At the speed of a high school senior

Whenthe Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) Class of 2023 graduates at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, June 6, at 7 p.m., two of the seniors will address the gathering. Both Sara Geleta and Elyse Emrey were chosen by a panel based on video auditions to give speeches at the event.

Sara is the daughter of Solomon Geleta and Gete Buli of Lancaster. She has given her speech the working title “In a Flash.” “(My speech) talks about how fast our high school careers went (before) it transitions into acknowledging the opportunity we have now that we have graduated,” Sara explained. For Sara, one of those opportunities will be studying at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., in the fall. She plans to major in political science in hopes of eventually going into law. She noted that her time at CVHS was marked by opportunity as well. “(At CVHS) I was able to try

a lot of new things,” she said, noting that just this past year she participated in a number of different clubs. “(The experience) helped me to learn about myself and what my interests are,” she said. Sara noted that her drama experience at CVHS has helped to quell any pre-graduation jitters, but she noted it will be different addressing her peers

rather than performing for a diverse audience.

Elyse is the daughter of Matthew and Susan Emrey of Leola. Elyse will have the unique experience of giving her high school graduation speech exactly 26 years to the day that her mother addressed her graduating class at Garden Spot High School. When she told her mother she was thinking of auditioning, Susan

encouraged her, and Elyse then used Susan’s speech for inspiration in writing her own, which she calls “Counting Down.” “I focused on how we all rush through life during our four years of high school,” she said. “We are always moving on to the next thing.” Elyse noted she will then counsel her classmates to take it easy. “We should slow down and try to enjoy each day,” she stated. In October of 2023, Elyse will attend Lancaster School of Cosmetology. She plans to eventually focus on hair with the longterm goal of owning her own salon. She is glad she attended CVHS because of the variety the school offered. “CVHS is very diverse,” she pointed out. “You meet a lot of different people and have a lot of opportunities with clubs and sports. I like the diversity.”

LVS schedules 30th annual auction

“It’s only one day this year. That’s a big difference,” said Katie Martin, Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) event coordinator, of the 30th annual LVS auction, which will be held on Saturday, June 10, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Martin noted that all the activities will be held outdoors on the LVS grounds at 144 Orlan Road, New Holland. LVS provides vocational services for individuals with disabilities.

The event will open with a by-donation breakfast including pancakes, eggs, and hash browns, beginning at 7 a.m. A candy drop from an ultralight plane will be held at 8 a.m., weather permitting. LVS CEO Kirt Barden will welcome the gathering at 8:15 a.m., and the live auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. with crafts, farm supplies, and groceries going over the block.

Nearly half a million served

“There are similar programs, but to the best of our knowledge there is no one that does exactly what we do,” stated Brad Peterson, executive director with Power Packs Project, which delivers ingredients to make a nutritious meal to families in Lancaster, York, and Lebanon counties. Peterson noted that last year, the organization provided nearly half a million meals made up of more than 500,000 pounds of food.

Power Packs was founded in 2009 by Joan Espenshade, who was

volunteering at a Lancaster city school when she saw some students lined up to get breakfast and others visiting the nurse’s office complaining of stomach aches because they had not had enough to eat over the weekend. “We give a recipe and all the ingredients for that recipe,” said Peterson, adding that the costs of the ingredients are included and that a recent meal cost $7.91 to make. “It’s part of our mission to empower families to show them they can create a healthy meal on a budget,” he said. The pack, which usually weighs 9 pounds or less, also includes staples such as cereal, canned goods, and fresh milk.

Originally, the program distributed food to schools in bulk, and volunteers assembled the packs in grocery bags for students. However, with the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, schools were closed, and when they reopened, volunteers were not allowed inside. “We started packing boxes in our warehouse,” said Peterson, who noted that school and church parking lots became pickup sites for parents. The

situation changed the Power Packs distribution system permanently.

Now, boxes are packed at the Power Packs Project location at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for distribution to schools and students each Wednesday and Thursday. The program runs 35 weeks during the school year, and an eight-week summer distribution will begin Wednesday, June 21, and end Wednesday, Aug. 9.

Power Packs runs on volunteer power, clocking more than 700 volunteer hours provided by 475 individuals in the month of April. “We can always use more volunteers,” said Peterson, who noted some volunteers put in as many as 20 hours a week. The organization has a special need for volunteer drivers to deliver packs to schools and volunteers to distribute at schools. Peterson noted that for those tasks, it makes sense if the volunteers live in or near the districts receiving the delivery and doing the distribution.

