Elizabethtown Grads Urged To Stay Curious BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hen it came time to write her graduation speech, Elizabethtown Area High School valedictorian Hannah Kline turned to her peers for help. “I asked you about what you would say to everyone graduating today,” she told her fellow graduates at the school’s ceremony on June 8, adding that although the Class of 2021 has unique memories of high school, the members share much in common. “I admire the tenacity that each of you have, for this diploma was not given to you on a silver platter. You earned it. And for that, I congratulate you.” Salutatorian Marcial Limas noted the challenges he believes are facing his generation, such as climate change, overpopulation and racism, but he emphasized his faith in his classmates. “What gives me hope is I know all of us are willing and able to be difference makers, and every day is a chance for us to show the world what an E-town graduate can mean to their community,” he said. Seiders told the Class of 2021 to “be curious, not judgmental,” adding, “Curiosity is what creates. It’s what brings life, and it’s what changes the world. I urge you when you face adversity, of which you will see much, that you face it with a heart full of curiosity and see only what could be.”

Members of Girl Scout Troop 70614 have been working hard to “make the world a better place,” one part of the Girl Scout Law. In May, the Junior troop members beautified the grounds around the amphitheater in Elizabethtown Borough Park, earning their Bronze Award in the process. The Bronze is the highest award that can be earned by Girl Scout Juniors, who are fourth- and fifth-grade students. See Service pg 6

Failure, Hobson noted, can be a blessing in disguise. “Failure forces you to see yourself as you really are, rather than as what you think you should be,” she remarked. “It forces you to make decisions that you never would have otherwise but might just lead to something extraordinary.”

Gary Schatz likes to blow things up, and the Marietta community can thank him for it. Schatz, a certified pyrotechnician, is the driving force behind Marietta Fireworks, a nonprofit organization that puts on an annual fireworks show. This year’s display will begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, in War Memorial Park, 344 E. Walnut St. The rain date for the event is Sunday, July 4.
In her speech, principal Maura Hobson reminded the graduates that life rarely goes according to plan. “There is no manual on how to succeed at ‘adulting,’ no one plan that guarantees you success,” she said. “All you can do is work toward what makes you happy. Sometimes, that means going off book. Often, that means failing.”

emphasized that her experience in the school district taught her much more than memorizing facts. “I may not have the periodic table of elements memorized anymore, know the plot of ‘The Odyssey’ or why JFK was so important to history, but I do remember a few simple things,” she stated. “In high school I learned to be kind. I learned to have patience with others and more importantly, that not everyone is going to like you, and that’s OK. The most powerful lesson that I learned, however, is that I, we, are all capable of greatness.” Diplomas were awarded to 304 seniors at the ceremony, held at White Family Dental Stadium on the school’s campus. Superintendent Michele Balliet addressed the students, sharing that she grew up alongside them, as she joined the district when the Class of 2021 entered kindergarten. “Through it all, you have learned how to adapt, change, adjust and grow,” she said. “All of these skills and experiences are now part of your personal story.” School board president Terry

Sick of hours of traffic heading to Maryland or Jersey shores? Not to mention crowded beaches and boardwalk shops that make a big dent in your wallet. You don’t have to go down the shore to enjoy a beach vacation. Pennsylvania offers an entirely different beach experience. More than likely, if you live in PA, you’re within an hour or two of a beach. Most of the lakefront beaches in the commonwealth are in our pristine state parks, but you’ll find private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to mid-September. Many of these beaches have a swim-atyour-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road. You’ll find links to all the state park beaches on www.townlively.com/ summer-vibes-at-pa-beaches. • Bald Eagle State Park, Howard • Black Moshannon State Park, Philipsburg

Community Blood Drive

Wednesday, July 7th 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm
The girls started the project by brainstorming ways to help their community. Originally, they planned to fix up areas around the playground in the park. “We were thinking we were going to build bird and bat boxes,” said troop member Ava Livelsberger. “But we started talking to people from the park, and we realized that wasn’t something that solved a problem for someone. We wanted to do a project that solved a problem.” Instead, the girls organized a park cleanup and met with Ken Dyer, Elizabethtown Borough’s parks superintendent, to discuss needs in the park. They decided to replace a strip of grass bordering the amphitheater with a mulched bed of perennials and annuals, adding beauty to the area and making it easier for groundskeepers to mow while preventing damage to the amphitheater from weed whackers. To complete the project, the troop obtained donations from River Road Produce, Warburton Nursery and Greenhouses, and J.B. Hostetter & Sons. Ed Ziegler of Ed’s Landscaping Supply met with the girls to discuss plant options and gardening techniques and provided a sod cutter for the girls to use to dig up the grass. The troop members removed the sod, fertilized the soil, planted a variety of plants including marigolds and hostas,

