Country Fair and Market will feature food and fun BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The Country Fair and Market at Glossbrenner United Methodist Church features food and bargains, but it serves another purpose as well. “It’s about community outreach,” said Sue Kopp, a member of the Caring Hands and Hearts committee at the church. “It’s a way to connect

with other people.” The church, located at 713 Church St., Mount Joy, will hold i t s Country Fair and Market from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4. On Friday, from 4 p.m. until sold out, a chicken potpie dinner will be available for eat-in or takeout. It will include chicken potpie, See Fair pg 3

Honoring a musical mentor BY CATHY MOLITORIS

n 1966, Glen Leib began teaching in the Donegal School District. For the next 33 years, he influenced countless students with his enthusiasm and passion for music. He directed the concert band and marching band, taking his students on performance trips in Mexico City, Quebec, Nashville, Orlando and the Gimbels Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. He was also heavily involved with the Donegal Alumni Band. When Glen passed away in July at the age of 81, a former student and friend decided to honor the man who had made a difference in the lives of so many. Tom Miller, who is a member of the Donegal Alumni Band, helped to form a scholarship committee in Glen’s name. He also worked to raise money for a bench that was dedicated in

“He was a leader. Many people characterized him as a legend and a friend.” Band, he stayed in touch with his musical mentor and the two became good friends. Miller noted that Glen envisioned the Donegal Alumni Band becoming a large presence in the community. “It was his dream to have 100-plus people in the Mount Joy Memorial

Day parade,” Miller said. “We’re hoping to make that happen next year.” Miller, who is on a benefit committee with another local organization, said he got the idea for the bench after reading an article in a motorcycle magazine. “It was about benches that could be created in people’s memory,” he recalled. “I found out who makes them, and I thought this would be something we could do to honor Mr. Leib.” He began collecting donations from friends, family and other community members, and he gathered some of Glen’s family together for the bench presentation. He hopes to have the bench installed on school property in the Donegal School District once he has district approval. “We also have plans to start a scholarship in his name,” Miller noted, adding that Glen would See Mentor pg 2

Bringing outdoor adventures to everyone BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“I like to see the change in individuals,” said Dave Eichler, describing the outdoor adventures he leads. “That’s why I do what I do.” Eichler recently took a group of six people rappelling at Chickies Rock County Park, where they descended a 50-foot rock face. To prepare for their adventure, the participants received instruction in mid-September from Eichler on how to use the climbing harness

and helmet and how to tie specific knots, and then the group met the following week to try a 15-foot rappel before tackling the 50-foot rappel. Eichler noted he was proud of each person, who faced his or her fears and successfully completed the experience. Eichler retired in 2020 after teaching for 35 years. At Donegal High School, he created the Donegal Experiential Education Program (DEEP) in 1991, offering outdoor experiences such as rock See Outdoor pg 6

Outside of his position as a music teacher, he was a member of the Elizabethtown Lions Club, AsharaCasiphia Lodge 551 and Elizabethtown’s Encore Band at Masonic Villages, among other organizations. He was also a life member of the Hershey Region Antique Automobile Club of America and the Pennsylvania State Education Association. items by members of the congregation and friends of the church,” said committee member Kathy Binkley. The crafters get together regularly throughout the year to make items to sell. “We try to vary what we offer every year,” explained committee member Linda Gockley, who noted that the church has been holding the bazaar for decades. This year’s crafts will include dryer balls, wreaths, gnomes, T-shirts, key fobs, baby blankets, scrubbies and dishcloths. Proceeds from the event will benefit projects at the church as well as community organizations, including Rainbow’s End Youth Services and Align Life Ministries. “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” Brooks noted. It’s always well attended, said Kopp, who added, “People are lined up outside before the doors open. The friendship, fellowship and food we have is all wonderful.” Glossbrenner United Methodist Church holds worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m., followed by Sunday school for people of all ages at 11:15 a.m. Prior to the service, the FROG Café is open for snacks and coffee.

climbing, backpacking, orienteering and paddling. He first caught the adventure bug while studying health and physical education at West Chester University. “During spring break, when a lot of kids go to Florida, I went with West Chester on an Outward Bound backpacking course,” he recalled. “I felt so alive doing it. I thought, ‘How can I spread this possibility to high school students?’” During his tenure as a physical education teacher at Donegal, Eichler took hundreds of students on outdoor adventures. He has also served as an instructor at Outward Bound in North Carolina for 31 years, and when he retired from Donegal, he didn’t want to give up his love for helping others discover excitement in the outdoors. He was able to bring some of his equipment from Donegal to Glossbrenner United Methodist Church in Mount Joy, where he approached the church about offering a rappelling experience to members. “DEEP stopped when I retired, but this way, I can continue doing what I love,” Eichler said, noting that his adventures are open to anyone, not just members of the church. At the end of each program, Eichler incorporates time for reflection from participants. “I want them to draw meaning from the experience,” he said. The group who rappelled at Chickies Rock said it was a oncein-a-lifetime adventure. “I am so glad I didn’t allow my fears to overcome me, and I would have missed out on this priceless experience,” said Penny Whitcraft. “I can relate this day with my Christian walk. Taking that first step off the edge of the rock was very difficult. I had to trust in our leader, Dr. Dave, that he had all the safety measures in place.” Eichler said safety is his No. 1 priority, and he emphasized that with proper supervision and

Silent auction to benefit Hope Within Hope Within Community Health, Counseling, and Dental Center will hold a virtual silent auction of authenticated, signed sports memorabilia during the month of November. Due to a donor, the auction will offer a range of items, including Penn State and Steelers football signed items as well as baseballs signed by legends like Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver. Among the premier items up for auction are a framed No. 11 Penn State jersey signed by both Micah Parsons and Abdul Carter and a photo of what is known as “The Immaculate Reception” signed by Franco Harris, formerly of the Steelers. These items were donated by Terry L. Davis. The items will be available for viewing at Hope Within’s Holiday Shop and Open House on Friday, Nov.

3, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon at 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown. A full list of the items is available at www.hopewithin.org/events, and photos of the items are available at www.facebook.com/HopeWithin Ministries/events. Bids should be submitted by email to connect@hopewithin.org. The highest bidder for each item will be notified after the close of bidding on Thursday, Nov. 30. Hope Within is located in Londonderry Township, between Middletown and Elizabethtown Borough, and serves residents of Dauphin, Lancaster, and Lebanon counties who are medically uninsured and financially eligible. For medical care, financial eligibility is capped at 250% of the federal poverty level. Many common prescription medica-

tions are also provided free of charge. Donation-based oral health screenings, education, cleanings, sealings, fillings, and extractions are also available to those under Hope Within’s primary medical care program. Counseling is offered on a selfpay, income-based negotiated fee, and there are no other eligibility requirements. Hope Within’s typical patients are people who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid but who cannot afford health care from the marketplace. These are often people with one or more part-time jobs, like delivery drivers, day care workers and wait staff. In addition, Hope Within has been a temporary medical home for refugees escaping war-torn homes and has served about 600 Ukrainians in the past year, among others.

A framed No. 11 Penn State jersey signed by Micah Parsons and Abdul Carter is among the items up for bids in Hope Within’s virtual silent auction.
