Come to a Christmas Party

When the members of Glossbrenner Church host their annual Community Christmas Party, they have a special mission in mind.

“This event is important to myself and our church family because we want the community to know that Glossbrenner exists to love and serve others,” said Jessica Rockey, children and youth director for the church. “What better way to do that than to provide an evening of fun festivities for not just families but anyone of any age who is looking for some fellowship?”

The Community Christmas Party will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13. The drop-in event will take place in the church’s fellowship hall, which is handicapped-accessible. Glossbrenner Church is located at 713 Church St., Mount Joy.

Christmas magic is coming to Mount Joy. On Saturday, Dec. 13, Santa will trade his sleigh for a fire truck as Fire Department Mount Joy escorts him through town before his annual stop at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road. Residents can follow the Mount Joy Area Chamber of

Commerce on Facebook and Instagram for route updates, and Santa is scheduled to arrive at 11 a.m. to greet children and pose for photos until 2 p.m.

We all know the real Santa is very busy this time of year, so Matthew Koch, team leader of Koch Garpstas Realty Group, will play the part for this event.

“I love stepping into the role of Santa each year because it gives me a chance to give back

Music Connects Community at Donegal Church

When Debra Ronning retired from her music faculty position at Elizabethtown College, she wanted to stay connected to music. A deacon at Donegal Presbyterian Church, Ronning also wanted to contribute to her congregation. So in 2021, she created Music at Donegal, a three-concert series of free performances that are open to the public.

“It has been a musical ministry outreach for the surrounding community,” Ronning said. “Having performed in many Lancaster area church concert series, it seemed like a logical outcome to start Music at Donegal. Our beautiful historical setting and lovely piano and organ were the perfect setting for performances.”

Music at Donegal is held at Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy.

Founded in 1721, Donegal Presbyterian Church shares an ancestral heritage with a church in Rathneeny, Ireland. The “witness tree” that once stood on the grounds was the spot where church members met in 1777, when George Washington sent a message asking for men to muster and travel to Philadelphia for the Revolutionary War effort. The tree had to be cut down in 1991 due to disease, but the congregation used its wood to make offering plates; bowls; bells; and more, including the organ case. While the guests vary annually,

Sweet Support for Mothers in Uganda

On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Elizabeth Room at The Marriage Hub, 18 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, will fill with the warmth of Christmas. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Milandila - a local nonprofit partnering with village communities in Uganda - will host its Christmas Fundraising Event, a celebration with a purpose that reaches across continents.

“Come and be encouraged!” said Shannon Medich, Milandila’s director of partnership development. “It’s a casual setting, free and a drop-in. It’s family-friendly, or you could come and not know anyone and still leave smiling. When you hear stories of lives being transformed by Christ, you will want to be part of what God is doing.”

The event will feature Christmas cookies and coffee, along with a lunch available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Each

lunch will feature a pulled pork or chicken sandwich, a side dish, chips and a beverage. Handcrafted Ugandan items will be for sale, and a holiday dessert auction, hosted by auctioneer Dave Conley of Rentzel’s Auctions in Mount Wolf, will begin at 1 p.m. Attendees may bid on more than 50 desserts to benefit the organization’s expansion efforts.

People from Community Bible Church in Marietta and Elizabethtown Alliance Church will provide the desserts.

“There are about 25 bakers offering one or two desserts each. Each one is a masterpiece!” Medich said. “(There will be) incredible layer cakes, black raspberry pie, cinnamon rolls, pecan pie, trays of assorted Christmas cookies, almond cake with chocolate ganache icing, carrot cake with cream cheese icing, a chocolate cake with raspberry fillingfrosted with chocolate icing, lemon cream cheese dump cake, whoopie pie cake, angel food cake and dozens and dozens more!”

All proceeds will directly benefit the event’s goal of raising $108,730 for a ministry expansion project and associated operating costs.

with them, so we thought it would be wonderful to have a time where everyone could hear an update on what God is doing in Uganda,” Medich said. “Because it was so close to Christmas, we thought of embracing the holiday season to offer handcrafted Christmas ornaments and

Nativity sets that they brought with them from Uganda. And we thought of the auction because what a fun way to raise money while providing something everyone needs - baked goods at Christmas!”

