A Killer Ride on the Orient Express

All aboard for an evening of intrigue! Donegal Performing Arts will present Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 21 and 22, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23. A free preview for senior citizens age 65 and up will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. The shows will be held in the high school auditorium, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy.

Just after midnight, a snowstorm halts the famous Orient Express train in its tracks. By morning, one passenger is dead, an American tycoon found stabbed eight times behind a locked door. Trapped in the snow with a killer on board, the remaining passengers must depend on the brilliant detective Hercule Poirot to unravel the mystery before the murderer strikes again.

Banquet Will Spotlight Redemption

Come to the RAISE28 annual banquet, and you’ll hear a tale of redemption while helping to support an organization that provides youth services in Mount Joy.

RAISE28 will host the banquet on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

The case proves to be a challenge for the normally unflappable Poirot, shared Derek Palmeri, a senior who portrays the character.

“He’s solved many cases over the years, and he has always held himself up to a high standard. He knows he’s right in every way, except for when this case comes

his way,” Derek explained. “He gets stuck in a roadblock trying to solve it, which has never happened before.”

Like other characters in the play, Derek had to perfect an accent for his character.

“This is our main fundraiser for the year,” said Mark Unger, RAISE28 executive director. “We will be sharing about how we are impacting our community. Our theme is ‘Out of the Darkness - Into the Light.’ This year our keynote speaker is Nate Deen, whose life story is told in the movie ‘Brave the Dark.’” As Unger explained, Nate grew up in Lancaster County and experienced severe trauma as a child.

“As a result, he hung out with the wrong crowd and pushed people away,” Unger shared. “A teacher, Stan Deen, at Garden Spot High School took him in and eventually adopted him. Nate will be speaking about who he was as a teen and how God has transformed his life.”

While Thanksgiving is a time of joy for many people, the holiday is harder for others. They may find themselves alone without friends or family to celebrate with. That’s where St. John’s Episcopal Church comes in.

The church, located at 239 E. Market St., Marietta, will host a free Thanksgiving Day dinner on Thursday, Nov. 27, following its 10 a.m. service.

“We plan to start serving at 11:30 a.m., and people should try to attend at that time,” said Nancy Kulman,

The evening will also feature a plated dinner catered by Simply from Scratch with a menu of Caesar salad, rolls, chicken bruschetta, green beans, buttered noodles, desserts and beverages. Along with dinner and Nate’s speech, the banquet will include a time of worship, led by Victory Express.

“This fundraiser will inspire you through hearing and seeing the impact of how God is using

Holiday Market Will Blend Shopping and Support

Come to the Holiday Market on Adele, and you can find something for everyone on your gift list. The vendor show will take place on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manheim Community Farm Show exhibition hall, 502 E. Adele Ave., Manheim.

“We have over 25 vendors that will be ready to help you get your holiday shopping started,” said Chelsey Harnly, who organizes the show with Stephanie Rogers.

RAISE28

Items for sale will include sourdough bread and other baked goods, local authored books, local farm-raised meat, Mary Kay products, clay earrings, cocoa bombs, wooden toys, crocheted items, Tupperware, modeling compound kits, home décor, baby clothes, glass tumblers and more.

Food and beverages will also be available for purchase.

“We have DLT Farms selling food and Shine Your Light Coffee Co. as our coffee vendor,” Harnly stated.

RAISE28 in our community,” Unger said, encouraging people to come to the banquet. “Nate Deen’s life story is a powerful reminder how God uses everyday people to help change people’s lives. In addition, the worship time will be special, and the food will be wonderful!”

Proceeds from the banquet will be used to support after-school programming and free meals for students at RAISE28. Located at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, the organization provides academic assistance, recreational activities, Bible lessons, martial arts, music and more for students in grades one through 12.

“Our mission is to reach local youth with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ,” Unger said. He noted that while it is free to attend the banquet, he hopes people will give

generously toward the mission of RAISE28.

