Masonic Village Resident Turns 105 By Chelsea Peifer

On July 9, Masonic Village resident Florence “Flossie” Methlie celebrated her 105th birthday. She credits her health and longevity to one of her choices: “I didn’t go to the medicine cabinet.” Flossie’s advice to younger people would be to do the same: Do not be so quick to take medicine for every minor ailment. “She always was very health conscious,” said Flossie’s niece Nina Gaskill. Flossie never smoked or drank alcohol. She ate a lot of fish and seafood, and she exercised regularly. Gaskill noted that even when Flossie was 95, she was still regularly walking the halls and doing exercises and stretches in her room. Flossie is currently the oldest resident at Masonic Village. She and her husband, Charlie, moved to the campus more than 20 years ago and

settled into an apartment, but within a week he passed away. “Uncle Charlie made sure she got here,” Nina remarked. Born and raised in Weatherly, Flossie is the daughter of the late Elmer Young and Mable Rosenstock. She had two older brothers, two younger brothers, and a younger sister. When Flossie’s mother came home from the hospital with her baby sister, she said, “I guess I got another brother.” She was elated to instead find out she now had a sister, Betty - Nina’s mother. “Even though they were 11 years apart, they were very close,” Nina said. “And we’ve always been close because my mother and her were so close.” One of Flossie’s fond childhood memories was making homemade ice cream as a family every Sunday. Her oldest brother would take the motor off the washing machine and configure it to churn the ice cream so he did not have to do it by hand. See Flossie Methlie pg 4
