National Night Out Will Promote Community Connections

For many people, the first time they interact with a police officer or other first responder can be under stressful circumstances. The Northwest Regional Police Department (NWRPD) wants to change that. Since 2012, the department has held National Night Out, an initiative to introduce community helpers in a fun and relaxed way.

This year’s National Night Out will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Mount Joy Township complex, 8855 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown. A rain date is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 7.

The event will feature police cars, fire trucks with demonstrations and EMS vehicles, along with food,

A mural is a massive painting or picture portraying a scene or depicting an idea. It typically adorns a large inside wall or the outside of a building.

For artists, a mural is a creative outlet, self-expression, its own art form. For Heart Artists, a mural can be therapeutic, represent inclusivity and become an avenue for connecting with a community.

It’s been said that integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching. For students in Elizabethtown Area School District, someone has been watching, and 29 students were recognized as “Do the Right Thing” recipients this past school year.

The program highlights good deeds performed by students and is a national initiative. Locally, it’s a collaborative effort between the school district, the Elizabethtown Police Department and Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC).

“We are so pleased to recognize these amazing students,” said Gail Viscome of EACTC. “Each of them helps make our schools and community a better place.”

The students were acknowledged at ceremonies held at their respective schools, where they were celebrated by teachers, administrators, parents and peers.

At the high school and middle school levels, Bryn Shebelsky helped a shy peer feel welcome and walk into school, while Julian Wallace guided an injured classmate to class daily. Olivia Wellenbecher was honored for demonstrating positivity and determination, and Kylee Koons was recognized for supporting struggling peers with kindness and encouragement. Landon Harnish was lauded because he cheerfully assisted classmates and kept the classroom tidy daily, and Jason Miller earned praise for helping a fellow student understand class material and feel included. Stefan Halbleib aided

said Trisha Goldsborough, Friendship Community’s marketing coordinator. “The (Heart) Artists get to see their work displayed on such a public place. It makes them feel like a big-time artist. Just the community involvement was a positive, getting them out there and meeting other people. It gets them publicity for their art and expands their portfolios.”

Recently, a mural created by Friendship Community’s Heart Artists - local individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism - was hung on an outside wall of the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum’s gift shop in Manheim Township. The mural was designed and painted to commemorate Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum’s 100th anniversary.

one wants to be heard.”

The 8-by-13-foot mural was designed and painted on portable, lightweight parachute material at the Friendship Community’s main office studio at 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, before being transported to Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. The mural took about a week to complete.

“There are a lot of colors and animals,” said Goldsborough. “It makes you happy to look at it. It’s supposed to give you the vibe of the Lititz area and the community we live in.”

“Local muralist Katie (Trainer) worked with us,” Goldsborough continued. “She made an outline on a small piece of paper, and then we went through each step. She traced everything out, and then the Heart Artists painted. The colors were their choices, but they had a general design to follow.”

“For me, my favorite part of the project was meeting people and working with the artists,” she added. “It’s been so rewarding. When we say Friendship Community, it’s true. We’re friends, and we’re a community.”

The bright, colorful mural was officially unveiled during a mural reveal ceremony on May 23. The community mural is designed to be a permanent feature at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum.

“Art is a way for everyone to communicate without speaking,” said Goldsborough. “We have a lot of artists who are nonverbal or have trouble communicating (verbally), and this gives them a way to talk. It’s also expressing yourself. Every -

More than 20 Heart Artists from all over Lancaster County contributed to the community mural.

“They’re really talented individuals who bring out so much joy through their art,” said Goldsborough. “You get that by looking at the mural. Each and every one of them always has a positive attitude. When you look at the mural, you can see how much joy they bring.”

Founded in 1972, Friendship Community also operates a studio and gallery for Heart Artists at 118 N. Water St., Lancaster. Currently, Friendship Community serves nearly 140 local individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism through its art studios, residential services, day programs and employment support.

“The fact that it’s been going so long shows there’s

a need for our services,” said Goldsborough. “Every single year we’re growing. There aren’t too many organizations out there that do what we do. We’ve just evolved and gained support.”

“We’re trying to be a safe space,” continued Goldsborough. “We’re trying to cultivate capabilities of individuals. We’re giving people independence and showcasing their abilities. We want everyone to have a way to be seen in the world. We want people to feel that they’re a part of their community.”

Hometown Hero Honored With Quilt of Valor

In the few years she’s served our country, Christine C. Emswiler has made a big impact. The 2022 Donegal High School graduate, now an Army corporal, was honored for her service with a Quilt of Valor presented by the Red Rose Quilters Guild in a ceremony organized in partnership with members of the American Legion

Auxiliary Post 809 on the square in Maytown last month.

More than 100 people came out for the ceremony, which was a surprise to Emswiler, home for a brief leave from duty.

“The Red Rose Quilters Guild honored her with a quilt for her outstanding service. She served in nine foreign countries in three years,” said Sara Gutshall of the American Legion

Auxiliary 809. “She is so deserving of this honor, and we want to thank her for her service.”

community service,” Gutshall shared. “She planted flowers at the square in Maytown for years. She also placed flowers on veterans’ graves on Memorial Day, and she was a member of Maytown Reformed UCC Church.”

While living locally, Emswiler demonstrated an early commitment to community service and impact. She received the American Legion Award in 2018 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Mount Joy Post 5752 Founders Award in 2022. While a student at Donegal, she was a member of the field hockey team that won the state championship in 2018, and she was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2021.

She achieved other local honors, including service as a Poppy Princess in Bainbridge, and she was a Girl Scout for 13 years, earning both her Bronze and Silver awards.