“This is a fundraising event and a time to come to support our ministry,” he said. “While there is no fee charged to attend, there will be an opportunity at the end for people to financially give a gift to support our ministry.”

To register for the banquet, visit https://raise28 .org. and click on “Events.”

The reservation deadline is Wednesday, Nov. 12.

“The food and coffee stands will be benefiting Moms Connect.”

As she explained, Moms Connect is a ministry embracing mothers of children with physical and intellectual disabilities in Christlike love.

“Their vision is to bring each mom into deeper community though establishing connections and inviting moments of encouragement and rest, while embracing and celebrating the challenges and joys of the journey,” Harnly said, adding that the organization serves people throughout Lancaster County and the surrounding area.

Choosing the charity to support was an easy decision for Harnly and Rogers.

“Stephanie and I are both moms ourselves, so we know how hard it can be to find community and support in a normal motherhood journey,” Harnly remarked. “But these mommas have unique

challenges, so we want to help support them in any way we can.”

She hopes people will stop by the Holiday Market on Adele for shopping, a bite to eat and an opportunity to give back to women in need.

“Come support local families and help keep the local economy going,” she said. “Every year is so fun. You get to see businesses you might not normally get to see or support. The food is always great too!”

The building where the market will be held is handicapped-accessible, and there are restrooms available. While some vendors will accept cash only, others may take electronic payments, so shoppers should be prepared for either payment option.

For more information, search for “2025 Holiday Market on Adele” on Facebook. For more information on Moms Connect, visit www.moms connectmin.com.

You’ve worked hard all your life, it’s time to enjoy your retirement Use your home’s equity to help with monthly expenses

If you are like a lot of homeowners, you’ve got equity in your home but aren’t sure how you could use it to boost your retirement. Well, there’s something called a reverse mortgage, and it allows qualified borrowers aged 62 and older to pull cash from their home WITHOUT having to worry about a monthly principal and interest mortgage payment.

Scouts Make Waves in Safety Course

When retired teacher Dave Eichler helped Glossbrenner Church in Mount Joy secure a Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission grant for canoes, a trailer and life jackets, he had a bigger vision than just getting church youths on the water. He wanted to use those resources to teach safe boating to the wider community.

This information is not intended to be an indication of loan qualification, loans are subject to credit and property approval. Borrower must meet all loan obligations, including living in the property as the principal residence and paying property charges. Borrowers are responsible for paying property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, maintenance and related taxes (which may be substantial). Failure to pay these amounts may subject the property to a tax lien or other encumbrance or to possible foreclosure. Terms and availability of programs are subject to change without notice. Age requirements apply, check with your mortgage professional. A reverse mortgage does not require monthly repayment of principle and interest, and increases the principle loan amount. Interest is charged on the outstanding balance, which may result in negative equity. When the loan is due and payable, some or all of the equity in the property no longer belongs to the borrowers, who may need to sell the home or otherwise repay the loan with interest from other proceeds. The loan becomes due and payable when the last borrower, or eligible non-borrowing surviving spouse, dies, sells the house, no longer occupies the property as a primary residence, defaults on taxes, insurance payments, or maintenance, or does not otherwise comply with the loan terms. loanDepot.com, LLC. Since August 2024, three local Scouting America troops - from Maytown, Hershey and Elizabethtown - have taken part in Eichler’s hands-on boat safety certification program. Each troop earned both state certification and merit badges after completing his course.

The fish and boat commission’s Boating and Water Safety Awareness (BWSA) course guides people to be knowledgeable in safe boat operation, the laws and regulations, equipment and in-water participation. The in-water portion involves floating in a life jacket and conserving body heat, using throw bags and ropes, performing safe swamping and canoe-over-canoe rescues and learning paddle strokes.

“Participants must pass a written test and perform the in-water skills to receive

certification,” Eichler said. He runs his BWSA course at Speedwell Forge Lake in Elm.

