“While the original farmhouse had great character, it had all the limitations of an 1800s farmhouse intended to house a family running a farm, not an organization wanting to share resources and education for this entire region,” Campbell said.
The Horn Farm Center worked through several variations of building design in an effort to balance the needs of York County and the surrounding region with the needs of the organization and its budget.

“Our final project design brought the price tag down to $1.4 million, a price that gave us pause despite knowing the challenges of rising material costs and bringing an historic structure up to commercial code,” said Lauren Hayman, president of the board of directors. “We are an organization founded by volunteers with an annual operating budget under $400,000.”
Local individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations have helped to raise nearly $1.2 million, providing funding for the first two phases of the project: design and construction.
Now the organization is
focused on phases three and four, which include occupancy and outfitting the building for operations.
The final phase for the new education center will be post-construction site work and beautification, which includes landscaping, hardscaping, a rain garden and rain catchment cisterns.
“We’re inviting supporters to become part of this project through recognition opportunities like wall and window plaques, which is a great way to leave a lasting legacy in the new building,” Campbell shared. “We’re also looking to partner with local

businesses to help transform the building into a learning space. We’re seeking in-kind donations to help equip the education center with furniture, technology and educational tools. These contributions will directly support our mission and help us create a space that’s both functional and inspiring for learners of all ages.”
She hopes people will continue to help the project reach completion.
“Donating to the Horn Farm Center is an investment in the future - of our land, our communities and the next generation of environmental stewards,” she said. “At a time when so many people are searching for solutions to ecological and climate challenges, Horn Farm Center is providing hope and empowering people to have a regenerative relationship with the land.”
The Horn Farm Center provides a place for people to reconnect with nature, learn how to grow food with care and discover what it means to live in balance with the world around us, she said.
“After losing our historic farmhouse to fire, we now have a rare opportunity not just to rebuild, but to reach more people in our community with our mission,” she noted. “Financial support helps us turn this moment of loss into one of hope and renewal. When you donate to the Horn Farm Center’s Education Center Building Fund, you’re not just helping to rebuild a building. You’re helping to create a more hopeful future.”

Tony and his wife, Helen, were instrumental in bringing the Power Packs Project - a Lancaster-based nonprofit that provides free food and a recipe for a meal weekly to families in needto EYSD in 2023. They also expanded the program to include the Giving Table, supplementing the Power Packs distribution with additional nonperishables and other items. And they worked with WellSpan to secure a grant for cooking classes, offering EYSD students an opportunity to take an active role in healthy eating.
“(The golf tournament) will hopefully raise the awareness and provide some money to be used on direct programs,” Tony shared. “Eastern York School District and River’s Edge Community Services were very helpful getting Power Packs established and care very much about the community and families. They both have been very receptive about the event
and continue to work with me as the event is planned.”
Tricia Henise, president of River’s Edge Community Services, said she was happy to help Lewis when he approached her about the fundraiser.
“The golf tournament is a great opportunity to bring awareness of what many of the families and students of Eastern York School District are dealing with - food insecurity,” she said. “We get busy in our world and life that we forget to look around and understand what others are going through. This is a great opportunity to support and help others.”
As Henise explained, River’s Edge Community Services is a faith-based human services organization in partnership with area congregations, service clubs and related agencies that cooperatively identify and actively pursue ways to meet the needs of the community within the EYSD.

