PROGRAMME
WELCOME FROM NICK PINK, ENGLAND HOCKEY
We are delighted to be returning to Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre for the finals of our Tiered Club and Masters’ Championships.
This weekend’s 36 qualifying teams come from an initial entry of close to 700 across the 16 different competitions. The Men’s Over 40s and Women’s Over 35s lead the way with over 100 entries each and nearly all Championships show increased entry numbers compared to 2022-23. It is also good to see that each of the eight Areas has at least one representative here.
It is great that there is a mix of regular participants and some new faces, especially in the lower tier finals – we are pleased to see the tiering system for championships based on the league pyramids that are in place around the country being well received.
Masters hockey is booming in the country right now with the eight Areas introducing different competitions to sit alongside the traditional Area Tournaments and international fixtures. We wish the various England teams every success in the forthcoming Home Nations tournaments as they prepare for World Cups later this year.
We know many masters players are the bedrock of clubs, taking on committee roles and ensuring lower XI hockey can happen, supporting younger club members in the process. Finals like the ones this weekend give players their chance to play with their peers in the limelight.
Thanks must also go to the umpires and officials who give their time freely to run the finals in a structured and fair manner. All of you are part of the thousands of people in our sport who continue to help hockey move forwards.
We thank the staff here at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre for their support in hosting days like this which we hope will be memorable for you all. It’s a busy few months here at and we hope that players here will want to return to see our international teams in Pro League action later in the Summer.

SATURDAY’S PREVIEW
Women’s Over 35s Tier 2 Final Old Georgians v Surbiton Sloths
It’s Take 2 for Old Georgians in the Women’s Over 35s Tier 2 final as they return to the national stage hoping to go one better than they did last season, when they were beaten 6-3 against Pendle Forest. Their three goals came courtesy of a brace from Tanya Hall and one from Monica Younghusband, both of whom are in their side today and will be looking to right the wrongs of last season.
Their route to today’s final has seen them receive two walkovers in the early rounds, but since then, they have netted at least three goals in every game.
Surbiton Sloths arrive as champions of the London Masters Women’s Over 35 Premier Division and in the Championships, will be
brimming with confidence from their semifinal after putting eight past Telford & Wrekin without reply. Their quarter-final, however, was a much tighter affair and they had to rely on a shoot-out, which they won 6-7, to beat Wallingford. They were only narrowly knocked out of the T1 Championships in a high scoring match against Old Cranleighans in which they ended up on the wrong side of a 6-5 scoreline. They’ve scored 29 goals en route to the final so OG’s will have to be at their best at the back to stop their front-line attack.
Women’s Over 45s Tier 2 Final Herne Bay Invictas v Wycombe
Herne Bay found themselves in Tier 2 after a 5-0 defeat to Canterbury in Tier 1, but in the first round of the T2 Championships, it was them who inflicted a 5-0 defeat onto another club, putting five past Burnt Ash (Bexley)
Old Georgians are back for another go at the Women’s Over 35s T2 title
6
Reading weave their way through to victory against Epsom in last season’s final
without reply. They followed this up with another comfortable victory, beating Surbiton Sages 4-0 before securing a 3-1 victory against Cambridge City in the quarter-finals. The semis were their toughest test yet, but they edged past Rugby & East Warwickshire with a 3-2 win.
Wycombe arrive in the final as winners of the South Masters Women’s O45 Premier Division which saw them claim five victories from their six games, but in the Championships, they find themselves in Tier 2 after a 3-2 defeat to Sonning Legends in Tier 1. They’ve gone on to beat Berkhampsted & Hemel Hempstead, and Wimborne & Wayfarers before stopping Sutton Coldfield in the semi-finals from having a dual representation for their Over 35s and Over 45s here today.
Men’s Over 50s Tier 1 Final Reading v Canterbury
Reading have been the dominant force in Over 50s hockey for a number of years and are here today looking for their fourth title on the bounce. Since 2015, they have only been stopped twice in their quest for national glory with Ben Rhydding being the ones to claim the trophy in 2016 and 2018. Aside from that, it’s been Reading all the way and on their journey to today’s final, they’ve scored an impressive 37 goals whilst only conceding six, so they look set to give the 2024 title a good go!
However, Canterbury have actually gone one better in terms of goals on the way to the final with 38 to their name, and equal to Reading, have only conceded six. Canterbury last held the Over 50s T1 title in 2013 when they beat Barford Tigers and will be keen to break Reading’s grasp on the title.
Canterbury are here this weekend supporting Young Minds. Last season (22/23) they lost one of their U18 boys in very tragic circumstances which had a profound impact on the club as a whole. As a family club, they have decided to raise mental health awareness through various charities that support young people. They received an anonymous donation to sponsor their finals match day shirts, and the request was to have Young Minds on the front of their shirts. You can find out more about the charity Young Minds at www.youngminds.org.ukyou are not alone.