Milandila is now expanding its Family Center into

At 12:30 p.m., missionaries James and Morgan Tumwesiigye will share stories from Milandila Community Missions, the nonprofit they founded after moving to Uganda in 2021. The organization’s name, taken from the Baganda tribe, means “root, foundation or beginning.” It’s a fitting description for a ministry committed to building relationships and supporting vulnerable mothers.

Milandila’s Family Center serves pregnant and postpartum women in the Luwero District, providing medical care, prenatal and postnatal classes, lactation education, life-skills training and ongoing support. The program already serves more than 100 mothers, with five to 10 new women arriving each week.

This year’s event marks the second time Milandila is bringing its work to life through a festive Christmas gathering. The idea began last year when the Tumwesiigyes were returning to Pennsylvania for the holidays.

Two Train Displays Will Spark Holiday Wonder

“Trains and the holidays go together,” said John Monti, president of the Masonic Village & Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club. He invites people to embrace their inner child and visit not one, but two elaborate model train displays in town. One will be featured at the railroad club building on Freemason Drive on the Masonic Village campus, and the other will be showcased in the lower level of the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

To make it easy for people to visit both, a free shuttle service provided by Masonic Village will run between the two displays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 6, 13 and 20.

“Parking is at a premium at the library, so this is a great way for people to see both displays and not have to worry about parking,” Monti said, noting that the Masonic Village display is in a building with a large parking lot. “We love inviting people to both displays. We have people who go to the library’s display and don’t even know the Masonic trains exist, and vice versa.”

Both displays feature operational trains of various scales.

“We have seven different

layouts and various sizes, from standard gauge, which is the largest, to Z gauge, which is the smallest, and everything in between,” Monti shared.

Scenes change regularly, so even if people have visited the display in the past, they’re sure to see something new this year, he noted.

Members of the club will be on hand for the open houses, and they love to answer questions from visitors and highlight what the members have been working on.

The club also gives back to the community. Donations from visitors support Masonic Village projects, including programs at the children’s school on-site and funding for fraternal care for residents in need.

Additional donations help maintain the display and keep it running every year.

The partnership with The Train Guys at the Elizabethtown Library is a natural fit and benefits both groups, said Craig Coble, Train Guys coordinator.

“When people come to see our display, they can expect to see a toy train display that grew out of proportion from what people used to do in their homes,” he said. “We’re all just a bunch of old guys who never outgrew playing with our toys.”

Filling a large room on the lower level of library, The Train Guys’ display features a variety of gauges as well.

“When people come in the entryway, they’ll see a standard-gauge outfit,” Coble shared. “This is like stepping back in time about 100 years.”

Fifty push buttons are located throughout the display, giving visitors an opportunity to activate trains and accessories.

And like the Masonic Village club, members of The Train Guys will be on-site to answer questions.

“These displays are a chance for both of these groups to teach history,” Coble said. “We talk about how the toys were made over a 100-year period, manufacturing techniques and how they changed.”

And also like the Masonic Village club, The Train Guys give back through their

display, with suggested donations for admission benefitting the library.

Dine, Sing and Celebrate at Ruhl’s Church

Encouraging people to come to a Community Christmas Dinner at Ruhl’s Church, volunteer Kris Gray said the festivities will include great food and an opportunity to join in Christmas caroling after the meal.

“Bring your friends and family!” she said. “It is a delicious free meal and is open to all.”

The meal will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 6 p.m. at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.

The menu will feature baked ham, baked potatoes, green beans, rolls and dessert.

Ruhl’s Church began hosting the event 10 years ago.

“We wanted to include people who were not able to join us for Christmas Eve service, so in 2015, we started a free sit-down ham dinner,” Gray shared. “We continued hosting the event for several years until the pandemic hit and we changed to a drive-through event.”

The drive-through meal was very well received. It also included a “Drive to Bethlehem,” featuring scenes from the Christmas story. It continued in that fashion through 2023, but the church members realized they missed the connection they experienced with a sit-down meal.

“Last year, we decided to host a more personal dine-in event so we could enjoy some sweet fellowship with members of our community,” she explained. “Everyone who attended said they enjoyed the event because it gave them a chance to slow down and enjoy a great meal with friends.”

The event is much more than a meal for the church members, she said.

“Our congregation wants to extend hospitality to our community as we share the joy of the Christmas season,” Gray explained. “We want people to know the real meaning of Christmas and how it can bring lasting joy and hope in this troubled world.”

Along with the Christmas meal, Ruhl’s Church members invite the community to attend a Christmas Eve service. The candlelight service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 24.