LBC posts hymn sing
Lancaster Bible College (LBC), 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, will host its ninth annual hymn sing at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, in Good Shepherd Chapel. The theme will be “Celebrating God’s Faithfulness.”
The event will welcome back several alumni and former faculty members for community worship through well-known hymns of the faith. Leading the hymn sing will be Dan LaRue, a Class of 2023 music education graduate who is currently working
toward a master’s degree at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University; pianist and retired LBC music professor Dan Foster; organist and adjunct faculty member Frank Dodd of Westminster Presbyterian Church; and oboist Rachel Sidebothom, alumna and chair of LBC’s Music, Worship and Performing Arts Department. Several LBC alumni will also join as vocalists.
The hymn sing is free to attend, but tickets may be reserved at www.lbc.edu/ events.
Band Boosters plan bingo event

that came together around 2015,” Henise explained. “The founder, Carolyn Livingston, started this organization so that all churches and organizations would come together to support the community. She noticed that while churches were doing their own reach out, it was a little here and there. But by pulling all the churches and organizations together, we could help one another support the community without redundancy.”
River’s Edge has been able to support a variety of community initiatives, including Power Packs, a backpack program for the district, the Christmas outreach program Project Toybox, book drives and more.
Tony expects the community to turn out to support the golf tournament, noting he’s seen firsthand the generosity of the people who use the services of Power Packs and the Giving Table.
“The reactions seen during the Power Pack and Giving Table pickups - a lot of them just need a little help,” he shared. “Showing up, making sure they do
not take too much so the next person has enough, is a good feeling and shows the type of community we live in. Several volunteers have shared several stories of sharing and kindness.”
District representatives are happy Tony came up with the idea for the tournament.
“Anything we can do to raise funds for children and families to have access to meals is a priority,” said Ken Marx, business manager for EYSD.
Tony emphasized that all proceeds from the tournament will stay local.
“Exact distribution will occur after the event with ideas from the school district,” he stated. “It may include money for the Giving Table, food bank, unpaid student lunch balances or other areas of need.”
Lunch will be provided after the tournament by Big Bob’s BBQ. There is an option to purchase lunch only.

Evolve Life Group plans expansion to Lancaster
BY CAT SHANNON
When Joe Bachman formed Evolve Life Group in 2023, he hoped to bring together adults age 45 and older who were interested in making friends and serving their community. Now the organization, which began in the Eastern York region, is expanding to the Lancaster County side of the river.
Evolve Life Group will hold an open house/ organizational meeting on Thursday, May 22, at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. It will begin at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.
“Evolve East York campus was introduced with eight people and now has grown to over 80 regular members,” Bachman said. “We felt like the opportunity to have another campus just seemed natural for people in western Lancaster County to have the same opportunity as those in eastern York.”
restaurants, to serve other organizations and for special events.
“Over the last year and a half, our group has enjoyed getting to know one another through activities such as dinners, potluck meals, ’70s/’80s trivia, the Evolve Amazing Race and community service projects,” Bachman shared. “Our ultimate goal is just to continue connecting the community together and enjoy life together!”
Most importantly, he noted, Evolve helps people connect with others.
started new relationships that never would have happened if not for this group.”
And while it’s billed as being for people age 45 and up, that’s really an arbitrary number, he said. It’s more about the mindset.
“We’re just looking for people that are interested in a life group and are on the same or similar parts of their journey,” he explained.
will expand to other areas as we feel like there is an interest and that we can build a foundation of members to support it.”
He also noted that while the group has three core values, it abides by one “belief value” - it’s a faithbased group with Jesus as the foundation.
At the open house, people will learn more about the organization and its three core values: support ourselves, support each other and community service.
The group meets regularly for meals out at local
“This group allows people to develop relationships,” he said. “The fun thing so far is there’s a lot of people that have mentioned that they haven’t seen some people in a long time, and it gives them a way to reconnect. Many have
Bachman has big plans for the group. He noted that many organizations such as Boy Scouts started small, but then grew into national movements. He envisions the same for Evolve.
“We feel like Evolve can travel anywhere. The purpose for the group is not just to have numbers. The purpose is that we live up to our core values,” he stated.
“There are no geographic limitations to those. We
“He is our trunk, so to speak,” Bachman said, referencing John 15:5. “We feel like He is our foundation, and we are the branches to reach out to ourselves knowing that we need help. We are the branches to each other to help each other through life. We are the branches to our community to those in need.”
