Festive Family Fun Will Shine at Kraybill

Get into the holiday spirit with fun for the whole family at the seventh annual Christmas at Kraybill Craft Fair and Celebration. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy.

“The craft fair is a festive and fun community event that helps support local artisans and crafters along with raising funds for special programs at Kraybill,” said Trish Hopper, Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) volunteer and Christmas event coordinator. “This event features local artisans, crafters and vendors selling handmade items such as jewelry, quilts, ornaments and home décor, along with local

honey, children’s toys and books.”

New this year, a student maker’s market will feature Kraybill students and their handmade goods.

“Kraybill will have a baked goods stand featuring home-baked items and our special gingerbread cookie decorating kits complete with a

bakery-made 6-inch gingerbread man cookie, icing and a variety of sprinkles and candy decorations,” Hopper explained. “These kits are a favorite item every year, and both individual cookie kits and family packs of four cookies will be available.”

Connecting Veterans to Vital Resources

For many veterans, navigating the world of benefits and services can feel overwhelming. From health care and counseling to education, employment and burial benefits, the resources available are numerous, but figuring out where to begin can be a challenge. That’s where members of the American Legion Post 185 in Mount Joy hope to make a difference.

To help veterans and their families access the benefits they’ve earned, Post 185 will host a Veteran Benefit Information Session on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy.

Treasures, Treats and Togetherness

Whether you’re looking for delicious homemade food, bargains on gently used merchandise or an opportunity to pick up handcrafted items, you’ll find it all at the Glossbrenner Church Country Fair and Market. The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the church, located at 713 Church St., Mount Joy.

On Friday, dinners featuring homemade handrolled chicken potpie will be available for eat-in or takeout from 5 to 7 p.m. or until sold out. Each dinner will include chicken potpie, coleslaw, apple sauce, a roll and butter and a drink.

On Saturday, homemade chicken corn soup, hamburger barbecue, hot dogs, chips, water and soda will be for sale from 9 a.m. to noon. Free hot dogs will be available for children.

Saturday’s festivities will also include a yard sale, featuring a variety of items donated by church members or their friends and family. “You will find a variety of sizes of clothing, books, toys, household items and much, much more,” said Marcia Brooks, who is helping to organize the event. “All items are available by donation. You might just find something you can’t live without.”

Saturday will also feature homemade baked goods prepared by church members.

“Who doesn’t love sweets?” asked church member Sue Kopp. “Cookies, pies, cakes, fudge and other sugary treats will be available by the piece or as a whole. The sale includes regular and sugar-free apple dumplings from

A craft fair will also be a part of the fun on Saturday. It will feature handcrafted items made by members and attendees of the church.

“Work is done all year to create a variety of desirable items,” Brooks said. “There will be a host of Christmas décor and household items that include scrubbies, dish towels, dish cloths and jar openers. There are wreaths, jewelry, crocheted stuffed animals, hand-stitched items and paintings by a local artist and much more. All can be purchased at reasonable price.”

The Country Fair and Market is coordinated by the Caring Hands and

Hearts committee of Glossbrenner Church.

“This is a mission-oriented group dedicated to support needs within the church, community and other parts of the world,” explained member Bonnie Engle, adding that the event brings the community together. “In addition to raising funds for missions, it is a time to connect with the community and to meet new families. It is a time of fun and fellowship.”

A portion of the proceeds from the event will be used to support RAISE28 and Mount Joy Helping Services.

The committee members invite the wider community to come to the Country Fair and Market.

“When you enter the doors of the church, you will find friendly faces, great food, desserts to tantalize your sweet tooth, Christmas gifts you can purchase for your family and friends and possibly something for yourself,” said committee member Emmajane Davis.

Glossbrenner Church holds worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m., followed by Sunday school for people of all ages at 11:15 a.m. Prior to the service, the FROG (Fully Rely on God) Café is open for snacks and coffee.

A free community Christmas party is planned for Saturday, Dec. 13, from 5. to 7 p.m.

