IMPACT! Missions Celebrates 10 Years Of Ministry By Dayna M. Reidenouer

“It has been 10 years of God’s love, mercy, and grace. I’m thankful God has kept things busy and hopping,” commented Matt Beakes, founder and executive director of IMPACT! Missions (IM). “I can’t believe all that has been accomplished in the last 10 years.” From its beginnings in early 2010, the goal of IM has been to make homes warm, safe, and dry. The organization initially served residents of Penn Manor, Solanco, and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts, but it has since expanded to serve all of Lancaster County. More than 450 families have been served by IM, and 142 families have been able to give back without prompting. “We work with the extreme poor, who usually make $15,000 a year or

less,” Beakes explained at a 10th anniversary celebration dinner in Lampeter on Feb. 22. “When they have support, they can grow and take risks.” To illustrate his point, Beakes asked attendees to raise their hands if they could think of five resources or people they could call if their vehicles broke down on the side of the road. Most of the people IM serves do not have even one person, he said. “We’re building friendships, a network (of support), to help them rise above where they never thought they’d be,” Beakes said. IM started out as a way for church groups to save on the costs of weeklong mission trips by offering a local work camp. Over the decade, it has morphed into much more. Beakes related that IM has overseen the project management on the renovation of 30 houses, most of which had been

An American Sign Language interpreter will be on hand for the stories throughout the day. Also appearing will be Catcher, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s mascot, and various teams from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS). The Bookmobile from the Library System of Lancaster County will be at the museum so that Lancaster County residents age 5 and over may sign up for a library card. Reading on the Rails activities are included in the regular museum admission. Visit www.rrmuseum pa.org or call 717-687-8628.

LCWC Will Host 47th Annual Woodcarving Festival When Mike Dieter set out to obtain a set of decoys for waterfowl hunting in 1980, he did not realize that it would introduce him to an entirely different hobby. At the time, finances were limited, and Dieter was supporting a growing family. Rather than purchase decoys, he decided to make his own. Galen Shelly, Dieter’s friend and Lancaster County WoodCarvers (LCWC) member, invited him to attend club meetings, and Dieter was bitten by the carving bug. In the following decades, Dieter learned to carve from patterns and then advanced to making his own designs. He discovered an affinity for traditional knife-carving, rather than using power tools, and he has even used a pocketknife once owned by his father. Dieter also employs a traditional painting method and has mastered the skill of creating realistic feathers and other See Woodcarving Festival pg 4
