Carving Out Time For The Holidays By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The plaintive strains of “Silent Night” played on a harmonica filled the air as members of the Manheim Township Woodcarvers Association (MTWA) and the Lancaster County WoodCarvers (LCWC) placed ornaments on a small artificial evergreen tree on Dec. 4. Each of the more than 170 ornaments had been painstakingly carved and decorated by members of the two groups. “Some of them are so beautifully ornate. The facility has 24 beds, where seriously ill individuals’ pain and symptoms are managed during generally short-term stays before returning home. During December, HCC chaplains and social workers invite clients’ family members to choose ornaments from the tree as holiday keepsakes. “People are here, but the holidays are still happening around them,” Musser said. “This creates a sweet moment for them to get through this holiday season.” “(The ornaments are) a tangible expression of care that can be carried on by families,” chaplain Kevin Frain remarked. “The memories associated See Woodcarving Groups pg 4
