The Next Gen Senior Services Inc. board members invite the entire community to join them as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of the senior center with an open house on Thursday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Light refreshments will be available for visitors, and live gospel-bluegrass music will be performed by an Amish duet. “We want to get the word out that the center is here for everybody at no charge,” said board president Debbie Wright-Neff. Anyone age 60 and over is eligible for membership in the senior center. Participants may come for one program or stay through the day and enjoy time with friends. All regular activities are free, although donations are
accepted to help keep the nonprofit center operating. The Next-Gen Senior Center is located within the Quarryville Fairgrounds at 184 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The center serves residents from as far as Willow Street and Gap. For those who do not drive, Red Rose Transit may be available for transportation. The center is open Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a wide range of activities. One of the most popular programs is the Geri-Fit exercise classes offered each morning, with a higher level dance-exercise program on Fridays and a yoga class each Monday. Also available to senior center members at no charge are morning aqua-aerobics classes at the nearby SECA Pool. “We like to refer to it as the active senior center,” Wright-Neff said. The Saddlebag Riders of Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries will host a biker breakfast on July 6 at Washington Boro Park. Everyone is welcome. By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“We had 70 people last year. It went really well,” said Saddlebag Riders TEAM president Chuck Moore, reflecting on last year’s biker breakfast. It was the second breakfast the Motorcyclists for Jesus Ministries (MJM) members
had held, but it was the first at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road, Washington Boro. “Since this is a popular riding route, we wanted to be a stop for them,” explained Saddlebag Riders member John Young. The park is located along the Susquehanna River, and the scenic See Biker Breakfast pg 8

Willow Valley Communities held a Cornhole for a Cause event on May 4 to benefit School District of Lancaster high school students. The money raised will help graduating seniors pay application fees and expenses associated with post-secondary education or pay for items needed to start a new job. The third Cornhole for a Cause event raised more than $8,000. To date, it has raised more than $22,000 and has helped approximately 75 students. The event took place in Chautauqua Hall. School District of Lancaster staff members participated by organizing their own team, headed by superintendent Damaris Rau. Willow Valley Communities residents, employees, families, and vendors made up the rest of the 18 teams participating in the tournament.
According to Rau, while a graduating senior may be accepted to a college or trade school, application fees, down payments, or other costs associated with the transition may be prohibitive enough to prevent the student from attending. School guidance counselors help the students with the process of determining what they need after graduation. The tournament is one of several initiatives of Willow Valley Communities to help children within the School District of Lancaster. Willow Valley residents tutor students in academics and music, and a pen pal program between students and residents helps students practice writing. The Sneakers for School Program has provided thousands of pairs of sneakers and socks for children in the district.

