Can playing video games have a positive impact on a teen’s life? For the members of Elizabethtown Area High School’s esports team, the answer is a definitive “yes.”
The team made history the weekend of May 31 to June 1 by capturing its first-ever Pennsylvania Interscholastic Esports Association (PIEA) state championship in Overwatch, a popular team-based game. The championship match, held at Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, pitted E-town against a skilled Westmont Hilltop squad in a high-stakes showdown that
tested the local team’s focus and resilience.
As coach Austin Henderson explained, Overwatch features two teams of five players each who compete to complete specific objectives on various game environments called “maps.”
“Each map has unique layouts and objectives, such as capturing points or escorting payloads. In esports competitions, teams play a series of these maps in a match,” he shared. “Since matches are best of five, the first team to win three maps wins the match. Matches are typically played remotely, with finals being held at in-person events.”
After a slow start - dropping
the first map - E-town regrouped with determination, battled to a tie on the second map and then surged ahead, winning the next three maps in a row. The 3-1 victory sealed the team’s place as state champion and marked a major milestone for the program.
Henderson said he expected the team to do well, but he was still surprised by the win. In addition to the state grand championship, the team won its spring conference championship.
“From the very beginning, we knew we had a talented group, but to go undefeated throughout the regular season, winning every match 3-0, was just incredible,” he said. “That set a high bar, and

The Elizabethtown Fair Queen Program is accepting applicants for the 2025 fair season, and the job comes with more than just a crown.
“Running for fair queen opens up the opportunity to explore the fair in a whole new way,” said Lia Swartz, fair queen program coordinator. “Many of the events that the queen and court will participate in during the week are new for the girls even if they have been attending or exhibiting for years. Our entire court - every girl who runs for queen is considered part of the court - will get to work closely with the fair board and community members who make the fair happen.”
Once the fair week is over, the job continues.
“There is opportunity to continue promoting the fair at community events, parades and the
state fair queen competition,” Swartz explained. “The fair queen competition is a scholarship for not only the queen but

At Elizabethtown College, students in the Public Heritage Studies Program have the opportunity to explore and preserve the rich local history of Lancaster County and beyond, while gaining hands-on experience that will prepare them for careers in museums, archives and history preservation.
While the program is open to college students, its benefits to the community extend well beyond the campus.
The roots of the Public Heritage Studies Program run deep. Director Jean-Paul Benowitz, who has taught history at Elizabethtown for 33 years, began developing local history courses after publishing books on the history of the college and the borough in 2014 and 2015. What began as a certificate program has grown into a full-fledged minor, supported by the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, which highlights the regional heritage of the Amish, Mennonites and Church of the Brethren.

“The fair queen should be able to speak to a crowd as well as interacting in small groups. She should be able to carry herself with professionalism as she attends events,” Swartz said. “The fair queen will be asked to jump in and help during events and is expected to do so with enthusiasm. The best fair queens are those who love their fair and the community and wish to represent them both. Applicants do not need to be from an agriculture background but should be excited about promoting all aspects of the fair.”

“The fair queen program is so much more than a ‘pageant.’ The contest is full of professional development opportunities, including public speaking and interviews,” Swartz shared. “Over the years, I have seen girls who have run multiple years grow in their professionalism and confidence. It is so much more than just winning the crown. The entire court is given opportunities during the fair week to participate.”