Current Lancaster County Power Packs distribution areas include a total of 66 schools located in the School District of Lancaster, Warwick, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Hempfield, Donegal, Cocalico, Columbia, and Lampeter-Strasburg. Most volunteer tasks require about a two-hour time commitment. Distribution and delivery volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. “Packers at the warehouse typically do twohour shifts but if someone only has an hour, that’s fine,” said Peterson, who added that groups of volunteers have come in during evenings and on weekends.

“FINDING NEMO”

Flowers and plants, power tools, indoor furniture, and hunting and outdoor items will be sold between 9 a.m. and noon. Pulled pork sandwiches will be available for purchase beginning at 10:30 a.m.

At noon, a presentation featuring LVS participants will be held, and Brian French, director of programs for LVS, will speak.

Specialty items will go up for bids at 12:15 p.m. “We have some Bernina sewing machines,” said Martin. At 12:30 p.m., quilts, wall hangings, and outdoor furniture, including a wooden playground ark, will be auctioned, as will portions of meat. Pork halves, beef quarters, and a barbecue pig will be sold. “A barbecue pig is a whole pig that is already roasted,” said Martin, who said the pig will weigh about 150 pounds and will feed up to 50 people.

At 1 p.m., at least five sheds will be sold. LVS marketing and communications assistant Emily Bauman said that last year’s sheds were well crafted. “They were beautiful last year,” said Bauman. “They look like miniature houses. They are just gorgeous.”

The auction will conclude with the sale of frozen foods.

Attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items to donate to the food pantry at The Factory Ministries in Paradise. Food items that are sought include Hamburger Helper, boxed mashed potatoes, pasta and pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese kits, oatmeal, and canned tuna.

LVS is also seeking volunteers to help out with the auction. Readers who would like more information about the event or volunteering may visit www.lighthousevoc.org.

CV’s boys’ lax, volleyball bow out in District openers

It may not be up there with all-time losses like the new England Patriots losing to the New York Giants, but a loss is still a loss, and a playoff loss stings just a bit more. Need proof, look no further than the Conestoga Valley boy’s lacrosse team who saw their season come to an abrupt close thanks to a loss to L-L rival Hempfield in the opening round of the District 3-3A playoffs.

The loss took place on May 23rd and left the Buckskins at 9-9 as they head off into the

sunset of 2023. Soren Stoltzfus finished with 10 saves, but it was not enough as the Black Knights outscored CV in all four quarters, including a 5-0 blitz in the final frame that set the 17-4 final. Tyson Zwaska accounted for half of the goals while Jeff Fisher and Hunter Silvaggio split the remaining two. Noah Harrison chipped in with an assist.

VOLLEYBALL

The boys’ volleyball team also headed off into the sunset, dropping their District 33A opening round clash opposite Governor Mifflin on the 23rd. CV was able to push the

Mustangs a bit more in each game but the ‘Bucks still ended up on the wrong side of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-23 finals leading to the 3-0 sweep and a 7-8 mark on the season.

Carson Hoover led the way with 13 kills and three aces while Samson Pha (14 assists) and Trevor Forney (12 assists) provided the setup. Rowan Aisenbrey added 14 digs and Austin Li one block to finish up.

TRACK

With the LancasterLebanon League Championship Meet in the rearview mirror the Buckskins’ track and field teams turned their attention to Shippensburg University for the 2023 edition of the District 3 Championship Meet. The results were mixed but CV will have three entries, Zach Phy, Alondra Ortiz, and the Lady Buckskin

400m relay team, returning to Seth Grove Stadium for the PIAA meet.

Ortiz will go solo for the PIAA meet in the 200m after placing sixth with a 25.69 run in the finals. The junior just missed a second solo event, her 12.46 in the 100m good enough for fifth on the day but short of the state qualifying standard. She will make a second appearance at the state meet along with Hallie Schnapf, Brooke Denlinger and Mae Lindor thanks to their sixth place time of 49.19 in the 400m relay.

Denlinger made the final podium stand visit for the Lady Bucks, finishing eighth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.72. She added a 14th place run in the 300 hurdles while also taking part in the 1600m relay that finished 15th. Ortiz, Belle Marie

Alston, and Ayva Fisher took care of the other three legs of the relay, clocking a 4:36.09. CV’s 3200m relay team of Meagan Kime, Kylee Antrim, Seana Dougherty and Alston finished 14th with a time of 10:21.01.

