Author’s Sixth Book Teaches About Friendship

Kim Meredith never planned to write one book, let alone six.

The Hempfield Township resident discovered that once she finds inspiration, she is compelled to get busy.

Meredith’s latest work, “The Lady and the Mouse,” was published in August. It can be purchased by going to www.kimkluxenmeredith .com. The book is also available in four states - Pennsylvania; New Jersey; Delaware; and Florida, where it is for sale at Books and Books, Judy Blume’s bookstore in Key West. Meredith met the famed children’s author a few years ago.

Locally, “The Lady and the Mouse” can be bought at Aaron’s Books, 35 E. Main St., Lititz; Bookshelf Shenanigans 2 N. Market St,, Elizabethtown; and Bound Books, 21 S Beaver St,, York.

“I have a lot of grandparents that buy it so that they can have it in their collection to read

Lancaster County has a rich horological history (and for the layperson, that means “having to do with measuring time”). Now that history will be celebrated during the inaugural Lancaster Watch Weekend, happening from Friday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Sept. 28.

“For most of the 20th century, Lancaster, Pa., was one of the most important watchmaking cities in the world,” said Amanda Okum, events coordinator for the National Watch & Clock Museum in Columbia, one of the organizers of the event. “In Lancaster, home of the Hamilton Watch Co., precision, innovation and mass production came together to create some of the finest mechanical timepieces ever made. Today, the world-renowned watchmakers and collectors in the county have created an exciting new hub of the wristwatch world.” Lancaster Watch Weekend is open to everyone, though museum entry fees apply and some of the events require a reservation. Hosted by the National Watch & Clock Museum, Hamilton Watch Boutique, RGM Watch Co. and Brent Miller Jewelers, the three-day program will feature exhibits; horological experiences; guided tours; and presentations that celebrate the past, present and future of watchmaking.

Events will take place at the National Watch & Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia; the Hamilton Watch Boutique in the historic Bowman building at 149 N. Duke St. in Lancaster; Brent Miller Jewelers

to grandchildren when they come and visit,” said Meredith.

“The Lady and the Mouse” is the fourth collaboration between Meredith and illustrator and artist Lisa Madenspacher, who lives in Columbia. It is a 20-page hardbound book with Madenspacher’s watercolor illustrations.

in 2018, and each shell gave me an inspirational message.”

“This book is completely different because it’s written in rhyming prose,” said Meredith, who is a retired Spanish teacher. “I’ve never done that before, and I wanted to do something different. The inspiration was a gentleman who is a friend of mine had an English cottage picture, and I looked at it, and I thought, ‘Well, that would make a good story.’ The springboard for my idea of this friendship. It’s about an unlikely friendship between an older woman and a mouse who comes to visit, and he helps her to take care of her house. She has this beautiful cottage, but it’s too large. He comes, and they become fast friends as they spend the day cleaning and taking care of the house. It just shows that this unlikely friendship can come through working together.”

Meredith and Madens -

“I have four grandchildren, and my youngest grandson used to like to have me tell him mouth stories, stories I would make up,” said Meredith. “I would read ‘The Berenstain Bears.’ He goes, ‘No, Mimi, tell me a mouth story.’ I realized, I can make up stories. I’m not a trained English teacher. I don’t a background of literature. It’s just something that I enjoy. So, the story started coming, so that was the first one, and that was the second one, then that was the third one because my granddaughter said, ‘Well, you have stories about Henri; what about his sister, Heidi? Girls can do as much as boys.’”

Meredith, a native of upstate New York who moved to this area in 1977, wrote her first book, “Listen for the Whispers,” after tragic circumstances. “I was widowed at age 40,” she said. “I had I kept a journal, and that turned into a book, an inspirational book that I used to speak quite a bit around the country at grief groups and support groups. So that was my first one.”

Her second tome was “Ocean Whispers.” “I love the beach so much,” she said.

“I picked up 42 seashells one summer on the beach

Meredith is grateful to the people who have helped her along the way. “I have a very good network support system that has evolved over the books,” she said. “I feel very fortunate. It’s a well-oiled machine, and Lisa has become a wonderful friend of mine. She’s an extremely talented artist. Those are original watercolors, and they are works of art.”

Yurchak Printing in Landisville has printed Meredith’s last five books. “I’m really happy because they have a very high-quality product that when I bring these books around to vendors, they see the quality of them, they almost sell themselves,” said Meredith. “They have been marvelous, really supportive.”

Meredith stated that she will continue to write blogs on her website while waiting to see if she is moved to pen another book.

“I never know what’s going to come in my head, and I don’t like to force it,” she said. “This one (‘The Lady and the Mouse’), I didn’t see coming. I never know, so I’m kind of right by the seat of your pants type of writer. I wait till something hits me and inspires me, and then I act upon it, but I don’t have a set formula or a plan out there.”

The congregation at St. James Lutheran Church might be small, but that doesn’t stop them from making a big impact on the community. They routinely support organizations and groups in the area, and they hold events that are open to the public. They will host a Gospel Sing on Sunday, Oct. 5, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the church, 655 S. 10th St., Columbia.