Edith Mae Schwab passed from this life on June 9, 2025, in her home. She was 97. Edith was best known as a devoted wife to Henry, and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. To their family, Edith and Henry’s 67year marriage was an enduring picture of steadfast faithfulness. Since Henry’s passing in 2021, Edith kept a lamp next to a photo of him. Each day she’d greet him first thing in the morning and later say ‘Good night, Henry,’ turning it off as the last thing she did before retiring for the night. Born in 1927 in Laureldale, PA, to Urban John Jones and Esther Merkel Jones, Edith’s early childhood was marked by the Great Depression. The fourth of five children, Edith recalled one day when they only had a nickel left in the house. Her teenage years were marked by WWII, when she lost her beloved brother George, who was a U.S. Marine. It was in processing this profound loss, and facing her doubts, which led to her coming to faith in Jesus and sensing His hand in her life. Her faith grew from that point. As a young woman Edith had a vibrant life. She attended the Charles Morris Price School of Advertising and Journalism at night, while working at Curtis Publishing and then the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. Later, when her children were in high school, she picked this career back up, working at Springhouse Publishing, where she was voted their first ever Employee of the Year. She loved working with words. She also loved music and singing- at one point, as a young woman, she was a member of four different choirs. A highlight was singing Handel’s Messiah with the Philadelphia Choral Society at the Academy of Music. She also joyfully joined a roving quartet that sang in many tiny churches in New Jersey, and at least once, was part of a singing flash mob on the Philadelphia subway. She was also a member of American Youth Hostels and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She shared many of these experiences with her beloved sister, Marie. Edith was devoted to her family and wanted her children to have a broad range of experiences, encouraging all their endeavors. From 1988 on, she fully embraced her ‘Mommom’ persona. She loved her grandchildren fiercely, celebrating both their accomplishments and their character as they grew to adulthood. Edith was a 30-year cancer survivor, overcame many other physical challenges, and while her hearing and sight failed her in her final years, her mind remained sharp and curious to the end, inquiring about family members even on her very last evening.
Edith is survived by her three children; George, husband of Mary; Nancy, wife of Grant Sung; and John, husband of Stephanie; also, by her nine grandchildren; George, Corrie, Angela, Adam, Daniel, Timothy, Andrew, Elizabeth, and Kaela; and her five great-grandchildren; Arabella, Violet, Zoë, Martin, and Lillian. John, Stephanie, and Corrie were thankful for the opportunity to care for Edith in her final years.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday morning, June 28 at Kraybill Meetinghouse, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy, PA 17552, at 10:00 followed by a light lunch. Central Pennsylvania is the perfect spot for the program, Benowitz said. Lancaster and York played pivotal roles in early American history, serving as temporary capitals and the birthplace of the Articles of Confederation. The region was also home to Thaddeus Stevens, a key figure behind the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments.
“It is not an exaggeration to say the heritage of this area was important in the establishment of American democracy,” Benowitz remarked. “And the future of American democracy relies on our understanding of our local heritage, building on this important legacy.”
As Benowitz explained, students who want to earn a minor choose from a concentration in either applied history or historic preservation. “Courses are open to all students of all years/ cohorts and all academic majors,” he stated. “The classes are interdisciplinary; students from a wide variety of majors take these courses and complete the minor.”
Student projects through the program have included researching and reporting about every building on the Elizabethtown College campus to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the college’s founding. Beyond the campus, students have worked in neighboring communities to preserve the past.
“In the fall and spring semesters, all Public Heritage Studies courses have a community-based learning component requiring students to conduct field work and research in the local community,” Benowitz said. “These projects are also conducted during the
summer through a program at the college called Summer Creative Arts and Research program (SCARP).”
Each spring semester since 2019, students research a report about a historically significant property in the National Historic District of Marietta, where the student explains the architectural style of the property, the history of the property and biographical information about all the people who lived in the property and contributed to local history, Benowitz said.
“Every fall semester, students choose a local historic site or museum and conduct research about an artifact in the collection’s archives, producing print and electronic versions of a brochure explaining the significance of the artifacts to the collection’s history and enticing researchers to visit the local historic site or museum,” he stated.
This coming fall semester, students will conduct genealogical research about their family history and film a presentation to show family members to reveal interesting facts about their heritage based on the PBS show “Finding Your Roots.”
Students have also created online maps that are used by genealogists and historians conducting research.
The college program helps students discover more about local history while also providing opportunities to share their findings on a larger scale.
“Several honors students have made their Public Heritage Studies projects into their senior thesis,” Benowitz remarked. “They have presented at local and national conferences. These thesis projects have contributed to their being accepted
into competitive Public Heritage Studies graduate programs and careers in the field of public history and historic preservation.”
Along with exploring the electronic maps students have created, Benowitz encourages people to support historical research by getting involved with the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, Marietta Restoration Associates or the Historic Harrisburg Association.
“Donate historically significant books, letters, documents, photographs, artifacts to various local historical societies, record or write down memories of local history and donate to the library/archival collections at various local historical societies,” he said.
Benowitz also encourages people to sign up to participate in City As Text - Places As Text, an all-day program he will lead that will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Pennsylvania Chautauqua Hall of Philosophy, 212 Gettysburg Ave., Mount Gretna.
“City As Text is an active experiential learning approach to exploring local history and culture,” Benowitz said. Small groups will explore, observe and reflect through the event. To learn

Bank of Bird-in-Hand expanded its Gelt Bus mobile banking service to a new location at Mount Joy Gift & Thrift, 3141 Mount Joy Road, Mount Joy. Service began on June 6.