The Buckskins highest place-winner was Aidan Zimmerman who claimed 4th in the javelin with a top toss of 173-02.

Phy’s state qualifying run came in the 300 hurdles where a 39.79 was good enough for fifth place and made Phy the lone L-L athlete taking part in the 300 hurdles at the state meet.

The Buckskins did have one more athlete collect a medal for their work, Aidan Zimmerman. The junior was CV’s highest medal winner, claim-

“The Sound of Music” announced

Servant Stage will present “The Sound of Music” at the Good Shepherd Chapel on the campus of Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Friday, June 2, to Sunday, June 18. Performances will take place on Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 and 7 p.m. There will not be a 7 p.m. show on Sunday, June 4.

This iconic Broadway musical, based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, follows an ebullient postulant who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the

forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire von Trapp family must make a moral decision. The final collaboration between the duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein took the 1960 Tony Awards by storm. However, it rose to international popularity through the Academy Award-winning film adaptation starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which debuted in 1965. The musical’s songs include “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and “My Favorite Things.”

For Servant Stage, which has a mission to make outstanding, enter-

ing fourth in the javelin with a toss of 173-02.

Ben Eberly just missed joining Phy on the medal stand, settling for ninth place with a 40.56.

CV’s 1600m relay team of David Irwin, Nick Tran, Andrew Hoffner and Joey Castronova also just missed a medal, finishing ninth with a 3:26.58. Castronova was not as close in the open 400m where his 51.80 slotted him 20th in the final standings.

CV missed one last medal opportunity in the 3200m relay where Irwin, Carson Miller, Yonatanne Desta and Timothy Gitonga finished 15th with an 8:27.24.

Thabo Lautsbaugh had two near misses, finishing tenth in both the long jump and triple jump.

taining, family-friendly shows accessible to the community, “The Sound of Music” has long been near the top of the list of shows the organization wanted to produce. Servant Stage’s production has a 16-piece orchestra and a cast of nearly 60 performers, including 20 young local performers sharing the roles of the von Trapp children and a 25-member women’s ensemble giving voice to the nuns of Nonnberg Abbey.

All performances are offered at pay-what-you-will prices. For more information and to reserve tickets, visit www.ServantStage.org or call 717-455-0255.

Summer Music Series at Long’s Park is a Lancaster institution

They say that the best things in life are free. Maybe the only thing better is people sharing resources with others.

The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series is back bigger and better than ever. But as it has evolved into a major event in Lancaster County, the Summer Music Series has become more reliant on the financial support of local businesses and philanthropic organizations.

Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation president Tom Ellis said that the popular events couldn’t be offered free to the public without that support. This year’s 13-concert Summer Music Series, which will be conducted every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. from June 4 to Aug. 27 at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, is being backed by Citadel, Clark Associates, Ephrata National Bank, Everence, the Hershey Company, Lancaster County Community Foundation and Woodstream.

“It’s a special event and businesses are allowing us to have this event,” said Ellis. “The series doesn’t happen without these sponsors. It’s not a nicety; it’s a necessity. They’ve really stepped up in an economy that doesn’t allow for this type of funding.”

“We curate music and art for everyone in the Lancaster community,” added Ellis. “Most of our audience is drawn from the city of Lancaster.”

If generous support has become a trademark of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series’ 61-year tradition, so has diversity. This summer’s music series, which features a wide variety of genres, from jazz to Irish, from blues to rock, from bluegrass to funk and soul, promises not to disappoint.

Traditionally, the Summer Music Series has drawn between 3,000 and 6,000 viewers for each 90minute concert. That number usually balloons to 25,000 to 30,000 for its annual patriotic concert, which this year will be celebrated on July 2.

“It’s how summer begins,” said Ellis. “For people who grew up here, they’ll say, ‘I remember going to the

Refresh Lancaster to launch summer efforts

Refresh Lancaster will hold a summer kickoff event on Friday, June 2, at Union Community Care, 304 N. Water St., Lancaster, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The organization will give away 32ounce, wide-mouth water bottles filled with items such as sunscreen, socks, lip balm, snacks, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a McDonald’s gift card. The organization will also provide lunch, haircuts, and information about different resources available through partnerships with other programs.

