The Elizabethtown Area School District will host a rededication ceremony and community open house on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. to celebrate the recently completed renovation and expansion of Bainbridge Elementary School, 416 N. Second St., Bainbridge. School board president Terry Seiders, superintendent of schools Dr. Michele Balliet, and principal Amanda Baxter, along with more than a dozen students and musicians, will take part in the festivities. The public is invited to attend the rededication. Guided tours of the facility will take place immediately following the ceremony as part of the open house. Stevens Hill Community Church of the Brethren, 3131 Turnpike Road, Elizabethtown, will host a Trunk or Treat event on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 3 to 5 p.m. All children are welcome to wear their costumes and collect candy. Hardened Hearts Exhibit Seeks To Start Conversation By Ann Mead Ash
The prints are somewhat reminiscent of those tiny candy hearts with the messages that circulate in early to midFebruary. The photos line the walls of the gallery at the Emerald Center (The E), each bearing its own words, colors, and expressions. The exhibit is called “The Hardened Heart - Breaking the Cycle of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault,” and it will be on display at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, through Saturday, Dec. 15. Exhibit openings will be held Sunday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. A poster hanging near the exhibit asks “Is your heart represented?” and it is natural for viewers to wander along See “The Hardened Heart” pg 17

Northwest EMS Receives CARES Award Northwest EMS recently received the 2018 CARES Award for actively participating in the Pennsylvania Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES). CARES is a national cardiac arrest registry developed to help save lives by providing a tool for communities to measure the effectiveness of their emergency response systems and identify opportunities to improve quality of care. The local EMS service is one of 122 agencies in Pennsylvania to receive the award. Northwest EMS was commended for collecting data in collaboration with and on behalf of basic life support (BLS), first responder, and community partners to measure outcomes, improve the quality of care, and save lives. Data include information about bystander CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) application, telephone CPR, and EMS response times. See Northwest EMS pg 2
Students Selected As National Merit Semifinalists

Elizabethtown Area High School seniors Sean Brown, Alexander Caylor, and Ryan Minnich are among 16,000 semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The designation places Brown, Caylor, and Minnich in the top one percent of all U.S. high school seniors and among the highest scoring entrants in Pennsylvania. Brown is the son of Frank and Caroline Brown of Elizabethtown. Caylor is the son of Douglas and Lisa Caylor of Elizabethtown. Minnich is the son of David Minnich of Lancaster and Sherri Minnich of Elizabethtown. Approximately 1.6 million current seniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT in their junior year, which served as the initial screening of program entrants. On Saturday, Dec. 1, hundreds of Santa Claus doppelgangers will descend on the streets of downtown Manheim once again for the annual Santa Run and Walk 5K. Sponsored by the Manheim Lions Club, the event will feature a mostly flat course that will lead participants along Charlotte Street and through several neighborhoods, past Logan Field, and back to Market Square. Donors may bring items on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Tools, birdfeeders, birdhouses, containers, patio items, wind chimes, and any usable item with a garden connection will be considered.