The event will spotlight Ben Ninmann on piano. Originally from Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Ninmann has also lived in North Carolina, Long Island and Michigan before making Lancaster his home nearly 40 years ago. He has spent the past decade playing at St. James

Lutheran Church. Beyond that, he performs with The Maxwell Project and 3 Hour Tour and also serves as the resident pianist at the Greenfield Restaurant.

Leo Barninger will serve as master of ceremonies, and Jetty Gerfin will lead the songs. Ninmann will be featured in three solo songs at the Gospel Sing.

“This is our second year of doing the Gospel Sing,” said Darlene Brown, a member of the church’s outreach committee. “There was such a great turnout last year, we decided to do it again. All are welcome!”

The Gospel Sing is one way the church works to connect with the greater community. What happens in Columbia and the surrounding area is just as important to the church members as what goes on inside the sanctuary, Brown noted.

“Our attending congregation is small, but we are strong in doing and providing for our community,” she shared. The church has supported the Columbia Food Bank, held a sock drive for people experiencing homelessness and assembled personal care kits for Lutheran World Relief, among other efforts.

The church members also work with other groups to obtain financial support for their outreach efforts, Brown remarked.

“We would like to thank Thrivent financial for an Action Team Grant for this event,” she said of the Gospel Sing.

St. James Lutheran Church has a long history in Columbia. It was founded in the east end of Columbia through the efforts of St. John’s Church and its pastor, A.M. Mehrkam. The church held a Christmas program in December of 1902, and, after a canvas of the area to determine the needs of people right in the neighborhood, a service of worship was held at the Susquehanna Fire Company House on Jan. 4, 1903. A group of pastors, including Pastor Mehrkam and Lancaster Conference president Dr. J.W. Hassler, addressed the 48 people present for the service. By 1906, the church had grown to the point that a more suitable worship space was needed, and the lot at 10th and Manor streets was purchased for $1,200. Soon a chapel was erected at a cost of $1,800, and it was filled to capacity for the consecration on Nov. 17, 1907.

Brown anticipates that the Gospel Sing will be an opportunity for everyone to experience some old-fashioned entertainment.

“Please join us for an uplifting afternoon of singing or just listening to some southern gospel songs,” she said. Light refreshments will be served following the Gospel Sing. A freewill offering will be received to benefit the Columbia Food Bank. For more information on the church, search for “Saint James Lutheran Church” on Facebook.

Exhibit To Open at Mulberry Art Studios

Viewpoints in Tandem, featuring the work of Jen van der Meij and her 12-yearold daughter Violet van der Meij will open with a First Friday Reception on Oct. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mulberry Art Studios, located in historic downtown Lancaster at 19-21 N. Mulberry St.

Jen is a Lancaster-based fine artist with a degree in visual communication and graphic design. For this exhibition, she worked primarily in acrylic and oil.

Beyond painting, Jen is a creative director in the advertising industry, a photographer and a published children’s book illustrator.

Guided by the belief that art should be accessible to everyone, she creates works in a variety of sizes and mediums and offers prints to ensure her art reaches a wider audience.

Violet brings a fresh point of view to the world of art. From her earliest days of scribbling with crayons to building with

Legos as a toddler, Violet has always been drawn to creating. Today, her creativity spans painting, drawing, pottery and even nail art.

This exhibition marks Violet’s first formal art show, a milestone on a path she hopes will lead to a lifelong career in the arts, including owning her own studio one day.

Viewpoints in Tandem will be on exhibit at Mulberry throughout October, and those wishing to view it after the opening can contact Stephanie .MulberryArt@gmail.com to set up a time to stop in.

Watches from pg 1

at 1600 Manheim Pike in Lancaster; RGM Watch Co., 801 W. Main St., Mount Joy; and Clock Towers Condominiums, 917 Columbia Ave., Lancaster.

National organizations RedBar Group and the Horological Society of New York will also participate in the event, bringing their communities of collectors and watch lovers into the mix.

“The event’s sponsors have passionate clients and members from across the country, so guests from near and far are expected,” Okum shared. “The event is the result of a collaboration of collector groups, watchmakers and retailers who want to highlight Lancaster’s historic role and growing relevance today in the watchmaking world.”

Highlights of the weekend will include a talk by Roland Murphy, founder of RGM Watch Co., who will share details about watches seen in movies through the perspective of his own career, Okum said. Murphy will focus on watches seen in “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “The Muse,” “Dead Poets Society” and others. Rory McEvoy, executive director of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC), will lead a behind-the-scenes event at the National Watch & Clock Museum to examine some rarely seen artifacts from Lancaster’s watchmaking history. At Clock Towers Condominiums, visitors can enjoy a tour of the old Hamilton Watch Company factory.

“This is more than just a watch event,” Murphy remarked. “It’s a celebration of craftsmanship, community and the remarkable horological legacy that lives on in Lancaster County.”