Other popular features of the center are the morning snack and the hot lunches every day. Lunch must be ordered by 9:30 a.m. of the preceding day. “It’s a good, balanced meal,” activities director Michelle Reeves said. This summer, the senior center has farm market vouchers available to seniors, provided by Lancaster County Office of Aging. Regular programs are supplemented by special activities, including field trips and informational programs. Other programs include music, health screenings, tax preparation assistance, Medicare information, and much more. The center is a spot for active
people to socialize and enjoy a full day. “We really strive to let people know we are here so they can make new friends. Some of them need somewhere to go where they can exercise for free. We have really good services to offer to the seniors. There are so many different personalities, you’re going to fit in somewhere,” manager Carly Wienand said. The board would like to see more people take advantage of the programs at the center. “Hopefully, people will come in and see what goes on,” Reeves said. The event is a fundraiser for Solid Rock, which operates a youth center at 34 E. State St., Quarryville. The organization provides after-school and summer programs for students in kindergarten through grade nine free of charge. Solid Rock’s mission is “to earn trust through authentic relationships so that lives can be changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” Price shared. Last year’s race attracted 178 participants and raised more than $7,000. “The first race went way better than I could have imagined,” Price commented. “It far exceeded my expectations. It was incredible to see all of the ways God’s hand was in it and how faithful He was through the process.” Based on last year’s turnout, the organizers are anticipating a higher number of registrants this year. To keep the event comfortable, participation has been capped at 300. “Otherwise, it would be too crowded,” Price explained. Price noted that the organizers received feedback from last year’s participants, and they have strived to make all of the suggested improvements, which even include additional trash cans after the water station. Pretzel City Sports will time the event this year. The winners will be split into age groups with medals for the first-place overall male and female finishers and the age-group winners; last year, prizes were awarded to only the top three overall male and female finishers. The half-mile race for youths
age 12 and under will take place at 10 a.m. and will also be updated. “We wanted to make the kids’ fun run more fun, so we will have bubbles, cookies, and even a special guest,” Price related. Finishers will receive a goodie bag and medals. Fun run entrants will not receive a T-shirt. Additionally, the 5K race and fun run will start at a different spot. The trailhead at 301 E. State St., Quarryville, is larger and offers more parking than the one used last year, Price said. The fundraising goal for the upcoming 5K is $15,000. Participants may seek sponsors to help Solid Rock reach its goal. Costs have been set to participate in the 5K and the fun run, with a discount for folks who register in teams of five or more. Online registration will close at midnight on Wednesday, July 31. Full price will be charged for 5K and fun run registration on Aug. 3. No team registration will be available at the event. To register, sponsor participants, or obtain more information, readers may visit www.solidrockquarryville.com/r un. Those with questions may call Solid Rock at 717-786-8007. Folks who would like to learn more about Solid Rock’s programs, including the art, cooking, and social programs offered this summer, may visit www.solidrockquarryville.com/ summer-programs. To make it easier for customers to find products that have been grown or produced in Pennsylvania, Giant Food Stores has introduced PA Preferred shelf tags at all of its 156 stores located within Pennsylvania. PA Preferred is the official brand of food and agricultural products grown, produced, or processed in Pennsylvania. Giant has supported the program, which is designed to help the state’s farmers and food suppliers grow their businesses, since its inception in 2004. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding recently joined Giant vice president and chief marketing officer Matt Simon at a press conference in Camp Hill to unveil the shelf tag program. More than 900 items, including meat, poultry, dairy, snacks, condiments, sauces, and even pet food, are now identified by tags
with the PA Preferred logo displayed at the shelf level, helping customers to identify Pennsylvania products. The PA Preferred shelf tags will be displayed in stores year-round. With the arrival of the local produce season in its stores, Giant also plans to recognize local farmers through a multifaceted marketing campaign that includes in-store signage and displays, social and digital media, TV and radio advertising, billboards, and the company’s instore Savory magazine. From farm names to state identifier stickers and imagery showcasing the season’s harvest, the campaign aims to highlight the stories behind the farms and people responsible for bringing the products to stores. view is attractive for both bikers and automobile drivers. People came from as far as Lebanon last year, John noted. This year’s breakfast will be held at the park on Saturday, July 6, from 7 to 11 a.m. Tank’s Taters will cook and sell a full breakfast, and folks may eat their meals in the pavilion. Members of the Saddlebag Riders will be available to talk with diners and offer bike blessings. Rita Young, who is married to John, noted that the event is casual, and while the group would love to discuss spiritual matters with attendees, the interaction will be optional. There will be no formal program. “They can get something to eat and keep going,” John added. Everyone is invited to the event, no matter how many wheels they arrive on. “Cages welcome,” he said, referring to automobiles in which drivers and passengers are enclosed. The breakfast will be held rain or shine. There is a cost for the meal. Additionally,
the Saddlebag Riders will accept donations for the Wounded Warrior Project. The Saddlebag Riders will not profit from the event. Instead, a chicken barbecue fundraiser for the Saddlebag Riders will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3. The group will also host a Wounded Warrior Project road rally on Saturday, Sept. 21. Details about both events will be announced later. The mission of MJM is to enjoy the sport of motorcycling and to share God’s love by assisting fellow motorcyclists with their personal and spiritual needs. Matthew 28:19 is the theme verse adopted by the Saddlebag Riders. Also known as the Great Commission, the verse relates the words of Jesus Christ when He charged His followers to make disciples. TEAM stands for “Telling Everyone About Messiah.” For more information about the group, readers may find “Saddlebag Riders” on Facebook or contact Moore at 717-224-8790 or chuckmoore 903@gmail.com.

est continually, however. “Fifteen years ago, the O-gauge trains were starting to get very sophisticated,” said Cole. “They had sound systems with realistic sounds,” he added, describing the chugging sounds and the noises of the compressors and the trains letting off steam. “They even had station announcements.” But O-gauge was eventually outdone again. “They started to miniaturize electronics and put them in HO, and I got back into that again,” said Cole with a chuckle. Cole was formally recognized as the museum’s Volunteer of the Year at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission ceremony in Harrisburg on April 27. He will be honored again at the Railroad Museum’s annual Members’ Day banquet in Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Cole noted that he has created layouts using a number of different train models and gauges over his years in model railroading. The first train he received was a Lionel Hudson 464 steam engine. “It was a big heavy thing,” recalled Cole. “It had a whistle, and it was originally for the Christmas tree, but I built a layout.” Because Cole is also a woodworker, he soon traded the train for a jigsaw. “That was the end of my Lionel train, but I got into HO size,” said Cole, who took over his father’s photo studio in the family basement for his first layout. Johnson Named To Dean’s List
Bill Cole of Lancaster was formally recognized as the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania Volunteer of the Year at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission ceremony in Harrisburg on April 27.

