Siblings Earn Scouting’s Highest Awards By Francine Fulton
In June of 2009, the Community Courier featured an article about 9-year-old Amanda Wisk of Downingtown and her younger brother, Jonathan, 8, who sold rocks and toys to benefit the Smile Train, an organization that provides cleft palate surgery to children in need of the operation. Combining sales with other donations, they raised $250, the amount needed for one operation. Now, nine years later, the siblings have earned the highest awards in Scouting, the Boy Scout Eagle Award and the Girl Scout Gold Award. Paws For The Pantry To Benefit EBBC To Celebrate 175 Years Animal House Project Of Sharing The Good News By Francine Fulton
Paws for the Pantry, featuring a dog trail walk, dog races, food and music, will be held at the Downingtown Dog Park at Lloyd Park on Sunday, Sept. 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. An admission fee will be collected. For those who bring a donation of dog food or cat food, the fee will be waived. All proceeds will benefit the Animal House Project’s Chester County Pet Food Pantry. The first-time event is being planned and organized by Malaika Furtado, Maggie Murphy and Lais Santoro, seniors at the Downingtown STEM Academy. “ We will have a dog trail set up around Lloyd Park,” Lais explained. “We’re also going to have dog races based on size and give out ribbons.
There will be food and music, and it will be a good community event.” She added that participating dogs must be leashed and well-behaved and get along well with other animals. Animal House Project will set up a tent at the event, and Yoshi, the organization’s spokespuppy, will be on hand. Light refreshments and dog treats will be available for purchase. Lais added that people without pets are also welcome to attend. “They can come out, see some cute dogs and play with them, and it all benefits charity,” she said. Lais explained that completing a community service project is part of a requirement at the STEM Academy. “At STEM, we have to do a graduation project; it’s called a CAS project, (which stands for) creativity, activity and service,” she said, noting that projects can See Paws For The Pantry pg 5
