Hempfield

Hempfield High School puts on dodgeball tournament

Nearly 100 Hempfield High School students jumped at the chance to have spherical objects hurled at them at speeds more than 50 miles per hour.

It was all part of the school’s annual Dodgeball Classic, which was put on by teacher Andy Wise’s marketing class and the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club.

The event, held in Hempfield’s older gym Feb. 27, featured 16 teams, each comprising six players.

Logan Pennell, a member of the FBLA, could not play because he injured his shoulder playing lacrosse, but he still worked the event as a photographer. “We put out announcements throughout the school,” said Logan. “The teams are made by the students.”

Student Elli Yaeger participated in the dodgeball event for the first time. “I think it’s a great way to build school spirit,” Elli said. “I’m part of the business club, the FBLA, and it’s our job to fundraise and advertise this.”

Elli played on a team alongside fellow FBLA member Nora Small, and Small recruited lacrosse teammates Aubrey Whaley, Kacey Klinger, Sam Earheart, and Haley Knouse.

Student Junior Abiola did not have a team moments before the competition was set to start. He was prepared to play as a one-man team but fortunately bumped into a friend who needed another player to fill his team.

“It’s just fun,” Junior said. “It’s fun to get together and have a

team and throw balls at each other.”

The team consisting of Nathan Louie, Mason Koehler, Cole Ferchalk, Grant Slutter, Marcel Boyreau, and Ethan Ashba won the championship, and the prizes included six Army gym bags with Army swag, six entrees from Texas Roadhouse, Lancaster Stormers tickets, and gift cards from Café East, Friendly’s, and Sharp Shopper.

Wise said, “The champions will live on throughout history by having their picture taken with the Hempfield Black Knights FBLA Dodgeball Classic Championship school trophy.”

The team consisting of Bennett Allgyer, Nick Schoelkoph, AJ Georgelis, Justin Ly, Luke Over, and Isaac Kelchner placed second.

Hempfield High principal Bill Brossman even joined in on the fun, competing in his work attire when a teacher team was shorthanded. “Sometimes as a leader you have to jump in when needed,” Brossman said. “It’s a great event. I love that it’s a student-led event. It really fits into our vision for Hempfield High School. It’s exciting to be a part of something that reaffirms the culture we have here.”

Brossman added, “It’s an

Fashion trends are always changing, but helping people never goes out of style for the Pilot Club of Lancaster.

The Pilot Club will hold its annual Derby Day Fashion Show & Luncheon on Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Palm Court at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster.

Mainstream Boutique will bring the latest fashions, which will be worn by volunteer models. The luncheon will include soup and salad, bread and butter, dessert, coffee, and iced tea.

There is a cost to attend. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact the group on Facebook by searching for “Pilot Club of Lancaster.”

Entertainment will be provided by Adriano, a one-man band playing an organ and singing songs performed by

Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and others.

There will be chances to win items and a hat contest for ladies. “Wear your most outlandish Derby hat to win a prize,” Pilot Club president Kelly Osborne said.

All proceeds will benefit the organization’s community service projects, said Osborne. The Pilot Club was chartered

The 29th annual Lancaster -Lebanon IU13 Education Conference will be held Thursday, June 12, at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.

“We want people to be aware of what we offer, but we also want to give them evidence-based practices to use with students,” said Chanda Telleen, who is an associate program director and supervisor of the training and consultation team for the

IU13. “People are coming to our conference as a way to enhance their professional learning. We have presenters from our partner PaTTAN (Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network). We have presenters from institutes of higher education. We have practitioners presenting. We try to expose our audience to the latest evidence-based practices to support our students.”

Registration and a continental breakfast will run from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m., followed by a welcome

opportunity for the FBLA to learn about leadership and marketing and how to organize and publicize an event. It fits in well with our business class, and it’s a cool thing for the kids, too.”

Wise noted that dodgeball is the ideal sport for this event. “The soft dodgeball doesn’t play like a traditional ball, so it levels the playing field,” Wise said. “There’s no true dodgeball league or competitive atmosphere. Everybody loved dodgeball as a kid, and this really brings it to life in a school setting.”

