At Salem Hellers Church, faithfulness is a two-way street.
It’s a road that church members have been navigating every day for the last three centuries. And it’s a type of faithfulness worth celebrating.
“I don’t want to talk about our faithfulness to God,” said Joann Cooper, a longtime member of Salem Hellers Church and the head of the planning committee for the upcoming celebration. “God has been faithful to this church and kept it together. For some reason, He’s been faithful in keeping this little church on the hill going.”

Sarah Zeitler wants to get people talking about some of life’s most basic necessities while making sure everyone has access to them.
That 300-year-old faithful pact between God and the church’s members will be just one of the things
that will be celebrated when Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers conducts its Service of Thanksgiving at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.
“The fact that we’re 300 years old is a pretty big deal,” said Cooper. “It certainly is a long time.
Lancaster wasn’t even a city when our church was established, and the United States wasn’t even a country.”
Salem Hellers’ Service of Thanksgiving will feature a traditional hourlong worship service enriched by hymns and anthems from the Salem Hellers choir and musicians

Pathways Heritage Day can’t transport visitors back in time. But the event can make history come to life.
“If you don’t take advantage of the knowledge of history, you’re going to repeat it,” said Ron Schlegel, a Pathways Heritage Day board member and team member. “We’re trying to
present this idea of history from a familial perspective.
The best part of it is seeing the smiles on people’s faces, just seeing families and the interactions of people with each other.”
Pathways Hybrid Learning Community will conduct the seventh edition of its annual Heritage Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the historic
The Lancaster woman is the local face of I Support the Girls, a national nonprofit that collects bras, underwear and feminine hygiene products for girls and women in need. What began for Zeitler as a simple search for a place to donate gently used bras has grown into a mission she calls both energizing and deeply personal.
“I’m very focused on changing the conversation,” says Zeitler, who has two teenage daughters, ages 14 and 16. “Why don’t we talk about pads and tampons? ... I tell my girls, ‘You don’t have to be embarrassed by this topic.’ I want to help people who don’t have access to products most of us take for granted.”
Zeitler discovered I Support the Girls in late 2024. When she realized Lancaster no longer had an active chapter, she quickly stepped up. The hyperlocal aspect drew her in.
“I like that the bras you’re giving are not going to women in another state,” she said. “They’re going right back to local women. I also wanted to be sure these bras were going to women in need who were going to use them.”
I Support the Girls began 10 years ago when founder Dana Marlowe started the organization in the Washington, D.C., area. From one donated bra, the organization has grown to more

The mission statement of Handi-Vangelism (HVMI) specifies that the organization “exists to share the compassion of Christ by walking alongside individuals facing life’s challenges and equipping others to do the same.” With that goal in mind, the ministry focuses on three areas: disability, grief, and training. The disability ministry includes the summer day camps and a variety of Bible clubs and support groups. The grief ministry, called BASIS, provides Christian support groups for grieving parents throughout the county and beyond, and the training program offers workshops to help family members, friends, and community leaders learn about what life is like with a disability or how to navigate the journey of grief.
als who need them regardless of age. “It never ends,” she said. “Individuals shift from group to group.”
Kelley backed up her words by pointing out that the ministry will start a new preschool group for children with disabilities at the HVMI offices, 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron, beginning on Monday, Oct. 27, at 10:30 a.m. “It will be the fourth Monday of each month from October to April,”explained Kelley, who added this is the first time the ministry has held a group for preschoolers. “We will have a new daytime parent support meeting during that preschool group for parents who want to stay for coffee and to chat,” added Kelley.

“We are growing each year,” said Tara Kelley, director of disability ministries and training and equipping with HVMI. “We are dividing and adding programs as we see the needs of children shift and as the older ones (mature).” Kelley emphasized that the ministry will continue to provide free services for individu-
HVMI Bible club programs for children, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities of all levels are held at HVMI. A few groups meet at local churches, including Akron Community Church and New Joy Church in Ephrata. “Because the groups are divided based on ability level and learning style, and behavior, it’s best to contact us (if you’re interested),” explained Kelley. “They are open to the public, and we welcome more people,” she added, noting that discerning the best
HVMI offers workshops in disability and grief for people who want to know how to help friends or family members. “These training sessions are for people in the community and churches who wish to understand more about disabilities and grief,” explained Kelley, who added, “I have had grandparents who said, ‘I had no idea (this is how my grandchild felt)’ or ‚ÄòI finally understand why my grandchild acts this way,’” said Kelley, who noted workshops include topics such as autism and ADHD. “Adults with ADHD have said, ‘I now understand why I am the way I am or why my spouse is the way he is,’” shared Kelley. “It helps equip families to deal with the situation.”
Grief seminars are presented by HVMI founders Tim and Kathy Sheetz. “We have updated and adapted the information, and we
are ready to go,” said Kelley who noted that sessions are held for the public, or a church or community organization can schedule one at their location. “We are here to help if they need it,” stated Kelley. Readers who are interested in Bible clubs or workshops may call 717859-4777 and ask for Kelley. BASIS has support groups meeting in a number of locations within Lancaster County including Akron, Mount Joy, Paradise, and Quarryville. An online group meets monthly as well. The ministry holds an annual breakfast and picnic. A new group, which is open to any bereaved parent or grandparent who has experienced the death of a child, is starting up this fall in New Holland. “(BASIS director Dan Steinman) has had more inquiries in the New Holland area,” shared Kelley, who noted that although the group will meet in the Prayer and Meditation Room at Garden

