Interns Suit Up for a Summer of Service

On a recent Sunday morn -

ing, Ryan Shepard could be found wearing a suit of armor and holding a shield while a child nearby waved a (fake) sword. It might be surprising to discover where he was doing this: in church.

Shepard, a 2024 graduate of Donegal High School who now attends Columbia International University, is one of five summer interns at Community Bible Church in Marietta. He donned the costume as part of a lesson he taught to children attending Sunday school at the church.

“I want to go into ministry and work in a church or work overseas as a missionary in the future, so I wanted to get ministry experience learning how to serve within a church,” he explained. “I also really enjoy working with kids.”

Community Bible Church has held a summer internship program since

When Susquehanna Stage presents “Bright Star,” audiences will discover a musical full of the ups and downs of human emotion.

“It’s a beautiful show,” said Lakisha Welch, who portrays Alice Murphy, the woman at the center of the story. “There’s an element of fate in this show. It’s a show about being true to yourself and trying to right the wrongs of the past in the best way you know how. It’s about characters looking for redemption.”

“Bright Star” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, July 25 and 26 and Aug. 1 and 2, as well as at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 31,

In the few years she’s served our country, Christine C. Emswiler has made a big impact. The 2022 Donegal High School graduate, now an Army corporal, was honored for her service with a Quilt of Valor presented by the Red Rose Quilters Guild in a ceremony organized in partnership with members of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 809 on the square in Maytown last month.

More than 100 people came out for the ceremony, which was a surprise to Emswiler, home for a brief leave from duty.

“The Red Rose Quilters Guild honored her with a quilt for her outstanding service. She served in nine foreign countries in three years,” said Sara Gutshall of the American Legion Auxiliary 809. “She is so deserving of this honor, and we want to thank her for her service.”

While living locally, Emswiler demonstrated an early commitment to community service and impact. She received the American Legion Award in 2018 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Mount Joy Post 5752 Founders Award in 2022. While a student at Donegal, she was a member of the field hockey team that won the state championship in 2018, and she was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2021.

She achieved other local honors, including service as a Poppy Princess in Bainbridge, and she was a Girl Scout for 13 years, earning both her Bronze and Silver awards.

“She has done a lot of local community service,” Gutshall shared. “She planted flowers at the square in Maytown for years.

2020. It offers an opportunity for college students to get some reallife experience on their resumes and get paid for it.

“We really believe in our young people,” said Jim Hottenstein, associate pastor. “We think this is a win-win. It’s a win for the church, because they help out with summer programming, and it’s a win for them, because we get to invest in them for the summer. We made it paid because we wanted to attract college students, and college students need money. We put money in our budget to have a team of interns every summer, and we love it.”

All of the interns this summer are members of the church. They interviewed for the position at the beginning of 2025 and lead worship on Sunday mornings for up to 50 children in grades one through five - among other responsibilities - from May through early August.

Joining Shepard as summer interns are Hannah Slobozien, Allison Fry, Lauren Nissley and Ava McAlonis.

“This a church internship. We do more than just work with kids, but it’s mostly kids,” said Slobozien, a 2024 Donegal High School graduate and current Penn State student returning for her second year as an intern. “I love building relationships with the kids, investing in them, becoming someone they can look up to.”

Along with leading the Sunday worship program, the interns help with Backyard Bible Clubs, the church’s program that brings lessons out into the community, as well as Junior Camp, where they spend a week with students in grades three through five. They also visit with senior citizens at the church, help with events such as the church’s Fourth of July celebration and attend staff meetings.

“The first two weeks is orientation, where we go over strength finders, so they learn their strengths and how to best work with each other,” said Cindy Gardner, director of children’s ministry. “We do a spiritual gifts course, life mapping, team building and getting to know each other. They also read two books and discuss the chapters once a week. One is a

“I’ve been super involved in children’s ministry my whole life,” she said, noting that she started assisting her mother in Sunday school classes as an elementary school student. “I want to be a teacher, so this fit into my desire to teach kids. I have also enjoyed seeing more of the inner workings of the church. I’ve gone here my entire life, but being able to see behind the scenes has been interesting.”

McAlonis just finished a year where she participated in the OneLife Institute in South Carolina, and she learned about the internship through Slobozien.

“I wanted experience with ministry, and I wanted to get more involved with the community here,” said the 2024 Elizabethtown High School graduate.

Fry, a 2023 graduate of Donegal High School who now attends Cedarville University, said she’s been enjoying working with the children and learning about the inner workings of the church she’s attended for a decade.

