonderful pieces of artwork, including one from Barry Lee. We’re excited about that.”
Mennonite Life will display items from its collection - one rare book printed in Europe and one rare book

printed in America, both related to the Herr familydesigned to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Anabaptism.
There will be discussions about restoration and the important role that restoration and preservation play in keeping a historic
house museum alive and right, Nolt said. She added that Mennonite Life is grateful for the event’s sponsors - Sight & Sound, Berks Homes, Cherry Hill Orchards, S. Clyde Weaver, Herr’s Foods, and Dominion Pest Control.

from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. from Oct. 16 to Dec. 11. Attendance is required for the dress rehearsal on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 13, and the performances on Dec. 14 at 4 and 7 p.m.

The Shoppes at Miller’s
To Host Artisan Days
Miller’s Smorgasbord has announced the return of Artisan Days, a unique opportunity to meet some Lancaster County artisans and experience their craftsmanship firsthand. The events will take place on Saturdays, Oct. 4 and 25, from 2 to 6 p.m. The Shoppes at Miller’s includes Anna’s Gifts & Sundries, Locally Made Food Shop, The Quilt Shop at Miller’s, Ruthie’s and Miller’s Smorgasbord.
On the Locally Made Food Shop deck, a select group of local artisans will showcase their work. There will also be food sampling of locally made foods.
Inside The Quilt Shop at Miller’s, there will be hand quilting demonstrations by local quilters.
Artisans who are currently planning to be at Artisan Days on Oct. 4 include Miesse Candies, a Lancaster County confectioner since 1875, who will offer small-batch chocolates and caramels; Handcrafted by Grace, which specializes in small-batch infused olive oils, balsamic vinegars and artisan spice blends; Lancaster County Shirt Co, a local apparel company that creates locally themed shirts; By Candle Light, which specializes in traditional farmhouse-style candles, handcrafted in the U.S. with 100% soy wax; and The Color Green, which creates one-of-a-kind, wirewrapped jewelry featuring hand-blown glass.
The following artisans will be featured on Oct. 25: E&A Candies, which handcrafts old-fashioned sweets like brittle, caramel corn and chocolate; Pepe Saya, which uses cream and milk from local Amish farms and batch churns and handpresses it to create butter and cheeses; Love, Libby Soaps, which are handcrafted in small batches using locally-sourced goat milk, essential oils and natural botanicals; and By Candle Light.
All artisan items will be available for purchase at Anna’s Gifts & Sundries, Locally Made Food Shop and The Quilt Shop at Miller’s. For more information, visit www.shoppes atmilllers.com.

Brethren Disaster Relief Auction Posted
The 48th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26 and 27, beginning at 9 a.m.
The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided nearly $20 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims and support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding efforts from disasters such as earthquakes in Haiti and tornadoes and floods in Pennsylvania.
Separate auctions will include a main auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a theme basket auction, two silent auctions, a heifer auction, a coin auction, a sporting goods auction, and a pole barn auction. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once.
Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A children’s store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, as well as face painting. A balloon artist will create balloon animals for the children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides and pony rides, the latter of which will be offered for a nominal donation.
Food options will include Amish soft pretzels and doughnuts, a cafeteria, a buffet breakfast, chicken potpie, chicken barbecue, and a food stand. Other auction activities will include an area for arts and crafts and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked goods, including homemade pies.
To find out more about the auction, visit www .brethrenauction.org, call 717-823-2745, or pick up an auction booklet at many local retailers.
