Martin Meylin OM team makes memories, friends
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Martin Meylin Middle School’s Odyssey of the Mind (OM) team left nothing to chance this time around.
The Martin Meylin squadeighth-graders Asha Lindskog, Lucy Gochnauer, Emma Cowan, and Aubrey Hikes; seventh-grader Avery Kalasinsky; and sixth-graders Sam Hughes and Judah Diffendarfer - took matters into its own hands.
After advancing to states the previous two years by winning a lottery for third-place finishers, the current team took did not need to rely on the luck of the draw.
Instead of advancing to states through a lottery, this year’s squad earned an automatic berth to the state competition by placing second in the East Central PA Region at Millersville University on March 8.
“This was a good one,” coach Tracey Harber said. “We were
happy about this one.”
The gifted education teacher noted that the lottery is conducted by pulling names out of a hat to fill open slots. “This year they earned it on their own,” she said.
Team members didn’t know what to think while they

lot of team bonding.”
anxiously awaited the results. “I looked over at Emma and I said, ‘So we either cooked or we’re cooked,’” Avery recalled.
Aubrey said, “They called third (place) and I thought, ‘Oh, we either didn’t do it, or we actually did pretty good.’ Then they called Martin Meylin (for second place), and I said, ‘What? What?’”
“You should’ve seen the look on our faces,” Avery said.
The prompt at regionals was
to retell the story of three constellations using a shooting star that changes appearance and positioning and a theatrical lighting effect. To retell the story, the Martin Meylin team created an aquarium that houses a fish that turns pink when it’s sick and is clear when healthy.
Aubrey, who has been a member of the OM team for three years, is impressed by the current version’s organizational skills. Busy with other responsibilities, Aubrey was recruited to join the OM team four days before the regional competition. She assisted with the production of the shooting star, which was composed of recyclable items, including hangers, a spool, a wooden pole, and a pulley system made of cardboard. “And a lot of hot glue,” Asha added. “Hot glue was our best friend.”
The shooting star was an integral part of the presentation. “We had to get really creative with it,” Asha said. “It is in four scenes, and you can’t hide it.”

“If you’re looking for a getaway that’s within driving distance of home, this is the perfect place to find it,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair. “Come here and see what’s right in your backyard.”
The PA Family Travel Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex, 75 Champ
Blvd., Manheim.
The event will feature free entry and free parking.
Organized by Where & When Pennsylvania, a free seasonal travel magazine, the PA Family Travel Fair will spotlight more than 50 vendors.
“We will have destination marketing organizations from all over the state,” Royal shared.

Museum posts day camps, trip
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will offer its Barons and Builders summer day camps from Tuesday to Friday, July 8 to 11, for kids ages 9 and 10 and from Tuesday to Friday, July 22 to 25, for kids ages 11 and 12. The camps will be held from 9 a.m. to noon each day.
Participants will experience the museum’s historic railroad equipment on behind-the-scenes guided tours inside and outside the museum, including the restoration shop and train yard. They also will visit the neighboring Choo Choo Barn, take a ride on the Strasburg Rail Road, build a Lego model, meet special guests, and more.
Spaces are limited. To register, visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Barons and Builders Summer Day Camp.” There is a fee, with a discount for members of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Members should use the discount code “Members25” at checkout.
The museum will also offer a Quebec and the Northern Tier Ramble from Tuesday, Sept. 9, through Monday, Sept. 15.
Activities during the trip will include a train ride on the Saratoga Corinth and Hudson Railway in Saratoga Springs, New York; a visit to the Exporail museum in Montreal; a guided tour of Montreal; a scenic train ride aboard Via Rail from Montreal to Quebec City; a guided tour of Quebec City; a drive along the Saint Lawrence River, with a variety of stops; a train ride and dinner on the Champlain Valley Dinner Train in Burlington, Vt.; and a visit to the University of Vermont’s Morgan horse farm in Middlebury, Vt. Also included are six nights’ hotel accommodations and six breakfasts, three lunches, and four dinners.