Wise added the Dodgeball Classic is a way for students to apply what they are learning. “It’s a fundraiser for our FBLA club,” he said. “It’s part of an academic class, our marketing class. They plan it top to bottom. They write for sponsorships. They put together brackets. They put together prize packages, hang posters, and create registration packets. It’s nice to give them something hands-on to do instead of just theory.”

Future Business Leaders of America, a business student organization, has multiple divisions,

including high school, middle school, postsecondary, and professional. Hempfield’s club has 30 members and meets on Thursdays.

“We talk about business topics beyond the classroom and participate in different regional-, state-, and national-level events,” Wise said. “We have speakers in quarterly to connect with our students, and we create an atmosphere for our HHS business students to thrive in school and as they move on to additional educational and professional opportunities.”

Bringing “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka” to life

Catch a performance of “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka” by Encore! Home School Productions and be prepared to experience a wide range of emotions, cast members said.

“This is a super funny show, but it’s also very heartfelt, which I think is a little unexpected,” said Brock Sunday, a senior who plays Grandpa Joe in the production. “You might not think of this story as super heartfelt or meaningful, but there are a lot of parts that are emotional.”

“Willy Wonka” will be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

The musical follows Charlie Bucket’s magical journey inside

Learning to embody a geriatric character has been a fun challenge, Brock said of playing Charlie’s grandfather, who joins his grandson on the factory tour.

“I have had so much fun trying to figure out the physicality of this character,” he shared. “He’s old, but he’s got a sense of youth to him. He’s spunky.”

Wilder version. “I’ve also read the book multiple times. It was one of my favorite books as a small child. I’m trying to take things from myself and put them into this character so I’m not copying anyone.”

Playing Wonka has also presented a challenge because the character is complex, he said.

“Wonka is such a diverse character, and he’s doing all sorts of different things at different times,” Ian explained. “He’s sort of putting on a show inside of this show. For the first half of the show, he’s undercover as the Candy Man, catching the audience up on what’s been happening. Then in

the second act, Wonka is fully on stage, and audiences will feel like they’re part of the story just as much as the kids on the tour are.”

Brock, who lives in Annville, noted that audiences will find the show entertaining and interesting, and he added that it’s full of comedy.

“There are so many scenes that are so funny that we as a cast have struggled to get through in rehearsal without laughing,” he said.

The show features well-known songs such as “The Candy Man” and “Pure Imagination,” as well as lesser-known, but equally entertaining numbers, Ian said.

“You should come see ‚ÄòWilly Wonka’ because it’s going to be a good time,” he said. “There’s also a really strong message of making sure that somehow, someway, you get to be doing what you love. Whether it’s your main job or your side job, you should always be chasing those things in your imagination. Chase those things you love, because overall, that’s what’s going to make you happy, and in turn, that’s what’s going to make the rest of the world a better place as well.”

and opening remarks. Participants should bring confirmation of registration. Room assignments and the conference day agenda will be available.

At 8:40 a.m., keynote speaker Nikole Hollins-Sims will deliver her presentation, “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes - Building Belonging From Birth On.”

Hollins-Sims is an internationally recognized speaker, author, and educational consultant specializing in equity and positive behavior interventions. She is the senior consultant for Hollins-Sims Consultation and has held roles such as technical assistance coordinator for the Midwest Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Network and special assistant to the secretary of education at the Pennsylvania Department of Education. A Pennsylvania-certified school psychologist, she has researched family-school partnerships, particularly involving caregivers of children with incarcerated parents. She is the lead author of “Creating Equitable Practices in PBIS.”

There will be sessions for participants to break into smaller groups during the morning and afternoon. Participants should preregister for one morning session (10 a.m. to noon) and one afternoon session (1 to 3 p.m.).

“We do have specific presentations that we think might be interesting to a specific group,” Telleen said. “We have certain sessions that we think might be interesting to nurses or to parents.”

The final activity will run

from 3 to 3:30 p.m., when attendees will be able to complete evaluations and visit sponsors’ tables.

“The conference is open to everyone. From parents to superintendents, we invite you to come,” said Telleen. “We invite teachers, special education teachers, and administrators to come to our conference. We have a wide range of topics.”