In mid-September, Elizabethtown Scouting America Troop 51 took to the water with Eichler. Scoutmaster Brandon Adams remarked that although he has boated before, the course provided a new way of looking at safety.

“(It) helped me understand more boating rightof-way and the various buoy markings and meanings,” Adams shared.

also a member of the troop, explained his favorite part of the day.

“It was pretty cool doing the boat-over-boat stuff,” he said. “You never know when you might have to use it.”

Elizabeth Whitney, committee chair for Troop 51, thanked Eichler for his class, adding, “We appreciate all the knowledge he shared with the troop.”

Each of the Scouts went home with new knowledge from the experience. Scout Jackson Nash learned that it’s important to have distress signals on board your boat.

Maintaining constant awareness of your surroundings is also important, said troop member Jack Deardorf.

“Knowing about the exclusion zones around military and cruise liner ships is important,” he commented.

Scout Kolton Adams shared a bit of trivia he learned during the program, noting, “A person needs to be at least 12 years old to operate a jet ski and have a boat safety card, too!”

And Alexander Whitney,

Instructing the Scouts comes naturally for Eichler, who spent 35 years teaching health, physical and outdoor education at Donegal High School. When he retired in 2020, he wanted to keep instructing people in outdoor activities, and he applied for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission grant. He hopes program participants leave with knowledge that will keep them safe while also having fun on the water.

“If your Scout troop, church youth group or interested group of adventure-seeking folks want to also experience what I can offer, I can be reached at Glossbrenner Church,” Eichler said, adding that he’s already booking dates in the new year. “To schedule for 2026, call the church at 717-653-5683.”

This is the first time the church is hosting this event, but the congregation hopes to make it an annual event, she said.

“We felt called to offer a meal to those who do not have family or friends to have a meal together for this holiday,” Kulman noted, adding, “But everyone is invited to join us for a community meal. Members of the congregation plan to attend also.”

She emphasized that people do not need to attend the church service to share the meal.

St. John’s Episcopal Church operates with the motto “The small church

with a big heart.” Services are led by the Rev. Martha Ambrose, rector. Worship services are held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school for children of all ages begins at 10:15 a.m.

Midweek Eucharist is held on Tuesdays at noon. Morning Prayer takes place at 10 a.m. on Thursdays in the parish hall. Bible Study Formation is held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays following the Morning Prayer, also in the parish hall.

Reservations are not required for the Thanksgiving dinner, but they are encouraged so organizers can prepare enough food. To make a reservation, call the church at 717-4263189 and leave a message with your name, phone number and the number of people attending.

“He’s Belgian,” Derek explained of Poirot. “I’ve been practicing by watching the movies of this story over and over again and watching YouTube videos.” He also picked up accent tips from his teacher’s husband, who is Belgian. Other students had to learn to perfect accents including Russian, Swedish and Hungarian.

Joining Poirot on the train is a cast of characters full of personality. Junior Liliana Ware plays Princess Dragomiroff. Like many of her castmates, she is an understudy and will perform in the Saturday show.

“We’re calling the principal cast the ‘overstudies,’ and they’ll perform on the 21st and 23rd,” she explained. “It’s been really fun being a part of this show because there are flashbacks at the end when you find out who

Historical Society Sets Meeting

The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 17, at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy. The guest speaker will be Nancy Groff, who will present “Watt & Shand: East, West, Home’s the Best.”

The program, “Watt & Shand: East, West, Home’s the Best” will emphasize Peter Watt’s life and will mirror Nancy’s book by exploring the history of the store, which was established in 1878.

Nancy is a great-granddaughter of Peter Watt, one of Watt & Shand’s founders.

commits the murder, and both casts get to be on stage as body doubles in the flashbacks.”

Liliana portrays a Russian princess who has been exiled.

“She’s very outspoken about what she wants and about other people,” Liliana shared. “She name-calls in the show. She’s very stern and very strongwilled. It’s a fun character to play.”

