Tuesday
We are delighted to be returning to Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre for three days of schools’ championships action, with the finals of our Notts Sports Girls Schools Tiered Championships and the Boys U18 Tier 1 finals.
The Under 14 Tier 1 Championships has a new knockout format this season and the Under 16 Tier 1 Championships also has a new format, run as mini leagues in the early stages again ensuring each team had at least three matches, with teams qualifying for the final via knockout stages. Both have Plate tournaments giving additional opportunities for more teams.
The new U16 Tier 1 format has opened up opportunities for schools participating in the Tier 2 Championships, similar to what has been in place for a number of seasons at U18 level where the Tier 1 league format continues to be successful for the highest ranked schools.
In all, and including the lower tier championships held earlier this year, 46 different teams will have taken part in girls’ national schools finals and we are proud that
the changes made to our programme, in consultation with schools, to develop a tiered structure has been successful. The many new faces here, taking their place alongside traditional qualifiers, is a testimony to that.
The boys schools’ competitions of course replicate this and we will see the culmination of the U18 Tier 1 league, played over two terms, and congratulate those four teams who have made it to this stage.
Our thanks go to all the team officials who have dedicated a lot of time to the development of each team. We know that their commitment is very much appreciated by the players and parents. Thanks also go to the umpires and officials who give their time freely to run the tournaments in a structured and fair manner. All of you are part of the thousands of people in our sport who continue to help hockey move forwards.
We thank the staff here at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre for their support in hosting days like this which we hope will be memorable for you all. They kick off a busy few months here and we hope that players here will want to return to see our international teams in Pro League action in the Summer as we prepare for the Paris Olympics.
Making a national final is a big deal. Out of all the teams in the country, you’re amongst the few who made it, so CONGRATULATIONS!
England Hockey remains committed to producing digital programmes to commemorate every national final. You can download a version of this for free from the England Hockey website to keep on your computer (or print if you can). www.englandhockey.co.uk/competitions-and-events/programmes

For the second season in a row, Repton boast the tightest defence in the competition having let in just five goals across nine games (including the quarter final) and scoring an impressive 46. As last year, they play Epsom in the semis. They have netted the fewest goals across all teams in the finals, so will need to find their shooting boots to be in with a chance.
Clifton have scored a huge 61 goals on the way to the finals, averaging 6.7 a game, wheras Surbiton are just under that at an average of 5 goals a game. The latter has conceded the most goals in the competition, so although this could be close in the scoring stakes, Surbiton will have to find a way to keep the ball out of the net at the other end.

manchester High and Wellington College have both conceded seven goals across their six games, but Manchester edge it in the goals-for department, having scored seven more than their semi-final opponents. Wellington will be on a high though from netting six without reply in their quarter-final, so could they be hitting form at the right time?
Epsom, as with their U18s, have scored the fewest goals on the way to finals averaging just over two a game in comparison to oakham’s just under four a game, but they’ve fought their way here so far. How much further can they go?

Cranleigh and Trinity have a very similar record on the way to today, so it looks like this is a good match-up in the semi-final. Trinity finished third in the East group on 10 points and Cranleigh finished second in the West group on 9 points, and there’s not much to separate the two based on statistics alone. Both of their quarter finals were relatively high scoring affairs with only a goal in it, so it’s difficult to see which way this one will go!
Whitgift and St. George’s were neck and neck in the East group, fnishing on 16 points apiece and couldn’t be separated when they faced each other, playing out a 4-4 draw. The stats, though, say that Whitgift are the team to beat... but we all know the game isn’t played on paper!

The Under 14 competition was introduced in the 2002-03 season when schools and clubs competitions were split. The Under 14 Schools Cup was a replacement for the Girls’ Under 15 Cup which previously allowed schools and clubs to compete alongside each other.