“She has done a lot of local

Emswiler joined the Army in June of 2022, entering as a private first class. Now a combat medic, she has served in countries including Slovenia, Hungary and Germany. In 2023, she made Army history by being part of the 10th Mountain Division in Operation Northern Forest, entering a port previously unused by the U.S. military. While on this mission, she was the only senior medic to be trained in air evacuation using a Skedco, a product used

a student who had fallen, and Steven McDonald mentored a younger student struggling with belonging.

Rosaliz Arredondo helped a friend get to school on time daily, while Tyrion Leitham obtained assistance for a family member experiencing a medical emergency.

Classmates Cora Strickler, Elyse Sprenkle and Kamryn Wasko alerted teachers to an issue in the classroom.

Skylar Richard immediately helped a staff member in need of medical assistance, and Annabelle Goretzke safely intervened during a student conflict to stop a fight. Donovan Fuddy demonstrated integrity in turning in $100 he found before school.

At Bainbridge Elementary School, Winston Lavala demonstrated leadership in helping a kindergartner navigate activities and find her mom, while Gabriel Esgrance invited a classmate to lunch, inspiring others to include the student. Ellie Stauffer helped a peer express gratitude with empathy and support, and Sophie Hostetter brought an elk habitat learning experience to the school.

Paxton Johnson comforted a crying student by choosing to sit with him, while Hiram Wolgemuth befriended and supported a new student during lunch and recess.

Bear Creek Elementary School students who were honored are Maverick Eves, who was recognized for quietly leading with kindness and lifting up others daily, as well as Anika Heistand, who proactively helped others and kept the classroom tidy. Mason Grimes was honored for leading by example with kindness, focus and respect.

Felicia Bentum was recognized for being a thoughtful leader who always puts others first, and Andy Kopp mentored a younger student with compassion and maturity.

At East High Elementary School, Gabriel Ruiz was honored for selflessly cleaning up a large mess made by other students without being asked, and Rose McDermott quietly gave up her spot in line to comfort an injured peer.

“Do the Right Thing” seeks to recognize students in the community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude or outstanding efforts and emphasizes random acts

of kindness that otherwise may go unnoticed.

“These students have shown the power of giving and compassion, in ways that are both big and small,” Viscome said.

“They’ve gone above and beyond to make their community a better place. The actions of each of these students has changed the experience of another student in school in a significant way.”

School staff members and police officers typically nominate students whose positive actions come to their attention, but any adult age 18 or over can nominate a student. A volunteer committee reviews nominations and selects a winner or winners for each month of the school year.

and positive setting,” said detective Chuck Tobias of NWRPD. “All are welcomed and encouraged to come to National Night Out.”

Held annually on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out began in 1984 to promote police and community partnerships. The first year, 2.5 million people across 400 communities in 23 states participated in the event. Over the years, the celebration has grown to encompass 38 million people in 17,000 communities throughout the United States.

Along with hosting National Night Out, NWRPD holds a variety of community outreach programs throughout the year, including “Cone with a Cop,” featuring ice cream and opportunities to interact with police officers.

Tobias encourages people of all ages to come to

National Night Out.

“You can expect to see local businesses, learn about local first responders, meet some searchand-rescue dogs and enjoy a night of community,” he said.

He emphasized, however, that people should pack their patience when arriving.

“Parking will fill up quickly,” he said. “It is strongly encouraged to park in the overflow lot located at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St. We will post on our Facebook page when the lot is full. We will have shuttles! Traffic will be heavy; please be patient.”

by military personnel for rescue operations.

In August of 2024, she was promoted to corporal and received an Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM), awarded to service members who distinguish themselves through heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service.

In March of 2025, she arrived back stateside to Louisiana, where she served with Cobra Company before joining Army headquarters company, where she is now in charge of field litter ambulances.

The Red Rose Quilters Guild actively participates in the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) program, awarding handmade quilts to service members and veterans touched by war. The guild members create the quilts, which are specifically sized and labeled according to QOVF guidelines, and present them as tokens of appreciation to military members for their service and sacrifice. Along with the presentation of the quilt, members of the American Legion Riders from Elizabethtown, Mount Joy and Marietta honored Emswiler at the ceremony.

“Sometimes you don’t truly realize the impact you have on people. Coming from such a small town, everyone knows everyone,” Emswiler said.

“And so coming home and seeing all these faces that I haven’t seen in

a while, it truly means a lot, and it brings me great joy and a smile to my face to see everyone again.”

Following the ceremony, Emswiler returned to Louisiana to complete more medic training prior to her next deployment.

Gretna Music To Present Concerts

Gretna Music will present a weekend of live performances at the Mt. Gretna Playhouse, located at 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mt. Gretna. From Friday, Aug. 8, to Sunday, Aug. 10, audiences will experience a lineup of musicians, from the innovative expression of the American Patchwork Quartet (APQ) to the world-renowned Canadian Brass and the artistry of pianist Einav Yarden.

Select concerts in the series will be preceded by a First Listen program - a

free, 20-minute mini concert. Prior to the APQ on Aug. 8 at 7:30 p.m., violinist Serafina Salvaterra will be featured at 6:45 p.m.

APQ, led by multiGrammy award-winning guitarist/vocalist Clay Ross, combines American folk songs with jazz, country, West African and East Asian influences. APQ’s debut album was recently nominated for “Best Folk Album” at the 67th Grammy Awards.

A free Gretna Music For Kids Event will be fea -

tured on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m., featuring two musicians from APQ, including Ross and Falu, who performs classical Indian music. Ross is also the founder of the Billboard chart-topping band Ranky Tanky and a teaching artist, working with institutions like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. The free family-friendly event does not require tickets.

dian Brass pairs classical favorites with humor and stage antics.