Fortuitously, when Aubrey, Asha, Avery, and their teammates were constructing the shooting star, they prepared for what could have been the worst-case scenario. When the shooting star didn’t work as planned during the region competition, the group improvised.
“We pretended there had been an explosion then switched to the next scene,” Avery said. It all turned into a happy accident. “That really kind of saved us,” Asha said. “It was a unique way to change it, and we kind of integrated it into our current star.”
“Improv is a big part of Odyssey of the Mind, being able to think quickly and creatively,” noted Avery.
Martin Meylin earned the top score in the long-term performance despite the star malfunctioning.
Avery worked on the OM project during the school’s Challenge block as part of an independent study project. “It gave me the free time to work on brain -
storming ideas that will benefit the team that we wouldn’t have time to do in practice,” she said. Odyssey of the Mind team members also have an opportunity to try new things. Harber is permitted to tell students how to do various tasks, but she is not allowed to do any of the work on the set.
Aubrey learned how to sew on a machine so she could make an astronomer’s costume. Her biggest compliment came from her grandmother, who enjoys sewing. “My grandma said, ‘I’m so proud of you,’” Aubrey recounted.
Most of all, the teammates enjoyed spending time with each other while sharing inside jokes and creating lasting memories. Judah and Samuel made shirts with fish puns on the front. Emma created what Asha called a “wellvolution” when a photo of a well went viral and inspired the team to include a drawing of a well in their set.
Team members made pendants and bracelets. “Teamwork is a huge part of OM,” Asha said. “We did a lot of team bonding. It always made me happier to be with OM. These guys are like my family.”
Martin Meylin was unable to advance to the world competition during the regional event April 5 at Pocono Mountain East.
Harber said she was grateful for the help of Martin Meylin German teacher Joe Mencarini, who was a chaperone for the team. “Joe has done so much more for the team over the years,” said Harber. “He has been my co-coach, sounding board, and driver for years, and a general source of merriment. Most of it was in English, but some of the dozen other languages

he speaks popped in, including Klingon.”
Harber said Odyssey of the Mind “is a creative, problem-solving competition for students from kindergartners to high school seniors.” Its slogan is “Hands-on for kids and handsoff for adults.”

we have representatives from across Pennsylvania, from northeast Pennsylvania to Bucks County and the Laurel Highlands.”
Several of the vendors have participated in the fair since its inception in 2018, while others are new this year.
“We have some historical railroads coming,” Royal remarked. “We have amusement parks, museums and historic sites.”
Many of the vendors will feature giveaways for items ranging from day passes to overnight trips.
The grand prize children’s giveaway will be an eight pack of all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park in Tipton.
The grand prize giveaway, sponsored by Visit Potter-Tioga, will feature a four-night stay for four at the Penn Wells Lodge in Wellsboro, plus vouchers for covered wagon tours, gift cards to local businesses and spending money for the trip.
Topaz Balloons will be on-site providing balloon art from 10 a.m. to noon, and face painting
from pg 1

will be offered by Jain Falcon from 1 to 3 p.m.
At noon, Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present an educational show.
“(The Clyde Peeling’s representative) usually brings big snakes and other reptiles,” Royal said. “Last year, he brought a baby crocodile. His show is very popular.”

Mascots - including Echo the bat from Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks as well as Johnny the Long John from Achenbach’s Pastrieswill also roam the event and will be available for pictures.
Royal initiated the idea for the PA Family Travel Fair in 2017 when she realized the wealth of vacation
resources right in our state.
“The state of PA markets to outside areas,” she said. “We’re not going to see commercials for our own state. I want to give people new ideas of places they can visit in their home state.”
According to the most recent

statistics, tourism brings in $76 billion to the Pennsylvania economy, Royal said.
“That’s ‘billion’ with a ‘b.’ Tourism is a big economic driver,” she stated. “It’s $4.7 billion in state and local taxes, and that’s huge. We want to keep those tax dollars here. We want to encourage people to keep their money in the state.”
And if you don’t want to travel far this summer, don’t worry. Local attractions will be represented at the fair as well. Elizabethtown-based Stone Gables Estate, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm in Ronks and Oregon Dairy in Lititz are just a few of the local participants.
Over the years, Royal has enjoyed watching people return annually to the event to learn more about what’s in our state, and she likes seeing people discover something new.
“I think people are shocked at all the things you can do in Pennsylvania,” she said. “People don’t know that Jimmy Stewart was from Indiana, Pa., and there is a whole museum dedicated to him there. They do an ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ festival in the winter. … We have beaches in Pennsylvania, too. Presque Isle Park in Erie has 13 beaches, including Sunset Beach, which has the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see.”
Above all, she noted, the PA Family Travel Fair is a family-friendly, fun way to learn more and find vacation ideas.
“There’s no selling, no pressure,” Royal said. “You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for anything. Just come, have a conversation with the vendors and pick up information to start planning your next trip.”

