Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 2523 Pine Grove Road, York, will host an Autumn Harvest Tea on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. The tea will include a five-course luncheon, along with friendship tea, a harvest blend of spices with cranberry and citrus. Association Slates York Heart Walk The American Heart Association invites workplaces, friends and families from across York County to join the 2018 York Heart Walk. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15, at John Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York. Registration and festivities will begin at 9 a.m., and the walk will step off at 10:30 a.m. Activities at this year’s Heart Walk will include free CPR demonstrations and health screenings, healthy snacks, activities for children, and a pet lookalike contest. The event will culminate with a 1- to 3-mile walk around John Rudy County Park. Organizers have set a goal to raise $130,000 from the Heart Walk to support the American Heart Association. Walkers who raise a minimum amount will
receive a Heart Walk T-shirt and the opportunity to earn additional prizes. The 2018 York Heart Walk is co-chaired by Brent Doores, administrative director of the Heart and Vascular Service Line at WellSpan Health, and Dr. Paul Tolerico, cardiologist at WellSpan Health. The Heart Walk is part of the American Heart Association’s Healthy for Good movement to encourage sustainable healthy lifestyle changes. The American Heart Association is a voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The York County Conservation District (YCCD) recently held its annual awards picnic to acknowledge those who have made a difference in the local community. Honorees were as follows: Sophie Simon and staff at Dover Wastewater Treatment Plant, 2018 Watershed Stewardship Award; Mindy Waltemyer of York County Solid Waste Authority, 2018 Outstanding Environmental Educator; Lindsay Gerner
of York County Planning Commission, 2018 Outstanding Environmental Educator; Gerald Shue of Manheim Township, 2018 Dirt, Gravel, and Low-Volume Roads Cooperator; the Eric Gemmill family’s Belview Valley Farms, 2018 York County Clean Water Farm Award; and Keith and Ryan Hoover of Brook Run Farm, 2018 Conservation Farmers. Campaign Kickoff Will Focus On Mental Health United Way of York County will kick off its annual fundraising campaign with a free community event on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Central York High School, 601 Mundis Mill Road, York. When doors open at 5 p.m., attendees may visit tables offering information from the program’s panelists and other United Way partner agencies. The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. Mike Veny, a mental health speaker, will share his experiences in addressing and erasing the stigma around mental illness.
Veny is the author of “Transforming Stigma: How to Become a Mental Wellness Superhero.” Guests will also hear from a panel of local mental health experts, providing an opportunity to discuss York County’s strengths and challenges in relation to mental health. The panel will be moderated by Bev Mackereth, who has spent her career focused on working with the most vulnerable populations in York County and at the state level.
