Students at Eastern York High School (EYHS) are excitedly preparing to perform the high school edition of “Chicago,” a popular show recognized as the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Performances are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21, and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, in the EYHS Performing Arts Center, 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. Separate ticket prices have been set for students and for adults. Tickets may be purchased at the box office prior to each show or in advance by visiting http://EYHS BroadwayKnights.ludus.com. “Chicago (High School Edition)” features a book by Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Ebb. The musical is based on
the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins with script adaptation by David Thompson and music editing by Paul McKibbins. The EYHS musical will be directed by Rebecca Kurtek. “I was really excited when I found out we were doing ‘Chicago,’” shared senior Isabella Jenson. “I was introduced to the musical when I was really young by my great-grandmother, so I watched it a lot growing up, and my family is really big into musicals especially this one. The music is really good, and the whole show is just really exciting and fun to watch.” Set in the Roaring Twenties in Chicago, the musical tells the story of two murderers: Roxie Hart, played by junior Anna Jowanowitch, and Velma Kelly, played by Isabella Jenson. Both wind up on death row, where they develop a fierce rivalry while competing for the attention of
their lawyer, Billy Flynn, portrayed by senior Titus Richardson. “(Roxie and Velma) are two really big personalities, and they are both trying to get the spotlight, but of course there is not enough spotlight for both of them,” said Anna. Titus, who described his character in the musical as “very sleazy,” said that audiences will be greatly entertained by the EYHS production of “Chicago.” “One of the key points is that the musical is partly a satire on the gullibility of the American public in terms of criminal justice,” noted Titus. “It’s just a fun experience to watch, and you get drawn into the characters. Even though they’re not the greatest role models, you get drawn into their story.” “All the songs in the musical are an imitation of what you would think of as the Roaring Twenties,” See “Chicago” pg 2
