School Supplies Giveaway Planned No one knows yet what the 2020-21 school year will look like, but whatever happens, the leaders of L-S Together want to ensure that all students in the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District have the necessary supplies. “With the impact of COVID-19, we recognize the potential greater need to help families in the school district to have all the necessary school supplies for this upcoming school year,” said L-S board member Jared Yordy. “The L-S Together motto is ‘Pioneering Life Together,’ (and that) also applies even during pandemics.” An anonymous donor has pledged to match up to $2,500 in donations - for a total of $5,000 - in order to purchase school supplies for L-S students. The items will be distributed through a back-to-school curbside drivethrough event on Saturday, Aug. 15, from

8 to 11 a.m. The event will take place in the bus loop of Hans Herr Elementary School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. Donations may be made at www.ls together.org until Aug. 15. L-S Together founder and chair Jenice Weaver explained that the organization opted to purchase all of the supplies rather than ask community members to contribute items as a safety measure against COVID-19. The drive-through event will also be conducted in a way to ensure everyone’s safety. Changes to the Aug. 15 event are possible due to the impact and nature of the novel coronavirus, Yordy said. Readers may stay abreast of announcements by visiting the website or following L-S Together on Facebook and Twitter. The board members of L-S Together hope that by providing school supplies, parents and guardians of students will have one fewer

cause of anxiety. “We know the school district has been working hard to make plans in order to create a safe environment for the students this coming school year due to COVID-19,” Yordy added. “We appreciate all the time and effort (district leaders) are doing to plan this upcoming school year during these unprecedented circumstances.” For more information about the back-toschool event, readers may email office@ lstogether.org.

UDS Service Dogs will host its first golf outing on Friday, Aug. 28, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Program manager Lori Breece hopes it will become an annual event. “We have been trying to find a signature event

that can bring in strong revenue for our program and get the community engaged,” Breece remarked. Landis Communities offered pointers in planning the event. Scrolling through the Instagram account @thejujubeanbakery, viewers would be forgiven for thinking they were looking at cakes made by a professional with years of experience. The shaped cakes are impeccably cut, the piping is steady, and the chocolate ganache drips attractively. However, the mastermind behind these creations - Julianna Giunta of Willow Street - has never worked in a commercial kitchen. In fact, Julianna will celebrate her 15th birthday in August. Julianna is the daughter of Jon and Lauren Giunta, and she has helped Lauren in the kitchen for as long as she can remember. When Julianna was around age 11, her grandmother challenged her to make cupcakes from scratch using lemon and cream cheese. The resulting product was a hit. “I really enjoyed myself and everyone really liked them. I think that’s when I really started to fall in love with baking,” Julianna recalled. To develop her techniques, Julianna turned to YouTube videos and baking shows on television, including competitions and how-to episodes.