Ruhl’s Church is handicapped-accessible, and parking is available in a large lot. Reservations are required to attend the Christmas dinner and must be made by Sunday, Dec. 7. To make a reservation, call 717-6654499 and leave a message if there is no answer.

one of Uganda’s only Women’s and Babies’ Hospitals, a project that will dramatically increase access to safe birth options and maternal education.

“We are a small nonprofit, and by God’s grace, we are making big impacts,” Medich said. “We believe that intentional building of relationships is one of the most effective ways to evangelize. When we take the time to know people - who they are, what they do, why they believe what they believe - we can share the Gospel in authentic and meaningful ways.”

Attendees at the Christmas event will be encouraged to support this expansion and Milandila’s frontline Gospel work. And for those who feel called to do more than give financially, Milandila also welcomes volunteer mission teams every February and June.

“If you have a heart to learn more or get involved, don’t hesitate to drop in,” Medich encouraged. “There is always room for one more in Great Commission work, and there is always an exciting way to be involved. God has gifted each one of us in different ways but called each of us to know Him and make Him known. Join us and figure out how you can best plug in.”

The event is free to attend, and no tickets or reservations are necessary. People with limited mobility and the elderly should reserve on-site parking. Ample parking will also be available at adjacent businesses as well as on-street parking in the blocks surrounding the location. To reserve parking or learn more about the organization, visit www.milandila .org or contact Medich at smedich@milandila.org or 717-514-4356.

Chuck Wagon Gang To Perform Concert

Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, will host a performance by The Chuck Wagon Gang on Friday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Women’s Group To Meet

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Dec. 9, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Paulette Teague will speak about “Transforming Trials Into Triumphs of Faith.” She will share the journey of how her family’s faith was tested and strengthened through the challenges of raising a child with a severe intellectual disability. She will highlight how God redeemed devastating circumstances into a testimony of His grace and goodness, leading to a life of purpose and a ministry, Jessica and Friends Community, that provides faith-based services for individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities.

Neighbors Sharing and Caring will take a break for Christmas and will resume meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Paulette and her husband, Peter, have both worked in different levels of the education field. They have co-authored a book sharing their journey with Jessica and God’s faithfulness, “Jessica’s Story - But God,” published in 2023. Paulette also ministered in various roles alongside her husband as he served as president of Lancaster Bible College for 21 years. The couple has four children and 10 grandchildren. During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

Parade Will Highlight Holiday Traditions

Get into the Christmas spirit at the Elizabethtown Holiday Parade presented by MARS Wrigley. The parade will take place on Saturday, Dec. 6. It will kick off at 4 p.m. from the corner of College Avenue and South Market Street. The route will run north along Market Street from College Avenue to Hummelstown Street.

Local organizations, businesses and churches will join the Elizabethtown middle and high school bands in the parade. Additional entries will include dance performance groups, local emergency services and unicyclers, as well as an appearance by Santa Claus.

With a theme of Holiday Traditions, the parade promises to bring a festive atmosphere, said Karrie Norman, GEARS program coordinator. GEARS has organized the parade since 2017.

“All of the groups entered in this year’s parade are excited to share their floats and bring guests a boost of holiday spirit,” Norman remarked. “You can expect to see someone you know or an organization/business that you have patronized

Party

from pg 1

Calling it a “community” party is intentional, Rockey noted, adding, “It is a celebration of the glorious season of the birth of Jesus that we can come together as a church family and welcome the community in!”

The party will provide a variety of fun activities.

“There are always a couple unique craft stations for all skill levels and ages,” Rockey shared. “They make a great decoration or a lovely gift for someone. Free food is a must, and you have to try our kitchen crew’s amazing barbecue. We also provide hot dogs and a cookie decorating station for dessert!”

Attendees can also enjoy hot chocolate and then pose for a free family photograph.

“We also provide festive frames for the photo we take, which can also make a great gift or an annual tradition,” Rockey said. “As of last year, we started providing a community Christmas gift table for those who are having trouble purchasing

among the 50-plus groups that will be participating!”

Along with having fun, parade entries are eligible to win a variety of prizes. Trophies will be awarded for groups in the following categories: Best Use of Theme, Best Holiday Spirit, Best Performance and Best Overall Appearance.

Returning judges will be Caroline Lalvani, director of public affairs at Elizabethtown College; Brett Thackara, meteorologist at ABC 27; and Damien Weaver, plant director at MARS Wrigley.