than 40 million products donated over the past decade.
Locally, Zeitler collects donations and works with partners including Second Grace, which supports young single mothers, and River’s Place, a free clothing closet at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim Township. She has also begun reaching out to local doctor’s offices, especially plastic surgeons, to encourage women undergoing breast surgery to donate their gently used bras.
At her job as a product manager at Armstrong, she regularly collects donations. And thanks to I Support the Girls national partnerships with major retailers like Victoria’s Secret, she receives shipments of new bras to distribute.
“I like to make sure there is diversity in what I’m giving away,” she said. “I want to have everything from sports bras to special occasions, from tween sizes to larger sizes.”
Her work has become a family effort. Her daughters, August and Citizen, pitch in with everything from social media posts to sorting donations. They’ve also joined her at training sessions offered by the national nonprofit, turning the project into a shared mission of empowerment.
This year, Zeitler received a grant to create a permanent collection site in Lancaster. While she’s still searching for the right location, she continues to collect donations at her home and through temporary community partners. This fall, for example, a collection bin will be available at Pocket Books,
903 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, through October.
For Zeitler, the work is about more than just distributing products; it’s about starting conversations that too often remain in the shadows.
“I’m passionate about women’s causes,” she said. “We have very unique needs. Men don’t have to worry about having the right bras to go to work and feel professional or feel confident in their own skin.
This is something I’m very passionate about, and doing this work literally energizes me.”
She notes that her involvement in the project has raised her own awareness about community needs.
“Think about victims of domestic violence,” she said. “The police often collect undergarments as evidence, and these women are sent home without underwear. ... Girls literally miss school because they don’t have the proper hygiene products.”
It’s also important to Zeitler that donations stay in the local area.
“Everything that comes into us, whether it’s money, hygiene products or bras, it all goes right to women and girls right here in Lancaster,” she said. “This is really a boots-on-the-ground organization, and we are helping right where it’s needed.”

A weekend of activities has been planned at Conestoga Christian School (CCS) on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17 and 18. Events will include a chicken barbecue, alumni activities and the school’s 52nd annual auction. Community members are welcome to participate.
The event will begin with the chicken barbecue dinner on Oct. 17. Diners may purchase their chicken in a drive-through format from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., or they may choose to dine in the school gymnasium from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
“People can go to our school website and place an online order. You get an order number, and then you can just drive up to our front parking lot, and we will get your order ready for you,” explained Elisha Hall, CCS events coordinator. “We have the dine-in option in case there are families who want to reconnect and come back and visit the school.”
Also on Oct. 17, a gift certificate store will be open outside the school, and then it will move inside to the gymnasium at 4 p.m. There will also be homemade apple dumplings available for purchase. There will be a set price to purchase a pan with eight dumplings each.
After the barbecue, there will be an alumni celebration, with activities located behind the school. First up will be a student Powderpuff Football Championship, followed by an alumni soccer game. “We already have alumni signed up,” Hall noted.
Night, Relaxation and Wellness, Backyard Fun, Fall Fun, Road Trip and A Hunting We Will Go. “Our class baskets are always a big hit,” said Hall. “Each grade level comes up with a theme. The senior class always does a College Ready basket with sheets for a college dorm bed, a (coffee maker) and a microwave - things you need for your dorm room.”
Each year, there is also a “paddle raise” during the auction for a special project. “This year’s (special project) is to hopefully install a high-visibility digital sign in front of campus,” Hall said, noting that sign will share event announcements, celebrate student

The event is free, with prizes awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place winners. Doors will open at 3 p.m. with snacks available for sale.
For more information, call 717-278-9008.
On Oct. 18, breakfast items and individual apple dumplings will be offered for sale at the Cougar Cafe. There will also be a Cougar Grounds coffee area offering hot coffee, cold brew, hot cider and hot chocolate. The live auction on Oct. 18 will be held from 9 a.m. until the last item is sold. On the auction block will be handmade quilts, experiences and homemade jams and yogurt. Also featured will be artwork, some made by the students themselves. Eighth-grader Ella Perechinsky created a painting for the auction that features a colorful sunset done in acrylics. The artwork also includes Psalm 19:1, which states, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handywork.” ”I drew it first with pencil, and then I went over it with paint,” Ella noted. In addition, each class at the school has designed a themed basket for the auction. Basket themes this year will include Date

