Rutledge named a state Teacher of the Year semifinalist

Andrea Rutledge is dedicated to giving Hempfield School District pupils the same kind of encouragement and nurturing she received as a student.

That’s a big reason the Landisville Middle School (LMS) ELA (English language arts) interventionist is a PA State Teacher of the Year semifinalist.

“It was an absolute honor and delightful surprise to be nominated by a colleague,” Rutledge said. She submitted a résumé and three letters of recommendation and answered three essay questions as part of the initial process. Rutledge found out in February she had advanced to the next round.

Rutledge will record a lesson that will be reviewed and judged, and she will be interviewed. The state finalists will be announced in May.

Teacher of the Year is a national competition connected locally to the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

As an ELA interventionist, Rutledge provides reading and writing support.

“I think about my own experience (as a student),” she said. “I went from Farmdale (Elementary School) to LMS to HHS (Hempfield High School), and it was such a good ride for me as a student. I’ve walked these same hallways. I’ve sat in these same desks. I’ve had some of these same teachers that my students have. I feel like I truly see them. I hear them. I

value them, and because of that connection, I think they are willing to engage with me more deeply. It’s meaningful for us all.

… This is my school. It’s full circle for me, and I love what I do and that shines through.”

Rutledge believes it’s her responsibility to do for her students what her teachers did for her. “I’ve had such a good experience at Hempfield. I’m just paying it forward now,” she said.

“I had teachers that saw things in

me that I didn’t see at the time. You nurture it, and as confidence builds, it’s realized. I know I’m doing that for students.”

One reason she knows about her impact on students is the number of people who have congratulated her after her achievement was posted on the school district’s Instagram page.

“It’s meant everything to me,” Rutledge said. “Former students have reached out to me. It was so unexpected, but it just affirms

Bookworms in the area can help their local library and find their next good read at the same time.

Friends of Mountville Library, which support the Lancaster Public Library - Mountville Branch, will hold their spring

book sale Friday, March 21, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, March 22, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville, which is across the street from the library.

“We will have a wide variety of books,” said Karen Denlinger, president of the Friends of

Applications

The Hempfield Foundation is accepting scholarship applications from Hempfield High School graduating seniors through Friday, March 28.

Seniors should contact their school counselor for an application, and they may go to www .hempfieldfoundation.org for more information.

Joel Janisewski, Hempfield

scholarship chair, said the scholarships are generally funded by specific members of the community. “Generous donors in our community make these scholarships happen that transform students’ lives,” he said.

Many of the scholarships are for general use. Janisewski said there is a targeted scholarship for students who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and who are pursuing secondary education

Mountville Library. “If you are a knitter or crocheter, we have lots of books about that. (We have) lots of sports books.” There will be many books from 2022 to the present day.

“This is for people who love books,” Denlinger said. “Instead of paying $20 for a book that was published in 2024, they can get that book for $5. A lot of people come for the jigsaw puzzles.” In addition to books and jigsaw puzzles, Denlinger said the sale will feature DVDs, CDs, and some games.

She recalled a time when people traveled from Honey Brook just for the event. “We’re small, but we’re good,” said Denlinger.

after COVID caused the cancellation of two sales. “When people realized they couldn’t use the library, I think it was devastating for some,” said Denlinger, who read books during the library’s story time after retiring from her job as a teacher. “They didn’t realize how important it was. They come to use the computer. Sometimes if they’re alone in their house, they just come here to read and to see other people.”

Although Friends of Mountville Library have been successful in their fundraising efforts, the need is bigger than ever.

We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

Friends of Mountville Library help the branch operate by providing the funds to buy books and facilitate programs, Denlinger said.

“The Friends board is important to the library because we try to formulate ideas of how we can raise money and help the library to function and help them add more programs and materials,” Denlinger said. “(We are) spreading the word of how wonderful the library is.”

The organization actually gained momentum

“Another reason people should support the library and the different things we do is because our funding has been cut,” said Denlinger.

The Friends group is composed solely of its 12-member board and does not have any additional members. “We don’t really have a Friends group, but we have people who make donations,” Denlinger said. “Basically, my feeling is anybody who comes to the library is a friend of the library.”

In addition to semiannual book sales, the organi zation holds several other fundraisers.

Singers invited to participate in event

The annual plant sale will be held Friday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to noon at Mountville Church of the Brethren. In the past, people have dug up perennials to donate and have provided gardening equipment. Businesses also contribute. Anyone interested can place preorders for flowers. The first plant sale 10 years ago generated $600. Last year’s sale raised $5,000.