agriculture) that we do,” said Dominique Didier, vice president of Homefields’ board of directors and the chairperson of events. “We make it a fun day.”
Program coordinator Andrew Phillips and farm manager Tony Beers will lead tours of the certified organic farm at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m.
“We take you around the farm, explain what our farming practices are, how we treat the land, what types of crops we grow and how,” Phillips said. “You will get to see the full property and all the different projects we have going on. Things you might not see day to day as a customer but are part of our daily operation and outreach efforts. It is beautiful in spring. Everything’s blooming. It’s a fun time to get to see the whole property and experience the place.”
Beers will take visitors behind the scenes. “Everybody enjoys our organic vegetables, but we will give a peek under the hood and show how the vegetables are made,” he said. “We will explain how greenhouses work.”
Beers will explain the tilling process and how the equipment works. “People will get a sense of what farmers are doing to produce these wonderful vegetables that they’re eating every week,” he said. “It’s to build trust so people can see our farming practices and what it takes to have a clean farm.”
People will have the opportunity to explore the greenhouses, visit pick-your-own fields, and go home with a DIY project.
There will be a photo booth, a treasure hunt, crafts for families, and activities for kids. Families are welcome to hold a picnic. Koshary Station will be selling food, and Jimmy Juice will be on-site.
“The overarching goal is we want to welcome everyone to Homefields,” said Allison Hawthorne, president of the organization’s board of directors.
Hawthorne said the event “is not transactional,” but the CSA is how Homefields funds its purpose and mission.
Homefields is best known for its CSA, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Lettuce explain.
“We do a lot of things on this farm that people probably don’t realize,” Beers said. “We have high concentrations of extremely endangered plants that we’re propagating. We have high school kids with IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) who come every week and learn farming from us. We’ve got native plant flower gardens. There are opportunities for people to volunteer and be part of it. There are a lot of things that aren’t our CSA.”
The farm employs, houses, and provides opportunities to people with disabilities. Homefields’ workforce-training program gives high-schoolers served by IU13 the tools and experience they can use in greenhouses, nurseries, and farms.
The “home” in Homefields comes from the two houses on the property, which both have three people with disabilities living there. Homefields supports the licensed provider that supplies 24-hour staffing.
Cristian Phibbs is an employee who has an intellectual developmental difficulty and has become a valuable farmhand. “This is awesome. I came here because this is a nice place,” said Phibbs. “Now I get to work and socialize with people, which I did not get to do in my old jobs. And I get paid for it.”
Homefields provides workers like Phibbs with an opportunity to work in a competitive environment while learning skills. Among his many responsibilities are planting seeds, caring for the lawn, and picking fruits and vegetables. “I never understood this job before I came here. Now I do,” Phibbs said. “This is interesting to me. This job is better for me. I love it.”
There is another charitable component. After customers pick up their fruits and vegetables over weekends, the rest of the produce is given to Loft Community Partnership, which is in Millersville. Beers became emotional when detailing the food donations. “All of that food goes to the Loft, and they make sure it gets in the hands of people in our community who might be struggling,” he said. Phillips estimated the items donated by Homefields benefit 250 local families.

Volunteer Carol Welsh said, “When a group of people come together to support an organic farm, they get an opportunity to live out a mission that brings the community together. It’s unique. It doesn’t exist much anymore, so we’re proud to have everybody here.”
The Open Farm event is free, but registration is encouraged. To register, go to www.homefields.org/ open-farm-2025.

Events to honor legacy of Appenzellers

To honor the legacy of Henry and Ella Dodge Appenzeller, First United Methodist Church (UMC), 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster, will host a weekend of music, lectures, and reflection on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. This year marks the 140th anniversary of the Appenzellers’ arrival in Korea, a pivotal moment in the history of Protestant Christianity in the region. The weekend’s activities will celebrate the historical ties between Lancaster and Korea, highlighting the enduring connection between the two communities through the universal language of music and shared faith.

Henry Appenzeller, a native of Souderton, was a member and assistant pastor at First UMC before being commissioned as a missionary to Korea in 1884. He and his wife, Ella, arrived in Korea on Easter Sunday in 1885. Henry played a foundational role in introducing Protestant Christianity to Korea, establishing a Methodist church in Seoul; founding Paichai Hakdang, now Pai Chai University; and contributing to the translation of the New Testament to Korean. His efforts fostered education and cultural exchange between Korea and the U.S.

The celebratory weekend will begin with lunch on April 26 at 12:15 p.m., followed by a lecture - “What’s So Special About Appenzeller?” - presented by Kale Yu, professor of religion and philosophy at High Point University, N.C.
On April 27 at 8:15 and 10:45 a.m., a choir and full orchestra will present the cantata “All Is Yours” by composer James Ra, who composed the piece to honor the Appenzellers and other missionaries to Korea. At 9:30 a.m., Yu will present a second lecture, “Women’s Advantage: Methodist Women Missionaries and Korean Bible Women.”
Those unable to attend on April 27 are invited to an open rehearsal of “All Is Yours” on April 26 at 10 a.m.
Parking is available in a lot behind the church. Nursery and child care are provided at all Sunday services. For more details, visit www.engagegodfirst.org/ events/appenzeller-weekend or call 717-394-7231.