and mulched the space. The girls plan to make a summer watering schedule and check on their plantings regularly. For troop member Valerie Hall, the project provided a fun way to give back to the community. “I liked getting to plant the flowers, and I like watering them,” she said. Gwen Hoover said the hardest part was using the sod cutter and removing the sod. “It was hard to lift the rolls of dirt,” she recalled. “They were heavy!” Faith McClellan said she’s proud of how the project turned out. “I wanted to do this project because it’s something good for the community, and it also looks really nice,” she stated. Her fellow troop member Piper Checkeye agreed, adding, “I really liked that we got to help our community, and I really liked planting the hostas because we got to dig bigger and deeper holes.” Brianna Thatcher noted that she had helped her mom plant flowers before, but not to this extent. “This was the most gardening I’ve ever done,” she said. “I liked planting the marigolds the best.” For Eleni Brehm, the project was just another thing she loves about being a Girl Scout. “This was fun to do, but my favorite part of being a Girl Scout is when you knock on someone’s door and they open it and say, ‘Oh, it’s a Girl Scout selling cookies! Let me go get my money!’”

Cavod Academy will host a musical theater camp for children this summer. BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Faith, fun and fellowship will take center stage when Cavod Academy hosts a theater camp at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Campers will perform “Singin’ in the Rain Jr.” and will spend two weeks learning all about live theater while making friends, said Connie Dienner, executive director. “The camp is a chance for the campers to learn how to work together to create a show from start to finish,” she noted. “They really bond during camp. It’s a great time for friendship and relationship building.” The camp is open to youths ages 10 to 18 and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays from Monday, Aug. 2, through Thursday, Aug. 12. On Friday, Aug. 13, the camp will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the end of the camp, the campers will put on a full production, complete with costumes, lighting and music; performances will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 15. Cavod is a faith-based program, and in addition to rehearsal, the camp will feature devotional time and time for sharing. Master classes

will be taught by theater professionals as well. “It’s really impressive what the kids can pull off in two weeks,” said Julie Haney, artistic director of Cavod’s new Manheim location, which will open later this summer. “The camp gives them a chance to really develop their theater skills.” This is the 10th year Cavod has offered a summer theater camp. It’s a natural extension of the New Holland-based nonprofit’s mission, Dienner said. “Our slogan is, ‘Create With Purpose,’” she stated. “The strength of Cavod is believing in the abilities of all people and pulling out their God-given talent.” Dienner stressed that the camp is open to anyone, regardless of theater background. “You don’t need any experience,” she said. “Everyone is very supportive, and our team is very friendly. If anyone is shy going into camp, it’s amazing to see how the kids come out of their shell during camp. The parents will be amazed when they see the show.” A discounted camp rate will be offered through Thursday, July 1. For more information on the camp, visit https://cavod.org or call 717-354-3355.

It’s an essential school supply, but for some students, a new backpack isn’t in the budget. That’s where Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) steps in. REYS offers Backpacks to School, providing free backpacks and school supplies to students in grades one through 12. “Any family in need is eligible for a backpack,” said Jeremy Freimark, REYS program director. “We serve primarily Lancaster County, but we also have served families in surrounding areas including York and Harrisburg.” REYS, located at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, has been providing the service since 2012 and has given away thousands of backpacks. “We have been able to provide more than 600 backpacks each year, and the majority of them are not repeat families,” Freimark noted. Backpacks are stuffed with school supplies, including notebooks, pocket folders, markers and colored pencils. The registration deadline to receive a backpack is Saturday, July 31. Backpack distribution will be Monday, Aug. 9, through Friday, Aug. 13. “After families register, they’ll be assigned a time to come in during that week in August to pick up their backpack,” Freimark explained. “We try to make it an individualized experience for the recipients, and the students get to pick out their backpack.” The backpack program helps REYS meet its mission of providing community service, he noted. “REYS is here to support students in three ways: spiritual guidance, academic assistance and social support,” he stated. The backpack program also serves another purpose, he added, as it brings families into the center and introduces them to what REYS offers. Programming at REYS is faith-based and is available for students in grades one through 12. It includes homework help, sports and music programs, meals and more. REYS is always looking for donations of backpacks and supplies, as well as volunteers to pack the backpacks. “For anyone who wants to volunteer, it’s an opportunity for them to walk beside the youth center and help support families in need in our community,” Freimark said. Volunteers can call the center at 717-6539511 or email office@reys.org