Boulders Miniature Golf and Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, 312 Primrose Lane, Mountville, will host a

fundraising event Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. A percentage of food sales and mini golf ticket sales will be donated to Friends of Mountville Library.

Beginning Monday, June 2, the Mountville branch will be selling mini golf tickets that can be used anytime during the summer and will receive a portion of the proceeds. 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, will host the St. Peter’s Choir Festival at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, to benefit the Manheim Township Ambulance Association. Community members are invited to join the chorus. Singers will have the opportunity to perform a variety of choral music, sharing the program with professional musicians.

Singers of all ages, from high school through senior adults, are welcome to participate. No auditions or prior knowledge of the music are required, but singers should be able to read music. In addition to the adult chorus, children interested in participating will be able to join the children’s choir for this event.

Culinary creativity meets compassion

“Get ready for a night of sizzling excitement and paw-some fun!” said Tammy L. Jalbert, executive director of Columbia Animal Shelter. “Join us at Chopped for Charity to benefit the Columbia Animal Shelter - where culinary creativity meets compassion!”

The second annual Chopped for Charity will be held on Saturday, March 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Country Barn Farm Market, 211 S. Donerville Road, Lancaster.

Modeled after the Food Network show “Chopped,” the event challenges participants to create a dish using ingredients from a mystery box. Contestants may also use additional items from a shared pantry, but each dish must prominently feature all of the mystery ingredients.

The chefs competing this year are Ethan Greer, Chef M and Javan Small. Greer is a restaurateur native to York County. He founded Taqueria El Camino, a Latin restaurant located in Dover, in 2020. He also operates three locations of Greer’s Burger Garage and is the co-owner of The Franklin Street Social in Red Lion.

Chef M (also known as chef Michelle Andrews) has a passion for global flavors and traditions. She specializes in private dining, customized meal plans and culinary education. After attending culinary school in Colorado, she opened her own business serving York and surrounding communities in 2020.

Small grew up in Maryland and at Misawa Air Force Base in Japan. He has resided in York since 2015 and has worked for more than 20 years in various culinary environments. A graduate of John-

son & Wales University, he trained in Luxembourg and worked at a Michelin Star restaurant. He worked for several food service companies in New England before serving as executive chef at restaurants in Allentown and Easton.

For the past two and a half years, he has worked for York Country Day School. At Chopped for Charity, guests will enjoy a buffet dinner, live entertainment and information about the shelter’s mission and impact. Complimentary soda and water will be provided, with beer and wine available for purchase. The culinary competition portion of the event will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The chefs will have 30 minutes to create a dish, which will be tasted by four judges. Three of the judges will be prominent community members, while the fourth judge position will be auctioned off to an event attendee.

Following the competition, a live auction will be held, featuring experiences such as farm tours and private in-home dinners with local chefs. Additionally, a fund-a-need paddle auction will also take place, spotlighting how donations directly support the shelter’s ongoing efforts. A whiskey pull will also be featured.

Last year’s inaugural Chopped for Charity was very well received, Jalbert shared. “Last year’s event sold out, and we had to move to a larger venue,” she stated.

Proceeds from the event will help fund surgical monitoring medical equipment and care of the animals in the Columbia Animal Shelter, as well as provide funds for the site’s wellness and spay/neuter clinics.

The event is made possible through sponsorships, which are still available, Jalbert said.

“We would like to thank Wegmans Food Markets, Art Printing Company, The Restaurant Store and Kleen-Rite for being sponsors,” she added.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at https://tinyurl.com/3bt jbyc9 and will be available

until Friday, March 28, or until they are sold out. Tickets will not be available at the door.

“Come out and enjoy a fabulous time,” Jalbert said, noting that the event is for adults only. “While the competition heats up, you’ll enjoy delicious food, live entertainment and the chance to support our furry friends in need,” she remarked. “Your ticket doesn’t just get you a seat at the table. It helps provide shelter, care and love for animals waiting for their forever homes.”

what

do every day. You don’t get that a lot in the day-to-day grind of teaching, so those are just treasures when you hear back from students about how it has helped them along the way. You plant these seeds, and they get watered for years, and then you see it grow later and you hear about it. That’s a gift and a blessing.”

Rutledge stated the environment at Landisville and the other Hempfield schools is conducive to fostering students’ growth. “Education is a team sport,” she said. “It takes students and fam -

ilies and colleagues and the community. I have a lot of pride being in this community. That’s why I choose to stay here.”

Rutledge was eager to return home to Hempfield in 2019 after spending the first 11 years of her teaching career in Lampeter-Strasburg as an elementary special education teacher.

