Scout Installs Flag Retirement Box At Milanof-Schock Library
DON
Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy has long been a drop-off location for worn and damaged American flags. The library periodically takes the gathered flags to a local American Legion for proper disposal. Dillon Greenig, a member of Boy Scout Troop 39 in Mount Joy, recently approached the library with an idea for his Eagle Scout project that would offer a more convenient way to collect the flags, rather than the cardboard box in the library’s vestibule. Dillon felt that installing a receptacle at the library would provide a central location for surrounding communities to utilize when disposing of old flags. Dillon raised funds to install a large metal flag box, decorated with the stars and stripes, for the community’s retired American flags. A reminder painted on the box states, “Flags should not be tossed in the garbage or shredded.” With some help, he installed the box on a new concrete pad next to the library’s flagpole. Members of his troop will collect the flags and provide a proper retirement ceremony for them. Dillon was able to present the library with a check for nearly $1,000, the money left over from the flag box installation. The library thanked Dillon for providing this service and for raising awareness of the importance of the proper disposal of the American flag. The public is invited to bring torn or worn American flags to the new repository in front of the library, located at 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy.
MHALC Presents CMAP BY ANN MEAD ASH
During the COVID-19 shutdown, the Steinman Foundation wanted to respond to the needs of the community. One way the organization chose to do that was to focus on mental health, with a goal of making sure community residents felt supported in unprecedented times. The foundation reached out to Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to bring a Community Mental Health Assistance Plan (CMAP) to local workers. “They partnered with us because we had relationships with service providers and we’re able to support individuals beyond the project,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHALC. MHALC turned to Philhaven/WellSpan as a consultant. “ WellSpan runs an Employee Assistance Program (EAP),” explained McDevitt, who added that the organization provided a lot of guidance in the best way to execute the plan, especially See MHALC pg 6