Senior Samantha Alampi portrays Greta Ohlsson in Saturday’s performance and plays the role of Nanny as well as serving as a member of the ensemble in the other performances.

“It’s a very serious show, with themes of ‘What is justice?’” she said. “My character is very hysterical, and she cries a lot. Most of my lines are delivered while I’m crying, so it’s been a fun challenge to learn how to act

while crying.”

Describing her character, outspoken American Helen Hubbard, freshman Julia Slobozien said, “She’s a loud person who definitely wants to make her presence known to people, but toward the end of the play, you see more of the cool side of her.”

Julia will portray Helen in the Friday and Sunday performances, and she said audiences are in for a wild ride with the show.

“It’s a serious show, but it’s also so fun to watch,” she said. “Mysteries are really fun, and it’s cool to see the plot develop and how everybody plays a role in the storyline. This is a show that leaves you thinking about it even after the show has ended.”

Samantha agreed, adding, “There’s drama. There’s a slight love story. There are funny bits. It’s a little hodgepodge of everything. It’s also cool that with

two casts, you can come see the show twice and get a different experience based on the cast members’ acting choices and different people on stage.”

Liliana invites anyone up for a bit of adventure to check out the show.

“If you like murder-mysteries, feeling suspense and being on the edge of your seat, this is a great show for you,” she said.

Derek cautioned that audiences should be prepared for a wild ride aboard the Orient Express.

“This show is full of action after action. It’s fast-moving,” he said. “There are so many different things going on all the time; it keeps you on your toes. You are just locked in on the action on the whole time.”

Tickets for “Murder on the Orient Express” are available at www.dpa .donegalsd.org and will be sold at the door.

A graduate of Manheim Township High School, Nancy now resides in southern Lancaster County. Nancy worked as a registered nurse before creating the Nursing Education Resource Group. In addition to nursing, she is a professional seamstress. Nancy is a volunteer with several organizations, including the Friendship Community; the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County; and James Buchanan’s Wheatland, where she serves as a tour guide. Her book will be for sale at the meeting. Refreshments and tours of the museum will be available following the program. The meeting is free and open to the public, and donations will be accepted.

The historical society’s building is open every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Members of the public may stop by to see the displays of Mount Joy memorabilia. For more information about the historical society, visit www.mountjoy history.com.

Dayspring To Present

“Thanksgiving Exposed”

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present “Thanksgiving Exposed: The True Story of the Pilgrims” on Friday, Nov. 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the school. Guests will select a specific time slot for a living history walk-through tour that will take about one hour.

This live re-enactment of the true story of the Pilgrims is based on primary sources, including the original manuscript recorded by William Bradford, governor of the Plymouth settlement. Thanksgiving Exposed takes guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ being the focal point for all of history. The story traces the Gospel from Jesus to the Apostle Paul and onward. Guests briefly learn about the impact of historical figures and events like King John and the signing of the Magna Carta, John Wycliffe translating the Bible into English, and Martin Luther and his 95 Theses. The tour moves on to the Reformation and Elizabeth I and James I, when persecution began for reformers in England, setting the stage for the rise of the Separatists.

Guests then move through six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England. The stations tell

the Pilgrim story from the Pilgrims’ beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland and their voyage to the New World.

“Thanksgiving Exposed” enables guests to witness how the seeds of Christian self-government were planted and later gave rise to the United States of America.

The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required by visiting www .dayspringchristian.com. Many of the earlier time slots are full, but a waitlist is available for those who do not receive their desired time slot. For more information, call the school at 717-285-2000.

The featured book will be “Cows Can Moo! Can You? All About Farms,” part of The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library series. The book takes students on a tour of

a farm while introducing them to the people, animals, and science behind agriculture. Ag Literacy Week connects volunteers from the agricultural community with classrooms across the state. Volunteers read the featured book, share their experiences, and help students understand how agriculture impacts their daily lives.

and Angela Goss lead guests to a secret church service as part of the 2024 Thanksgiving Exposed event at Dayspring.