“I think that gives me a different perspective with teaching middle-schoolers. They’re just taller than me now,” she joked.

Landisville Middle School principal Eli Cox stated Rutledge is worthy of the acclaim. “Andrea is a team player with a genuine desire to help our students, staff, school, and community,” said Cox. “When you couple that with her problem-solving skills, creativity, and educationally sound mind, it is easy to see why she was nominated and selected as a semifinalist for the Teacher of the Year Award.”

Members of Two Rivers Chamber Music

such as Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, for example.

“We’re really thankful for the support of the community,” said Janisewski. “That makes this happen. It’s a privilege for us to be involved with the Hempfield Foundation, but it’s all because of the people in the community that donate to support the foundation, which directly supports students in the district, and it’s changing students’ lives.”

The organization works year-round to help students and teachers. “The Hempfield Foundation raises funds from the community to support educational enrichment projects led by teachers in the district,” Janisewski said.

Teachers semiannually propose grants that would develop academic programs and projects that directly serve students across the district.

The proposals are reviewed by the foundation’s grants and scholarship committee. Janisewski said businesses, nonprofits, teachers, and district staff members also participate in the process. “We’re thankful for the level of involvement the district has in helping us with our work and helping teachers to know about the grant applications,” said Janisewski.

Grants, which cover all grade levels and buildings, range up to $3,000 apiece and could go higher if multiple schools are collaborating on a project.

“It’s exciting to see new projects teachers are taking on,” said Janisewski. “There are collaborations within grade levels and across grade levels. We’re able to fund things that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.”

In February, the foundation announced 14 full/partial grants totaling more than $26,000. One of the projects funded this school year is “One School, One Book at LPC,” where each Landisville Primary Center (LPC) family will receive a copy of a book to read at home with a reading schedule to follow. At school, special area teachers weave the story into their lesson.

Centerville and Landisville middle schools received a grant for a similar program.

East Petersburg Elementary School teacher Kristine Kachel received a grant for “A Third-Grade Adventure in Writing and Publishing.”

The goal of this project is to inspire and engage thirdgrade students in the creative process of writing and storytelling, culminating in the publishing of a class book.

Farmdale Elementary School music teacher Lisa Sempsey got a grant for “All About That Bass (and Treble),” which funded a contrabass bar set and two glockenspiels. With these added to the instrument inventory, students will explore beat, melodic range, composition, and improvisation through world music in new and exciting ways, the grant summary said.

Hempfield High School teacher Svetlana SagalovFeldman received a grant for “Interpretation Earbuds for Improved Communication and Engagement,” which funded interpreter earbuds for English learners. The interpreter earbuds are designed to improve the educational experience of English learners and their families in the early levels of English language acquisition.

Landisville Intermediate

Center music teacher Jamie Smith got a grant for “Drums for Everyone!” to fund a classroom drumming set. The purpose of this drum set is to expand student access to a culturally rich, competency-based music curriculum that will help them to grow both as musicians and people, according to the grant summary. The drums could also be utilized in school concerts, by students at community events, as staff team building, and in other creative ways.

The Hempfield Foundation was started in 1993 and has contributed more than $1 million to district projects, said Erika Hunter-Hake, the group’s community engagement assistant.

Janisewski said the foundation raises money through two main sources. Local businesses can elect to participate in the educational improvement tax program and make tax-advantaged donations that go directly to the foundation, said Janisewski. Businesses can also partner with the foundation on various levels.

“We are thankful for the business that are invested in our community,” Janisewski said. “We are always looking to add new businesses to our sponsor levels.”

Jazz ensemble to perform at church

Temple Avenue will perform on Sunday, March 23, at 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster.

Temple Avenue is a Lancaster-based jazz ensemble of young professional musicians, most of whom have earned bachelor’s and advanced degrees in jazz. Several of these degrees were received from Temple University, inspiring the group’s name. Temple Avenue’s music includes vocals, bass, saxophone, piano, and drums. In high demand for events through-

out central Pennsylvania, Temple Avenue musicians are known for their unique spin on jazz standards and lesser-known tunes. There is no admission charge; a freewill offering will be received during

intermission to support St. Peter’s Musical Arts Series. For more information about the Musical Arts Series and other ministries of St. Peter’s, visit www .stpeterslutheran.org or call 717-569-9211.

The foundation receives grassroots community contributions throughout the year, and benefits from the annual ExtraGive, which will be held on Friday, Nov. 21.

The biggest fundraiser is the foundation’s annual golf tournament, which will take place Friday, June 6, at Four Seasons Golf Club, Landisville.