Go to www.iu13.org/ event/education-conference to register. Preregistration is required for both morning and afternoon breakout sessions, but not the keynote speech. The registration deadline is Friday, May 23.

“We want people to register early and get the early-bird discount,” said Telleen. “We want to get as many people there as possible, but space is limited to approximately 400 people. We’d like to get our registration in as early as possible.”

Telleen said the IU13 is thankful for support from vendors and business sponsors. The conference will also serve as a recruitment tool. “We are highlighting some students,” Telleen said. “There are some interns who will be at our conference. This is another opportunity for us to attract young people to the field of education and specifically working with students with disabilities.”

She noted the importance of interesting young people in teaching to address teacher shortages.

The IU13 supports students with disabilities from birth to graduation and beyond, Telleen said. “We work with families. We work with our 22 member districts to provide training and technical assistance and special programming for students with disabilities,” she added. There is a wide variety of programs that offer support. “My team offers training and technical assistance,” said Telleen. “We do go out to the various districts, but we also host training or job groups here at Burle (Corporate Park) in our conference center. We also have programs within districts for children with disabilities, supporting students with multiple disabilities or autism.”

in Lancaster in 1947. “We are a nonprofit community service club,” Osborne said. “We’re similar to the Rotary Club or the Lions Club. Our motto is ‘Friendship and Service.’”

The group launched the local Meals on Wheels program in 1967. Meals on Wheels grew to become a separate nonprofit, but the Pilot Club still makes monetary donations, and some members volunteer to deliver meals.

All men and women are welcome to join the Pilot Club. The Lancaster chapter’s membership currently consists of 37 women.

The Pilot Club meets at 5:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at Lancaster Tennis & Yacht Club, 2615 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Guests are welcome to attend to see how the club operates, Osborne said.

The Pilot Club’s signature community service initiative is Project Lifesaver of Lancaster County, a group near and dear to Osborne.

Project Lifesaver is a search-and-rescue program for people who wander away from home due to a cogni-

tive issue such as dementia or autism, Osborne said.

West Hempfield Police Department was the first department to embrace the program when it began in 2012. Since then, Project Lifesaver has added 22 police departments as full or associate members to become a countywide organization that includes Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency (LEMA) and Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Troop J Lancaster.

Osborne, who retired from her job as a state trooper in January of 2023, had never heard of Project Lifesaver until 2019. Her father, Courtney, who had dementia, wandered away from an assisted living facility in Lancaster Township in October of 2019 and was found dead.

Serendipitously, days earlier, a sheriff from New Jersey had called Osborne to notify the PSP a Project Lifesaver client was visiting Lancaster County. When Osborne returned the message, she said she got chills.

“I knew right then and there it was my mission to search for information on

Project Lifesaver and bring it to Troop J Lancaster as a tribute to my dad,” she said. Osborne connected with the Pilot Club in 2019, joined two years later, and is now finishing the first year of a two-year term as the group’s president. She acquired funding and cut through red tape to bring Project Lifesaver to Troop J.

The Pilot Club helps fund the purchase of equipment and training of police officers and handles client enrollment and battery maintenance.

LEMA and police agencies maintain search-and-rescue equipment, keep officers proficient with the training, and do the search-and-rescue missions when needed.

“We count on this money to continue to fund Project Lifesaver of Lancaster County to purchase transmitters and equipment for our police departments,” Osborne said.

Here’s how Project Lifesaver works: Families who have loved ones with a cognitive condition and fear that person could get lost may contact Cathy Cieslinski of the Pilot

Club at 717-572-2682 or go to www.pilotclubof lancaster.org.

The Pilot Club fits clients with a transmitter on either an ankle or a wrist. There is a specific frequency assigned to each transmitter. Should the client go missing, the caregiver is instructed to call 911, and then trained personnel go out with a receiver in search of the missing person. “It’s archaic technology but tried and true,” Osborne said. She added that Project Lifesaver has reduced search-and-rescue time from an average of about nine hours to an average of 30 minutes or less. There is a cost associated with each transmitter and the equipment that goes with it, but the Pilot Club provides scholarship opportunities for those in need so that no one is turned away.