Brubaker Homestead, 414
Long Lane Road, East Earl. The sponsored event, which is free to attend and offers free parking, serves as a public learning event, a community outreach and a fundraiser for the hybrid micro-school.
“The atmosphere is going to be in tune with the heritage of the area up until the 1900s,” said Schlegel. “Pony rides, horse-drawn wagons and ice cream makingpeople are going to be immersed in and engaged in all of those types of things. The homestead is somewhat in the middle of nowhere, so you’re away from traffic or anything modern. The focus is on being accurate, educational and entertaining.”
Pathways Heritage Day is designed to provide visitors with a glimpse into what frontier life looked like in northeast Lancaster County and southwest Berks County from the middle of the 18th century until the onset of the 20th century. With the assistance of Pathways students, nearly 300 presenters, enactors, craftsmen, tradesmen and military personnel will offer a variety of presentations on everything from blacksmithing to gun making, from beekeeping to spinning and weaving, from hide tanning to antique farm equipment.
“Students are involved, but we have very talented adults who will lead the charge on this,” said Schlegel. “It’s an event where the adults are the primary interpreters who are showing what happened during those years. People will be talking to folks about what they do. People will be up on stage giving 25-minute presentations on history. Many of the interpreters communicate in first person and talk in the fashion of how people would’ve spoken years ago.”
But there are also interactive pieces to Pathways Heritage Day. The event will also feature contests, encampments, children’s activities,
activities for adults, open-fire cooking, storytelling, a test of survival skills, a woodlands walk challenge and music.
“It goes without saying how complex this thing is,” said Schlegel. “Just as the name implies, we’re looking at the heritage of the upper Cocalico Valley. We have the heritages of Mennonite, Anabaptist, English, German, and we melt them together into this event. Around 1740 or 1750, the area was basically the frontier, and eventually people started to settle in this area.”
More than 4,000 people from Lancaster, Berks, Chester and Lebanon counties are expected to attend Pathways Heritage Day.
“It’s a community endeavor, and it involves many different organizations,” said Schlegel. “It started with the faculty and their ideas. They just wanted to take those educational points and present them to the community. Our students become very engaged in various aspects of the event, and they learn to communicate very clearly and closely with individuals. It’s a learning process for our students as well.”
Pathways Hybrid Learning Community operates a high school at 414 Long Lane, East Earl, and a middle school and elementary school at 432 Reading Road, East Earl. The 75 students in kindergarten through 12th grade who attend Pathways complete their educations and schoolwork both independently and collectively at home and at school.
“We’re not a homeschool. We’re a hybrid mini-school,” said Schlegel. “It’s not a very large operation, but we focus very intently on the students we have. It’s about having interactions with the students. We’re very active in the community as part of the learning focus for our students.”

“With our location on the hill, we hope that our church building is a lighthouse for the community,” said Cooper. “Throughout the years, we’ve had various concerts, and we’ve helped out in the community. We’ve also had fun days for kids. For many years, we’ve been giving to local ministries.”
After meeting for worship in neighbors’ homes, German settlers to the Conestoga Valley area built a permanent log cabin house of worship near the Jacob Heller family farm in the early 1700s. The present sanctuary was constructed in 1896, and the education building was added in 1958.
Since 1725, Salem Hellers Church has been led spiritually by 26 pastors.

“I think it’s a congregation that seeks to serve the Lord and that cares very deeply about one another,” said McLain, a resident of East Lampeter Township. “We constantly hear that the church is friendly to outsiders. The Gospel is preached every Sunday, and people
“Many people from the Germanic cultures came to the United States because of religious persecution, and many settled in the Conestoga Valley area,” said Cooper. “They began coming in the 1700s, and they settled in a 20-mile area. Because transportation was slow, meeting places had to be close by. We had a very humble beginning with a log cabin with dirt floors and slab seats. If you look at the level of sanctuary we have today, it’s been quite the evolution.”
“I think Salem Hellers is following the trajectory of what you see in society,” said McLain. “Not as many people go to church as they used to. Certainly, in the 1700s, it was different and everyone went to church.”

Lydia Hamilton Smith was a prominent African American businesswoman in 19th-century Lancaster, as well as the collaborator of abolitionist congressman Thaddeus Stevens. Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, it will be open to the public. The group, which will meet the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m., will next gather on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Readers who are interested in the group may visit www.hvmi .org/grief-basis or call HVMI and ask for Steinman.
Several years ago, HVMI purchased a former golf course and built the current offices on part of the land. The organization began to hold day camp there in 2021. Two threeday sessions are now held each week during the months of June and July.
“That’s nine sessions over six weeks,” explained Kyle Robinson, executive director of HVMI, who added that 123
campers took part this year. A year from now, construction on buildings for overnight camp is scheduled to begin. Proposed facilities include a multipurpose building, which will house a chapel, Bible classrooms, training rooms, and a large meeting room, along with a dining hall and kitchen. A second building behind the main one will provide dorm-style living with smaller rooms for campers with medical needs and staff members, meeting rooms, and an infirmary to make overnight camp available in the future. Outside, a pool, pavilion, and playground are planned. Already, carefully graded handicapped-accessible walkways traverse the hillside. By the summer of 2028, the organization plans to hold overnight camping at the facility. Fundraising to make the dream a reality is ongoing.
More information about HVMI may be found at www.hvmi.org.
