igh school is hard enough without the added pressure of homelessness. Donegal School District is hoping to relieve some of that pressure by launching the Champions for Teens Program. The program will match each homeless student at Donegal High School with a “champion, or advocate in the community, who will help support the student in a variety of ways. “We have had a mentor program for years, but because homeless students are a particularly vulnerable population, we wanted something specifically for them, said Christina Helfrick, school social worker for secondary students. Helfrick will host a Zoom information session about the program on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 7 to 7:30 p.m. “The Zoom session will be an opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about the program, she said. “It’s not a commitment. It’s just to learn more and see if this is something they are interested in moving forward with. Helfrick hopes to launch the Champions for Teens Program in January. The program will include eight hours of training for advocates through a collaboration with various community partners. Lanc Co MyHome (Lancaster County Homeless Coalition) will offer a training about poverty. Lancaster General Health will provide training about trauma, and district representatives including Helfrick will train participants about special education and advocacy, as well as introduce advocates to the curriculum of the program. Christina Helfrick, social worker for secondary students in Donegal School District, is seeking Champions for Teens who will fill a role in the pyramid she created, representing support systems for at-risk homeless students. Teens came about after a needs assessment the district completed with Lanc Co MyHome. “One of the things that came out of that needs assessment is that students, especially those in high school, need extra support getting to adulthood, she explained. Currently, the district has about 20 homeless students, with seven at the high school, she said. In past years, homeless numbers districtwide have topped 100 students. Helfrick said she envisions the program starting out online, with advocates and students meeting once a week for nine weeks as they go through the curriculum. Then, it’s up to the pair to decide how to move forward from there. “They will start out with some goal-planning exercises, and, as the relationship develops, the advocate will help the student meet their goals, she explained. She said she hopes as pairs continue to work together, the advocate will be able to help the student con-

nect socially with the community at large. She encourages anyone with an interest in helping others to sign up for the Zoom info session. “The type of person who would be ideal for this is somebody who is persistent, empathetic, flexible, a good listener, conscientious and willing to bring along other support people alongside the youth as well, she said. Champions will help fill a need beyond school, Heflrick explained. “A student is more than just his academics, she said. “We can meet some of their needs as a district, but we know that our community is rich with empathy, and we want to tap into that. To learn more about the program or to register for the Zoom session, readers may email Helfrick at christina.helfrick@donegalsd.org.
