Students Research Local History Secondary students of Mrs. Eckert at Hershey Christian Academy recently researched local history and learned that Hershey Transit Company trolleys connected the towns of Hummelstown, Hershey, Campbelltown, Palmyra, and Elizabethtown from 1904 to 1946. They also learned that the first president, George Washington, stayed at the Warwick Hotel in Hummelstown. They also learned about a Susquehannock Native American village in the center of town and Hessian soldiers imprisoned in the Swatara Ferry House. Place names have meaning, the students discovered. In the 1750s, Irish immigrant Barnabas Hughes honored his wife by naming Elizabethtown after her. Market and High streets were named by him as well.

Johannes Palm, the founder of Palmyra, was a physician who participated in the Battle of Brandywine when he was 62 years old. In Palm’s lifetime, John Campbell was laying out a town that would bear his name just a few miles away on the “Horse-shoe Pike.” Milton Hershey returned to his birthplace of Derry Church in 1903 to create and develop the town of Hershey. Hershey Christian Academy, which will offer prekindergarten through 10th grade in the 2020-21 school year, encourages students to think independently and purposefully. Teachers mentor with a grace-centered perspective in a safe classroom environment. For more information, readers may visit www.hersheychristianacademy.org or call the school office at 717-312-7595.

Secondary students of Mrs. Eckert (second from left) at Hershey Christian Academy display posters they made after researching local history. Participants included (from far left) Sarah Eckert, Jacob Snyder, Dakota Chestnut, Sara Marshall, Shyanna Hoffer, Lauren Kreiser, Brianna Nelsen, and (not pictured) Lyniah Hoffer.