Women’s Group To Meet

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

Julie Henning will share “A Rose in a Ditch.” From the streets of Busan, South Korea, to a house with a white picket fence in Souderton, Henning will share her journey from her Amerasian roots to life with the famous author Pearl S. Buck and becoming part of the family of God.

Henning was born in South Korea. Her father was an American G.I. whom she never knew, and her

mother was Korean and raised her alone until she died. Henning was 13 when she became an orphan. She was brought to America by author Pearl S. Buck and adopted by a family in Pennsylvania. Being Amerasian, she became a spokesperson on behalf of her people and their plight. Henning is now a speaker and author who recognizes God’s grace and sovereignty throughout her life.

During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.

With some of the handcrafted items that will be for sale at the Country Fair and Market are (from left) Marcia Brooks, Sue Kopp, Bonnie Engle and Emmajane Davis.

GEARS will offer activities to the community. To register or for more information, visit www .getintogears.org or call 717-367-0355.

GEARS will hold the annual Elizabethtown Holiday Parade in conjunction with Mars Wrigley on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 4 p.m. The parade will travel along Market Street, and this year’s theme is “Holiday Traditions.” Parade applications are due by Friday, Nov. 14, and can be found at www.getinto gears.org/holiday-parade.

Registration for GEARS’ winter and spring 2026 programming will open on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 8 a.m. People may register online, by phone, or in person at 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown.

tain younger guests. Friendly competition will also be part of the festivities.

“We will also be holding our fourth annual chili and brisket cook-off,” Hopper said, noting that the cook-off idea came from several parents at the school. “Gene Wenger’s Meats & Fine Foods of Elizabethtown donates over 100 pounds of brisket that is then cooked by the competitors. This competition is for home chefs and is very popular. Prizes are awarded to the first-place winners of the cook-off for best chili and best brisket.”

The deadline for contestants to enter is Friday, Nov. 14. Tastings will be open to the public starting at 11 a.m. on Nov. 22 and will be offered until sold out. Voting will end at 12:30 p.m. so that winners can be announced at 1 p.m. at the event.

Along with offering fun for Kraybill families and the wider community, the celebration raises money for school programs.

“This is the main fundraiser for Kraybill’s PTF committee, which supports

special educational and extracurricular events at the school, including roller skating nights for students, family picnics and special acts of appreciation for our teachers and staffs,” Hopper said. “A highlight of the PTF’s programs includes the addition of an after-school chess club and drama club.

The PTF also recently handcrafted a new reading tree in the school library, which provides seating and highlights new books for students.”

Kraybill’s concession stand is a special fundraiser that supports a seventh- and eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C. Items available at the stand will include pulled pork and macaroni and cheese from Alpha Bravo Catering, as well as chicken corn soup from Gene Wenger’s Meats & Fine Foods, along with other food, snacks and drinks. Noel’s Café food truck will sell specialty coffees and other beverages.

Christmas at Kraybill provides the school with a way to interact with the community, Hopper said.

Scouts To Collect Food Donations

The Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts of Mount Joy are collecting food for those in need. On Nov. 1, the Scouts placed door hangers on the doors of homes in the community. On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Scouts will return to collect any food people wish to donate.

Second Grace

Go shopping on Thursday, Nov. 6, and you can pick up a new outfit while supporting local young mothers.

WhirliGig Unique Boutiques will host a fashion show to benefit Second Grace, a nonprofit that provides mentorship and resources to single moms. The fashion show will take place at the boutique, 206 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, beginning with a happy hour at 5 p.m., followed by the show and shopping at 6 p.m.

“The idea for this fashion show was born out of a desire to celebrate both local creativity and community,” said Callie Tomblin, program coordinator for Second Grace. “We wanted to create a space where fashion meets purpose, highlighting unique pieces while supporting local designers, businesses and causes. It’s also a fun and engaging way to bring people together for an evening of style, connection and giving back.”

Many of the items in the show will come from WhirliGig Unique Boutiques, a locally owned store known for mission-driven fashion, Tomblin said, noting that the clothes featured

will include items from independent designers and local small retailers.