To donate toward the giveaway, visit “Refresh Lancaster” on Facebook. Checks can be made out to Lancaster EMS with “Refresh” in the memo line. Refresh hopes to raise $1,000 to give out 50 water bottles. Refresh Lancaster is a mobile shower and medical care service unit offered by a partnership involving Lancaster EMS, LancCo MyHome, and a local entity depending on the area of the county where the unit deploys.

Long’s Park Summer Music Series.’ I think this year’s lineup is one of the best we’ve had in years. Its diversity is curated for every audience. We want to make sure the music resonates with the citizens of Lancaster. We almost need to be fresh and new every year so people come back.”

The now-iconic Long’s Park Amphitheater was built in 1962, and the summer music simply followed. Over those years, the Summer Music Series has introduced people to performers like Count Basie, Pat and Shirley Boone, The Smothers Brothers, Helen Reddy, The Spinners, Aretha Franklin, Arlo Guthrie, Roberta Flack and Kevin Bacon, many before they became household names.

“The musicians come to us after every event and tell us, ‘I hope you realize what you have here,’” said Ellis. “We don’t look for bands that create an on-stage performance

through pyrotechnics and lighting. We want it to be pure art through music. We want to have artists who are true to their craft.”

Family fun to raise funds

Several years ago, Brandon Adams, a graphic designer with Gar-

den Spot Village (GSV), felt a calling to partner with Missions of Hope International (MOHI), an organization that tackles poverty with the

goal of transforming lives through the hope of Christ. The first trip based on that partnership occurred in February of 2022, when a Travel with Purpose team made up of GSV staff members and residents visited people in need in the urban slums of the Mathare Valley, Nairobi, Kenya. A new team is scheduled to visit and serve in the same region in September. This team will include Adams, Barbara Carter, Evelyn Hershey, Edna Jean Homsher, Katie Kauffman, Vanessa Moore, Jeannine Perry, and Todd Perry.

To defray costs of the trip, the team has scheduled a fundraiser called Family Backyard Bash and Movie Night in the pavilion and on the adjoining lawn at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Friday, June 9. Festivities, which will include a variety of activities, food, and a movie, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Area residents are invited to bring their lawn chairs and blankets. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held in the GSV Chapel and the Village Square.

Adams came across the idea for the Backyard Bash when he was researching fundraising events. “I saw the idea for a movie night, but that spun into a Backyard Bash and Movie Night because that’s more fun than just a movie,” said Adams. Jeannine, who is helping to organize the fundraiser, said that the

group hopes to offer African-themed games as part of the Backyard Bash. She added that a drum circle will be organized by Lisa Fairman of Earth Rhythms, who will bring about 40 drums and invite people of all ages to participate. “She leads the rhythms and she does some cultural singing with that,” said Jeannine.

Free African-themed face painting and an African dress-up photo booth will be available.

Team member Hershey noted that a variety of yard games will include cornhole, ladderball, pickleball, and flying disc. Free food items that will be served at the event will include popcorn and ice cream.

At dusk, an outdoor, familyfriendly African-themed movie will be shown. Adams said the film would include preview videos from MOHI and run about two hours.

Currently, 28 children are sponsored through MOHI by 25 GSV residents and staff. “We will meet all those kids and hang out with them (when) we are there,” said Adams, who noted the team will leave on Sept. 16. “Some of the sponsors will be there (to meet the children).”

During the Backyard Bash, a freewill offering will be accepted, and attendees will have opportunities to sponsor children through MOHI.

More information about GSV may be found by searching for “Garden Spot Village” on Facebook. For details about the event, visit www.gardenspotvillage.org and click on “View Events.” Additional information about MOHI is available at www.mohiafrica.org.

Our Own Homegrown STRAWBERRIES

KING’S FARM MARKET Vegetable

Creek in Talmage, PA on Rt. 772

Family Farm Days will celebrate agriculture

Produce doesn’t come from a market. Milk and eggs don’t come from a grocery store.

They all come from farms.

That’s the message that the organizers of Family Farm Days are trying to convey. Farms always have been, and will likely continue to be, the most important producer of food in Lancaster County.

This year’s edition of Family Farm Days will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, at Oregon Dairy, 2900 Oregon Pike, Lititz. The

annual event, which offers free admission, is being sponsored by Lancaster County Agriculture Council and Oregon Dairy.

