Ameliorating Hunger At Home And Abroad
Members of the public are invited to join Dorothy and her friends as they venture off to see the wizard in LampeterStrasburg (L-S) High School’s production of “The Wizard of Oz” at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, March 5 and 6, and at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 7. The musical will be presented in the high school’s Performing Arts Center (PAC), 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. About 107 students are part of the cast, said director Kevin Ditzler. That figure includes 22 third- and fourthgrade students from Hans Herr Elementary School, who are portraying Munchkins and poppies. “They’ve been wonderful to work with,” Ditzler said of the youngest cast members. “They’re hardworking, and they’re sponges: They take in a lot of knowledge. “It is amazing to know that our community is taking little steps to make big, positive, life-saving changes in children’s lives all around the world,” said Lora Mangus Wenger, chair of the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event at Willow Street Mennonite Church (WSMC), 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street. WSMC has hosted six MobilePack events, with the efforts resulting in See MobilePack Event pg 2

be on stage.” Students in the lead roles are ecstatic about appearing in the musical as well, and since it is based on the movie from 1939, several generations of family members are also thrilled. “My dad loves this show,” said Joey Long, who plays the Cowardly Lion. “Even if you haven’t seen the movie, it’s music that you know. You’ve grown up singing it. It’s like a jingle,” suggested William Bray, who portrays the Scarecrow. “Everyone knows (the song) ‘We’re Off to See the Wizard,’” Joey added. Because the film has been around for so long, Ditzler has had to adopt a balanced perspective as director. “We’re doing our best to embrace the nostalgia inherent in the show, but we’re allowing the students to find their own versions of each of these characters,” he said.
