Bright and early on several recent weekend mornings, 10 girls from Elizabethtown/Donegal Cadette Troop 70595 could be found hard at work at the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. When the Cadettes found out that the museum’s garden was in need of some improvements, they set about making plans and gathering donations for materials and supplies to update the garden. Troop leader Julie Houck explained that the traditional 18th century Pennsylvania German garden, located behind the museum building, is designed to illustrate to visitors what herbs and vegetables would have been planted in a Lancaster County home garden in 1760. The traditional wood fence surrounding the garden was in need of repair, so the girls - together

with help from parent volunteers - took down the deteriorating fence and constructed a new fence around the garden. In commemoration of their efforts, each of the girls’ names is printed on a fence post on one side of the garden. The group also weeded and cleaned up the area and replaced the wooden beams around the raised beds inside the garden. Next steps in the project include planting more herbs and vegetables in the raised garden beds inside the fence. Over the summer, Troop 70595 plans to continue to maintain the garden. Julie noted that the foods grown in the garden are used for hearth cooking classes and demonstrations at the Winters Heritage House Museum. Any plants that are not needed for museum purposes are donated to the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown. See Girl Scouts pg 2

And it’s not just physical; it’s about using your mind, too.” The bulk of the events took place at Spooky Nook Sports, with shuttle buses running to events held at other locations, including the Lancaster YMCA, Amos Herr Park, Hempfield High School, Evergreen Golf Course, Leisure
