Alex, who owns and operates Baking for Better, sells tasty treats to raise money for charity. Since starting in 2020, her registered 501(c)(3) organization has generated a staggering amount for various charities. “It’s pretty exciting knowing that this little thing I started that wouldn’t go anywhere has now raised over $25,000,” said Alex, who graduated

for Helping Others

from Hempfield High School on June 3. “I am so glad to be able to help that many people.”

With the assistance of family, friends, and members of the community, Alex makes and sells her products at local events. Parent volunteers helped Alex prepare for her most recent event, the Landisville Elementary Fun Fest on May 16.

pastor Steve Fritz calls it “a joyful noise.”

He is referring to the Waystock Community Music & Family Fun Fest, an annual event whose 13th edition will be held Saturday, June 14, from noon to 4:30 p.m. on the grounds of Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville.

The Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (LCHRA) is requesting the public’s assistance to help the organization best serve people experiencing housing insecurity.

As the lead agency of the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition (LCHC), the LCHRA held a virtual meeting with stakeholders on May 21 to kick off the public participation portion of a county-wide initiative, the Lancaster County Housing

and Homelessness Strategic Plan.

Lancaster County residents can play their part by completing a survey. “We want to get new data about best practices around homeless response and affordable housing and figure out what the needs are,” said Jocelynn Naples, director of communications, development, and special projects for the LCHRA. “We want broad participation across municipalities, across business sectors. Our ideal would be for all county residents to fill the

SUMMER FOOD SeRVICE

Waystock is free. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. If it rains, the event will be held inside the church. For more information about Wayside Presbyterian Church and Waystock, go to https://waysidepc.org.

Monetary contributions and nonperishable canned goods will be accepted and donated to the Hempfield Area Food Pantry, which is at Zion Lutheran Church. Fritz said Wayside members regularly volunteer at the food pantry. “We identified them as our mission, so it’s neighbors helping neighbors,” said Fritz.

Anyone who brings five or more canned goods will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gas card.

Four local bands will perform on the main stage. Basic Connection will start at noon, followed by Rural City Revival at approximately 1:05 p.m., Blue Sky Falls at 2:10 p.m., and Grace Notes at 3:15 p.m.

Grace Notes, Wayside’s praise band, typically plays at the church’s second (contemporary) service on Sundays.

“Grace Notes is a great group of musicians that I am blessed and honored to

perform with,” said Pat Karkotsky, the band’s drummer. Grace Notes is planning to play a wide variety of tunes in its set. “We’ll be doing stuff from Journey’s ‘Separate Ways’ to praise music like ‘I Thank God,’” Karkotsky said. “We play a little bit of secular music, a little bit of Christian music, a little country music, some Eagles. We try to play a variety which showcases what the band can do, and it’s not just in one category.”

Grace Notes vocalist Michael McDonald is Waystock’s music coordinator.

“(Waystock) is centered around a Christian faith, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be Christian music,” said McDonald, who has performed with Christopher Cross and Christine McVie.

“There will be family-friendly music for people of all ages.”

Fritz said, “Our passion is taking the music outside the walls. It’s great inside, but it’s the band that travels more than a Bible study. That group carries the Wayside name wherever it goes. … Music has a way of touching the soul. Literally reverberating within our bodies and minds and our hearts to wake us up to spiritual realities.”

The pastor noted that

A band plays during last year’s Waystock.

music can be beneficial to those who are struggling.

“Music has a way of stirring people quite physiologically to be open to hearing the good news of the Gospel. A song may work for somebody where a sermon may not. The music is a platform for preaching the Good News to the public. It really is a stimulating way of spiritual ministry, and you’ll hear it if you live around here.”

Other bands will perform “unplugged” in the gazebo between the acts on the main stage.

A silent auction will be held featuring collectibles and entertainment and retail gift cards.

There will also be a “Kidz Block Party,” including an inflatable obstacle course; snow cones; popcorn; Wawa’s soft pretzels; Hershey’s ice cream; and a visit from Cylo, the Lancaster Stormers’ mascot.

Fritz said the church is grateful for its sponsors, including Frank Richards and Richards Energy Group, Scott and Linda Keller of Susquehanna Micro Inc., The Wawa Foundation, McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC, and High Transit LLC.

“It will truly be a block party feel with good, wholesome, upbeat music,” Fritz said. “There will be a Christian message.”

“One of our missions is to be a beacon of connection with our neighbors,” Fritz said. It’s all part of Wayside’s five-year development plan called What’s Next. “We want to be more invitational to our neighbors,” said the pastor. Waystock, a combination of Wayside and Woodstock, is the brainchild of Grace Notes bass player Chris Rowles, Fritz said. The inaugural event took place on the church’s front lawn. “The first one was a trial balloon,” said Fritz. “It was well-received, and Waystock has grown very big.” Fritz added, “It’s fun. It’s energizing. It’s good also for the congregation to put their faith into action. It’s not just giving something away; it’s providing an opportunity for us to get involved.”

Church Plans First Friday Events

First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will present a concert, “Organic Reflections: Sounds of Summer,” at 8 p.m. on First Friday, June 6. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

The 30-minute program will be presented by organist Larry Hershey and will include “Wedding Processional (Te Deum)” by Marc Antoine Charpentier, “Fountain Reverie” by Percy Fletcher, and “Fanfare in D” by Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens. Hershey will be joined by pianist Debbie Botham for a piano and organ rendition of the complete suite of “Royal Fireworks Music” by George Frideric Handel. Admission is free.

