Libraries Launch Early Childhood Initiative York County Libraries (YCL) recently announced details of its new early childhood initiative, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, during a press conference at Martin Library in York. The event kicked off registration for the program at library locations across York County. Libraries across the county kicked off the program with special celebrations during story times. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative is an offshoot of a national program, and YCL has put its own spin on the program to encourage York County families to read with their young children. When parents or caregivers register their children for the free program at their local library, they will receive a free 1000 Books Before Kindergarten passport to start a reading journey that aims to get children ready for school and ready for life. Staff members will snap a passport photo and add it to the child’s passport. Families will then track the books
they read, and as they reach each 100book milestone, they may bring the passport to the library to get a passport stamp recognizing the achievement. Participants will receive special reading incentives when they have read 500 books and then 1,000 books. According to YCL president Robert F. Lambert, the families that read 1,000 books will be invited to a graduation ceremony in August to celebrate their children’s success. Children may participate in the program from birth to the day they start kindergarten. There is no cost, and all that is needed to participate is a free York County Libraries card. Children signing up for the program will be the first to receive YCL’s new 1000 Books Before Kindergarten card design. Families are encouraged to introduce their children to story times and the new program and to develop a routine of reading together. Registration for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten will continue year-round. See YCL Initiative pg 4