“If we wouldn’t have farms, we wouldn’t have food,” said Maria Forry, a partner at Oregon Dairy. “It’s that simple. If every single person had their own garden, farms wouldn’t be as important. But that’s not very realistic.”

While the purpose of Family Farm Days is to serve as an educational tool, there’s certainly a celebratory piece to the event as well.

Family Farm Days will feature tractor and wagon rides, animal petting, short presentations at the Barnyard Theater, Farm Show milkshakes, free samples of Oregon Dairy milk and ice cream, hot dogs and barbecue. The event will also include vendors, farm exhibits and information from agricultural organizations like the Lancaster County 4-H Club, the Lancaster County Conservation District and the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation.

about their land and their animals. If we don’t care about our land, it’s not a sustainable business. We’re consumers too.”

Forry said that across the nation, 2% of the population is involved in production farming and that what that group produces helps sustain the other 98%.

There’s plenty to do for younger visitors to Family Farm Days.

Summer Hymn Sing series posted

The Summer Hymn Sing series will begin with an event on Sunday, June 4, at 7 p.m. The series will be held at the historic Old Leacock Presbyterian Church, located on Route 340, 1 mile west of Intercourse. Participants will choose their favorite hymns for all to sing using

the “Glory to God” hymnal and the traditional “Crowning Glory” hymnal. The 1904 Estes pump organ will be used to accompany the opening hymns.

The public is invited to attend. The series will continue on Sundays, July 2, Aug. 6, and Sept. 3.

KINZER FIRE CO. SALE

Crowds between 12,000 and 15,000 people are expected over the three days of this year’s Family Farm Days. To pull it off, the event requires hundreds of volunteers.

“They’re our neighbors,” said Forry. “A lot of them are Lancaster County residents, but they also come from neighboring counties. They come from all over Lancaster County. It’s a lot of parents and younger kids or grandparents with grandkids. It’s a

good come-and-go flow.”

Family Farm Days began in the mid-1980s as sort of an open house at a farm. But the event really took off in the 1990s when the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce’s Agriculture Committee became involved.

“It has obviously grown,” said Forry. “Now, there are definitely more activities for kids to do and more exhibits. For an event to be free to the public, sponsorships are needed to offset expenses. We get huge support from our local agriculture businesses.”

“It’s something we want to continue to offer every year,” added Forry. “We want to have more learning, but we’re not looking to grow this to 20,000 or 30,000 people. It takes a tremendous amount of people to make this happen.”

Church to host rehearsals for choir festival

St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, will host regional rehearsals for the Ocean Grove Choir Festival. A chorus including hundreds of singers will gather in the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, N.J., on Sunday, July 9, for the 69th

annual Ocean Grove Choir Festival. This service of praise to God features a variety of choral anthems conducted by guest conductors in an auditorium that seats 6,000 and features a HopeJones pipe organ. Congregational

Alumni association to host one-hour challenge

The 2023 Solanco CrossCountry and Track Alumni Association will host a onehour race and team relay under the lights on Saturday, June 10, at the Art Harrington Track Complex at Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Road, Quarryville.

Registration is open to all Solanco cross-country studentathletes, families, alumni, Lancaster-Lebanon cross-country teams, and friends of Solanco cross-country. Coaches and family members representing the visiting schools are also welcome to participate as individuals or as relay teams.

Check-in will be from 6 to 6:40 p.m. The event will feature two races - one for individuals and one for relay teams of four runners. Individuals and relay teams will attempt to log as many miles as they can during the one-hour run on the Solanco High School track. All individuals and relay teams are responsible to have their own lap counter for the event.

Other race categories include the Walk With Waggs Challenge, which will occur during the individual race. This event is for those who wish to walk at their own pace or along with former Solanco coach John Waggoner. Also featured will be the Lancaster-Lebanon League Cross-Country Team Division, featuring other Lancaster-Lebanon League crosscountry teams. There will be awards for the members of the top three boys’, girls’, and mixed high school relay teams. All registered participants will have an opportunity to pick running merchandise from the prize table throughout the evening.

Same-day registration will be accepted, but advance registration at www.solancoxc.org is encouraged by Thursday, June 1. Registration fees help fund the Coach Art Harrington and Coach Lee Rhodes Scholarships.

In the event of a severe weather event, such as thunder and lightning, the challenge will be held on Sunday, June 11. Notification of severe weather cancellation will be posted at the aforementioned website by 4 p.m. on June 10.
