A Heart for Bainbridge

Gina Mariani has an honorary title of “Mayor of Bainbridge,” and while the moniker might have started out as a joke, Mariani is serious about her love for the town.

“Bainbridge is such a great little community,” she said. “Everybody just takes care of each other. I like that feeling. Bainbridge is like a family.”

Mariani has lived in Bainbridge since age 17.

A Lancaster Catholic High School graduate with experience in business ownership and marketing, she seized an opportunity in 1987 when the owners of a bar at Second and Race streets offered to finance her purchase.

She ran the popular gathering spot for years before selling it and extending the same financing to the new owner, wanting to “pay

it forward.” Later, while splitting time between Pennsylvania and Maryland to help with youth programs, she learned the bar had closed and fallen into disrepair.

Where others saw a mess, she saw potential.

“I didn’t want to reopen it as a bar,” she said. “I thought, ‘I’m going to do something for me this

Finding Fellowship on the Homeschool Journey

Homeschooling can be a worthy but lonely task. The Christian Homeschool Association of Pennsylvania (CHAP) wants to help.

The organization will host a stop on the CHAP Hometown Tour on Friday, March 13, from 4 to 8:30 p.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy.

“Most homeschoolers feel like they are on a bit of an island and feel like they are going about this enormous task alone. But they are not!” shared Ginger Wayde, CHAP board member. “There are many resources

Putting People First

It sounds like something way out there. It sounds like something impersonal. It sounds like something space-age.

Robotic surgery may not be exactly what it sounds like, but it does represent an advancement in medicine, a step forward in treating people.

“When I talk to patients, I think a fair number think that a robot is performing surgery, which is why I don’t like the name,” said Dr. David Vaughn, a board-certified general surgeon. “There is no robot doing surgery. What I do is laparoscopic surgery, which involves cutting small holes in the abdomen area. Robotic surgery is an advancement in laparoscopic surgery.”

An experienced laparoscopic surgeon, Vaughn has performed more than 2,000 robotic surgery procedures, about half of which have been done at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Lititz Hospital, 1500 Highlands Drive, Lititz. Vaughn performs about 350 surgeries each year, about 140 of which are robotic in nature.

“The reason I like it is because I can do more advanced surgery with laparoscopic surgery,” said Vaughn. “It’s safer for patients, I’m faster and it’s easier. It makes it easier to do more fine movements and more complex surgeries. Patients generally have fewer complications and less pain associated with smaller incisions.”

“It’s also fun,” continued Vaughn. “It’s like driving a Ford Taurus or a Ferrari. I’d take the Ferrari every time.”

Event to Explore Passover Tradition

“Messiah in the Passover,” a demonstration and meal showing how Jesus fulfilled the ancient feast of Passover, will be held on Monday, March 16, at 5 p.m. at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy. This event will be conducted by Ari Hauben of Chosen People Ministries.

“Messiah in the Passover” will begin with the traditional Passover Seder table, complete with

all the articles of this important Jewish celebration. Hauben will explain the symbolic meanings of the various items of the Passover feast and highlight their relationship to the Last Supper that the Messiah celebrated with the disciples, giving special emphasis on the redemptive significance of the crucifixion.

The event’s purpose is to give the Christian community insight

into Jewish traditions so that the Jewish roots of Christianity can be better understood. This program also aims to help the Jewish and Christian communities to understand their common heritage. The event is open to the public, including both the Christian and Jewish communities. A freewill offering will be received. For more information, contact George Leyh

time. What do I like? I like cartoons. I like kids. I love ice cream.’”

Eighteen years ago, she opened GiGi’s Ice Cream Bar - named for the nickname her nieces gave her - and business has been sweet ever since.

The location is open April to September, and over the years, Mariani has employed hundreds of local youths at the shop. Pictures of some of them don the walls of the shop, and Mariani proudly highlights where her former employees are now. Some are married, some are in college and a few help with Mariani’s other main venture, a summer playground program.

The camp provides programming and field trips for students ages 5 to 14, and it’s held at Conoy Township Park.

“We have 225 kids in our program,” Mariani said. “We do local field trips and longer trips. We go swimming, bowling, roller skating, to Hersheypark, Urban Air, Go ‘N Bananas. But we also make sure the kids have time to just play. They need time to get outside and just be kids.”