Freimark emphasized that the backpack program is part of REYS’ overall goal of supporting students. “We offer this in addition to assisting with the academic needs of the students in our community,” he stated. “It’s a great way for us to reach out.” For more information on the b a c k p a c k program, visit https://reys.org. Jeremy Freimark, program director at REYS, invites families to sign up for the Backpacks to School program.

Marietta Fireworks will put on a display on Saturday, July 3.
“Fireworks have been a passion of mine since the early ’80s,” said Schatz. “I like doing the layout and the design of the show.” Marietta had a fireworks show for years, but eventually the organizers of the event were no longer able to put on the display. In 2017, after two years without fireworks in Marietta, Schatz came on board. The first fireworks show under his direction happened in 2018. “I jumped in and was like, ‘We can do this. We can get this done,’” he recalled, noting that he handles fundraising for the fireworks and also recruits people to help with the event. “I don’t give up.” Still, passion alone isn’t enough to put on a successful show. It takes a lot of hard work, Schatz emphasized. “It’s so expensive to do a good fireworks show, and it’s so indepth in terms of planning,” he stated. “I work on this year-round, from getting the proper permits to fundraising to getting people on board to help with our committee.” Marietta Fireworks is run entirely by volunteers. Most of the fundraising comes from donation request letters and Facebook posts. “We’ve gotten a really great response from the community,” Schatz noted. “If it wasn’t for individuals, businesses and organizations supporting us, it wouldn’t happen.” Before the fireworks begin, Community Bible Church will host a variety of family-friendly activities beginning at 5 p.m. The church, located at 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, makes a perfect spot for viewing the fireworks, Schatz said. Festivities at the church include will food trucks, a bar-
rel train for children, yard games and a bounce house. Juggler Chris Ivey will perform at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted upon entrance to the parking lot, and all proceeds will go to Marietta Fireworks. Schatz said the fireworks display will be bigger and better than ever this year, noting that last year’s show opened with 13 “cakes” or boxes containing hundreds of firework shells. “It looked so incredible,” he said. “I’m planning on doing even more cakes this year. Last year we had the biggest finale I’ve ever seen in a show. It was two minutes and 21 seconds, and that length is just unheard of. Wait ’til you see what we have in store for this year.” For more information on Marietta Fireworks, to donate or to watch a livestream of the event, search for “Marietta Fireworks” on Facebook. Donations are also accepted by PayPal.

Tthe Center for Creative Exploration (CCE) at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D), 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, will host youth and pre-college classes this summer. Over three weeks in July, beginning on Monday, July 12, the CCE will host dozens of weeklong, in-person youth art classes. Students in grades one to nine can take morning, noon, and afternoon classes, choosing from a variety of offerings in each timeslot. The daily schedule allows time for supervised lunches and snack breaks on campus between classes. This year, classes will return to an in-person format. Apart from foundational classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, this summer features a number of new classes on more specific topics, such as Animal Specimen Drawing, Urban and Public Art, Tabletop Game Design, Creating Art in Photoshop, and Exploring Cultures Through Craft. To better help parents balance work with their children’s time in camp, CCE has partnered with co-working space The Candy Factory, Warehouse D, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, to offer a discounted weekly rate for adults with children in art classes. Parents are invited to drop their children off for camp in the morning, walk or drive two blocks to The Candy Factory to work, and then pick their children up when classes end. The pre-college courses are designed for students in ninth through 12th grades, allowing them to earn college credit. The two-week intensive classes with professional artists and faculty will be offered on campus or online or via a hybrid option. Classes will begin on July 12 and will run in two consecutive two-week sessions, finishing by Friday, Aug. 6. Among the pre-college options are foundational classes in figure drawing, observational painting, color theory, 3D modeling in Autodesk Maya, and portfolio preparation. Other pre-college classes focus on graphic design/visual branding, concept art, digital painting in Adobe Photoshop, video production, creative writing, introduction and advanced 2D animation in Adobe Animate, and printmaking. For a complete week-byweek schedule or to register, visit www.pcad.edu/cce.