“I am a model railroader,” said Bill Cole proudly. “I love trains all the time.” A man who first fell in love with trains when he received one for Christmas at the age of 5 growing up in Minnesota could not resist visiting a railroad museum after moving to Lancaster. But making just the occasional visit to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, became a thing of the past when Cole retired. Instead, after picking up a volunteer brochure around 2012, Cole signed on to work in the museum archives. One day a week, he scans and catalogs photo collections and helps prepare documents and photos for sale. Cole appreciates the importance of this work. “Up in the archives, we can preserve what we’re working with for future generations,” he said, noting that it will be important to keep up with technical advancements. “Right now, we are putting it on a hard drive, but we will have to keep moving it,” he said. In addition to recognizing the significance of the work, Cole enjoys the benefits as only a model railroader can. “The archives gave me a chance to see pictures of real trains in their environments, and I can translate that into miniature,” said

Cole. “Model railroaders are out there looking at the real world to convert it to miniature.” Cole’s second day per week at the museum is devoted to the Pennsylvania Landscapes layout. “This layout is 18 years in the making,” explained Cole. The model layout offers a variety of scenes associated with the Pennsylvania landscape. “If you were traveling back in 1950 throughout Pennsylvania, these are the scenes you would see,” said Cole, who pointed out cities, railyards where trains that hauled were built, and a big city station that includes a window to the locations and happenings located underground. The layout also includes farmlands, rolling hills, mountains, and a mining town. “Here are the company-owned homes,” said Cole pointing to the row of similar houses. The layout has been a labor of love for Cole. “It was almost completed when I started volunteering here,” he said, noting that the trains on the layout were stopping unexpectedly and refusing to move. “I spent time rewiring the whole thing to reduce the complexity so it would run smoothly,” he said, adding that the layout is more detailed than others at the museum. “(The layout) doesn’t run unless (a volunteer) is here to run it because it is a little more complicated,” he said. “You can’t just turn it on and leave it.” Fortunately for both Cole and

coasts of the U.S. for enemy submarines. CAP, which is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, was officially established in December of 1941. Squadron 304, one of nearly 1,500 operating nationwide, is part of the 31st Wing, which is the Pennsylvania division of CAP. The 31st Wing was the second in the nation to become active. Nationally, the organization includes 58,000 senior members - those age 21 and over - and youth members - people ages 12 to 20. The weekly cadet program focuses on military leadership, character development, and physical fitness. Greg Sollenberger, who serves as aerospace education officer for the squadron, said that the participating cadets are also offered a monthly aerospace class that includes lessons ranging from rocketry to orientation flights. “Each cadet builds a rocket from a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) kit, said Sollenberger, who discusses a range of aerospace-related topics with the cadets. CAP members may also be called upon to help locate missing aircraft and persons. The organization may be contacted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, or the Air Force Rescue Coordinator Center for disaster response. “When an aircraft goes down, it has a device that emits a radio signal, explained Sollenberger, who added that getting a ground team together to trace the signal is one of the responsibilities of squadron members. Broad excitedly shared that a

Broad’s latest job at the Wing level is to start a drone search program. “We will be looking at aircraft that have crashed as observers, and we will be doing lost persons evaluations, explained Broad, who held the first training session for 24 volunteers at Hawk Mountain the first weekend in May. Cadets who are 16 years or older may be trained and certified to use the drones as technicians or observers. “(The) drones will be used for emergency services, and they don’t go beyond our visual line of sight, explained Broad. Broad said that the squadron is always in need of more adult volunteers. Volunteers must pass an
extensive background check. “You can come in here with nothing but a desire to help cadets, said Sollenberger, who added that training will be provided. CAP has the largest fleet of single-engine Cessnas in the world, boasting more than 550 aircraft. Squadron 304 does not yet own a plane, but members are hoping to procure one in the near future. The organization currently raises funds by parking cars at a number of local events, including the Lititz Craft Show, Community Days held at the airport in August, and at the Rough and Tumble Museum and Hospice auction. Award from pg 13 Fluck’s colleagues at Lampeter Elementary School describe her as tenacious and passionate about doing what is best for each child. Students describe her as kind, respectful, and smart, as well as someone who teaches them to make good choices. She describes herself as a lifelong learner who is always searching for new and different ways to teach. Fluck began her L-S career in 2005 as a long-term substitute first-grade teacher at Willow Street Elementary School. She transferred to Lampeter Elementary when Willow Street Elementary closed in 2008. Esbenshade-Fluck previously taught as a firstgrade classroom teacher as well as a secondand third-grade special education teacher at
Perryville Elementary School in Cecil County, Md. A Lancaster native, she is a graduate of Lancaster Country Day School, Elon College, and the University of Delaware. She currently resides in Lancaster city with her husband and two school-age sons. In addition to her classroom duties, Fluck is the first-grade team leader and chair of the school’s technology team. She is a member of several curricular committees, including STEM and TEAMS, and is known as the tech guru at Lampeter Elementary School. Each August, Fluck heads to Lancaster County Park in search of monarch caterpillars to bring to school so her new students can watch each transform into a chrysalis and then a butterfly. She sees the metamorphosis as an analogy both for her life as a teacher as well as for the lives of her young students.
