St. Paul’s UMC To Celebrate 175th Anniversary By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“Methodists love to sing,” commented Elaine Savukas, historian and longtime member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 100 W. Main St., Mountville, explaining why the kickoff of the celebration of the congregation’s 175th anniversary will include lots of congregational singing. “Our church has evolved from three separate denominations - United Brethren in Christ, Evangelical United Brethren, and Methodist - and the hymns that we will be singing that day represent all three,” said St. Paul’s music coordinator Betty Simora. The kickoff to a yearlong celebration of the anniversary will be a worship service on Sunday, May 19, at 10 a.m. An instrumental ensemble will perform a prelude beginning at 9:45 a.m. Throughout the service, the chancel
choir will sing an anthem; the chime choir will play a medley of songs honoring the congregation’s German heritage, as early services were conducted in both English and German; and the congregation will sing several hymns dated from 1846 to 1913. “These are hymns our congregation loves,” Simora said, listing “Church in the Wildwood,” “The Church’s One Foundation,” and “Fairest Lord Jesus” as those slated to be sung. The service will also include remarks by four pastors who previously served at St. Paul’s. The Rev. John Lynch, the Rev. Art Rettew, the Rev. Ted Mefford, and the Rev. Janet Steger will reflect on their times with the congregation. District superintendent Bumkoo Chung will offer a blessing, and the current pastor, the Rev. James Cavallero, will preside. Nursery care will be available during the service. See St. Paul’s UMC pg 10