The National Watch & Clock Museum is run by the NAWCC, a nonprofit member organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the art and science of timekeeping. Recently updated and expanded displays include the Hamilton and Bulova exhibits, the history of wristwatches exhibit and the Public Time gallery.

“The National Watch & Clock Museum has the largest collection of watches and clocks in North America, with examples from across the globe and throughout the centuries,” Okum commented. “From weird and wonderful to complex and beautiful, these objects tell the fascinating story of the history, science and art of timekeeping.”

She encourages anyone with an interest in watches, clocks or history to check out activities during the weekend.

“Attendees can expect a unique, insider look at the wristwatch industry’s history and future, provided by those on the front lines of making, collecting and preserving watches,” she said. “This is the kind of event you’d expect in Philadelphia or New York, but we’re lucky to enjoy it here at home!”

A full schedule for Lancaster Watch Weekend is available at www.lancaster watchweekend.com.

McNees Opens LEAP Program

McNees Wallace & Nurick announced on Sept. 11 that it has opened the 2026 application cycle for its newly expanded Legal Equity Advancement Program (LEAP), which provides participating businesses with access to legal services and business development opportunities.

McNees is accepting applications for LEAP through Tuesday, Sept. 30.

The program supports underrepresented businesses from economically disadvantaged communities and backgrounds in areas of Pennsylvania and Maryland that McNees regularly serves.

Interested businesses are asked to submit their information through the LEAP portal at www .mcneesleap.com. Qualified applicants will then be invited to submit detailed applications.

LEAP was launched in 2020 to support underrepresented businesses in the communities

served by McNees. The program has continued to evolve and expand, helping a total of 34 small, underrepresented businesses since its inception.

McNees is expanding LEAP in 2026 with a goal of helping even more businesses from a wider range of economically disadvantaged communities and backgrounds.

LEAP awardees receive access to McNees’ core legal services, including business formation and corporate governance, labor and employment law compliance, real estate and contract negotiations, intellectual property protection and guidance on Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification. Awardees also gain access to educational workshops, business development seminars and valuable networking opportunities with industry professionals and McNees attorneys.

Kisses for EB

ride motorcycles,” Dana said. “We thought it would be fun to put together a motorcycle ride.”

People can preregister by going to www.kissesforeb .com or visiting the Facebook page Kisses for EB. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 8 a.m.

The ride will begin at 9:45 a.m. and wind through southern Lancaster County and go through two covered bridges. The lone stop will take place at the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge where participants will pose for a group photo and have the opportunity to take photos with Kiba.

The event will be held rain or shine. If there is severe weather, the food will be provided and the motorcycle trivia contest will still occur, and the ride will be rescheduled.

The menu will consist of barbecue chicken, pulled pork, baked potatoes, baked beans, cole slaw, and drinks. Anyone who does not wish to ride can still participate in the trivia contest and enjoy the meal and should arrive at the Refton fire hall at 12:30 p.m.

EB is a rare and painful skin condition that causes fragile skin to blister and tear from minor friction or trauma. Dana said six kids in the county have been diagnosed with EB.

Conestoga Elementary School, loves the ocean, camping, driving a fourwheeler, and riding on his brother Caleb’s motorcycle. “Kiba is far exceeding our expectations,” said Ashley. “They told us, don’t expect him to live more than a year. Every day is like a blessing because he is still here with us. He has like improved a lot since he was little. He does have his setbacks like everybody has their own setbacks. But he just, he pushes on, and he even gives people adults courage, so he’s a trooper, for sure.”

Ashley is proud of her mother’s efforts. “It means a lot to me because (Dana) was able to bring a community of people together to raise awareness for something,” she said. “For your mom be able to put together a foundation and to put together something that will help other families is just mind blowing. It’s amazing.”

AAN

“EB is a genetic mutation that affects the mucous membrane, your whole body. Your skin is your largest organ, so basically any type of friction causes the skin to (come) off,” said Kiba’s mother, Ashley. “It affects everything in your body down to your liver, your kidneys, your heart.”

Kiba, a fifth-grader at

Dana stated that it takes a team to make the event happen. “We want to raise awareness (of EB), and then we want to bring assistance,” Dana said. “We have a couple that has been with us on all but two rides, and they’re the first ones to sign up as soon as we post it, and they’re great. We have another couple from Chester County that comes up, and she’ll help donate baskets and different things. It takes a small community to put this together, so you have people doing flyers, you have people getting donations, then my husband is the leader of the pack on the ride. It takes more than one hand to put this whole thing together.”

Church To Hold Polka Mass

Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2 W. Strawberry St., Lancaster, will hold its annual Polka Mass on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 9 a.m. in the church sanctuary. The church honors its anniversary yearly with a Polka Mass led by the Rev. Glenn Beard.

The church is located at the corner of Manor and West Strawberry streets in Lancaster, with parking available in the lot behind the church on Lafayette Street.

The Polka Mass combines the Lutheran liturgical worship service in a respectful way with popular waltz and polka tunes. Everyone is invited to share in the service of worship and praise, which will be followed by a fellowship time in the adjacent church parlor.
