CONSERVATION CONVERSATION

The Lancaster County Bird Club will meet on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. After a short business meeting, Jeffrey Larkin, professor of wildlife ecology and conservation at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, will present a program on “Importance of Landscape-scale Forest Bird Conservation.” Larkin and his students have assisted state and federal agencies and other conservation groups with understanding the ecology and associated management implications for birds and other animals. Open Houses Set For New Memory Support Unit The Harvest House at Homestead Village, 1800 Village Circle, Lancaster, i s s l a t e d fo r a g r a n d o p e n i n g i n m i d - January and will increase the community’s capacity to serve additional residents with cognitive and personal care needs. The CARF-CCAC accredited Life Plan Community - formerly known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community - currently serves approximately 475 residents in 211 cottages and villas, 111 apartments, and a 60-bed skilled nursing center. The new household has been designed specifically to provide secure, high-quality memory support services in a personal care setting. The neighborhood-style home is located on the second floor of the Westvue building above Homestead Village’s existing Gelhard House. It features 13 private studios of varying sizes and designs.

Each room has its own private bathroom with a shower. The central living space features a living room, a sunroom, and a country kitchen dining area. A shared ground-level courtyard and walking path are available for residents who enjoy gardening, outdoor conversations, or group activities. The Harvest House and Gelhard House strive to offer caring and compassionate personal care assistance, as well as special services including planned on- and off-campus activities adapted for memory support residents, a “music and memory” program, pet therapy, oversize studios to accommodate couples, and complimentary transportation to medical appointments within a 5-mile radius of Homestead Village. The board of directors of Homestead Village has announced the opening of Harvest House at Homestead Village, which is designed to provide secure, high-quality memory support services in a personal care setting. Open houses will be held on Jan. 8 and 10.

Tree Recycling Program Available

GBC, Manheim BIC To Host Night To Shine

County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Thursday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a threetree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park.

The Gen. John H. Michaelis Chapter 327 of the Korean War Veterans Association will hold its regular meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Eagle Commons of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The meeting will begin at noon. The speaker will be Larry Alexander, who will share the story of Merlin “Whitey” Groft, who fought in World War II. Membership in KWVA is open to all service members who served in Korea at any time from 1945 to the present or were in uniform serving anywhere from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. will hold a designer bag bingo on Friday, Jan. 25. In the case of snow, the event will take place on Friday, Feb. 1. The event will be held at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. The doors will open at 5 p.m., and games begin at 6 p.m. Prizes will include designer bags and purses as well as giveaway drawing baskets. Food will be served, including walking tacos, hot dogs, and chili. Tickets may be purchased in advance by emailing pm2019postprom@gmail.com. They will also be available at the door for a higher fee. All proceeds will benefit Penn Manor Post Prom 2019, a chaperoned, overnight event held for students after Penn Manor’s prom.
