The World War II Oral History Club will meet on Tuesday, June 25, at St. Anne’s Retirement Center, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia, at 7 p.m. Congressional Gold Medal and Purple Heart recipient Salvatore Castro will speak about his World War II experiences. The club meets every last Tuesday of the month except December. All World War II veterans and family members and others with an interest in World War II history are invited to attend. Movies Under the Stars on Friday, June 21, will feaure a free movie, “Peter Rabbit,” and popcorn under the stars in Locust Street Park in Columbia starting at dusk. Family Fun, Fireworks To Highlight Independence Day Festivities By Chelsea Peifer
Big plans are in the works for the Marietta Independence Day celebration on Saturday, July 6, as organizers are focused on creating another fun-filled day for the entire community. The fireworks display is set to go off at the Marietta War Memorial Park, 344 E. Walnut St., at approximately 9:15 p.m. Parking will be available on the baseball field, and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. Earlier in the day, folks will be invited to cheer on participants in the Historic Marietta Bike Race, with the first division beginning at 10:45 a.m. and the last set at 2 p.m. The start and finish lines for each competition will be in front of Lancaster Recumbent, 103 W. Market St., Marietta. In addition to the fireworks and bike race, plenty of entertainment will be offered in the Marietta War Memorial
Park. A cornhole tournament will begin at 2 p.m., and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams. Registration will open at noon, and there is a set fee per person. A Kids Zone from 3Monkeys Inflatables will be open in the park from 4 to 9 p.m., featuring a bounce house, a “Wacky World” obstacle course, and a 65-foot obstacle and slide challenge. Wristbands may be purchased for a set rate for children to enjoy the inflatables throughout the evening. Mascot Smokey Bear will also visit the park. At 7 p.m., character juggler Chris Ivey will take the stage to showcase his unique blend of technical juggling and theatrical flair. Local bands and musicians will also be performing on stage before and after Ivey’s show. Morning traffic anchor and reporter Corinne Lillis will serve as master of ceremonies for the evening. The Marietta fireworks display is set to begin at approximately 9:15 p.m. on July 6. Community-organized festivities in Marietta War Memorial Park prior to the fireworks will include a cornhole tournament, a bounce house and inflatables for children, local food trucks, music, and a performance by juggler Chris Ivey.
Sharing Hope At Relay For Life Marietta Motors To Host By Chelsea Peifer New Ownership Celebration New Holland police officer Wendell Metzler and his family had participated in the Relay For Life of Lancaster County for many years in support of a close friend who was fighting cancer. Then, in the summer of 2018 on a family vacation to Virginia Beach, Metzler had to be taken into the emergency room due to excruciating pain and the sudden inability to walk. He was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. “As a public servant, I had always taken great pride in helping others,” shared Metzler. See Relay For Life pg 2
The FUNguys For Life team (pictured) was one of 112 teams that participated in the Relay For Life of Lancaster County on June 7 and 8 at Conestoga Valley High School. Team captain and Cochranville resident Brenda Shelton (back, second from right) said the team name is in honor of her husband, Robert Shelton, who had a mushroom business and passed away in 2009. The FUNguys For Life raised $18,312 toward the event grand total of more than $672,462.
July will mark the one-year anniversary of a change in ownership at Marietta Motors, 1407 River Road, Marietta. Of the founding owners, Ken Breneman still remains, but his son Jason Breneman is his new partner and the president of the company. However, Jason is not new to the business, Marietta Motors, represented by (front, from left) as he has worked as a Noah Breneman, Zoe Breneman, Parker Breneman, technician at Marietta Motors for more than (back) Steph Breneman, owner and president Jason Breneman, founding owner Ken Breneman, 15 years. Marietta Motors was and Jeanie Breneman, will host a new ownership founded in 1991 by Ken celebration on June 22. The public is invited.