& Thrift every Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., extending the bank’s reach into western Lancaster County. The new stop complements existing locations across Lancaster, Chester, Lebanon, Berks and upper Dauphin counties. Currently, the bank operates three mobile banking buses serving 14 locations.

In 2020, the fleet expanded to include two additional 34-foot RVs, each equipped with an ATM, teller window and a walk-in service area where customers can open accounts with a Bank of Bird-in-Hand team member. In June 2025, the bank will introduce a fourth Gelt Bus to serve four additional locations in the Lykens Valley area. they continued to rise to the occasion in the state playoffs.”
The team is composed of captain Jackson Langlois, Camreon Cantey, Madalyn Guerrisi, Anthony Lazzari, Jaymian Ortiz and Liam Shriner.
“We have a relatively young team, but they work incredibly well together,” Henderson said. “They dedicated a ton of practice time to honing their individual skills and, more importantly, to understanding how to function as a cohesive unit. You could see that growth and synergy develop with every match.”
He described losing the first map at the championship as “a real gut punch,” but noted that the team came back strong, facing a near-loss in the second map.
“To push past that frustration, regroup and then come together as a team to win out the rest of the series and secure the championship? That showed immense mental fortitude and character,” he said. “This team represents the very best of Elizabethtown. They are champions not just in skill, but in their sportsmanship, their dedication and their ability to overcome adversity. They’ve proven that with hard work, teamwork and a never-give-up attitude, anything is possible.”
The high school has had an esports team since 2018. Henderson became involved with the team two years ago and was appointed as adviser and head coach at the beginning of this past school year. The team has previously qualified for state playoffs but hadn’t made
it to the in-person finals before this year.
The sport expanded from two competitive teams to five this year, with four making the playoffs and two reaching states, Henderson said.
He acknowledges that esports might not be a subject many people understand well.
“Imagine a traditional sport like basketball or soccer, but instead of a physical ball and court, the competition takes place in a video game,” he said. “‘Esports’ is short for ‘electronic sports,’ and it’s essentially organized, competitive video gaming.”
Like other sports, esports players train rigorously, rely on teamwork to succeed and use skills such as strategic planning to win.
“Players are constantly talking, strategizing and adapting in real-time, much like a football quarterback calling plays,” he said. “It demands incredible mental skill. While it might not involve physical exertion in the same way
traditional sports do, esports requires immense mental agility, quick decision-making under pressure, strategic thinking, problem-solving and lightning-fast reflexes.”
He added that many colleges and universities now offer esports scholarships, so talented gamers can forge a path in the sport after high school. And, he noted, esports has millions of dedicated fans around the globe who watch live competitions in arenas or stream them online.
Henderson expressed appreciation for the team’s local fanbase, and he’s anticipating a successful upcoming season.
“What’s truly exciting for Elizabethtown High School esports is that every single competitive player is set to return next year,” he said. “That continuity is huge. We’ve built a strong foundation, and we’re definitely looking forward to collecting even more trophies in the future!”

The Giant Company, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, recently announced the return of the Healing the Planet Grant Program.
The grant program, funded by the Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, aims to invest in tree plantings across the company’s operating areas in Pennsylvania. A total of $112,000 in funding will be awarded to tax-exempt organizations for tree planting projects this year. Eligible projects must be shovel ready and include tree planting and direct costs relating to tree planting.
The 2025 Healing the
Planet grant program is accepting online applications for grants of up to $4,000 now through Tuesday, July 1, via the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful website. Individuals may visit www.keeppabeautiful.org/ grants-awards/grants and select “Healing the Planet Grant Program, funded by the Giant Company.”
Eligible expenses include but are not limited to trees native to Pennsylvania, equipment, tree signage, tools and supplies. Preference will be given to applications that aim to plant the highest number of trees. Awardees will be announced in late July.
This is the fifth year that the Giant Company has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer Healing the Planet grants. In the past four years, more than $1.2 million has been awarded to 140 recipients for projects which connected people and families to green spaces; improved or helped to protect local waterways and water resources; supported projects that addressed food waste prevention, reduction and recovery; and promoted tree planting initiatives.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has supported community improvement initiatives and encouraged community
leadership, responsibility and respect for the environment since 1990. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, a state affiliate of Keep American Beautiful Inc. has more than 35 years of experience in organizing volunteer-driven community improvement events. Visit www.keeppabeautiful.org for more information on programs or to find local events. Other ways that Giant works to heal the planet include zero-waste initiatives, offsetting emissions, reducing food waste and producing green energy and plastic reduction efforts.