There is a minimal charge for children to attend the summer program, and the rest of the expenses are offset by a unique system Mariani put in place from the beginning. Each camper must sell 40 tickets for giveaway items, with the proceeds from the give -

away supporting the playground program.

Mariani also hosts fundraisers to support the camp, including a recent event that put local celebrities behind bars, tasked with raising enough bail money to get out of “jail.”

“I find sponsors for playground if kids can’t afford to attend,” Mariani said. “I always find a way.”

Her goal for the summer playground is to bring back old-fashioned fun.

“Can you think of all the stuff that made you happy when you were a kid?” she asked. “Take that and transfer it over to the playground. I want them to be creative, to become problem-solvers and to have fun.”

Beyond GiGi’s and the playground program, Mariani serves as chair of the township supervisors, is on the board of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society, runs both Halloween and Memorial Day parades, coordinates the annual poppy program to raise funds for veterans and is the secretary/treasurer of the Conoy Youth Athletic Association. She coached soccer for more than 20 years, and she was a firefighter for Bainbridge Fire Company, earning Firefighter of the Year. She’s also a crossing guard, and she has recently begun overseeing a partnership between

Masonic Villages and Bainbridge, encouraging intergenerational activities with the youths she serves.

“Whatever anyone needs help with, I help,” Mariani said simply. As for that title of “mayor,” Mariani recalled it started as a joke as she had developed a reputation in town for being a go-to resource.

“People would call the fire company with a question, and they would say, ‘I don’t know. Call the mayor,’” she said. “It was a joke. I thought, ‘They must think I know everything,’ and I have to laugh, because I’ll get a call and someone will say, ‘Hey do you have suchand-such’s number?’ And I usually do!”

Asked what she does for fun in her free time, Mariani doesn’t hesitate to answer.

“Everything I do is fun! All the stuff I do for the kids is fun,” she said. “I’m a kid at heart.”

She raised two girls and now loves spending time with her granddaughter, and she doesn’t envision ending her commitment to Bainbridge any time soon. Now 65, she has no plans to stop giving back to her favorite small town.

“It’s too late to quit now,” she said with a laugh. “I’m too involved. I love this town, and I don’t know what I would do if I retired. I’d be bored. You rest, you rust.”

incisions help make the surgery minimally invasive.

“The abdomen is inflatable, and you can operate inside an inflated abdomen,” said Vaughn. “We put air inside the abdomen cavity and inflate it so we have space to work. It’s like having mini wrists inside the abdomen. Robotic surgery gives surgeons four arms instead of two.”

“We put a camera in the belly, and that’s our eyes,” he added. “When I do robotic surgery, I hold two instruments and someone holds the camera. It makes it so much easier. Another benefit of robotic surgery is all the images are 3D, not 2D. The cameras we put in the abdomen have two cameras, and I’m seeing 3D images.”

Typically, Vaughn employs robotic surgery for procedures involving things like hernias, colons, thyroids, gallbladders and skin lumps and bumps. Robotic surgery is also used by orthopedics, urologists, gynecologists, pediatricians and head-and-neck surgeons.

“The goal, obviously, is to make people better,” said Vaughn, a resident of Manheim Township. “As a doctor, you’ll treat the problem. The great thing about being a

surgeon is I get to fix people. When I’m through, you’re cured. There’s a lot of satisfaction as a surgeon because we’re curing people and not just treating them. That’s why I chose surgery over other forms of medicine.”

Vaughn has always been good with his hands, and he genuinely cares about people and their well-being.

“My grandfather and great-grandfather were both doctors,” said Vaughn. “I had a flavor of that growing up. I got to see them taking care of patients. It’s been something I’ve been around since I was 5 or 6 years old.

I’ve always wanted to be a doctor.”

“Doctors solve problems, and I like fixing things,” Vaughn added. “I grew up in a household where my dad taught me how to fix things. It was very satisfying. Fixing things with my hands was like, ‘I did that.’ That’s where my decision to be a surgeon came from.”

County in 2010, Vaughn lived in Doylestown, where he grew up. He’s been a doctor for 21 years, 16 of which have been as a surgeon.

“I view medicine as a science, but there’s also an art to medicine,” said Vaughn. “A lot of it is knowing patients and interacting with patients. The art of medicine is interacting with patients. They have to trust you, and they have to believe in you. I really enjoy when patients are excited about the care they have been provided. It warms my heart. It makes me go to work every day.”