“Our models are all community members, people from different walks of life who are passionate about supporting local talent and being part of something uplifting,” she shared. “Most of the items featured in the show will be available for purchase right after the event. We’ll have pop-up shopping areas set up so guests can browse and buy what they loved on the runway.”

She emphasized that while the fashion show is geared toward adults and teens, children are welcome to attend the family-friendly event.

“Whether you love fashion or just want a great night out supporting local makers, you’ll leave inspired,” Tomblin remarked. “Plus, there’s nothing better than seeing real people model real, wearable looks!”

Along with the runway show, guests can enjoy light refreshments and snacks from local food vendors, as well as a short talk about the mission of Second Grace and how the community can get involved.

Second Grace began in 2021 in Mount Joy when founder Candace Abel

sought to serve young single mothers - “Graces” - with trained advocates called “Sages.” The nonprofit now operates out of Community Place on Washington, 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. It serves women throughout Lancaster County. Each Sage helps a Grace navigate life, whether that’s providing transportation to appointments or getting a Grace connected to community services like food banks or GED classes. Sages might also just spend time with their Grace in a positive way, socializing and offering connection.

With the mission of Second Grace in mind, Tomblin encourages people to come to the fashion show.

“This show is about more than fashion,” she said. “It’s about dignity, empowerment and the power of local love. Every ticket and purchase helps support Second Grace, a local nonprofit organization committed to supporting at-risk mothers in our community through mentorship, essential resources and compassionate care.”

To purchase tickets for the fashion show, email WhirliGig.etown@gmail. com. To learn more about Second Grace, visit https:// secondgrace.org.

“The purpose is to connect the veterans and their family members directly to the organizations and key points of contact that can assist them across a variety of resources,” explained Stacey Miller, service officer for the American Legion. Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation with the right person to open doors to the help they need, she said. While the event will take place in Mount Joy, it is open to veterans from all parts of Lancaster County. The Legion has invited a wide range of agencies and partners to be part of the event. Representatives from the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and VFW state headquarters will be available to answer questions about VA hospital

benefits and the process for applying. Veterans will also be able to learn about burial benefits, with representatives from Sheetz Funeral Home and Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery on hand to provide guidance and information.

Recognizing that wellness extends beyond physical health, the Lancaster Vet Center will share resources focused on mental health and counseling services.

The Building Bridges Foundation, known for its equine-assisted therapy programs, will also participate, offering information about how working with horses can support emotional healing and recovery for veterans.

The evening will begin in the church sanctuary with a short presentation out -

lining the various veteran benefits and how to access them. Afterward, attendees will have time to visit information tables in the fellowship hall, enjoy light refreshments and connect with representatives one on one.

“(There will be time) for everyone to network with other veterans, ask questions and gain the resources they seek,” Miller said, noting that organizers want to make it easier for all veterans to find the help they deserve.

To assist with planning, veterans and family members are encouraged, but not required, to register on the American Legion’s event page at http://bit .ly/4nqcMFG.

Questions may be directed to Miller at ALPost185SO@gmail.com.

Lancaster Longhouse Tours Scheduled

The 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, will host tours of the Lancaster Longhouse in honor of Native American Heritage Month on Saturday, Nov. 8, with tour slots available at 10 and 11:30 a.m.

Jess McPherson, local artist and cultural educator, will lead the tours. McPherson is a representative of Circle Legacy Center (CLC), a nonprofit dedicated to empowering local Native Americans through education and community representation, honoring both enduring traditions of the past and today’s contemporary cultures.

Mennonite Life has worked in partnership with CLC since 2007.

In addition to touring the longhouse, guests are invited to see a new exhibit, “What Lies Beneath,” in the museum store. “What Lies Beneath” features archaeological artifacts unearthed on the 1719 Museum property, exploring what they reveal about the people who lived there and the continued relationship with the land. The museum store will also feature books and crafts highlighting Indigenous life, history, and culture.

Mennonite Life’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other’s stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.

This year’s tours will explore Indigenous history and culture, particularly the Susquehannock-Conestoga people in the area now known as Lancaster and York counties. The tours are geared toward older youths and adults, and there is an admission fee. To purchase tickets, visit www.menno nitelife.org/events.
