The Elizabeth Hughes Society will meet on Monday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Guest speaker Roni Ryan will discuss “Planning Beyond Borders.” Ryan is the Elizabethtown Borough manager. Attendees will learn about changes that may impact the citizens of local communities under the new Lancaster County comprehensive plan. The public is welcome to attend. The Rheems Fire Department, 350 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown, will hold an Autumn Fest on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m. The child-friendly event will include a costume contest. Prizes will be presented to a girl and a boy in each of the following age groups: birth to age 2, ages 3 to 5, ages 6 and 7, and ages 8 to 10. There will also be games, crafts, snacks, door prizes, a pumpkin patch, and photos. Costume contest winners and door prize recipients will be announced at approximately 5:15 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. Donations will be accepted. Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown, will continue its Global Film Festival on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Gibble Auditorium. The festival’s theme is “Music Across Cultures.” The Irish film “Once” will be shown. Admission is free. UPCOMING MEETING
GEARS will hold its ninth annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The Fall Festival offers a variety of activities for people of all ages. The perennially popular hayride and barrel train ride will be back again, along with pumpkin golf, rock ’n’ roll racing with remote-controlled race cars, and inflatable rides. Other attractions will include an Activity Fun Fair hosted in conjunction with Elizabethtown College’s “Into the Streets” program. According to www.etown.edu, the annual student-led initiative brings together approximately 500 Elizabethtown College students, faculty members, staff members, and alumni for a collective day of service in which

restrictions for a set fee. Other groups that will be offering activities at the Fall Festival will include the Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) Key Club, EAHS Mini-THON, GEARS Kids Center, Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, and more. The event is made possible thanks to

The Gap Male Chorus On Oct. 20, the community is invited to “The Susquehanna Seasonal: Light the Stage,” a fundraiser benefiting the Marietta Center for the Arts, which will serve as the new home of the Susquehanna Stage Company.
Big things are on the horizon for the Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) as it anticipates moving into a new space in 2019. SSC board member Julia Howey said that the theater group acquired a building at 133 W. Market St., Marietta, that was formerly a church and will now be designated as the Marietta Center for the Arts. The goal is to have part of the space renovated and ready for an SSC production in February 2019. To help launch the new space, SSC will host “The Susquehanna Seasonal: Light the Stage” for the community on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at its new building. The fundraising event will feature a dinner catered by a local barbecue business and desserts created by local chef Tarik Boughelam. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on items in silent and live auctions, such as a charter flight, beverage tastings, See Susquehanna Seasonal pg 5

Her family established the Emily Whitehead Foundation to help fund more innovative treatments for childhood cancer. Proceeds from the Blood, Sweat, and Tears 5-Miler on Nov. 3 will benefit the foundation. The community is invited to join in a fun walk and run through Lawn, Colebrook, and the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail during the Blood, Sweat, and Tears 5-Miler on Saturday, Nov. 3. This

will perform in concert on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy. The concert will include classic hymn arrangements, Southern gospel music, spirituals, and music in modern styles. Admission is free, though a freewill offering will be received to benefit the chorus’s chosen mission project.