“The greatest evolution I’ve gone through is patience,” Vaughn continued. “Developing patience is important. I’ve solidified my methods in gaining the trust of my patients. I’ve learned how to explain things to my patients. I tell my patients, ‘This is something we’re going to figure out together.’”

As Wayde explained, the Hometown Tour is a series of events hosted by CHAP designed to give homeschool families an opportunity to connect with other homeschoolers while simultaneously providing encouragement for their homeschool journeys.

“This year’s speaker is Lauren Gideon, who is with Education Independence,” Wayde said. Education Independence is a network of advocates for education freedom that promotes parent-led, private-funded and state-independent education.

Gideon will speak on the topics of “The ‘Well Done’ of Homeschooling - Beginning With the End in Mind” and “Charting the Course: Education Independence - A Refuge for Generations to Come.”

Drawing on Jesus’ parable of entrusted treasure, the first session will encourage homeschool families to focus less on grades and more on faithfully stewarding hearts, priorities and purpose. The second session will help families clarify responsibility and freedom, define Education Independence and gain practical tools for confident decision-making and advocacy amid shifting education policies and cultural pressures.

“We will also be having a light meal together in between the ses-

With a history that dates to the 1980s, CHAP hosts an annual convention, lobbies for improving the homeschool law, provides speakers and other support to homeschool groups and offers a variety of homeschool resources.

The CHAP Hometown Tour will make five stops throughout Pennsylvania in Warren, Pittsburgh, State College, Scranton and Lancaster.

Along with the tour, CHAP hosts a YouTube channel of podcasts, located at www.youtube.com/@ chaphomeschoolpennsylvania 5953. Wayde is the host of the podcast, called “Chattin’ With CHAP.” The organization also has a page explaining the Pennsylvania homeschool law and offering support at https://homeschool pennsylvania.org.

Wayde hopes homeschooling families will consider attending the CHAP Hometown Tour.

“They can expect to be given a vision for homeschool, courage to continue this noble path and hope that the work they are doing now for their children will yield manifold benefits for their children in the future,” she said.

There is a charge to attend the CHAP Hometown Tour, and registration is required. To learn more, visit https://chaponline.com/ hometown-tour-2026.

March may not have the best weather for traditional yard sales, but if you’re itching to pick up a bargain, Ruhl’s Church has you covered. The church will host its annual indoor yard sale on Saturday, March 7, from 7 to 11 a.m. It will be held at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

“There will be over 30 different stand holders participating in the event, and there will be something for everyone,” said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. Items for sale will include collectibles, household items, antiques, toys, books and tools.

In addition to yard sale stands, there will be a food stand with a wide variety of items for sale, including egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn noodle soup, hot dogs, barbecue sandwiches, baked goods and assorted beverages.

“Back again this year will be a table of new and used Bibles and devotional books for all ages that will be offered at no charge,” Gray said. She noted that shoppers may also sign up to be added to the church’s email list to learn about upcoming events and to be entered to win a Weis gift card.

Proceeds from stand holder donations and the food stand help fund the missions and ministry activities of the Sunshine adult Sunday school class.

“This class organizes and distributes food boxes for local

families in need at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter; supports our church’s participation in Samaritan’s Purse shoeboxes at Christmas; as well as hosts a special banquet for our senior citizens,” Gray said. “The class also sends cards to shut-ins and supports four local ministries, an overseas missionary and mission trips sponsored by the church.”

This is the 26th year for the indoor yard sale.

“Even if you feel you do not need anything, come and enjoy the delicious food offered by our food stand and support some great ministries,” Gray remarked. “This winter has been particularly cold and snowy, so this is an excellent chance to get out and shake off that cabin fever.”

Ruhl’s Church holds worship services on Sundays at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday school for people of all ages is offered at 9:15 a.m. During Lent, Wednesday night suppers are held at 6 p.m., followed by a study series. These sessions will take place from Feb. 25 through March 25.

Purchase of items and food at the yard sale is by cash only. Free parking is available in a large lot on the church property, and the church is handicapped-accessible. Pets are prohibited in the building, as is smoking.

For more information on the event, call the church office at 717-665-3400. Stand registration is full for this year, but people may contact the church to reserve a stand for the 2027 sale.
