Volunteers Sought For Donegal Mentor Program By Chelsea Peifer

Since 2000, Donegal School District (DSD) has offered a mentoring program that connects students with adults as a way to help improve the self-esteem, motivation, and overall success of an individual. Initially implemented by Donegal Intermediate School principal Clare Reich, the program has continued to thrive by creating space and time for numerous relationships to flourish. DSD social worker Christina Helfrick explained that the program connects students, who are identified by a counselor or teachers, with a mentor

who serves as a caring adult and positive role model. The students may be shy and having a tough time making friends or may be experiencing a hardship at home, such as a divorce or death. Others may be struggling to focus and learn. “ We have a very compassionate community, and I often get questions (from people wondering how they) can help,” shared Helfrick. “Being a mentor is a wonderful way to help our community, because it’s an investment in our children. A caring adult in a child’s life builds resiliency, more than any other factor.” See Donegal Mentors pg 4

The Donegal School District mentoring program connected seventh-grade student David Zahm (left) with his mentor, David Christian, when Zahm was in third grade. The two have been meeting for weekly lunches during the school year ever since. A reception for individuals interested in becoming volunteer mentors with the program is planned for Oct. 2 at Donegal Primary School.

National Day Of Prayer For Mental Health Service Planned By Ann Mead Ash

This is only Gwen Didden’s second year helping to organize the Lancaster County National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, but as director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, Didden fully understands the significance of the event to those dealing with mental health issues. “The (prayer service) is important because it brings hope,” said Didden. “This (event) couples hope and prayer (to offer) spiritual guidance (that) is so important for people who are managing mental illness or living with people who are dealing with mental illness.” See Prayer Service pg 16

Gwen Didden (left) and Cathi Myers (right) are two of the organizers of the National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding service that will be held at Calvary Church on Oct. 11. No Longer Alone Ministries and Faith Friendship Ministries are sponsoring the event with assistance from Handi-Vangelism Ministries.

The Battle of Mogadishu took place 25 years ago, but the details remain fresh in the mind of retired United States Army Maj. Timothy Ryan. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about being over there with my guys or something that happened over there,” said Ryan. “I remember it so vividly.” The Battle of Mogadishu was fought on Oct. 3 and 4 in 1993 as various United States military elite special operations units were in Mogadishu, Somalia, to destabilize the government and bring humanitarian aid, along with the support of UNOSOM II (United Nations Operation in Somalia). Ultimately the goal of the mission was accomplished, but things became deadly See Mogadishu pg 2