“We try to keep everything engaging and relevant for the ages and kids we’re working with,” she said, noting that the interns have a summer Sunday school curriculum that they use as a basis for their classes. “We want to be sure what we’re teaching really speaks to these kids and what interests them, and we want to play into our own strengths as well.”

Overall, the internship program has given young people a chance to take an active role in ministry while building skills for future success, Gardner said.

“Everybody who puts their faith in Jesus has a spiritual gift to give back to the church,” she remarked, encouraging other churches to consider an internship program. “Even if they can’t do a paid internship, they can encourage young people to use those gifts to serve the Lord.”

Tennis Tourney Will Serve Up Opportunities for All

Tennis, everyone?

In addition to being a high-level, United State Tennis Association-sanctioned women’s tournament, the 18th Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge offers all a chance to be involved during its weeklong run from Monday, Aug. 4, to Sunday, Aug. 10.

Admission is free to the tournament, and there is no ticketing for members of the general public. The USTA Pro Circuit event, with both singles and doubles competitions, will be held at the Hempfield recCenter, 1251 Stony Battery Road, Landisville. In addition to in-person viewing, matches will be livestreamed on the event’s website, https://hempfieldrec .com/landisville-pro-circuit/. The website also features information on the events surrounding the tournament and will include the brackets once the field has been finalized, said Wilson Pipkin, who is the Hempfield recCenter’s director of tennis and the event’s organizer.

The Koser Inspiring Women Luncheon presented by Turbo Execs will be held Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Blue Collar Restaurant, Bar & Catering, 949 Church St., Landisville. There is a cost to attend, and people may register on the tournament website. From 11 to 11:30 a.m. there will be Meet, Mingle, and Mimosas. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will be able to attend the day’s matches in the box seat area. The event will pay tribute to women from the area who have inspired others. People can pay for a chance to win items donated by local businesses and the tournament community partners. All proceeds will benefit Milagro House in Lancaster. “We recognize women in the community who are doing exceptional things, and we will tell their stories,” Pipkin said.

High School Night will be held

at 7 p.m. on Aug. 6, featuring an Around the World Challenge. Teams will rotate through the court, racing to hit a ball from each spot before the next team. The winning team will receive a pizza party during the 2025-26 tennis season.

Friday, Aug. 8, will be Kids Day. The event is free for kids age 12 and under. From 10 to 11:30 a.m., games will be held before tournament play begins. Email Catherine Shaak at shaak@ms.usta.com for more information.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, the Hempfield recCenter will host its first Wheelchair Tennis Clinic and Match Play event, which is open to wheelchair athletes of all ages and skill levels. The first 25 people who register will receive a gift bag. Check-in on the day of the event will begin at 9:30 a.m. The clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and lunch and match play will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. There is a fee, which will include lunch. Go to the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge website to register. Email Melissa Landis at mlandis11@outlook.com if there are questions.

Another opportunity for community members to participate is by volunteering. The list of openings can be found on the tournament website and includes jobs like working a shift in the players’ lounge, running the scoreboard, being a court monitor or part of the ball crew, and serving as a VIP host. “Sponsors and volunteers are what keeps the tournament free,” said Pipkin, who encourages interested volunteers to sign up early. “The key is to keep the event free, so we can promote tennis and promote a healthy sport.”

The plan is working. Last year, Hempfield recCenter won an award from the USTA for being the No. 1 facility in the country for adult programming, and it also features numerous programs for youths.

In 2023, she made Army history by being part of the 10th Mountain Division in Operation Northern Forest, entering a port previously unused by the U.S. military. While on this mission, she was the only senior medic to be trained in air evacuation using a Skedco, a product used by military personnel for rescue operations.

In August of 2024, she was promoted to corporal and received an Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM), awarded to service members who distinguish themselves through heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service.

The guild members create the quilts, which are specifically sized and labeled according to QOVF guidelines, and present them as tokens of appreciation to military members for their service and sacrifice. Along with the presentation of the quilt, members of the American Legion Riders from Elizabethtown, Mount Joy and Marietta honored Emswiler at the ceremony.

“Sometimes you don’t truly realize the impact you have on people. Coming from such a small town, everyone knows everyone,” Emswiler said. “And so coming home and seeing all these faces that I haven’t seen in a while, it truly means a lot, and it brings me great joy and a smile to my face to see everyone again.”

Following the ceremony, Emswiler returned to Louisiana to complete more medic training prior to her next deployment.

The Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge began in 2008 with a prize pool of $10,000, and that total has risen to $100,000, the maximum amount allowed for USTA circuit events. When Pipkin originally applied to host an event, the only opening on the schedule was in May. In 2013, there was a vacancy in the schedule in August, so Pipkin held two tournaments that year. The August date is advantageous for many reasons. Most significantly, the tournament takes place a couple weeks prior to the U.S. Open and is played on hardcourts just like the annual Grand Slam event in Queens, which is a

train ride away from Landisville. The surface and location help enable the Hempfield recCenter event to attract players ranked in the Top 100 of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

Some of the most well-known players to participate in the Koser Jewelers Tennis Challenge in the past did not win the event, including Jessica Pegula, who is currently ranked third in the world. In 2021, Emma Raducanu did not make the finals of the tournament but then went on an improbable run to capture the U.S. Open title a few weeks later.

Pipkin said he will receive the full list of entries on Tuesday, July

22. There are typically between 400 and 500 applicants, with the highest-ranked players qualifying for the draw. One player is known. Pipkin is permitted to choose one wild card entrant. This year, he selected York native Elizabeth Ionescu. “It’s great to have a local player, and she’s one of the top junior players in the country,” Pipkin said. “It’s nice to give a local girl a chance to play on the bigger stage.”

“You don’t really know who’s the next big star,” said Pipkin. “You can see players here and then see them on the biggest stage in the world (at the U.S. Open). That is really cool.”

and at 2 p.m. on Sundays, July 27 and Aug. 3. It will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta.

Written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, the Tony Award-nominated show is loosely based on a true story. It’s set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and moves back and forth in time from the 1920s to the 1940s.

“The show is the journey of Alice,” Welch explained. “When she’s young, she falls in love with the mayor’s son. They have a child, but the mayor does not want that stigma for his son, and he says he’s going to take the baby and put it up for adoption.”

It turns out what happens to the baby is actually much darker, but the show is not just sad or depressing, said Daniel Graf, who portrays Alice’s love interest, Jimmy Ray Dobbs.

“It’s a show about grief and mourning and loss,” he said, “but it’s so much more as well.”

Lindy Keefe, who plays Lucy Grant, a co-worker of Alice’s in the later timeline, agreed with Graf’s assessment.

with a laugh, referring to Alice in the 1920s. “I’ve been working on changing the tone, pitch and inflection of my voice as Alice ages, and there’s also the physicality of it.

Alice is a young, wild and free-spirited young lady who becomes this ultra-sophisticated take-charge kind of woman.”

“Bright Star” features a cast of 20. Additional lead characters include Zach Haines as Billy Cane, a man with whom Alice shares a mysterious connection, and Jordyn Johnson as Margo Crawford, a childhood friend of Billy’s.

The score includes Americana music with bluegrass and country themes, providing the perfect backdrop to the story’s time and setting. The dance numbers also complement the plot, Keefe said.

“The dancing matches the sound and time period,” she said. “There’s swing and tap and folksy music. The dance numbers show fun, rhythmic movement in a way that really matches the tone of the show.”

“It’s a statement on grief and loss, but it’s also one of hope and reunion and connection,” she said. “I think it’s surprisingly fun as well. I’ve seen shows where you leave, and you just feel heavy, and I don’t think this is one of those shows. It balances those feelings and emotions really beautifully.”

The show’s title refers to the characters finding their way and discovering who they were meant to be, Keefe shared.

“Your bright star is the thing that guides you and what you do in life,” she stated. “Love perseveres in this show. There’s the love that Alice has as she reconnects with her romantic love, but there’s familial love as well, finding your family again or creating your chosen family.”

The storyline moves back and forth between Alice as a teenager and as a career woman who has risen to the top in the literary world.

For Welch, portraying the differences in her character has provided an opportunity to hone her acting skills.

“It is a challenge, because I am way older than 16,” she said

Like Keefe, Jared Mattson portrays one of Alice’s co-workers in the 1940s scenes. His character, Daryl Ames, only knows the surface of Alice’s story at first but begins to learn more about her past as it’s revealed to him and Lucy.

He noted that playing the comic relief in a show full of heavy themes has been fun and a unique challenge to embrace.

“‘Bright Star’ is so fun because it’s simple characters, but it’s set in a story of epic proportions,” he remarked. “It’s easy to connect with the characters, but you leave the show going, ‘Whoa!’ with this rollercoaster of emotions.”

Audiences will also walk away connecting to at least one character in the show, Graf said.

“Because there are different characters that go on different paths throughout the show, everyone who comes to see it will take something different away with them,” he said. “There are so many different character arcs in this show, and audiences get to see the development of every single character.”