For more information, call the church office at 717-397-5149.

The church will also host Art in the Garden in its courtyard from 4 to 8 p.m. on June 6. At the free plein air event, the public is invited to stroll through the gardens and watch local artists at work or shop for works of art.

Visitors should enter the courtyard from Orange Street to the left of the church or from Christian Street to the rear of the church.

Local artists are invited to join by contacting Theresa Rettig at 717-682-2240. Artists should bring their paints, brushes, easels, table, or pottery equipment and work on a piece or display work for sale.

Baking for Better

She finds the recipes online and adds a personal touch, usually involving the addition of pretzels or M&M’s. A smart cookie, Alex focuses on making the treats she knows will sell the best: whoopie pies, brownies, Rice Krispie treats, and cookies. Depending on the location, she might also bake cakes or blondies. The Rice Krispie treats are Alex’s favorite to make. “My favorite thing to eat, too,” she said with a laugh.

Every penny of the proceeds goes to charities

such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Rise to Win, “a national nonprofit that educates and empowers the sports community to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice and improve race relations,” according to the group’s website.

Alex developed her love of baking while helping her mom, Stacey, make birthday cakes for family members. Her desire to help others intensified when she read a book in school called “Free Lunch.” “It made me think about all the kids that don’t have the resources or financial help to be able to bring a packed lunch to school every day,” she said.

Alex contacted the Hempfield Area Food Pantry, and she offered to donate baked goods. After being told that the food pantry was only able to accept prepackaged items, Alex came up with the idea to sell the culinary confections and donate the money directly to the pantry.

Other organizations to benefit from Baking for Better include Homes for Veterans and the Power Packs Project, a nonprofit that provides students in Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties with food for weekends.

While playing tennis and softball at Hempfield, as well as being a member of the Student Council and

National Honor Society, Alex still found the time to make Baking for Better rise. “Baking is one of my favorite things to do,” she said.

In the fall, she will attend Wake Forest University. Alex will major in political science on a pre-law track with a plan to become a lawyer like her parents, Bill and Stacey.

Alex hopes to form a baking club in college to continue her good works, while her siblings - brother Hutch, who will be a sophomore at Hempfield, and sister Camryn, who will enter eighth grade - take over Baking for Better.

Anyone wishing to make a donation or suggest a charity to benefit from a

future bake sale can visit the website.

The organizations that benefit from Baking for Batter often send Alex a letter or email to thank her for the contribution. GiGi’s Playhouse, a group that increases positive awareness of Down syndrome, mailed a handwritten card signed by people the group has helped. “It was really sweet,” Alex said. Her recipe for success is not a secret. “I’ve been very fortunate in my life, and I’ve seen people who have not been as fortunate,” Alex said. “When I was growing up, my parents made me pay attention to things that I normally wouldn’t have. They pushed me to help those in need.”

LCHRA

survey out. We know that’s not possible, but we’re trying to push it as widely as we can.”

County residents can go to https://lchra.com to complete the survey, which will be available until approximately Thursday, Aug. 21. The questionnaire will also be publicized on the Facebook accounts for the Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority and the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition.

The anonymous survey is composed of 12 questions, including information about the residents’ demographics and household income.

“Our programs are income constrained, so (we need to know if) we are reaching the people that can access our programs and services,” Naples said. “Or do we need to adjust our outreach strategy? We’re really trying to make it representative across not only geography, but socioeconomic distribution as well.”

Naples added, “It will really help us improve how we can reach out and provide services to the people who are in need of assistance and help us do what we’re doing better across the county.”

Justin Eby, who is the executive director of the LCHRA, stated the survey will likely reinforce some of the issues the group believes need to be addressed, in addition to making the LCHRA aware

of other areas the group should be focusing on that are burdens to people’s ability to have a roof over their head.

“The county is different as far as housing issues (are concerned),” said Eby. “We want to make sure that we can capture information on people’s struggles, (such as) how to connect with services and the lack of a certain housing types. It will help inform us so we can have actual objectives and outcomes. We don’t want to have a plan where we can’t reach those goals.”

Eby said the LCHC has been around for nearly two decades and moved to the LCHRA’s Penn Square headquarters in 2021. The team works to help spearhead planning, funding, coordinating, and reporting on services to address homelessness.

The coalition is composed of more than 50 organizations in various forms, including housing programs, street outreach, and shelter provision.

The LCHRA asks that people who need assistance dial the United Way’s 211 number or go to https:// pa211east.org to find a service provider and be directed to resources based on location.

The LCHRA oversees housing choice voucher programs for county residents outside of Lancaster city, including a federal rental subsidy program.

getting this help from the program, which includes assistance for youths and veterans.

Eby explained that vouchers are a rental assistance program. “We make sure someone is not paying more than 30 or 40% of their income on rent and utilities,” he said. “We also cover the gap in rent for an individual if he or she is on a fixed income.” The vouchers ensure landlords are getting paid, and units are inspected to ensure safety issues are addressed.

LCHRA is working through a waiting list and is currently not accepting applications. Eby estimated that the group will be able to resume taking applications in 18 to 24 months.

LCHRA operates a home repair program through the Department of Housing and Human Development. The program is for income-qualified homeowners who need to make safety and security repairs to their residences, and it provides up to $25,000 to pay for work, including new

Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (LCHRA) executive director Justin Eby

roofs, electrical upgrades, and fixes for water and sewer issues.

For more information about the home repair program, email Rebeca Santos at rsantos@lchra.com.