“The parade is presented by MARS Wrigley who also provides all of the candy that is given out during the parade,” Norman said.

The parade is just one of many community events GEARS hosts throughout the year. With a mission of connecting people of all ages through recreation,

learning, child care and senior center services that strengthen the community and the quality of life of residents, GEARS was founded in 1976 as Elizabethtown Area Recreation Commission. It was renamed GEARS (Greater Elizabethtown Area Recreation & Community Services) in 2000. GEARS was honored with the Elizabethtown Chamber’s NonProfit of the Year Award for 2025.

Hosting the parade is an annual highlight for GEARS staff, Norman said, adding, “It’s a joy to be part of this event that brings together the community and is something that will create core memories for all ages.”

The parade will be held rain or shine. For more information, visit www .getintogears.org or follow “GEARS” on Facebook.

gifts for their families this season. We also provide a wrapping and card station so everything can be complete!”

The event is designed to be a casual, fun evening, she said.

“We have plenty of tables set up to simply sit and socialize while listening to Christmas music in the background,” she explained. “It is just a happy atmosphere that is worth taking the time out of whatever might be going on in your life, and just enjoy the holiday moment.”

She invites anyone who is interested to come to the party.

“You can expect to meet a smiling face and have some delicious food and fun, all free,” she said. “We know times are tough and it is hard for people to enjoy an evening out, so we want to take that burden off the great people of our community and provide them a night of joyous memories.”

The Community Christmas Party also serves as a

way to bring new people into the church, Rockey commented.

“No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, you are always welcome here at Glossbrenner Church.

We are a church for all ages and backgrounds,” she said.

“No matter where you are at, Jesus wants to meet you where you are, and we want to meet you, too, any Sunday at 10 a.m., which is our worship time. We have Sunday school for all ages to follow immediately after the service, and we always have something in the service for the kids!”

Glossbrenner will hold Christmas Eve services on Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 3 and 7 p.m.

“Both services will have candle lighting, which is always a precious time to celebrate the reason for the season, which is Jesus,” Rockey said.

Masonic Village resident Jim Smith loves talking to visitors about trains. He’s also the vice president of the on-campus woodshop, and for the third year in a row, that site will be open during the same hours as the train display on four days in December.

“We will not be operating our machines, so that will allow guests to come in and get an up-close-and-personal view of our shop and our equipment,” Smith said of the woodshop that produces wood items for sale. “We can

custom build anything to fit a certain size or niche.”

The woodshop is located just up the road from the train building, and Smith hopes people will visit both sites to ask questions and learn.

“Not only is it fun for the youngsters to look at everything, but especially with the trains, we get to talk about railroad folklore and the history of railroads,” he said. “Some of us lived through what these kids only know about from books, and it’s great to share that history

DCA and Lions Club Set Food Drive

Members of the Dayspring Christian Academy (DCA) chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) will partner with the Mountville Lions Club for the fifth annual food drive to benefit the Columbia Food Bank. Local residents are encouraged to stop by the Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville, on Friday, Dec. 5, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. to help fill the donation truck with nonperishable goods. In the case of snow, the food drive will be held on Friday, Dec. 12. Members of Dayspring’s NHS chapter, as well as the Mountville Lions Club, will be on hand to help unload donations.

Donations that will be accepted include unexpired nonperishables, such as canned fruits, vegetables, soups, meats, peanut butter,

jelly, pasta sauce, and boxed cereal.

DCA students will collect food in their classrooms between Dec. 1 and 5. Classes that collect an average of four items per student will be eligible for a dress-down day later in the school year. The class with the highest average of donated items will receive a pizza party.

Last year, Dayspring’s NHS members collected more than 2,200 pounds of food for the Columbia Food Bank. The food bank’s mission is to help end food insecurity in Lancaster County. Since January 2010, the Columbia Food Bank has served more than 35,000 people, assisting over 17,000 households in areas such as Columbia, Mountville, West Hempfield Township, and Manor Township.

ENB Announces Letters to Santa Contest

Ephrata National Bank (ENB) has announced the three finalists for its fifth annual Letters to Santa Contest, an initiative created to support and celebrate the nonprofit organizations making a meaningful difference across the communities ENB serves.

Each year, Letters to Santa invites community members to nominate their favorite

501(c)(3) organizations by submitting a letter describing the impact the organization has on the lives of others. Entries include stories of hope, service, education and support, reflecting the many ways nonprofits strengthen Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties.

Our team will be there handing out cookies and hot chocolate, and we’ll have a fun giveaway for everyone who stops by. We can’t wait to celebrate the season with our community!”

The Friends of the Milanof-Schock Library will again offer free crafting activities for children and host a Christmas bake sale during Santa’s visit.

“We love being part of Santa’s visit,” said Joyce Summers, president of the Friends of the Library. “It’s wonderful to see the kids’ excitement, and it’s a great way for the community to learn about the Friends of the Library and how we raise funds to support the library.”

Each family will receive a free 5-by-7-inch photo with Santa, provided by Lanco Federal Credit Union.

“Every year, we are very excited to be involved with this opportunity and to be able to be a part of seeing the smiles on the children’s faces when they meet with Santa,” said Mollie Cic -

LBC Plans Christmas Concerts

Noel’s Café food truck will also be on-site for the festivities, offering coffee, tea and specialty drinks.

Michele Emenheiser, executive director of the Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce, invites the community to visit the library for this annual tradition.

“Last year, one of the volunteers shared that her cheeks hurt from smiling the whole event. Matthew is such a wonderful Santa, and seeing how excited the children are to visit with him definitely keeps you smiling,” she said.

Emenheiser expressed gratitude to the Milanof-Schock Library for hosting the event and noted that it is made possible through the support of Chamber members. She also encouraged the community to shop and support local businesses not only during the holiday season, but throughout the year.

the concert series sticks to a theme, Ronning said.

“The performers are mainly from the southcentral PA area,” she noted.

“We offer a Christmas concert, a classical/chamber concert and a Celtic-Scots/ Irish concert to celebrate our historical roots.”

TROPHY WALL TROPHY WALL

The series will kick off with a performance by Luke Harnish on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m.

“Luke will present a solo recital of varied Christmas repertoire,” Ronning commented. “He is a bass-baritone who is from the Lancaster area and is currently performing throughout the United States.”

Praised for his “luxuriant baritone” and “securely produced bass,” Lancaster native Harnish is quickly establishing himself as a versatile operatic and concert performer with companies including Sarasota Opera, Nashville Opera, The Atlanta Opera and Santa Fe Opera.

The second concert will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 3 p.m. It will feature “An American Tapestry” from tenor Christian

submissions, ENB’s internal judging committee evaluated entries based on story impact and the potential impact of a financial gift.

The first entry that has been selected as one of this year’s finalists is One Luv Outreach. Based in Reading, the nonprofit aims to bring “love and light” to the community through weekly family-friendly gatherings and weekly distributions of essentials, including food, clothing, toiletries and toys. The outreach is rooted in Christian faith and emphasizes sharing hope through the Gospel.

The second finalist is Milagro House. Located in Lancaster, Milagro House empowers women with children who are experiencing homelessness through a holistic, two-generational model. Its core programs include residential housing, education, life-skills training and intensive case management. Since education is central, Milagro House supports mothers working on their GED or pursuing postsecondary education to break the cycle of poverty.

Green Meadow Farm in

Seay and mezzosoprano Amy Yovanovich.

“They are both well known for their outstanding vocal artistry,” Ronning said.

The Celtic concert will take place on Sunday, April 19, at 3 p.m.

“The ever-popular Rizzetta’s Tones will perform in our fellowship hall,” Ronning shared. “Their instrumentation includes ‘fraternal twin’ dulcimers, high and low whistles and vocals.”

While all of the concerts are free to attend, a freewill offering will be received. For more information on the concert series, contact ChurchOffice@donegal pc.org.

Leola is the third finalist. The farm provides free, individualized mentoring and equine-assisted lessons to children and teens who have experienced trauma or emotional hardship. Through interaction with horses and farm life, the organization aims to bring healing, trust, responsibility and renewal, all grounded in Christian faith.

Community members are encouraged to visit the ENB Letters to Santa Contest Page at https://santa.epnb .com to read the finalists’ letters, view accompanying photos and cast their vote for the organization they believe deserves a special holiday gift. Public voting will remain open through Monday, Dec. 8, and the organization receiving the highest number of votes will be named the first prize winner. This year’s prizes are $15,000, first place; $5,000, second place; and $3,000, third place.

Winners will be notified on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and an official announcement will be shared on ENB’s social media channels by early January 2026.