7 England Hockey Club Championship Finals
Men’s Over 50s Tier 2
Khalsa Leamington v Kingswinford
Kingswinford arrive here as reigning champions having overcome Shrewsbury 5-3 in last season’s final in what was, for the most part, a nervy affair for the Midlanders. They had to twice come from behind, with Shrewsbury taking a 1-0 lead. The teams exchanged quick goals with Kingswinford taking a 2-1 lead on the 33rd minute before Shrewsbury hit back seconds later to make it 2-2 and then regained their lead on the 55th minute. Kingswinford replied one minute later to make it 3-3, before pulling away to score in the 60th minute and then putting the game beyond doubt with a last gasp effort. Their goalscorers that day were Harpreet Singh, Jeff Longdon, Colin Morris, Jamit Ahmed and Amanpreet Nijaar, all of whom return today to try and retain their national title.
Looking to stop them though is Khalsa Leamington, another Midlands team who themselves were national winners last season, but in the Men’s Over 40s T1 Championships.
Stuart Colgate and Parvinder Singh, both in today’s Over 50s team, were part of the O40s that defeated Sikh Union Nottingham 4-1, with Parvinder Singh being
noteworthy for scoring with the fourth and final blow. Both of these players will be hoping to replicate the success they experienced last year, with this Over 50s team.
Women’s Over 35s Tier 1 Final Didsbury Northern v Sutton Coldfield
Didsbury Northern are also reigning champions and will be hoping to add another Midlands team to their list of victories having overcome Olton & West Warwickshire after a narrow 2-1 victory in last season’s final.
Goals on that day came from Nicky Kellett and Rhiannon Byrne-Bowles. Today’s team is mostly made up of those who were victorious last year, although Byrne-Bowles is not in the squad. Kathryn Hughes, Julie Hyndman and Sacha Hateley are all new additions to the final line-up and will hoping to use the experience of their teammates from last season’s national final.
Sutton Coldfield themselves overcame last season’s finalists, Olton & West Warwickshire, on the way to Lee Valley this year with a 1-0 win in Round 4 and since then have beaten Clifton Robinsons 7-1 and six-times
Over 35s Champions, Canterbury, 2-0, in the semi-finals. Will today be the day they claim their own title in this age group?
Didsbury did it last year. Can they do it again this year?

Men’s Over 40s Tier 2 Final Amersham & Chalfont v Solihull
We’re guaranteed a new winner’s name on the Over 40s Tier 2 trophy this season with neither team having made the final in this age category before.
Both Amersham & Chalfont and Solihull arrive here by the skin of their teeth having had to rely on a shoot-out following 2-2 and 3-3 draws respectively. Both won their shoot-outs 4-3 so will have gained some vital experience when the pressure is on if today’s final goes to the wire.
Solihull have an impressive goal-scoring record on the way to the T2 final having netted 37 times in five games at an average of 7.4 a game, whilst Amersham & Chalfont have scored 11 in four games at an average of 2.75, so on paper, it looks like Euan Spence in the Buckinghamshire side’s goal is going to have his work cut out today!
Women’s Over 55s Tier 1 Final Bournemouth & Dorset
Wanderers v Kettering
Still in its infancy as a competition, Kettering can now claim to have been in 66% of all Over 55s T1 finals! They emerged as 3-1 winners against Redland in last season’s final and in just the third year of the Over 55s trophy, make it back here with the chance to make it two out of three. No-one starred more in last season’s final than Mandy Starsmore-Young (we’ll get our coats...) as she was the hat-trick heroine for Kettering with goals in the 10th, 18th and 32nd minutes. Will she star again today?
Looking to stop them in their tracks is Bournemouth & Dorset Wanderers who, plagued with injuries in the semi-final, survived a trip to the other end of the country to derail Driffield – last season’s Over 55s T2
Champions – and secure their spot in the final. Can they claim the title from Kettering as the two go head to head today?
Women’s Over 55s Tier 2 Final Bedford v Harleston Magies
Like Kettering, Bedford have also been in 66% of national finals in this Championship and were inaugral winners in 2022 when they beat Ben Rhydding 3-0. Emma Cook, Joy Leeson and Judith Tetlow were the goalscorers in that game with the first two named in today’s team.
Harleston Magpies were knocked out of Tier 1 by Tier 1 finalists Bournemouth & Dorset Wanderers, which, hopefully, isn’t an omen for the Magpies. As a club, the Norfolk side has a lot of experience in national finals, so their Over 55s team will be hoping to add to the club’s honours board.
Women’s Over 45s Tier 1 Final Sevenoaks v St Albans
We finish Saturday with another campaign to retain a national title, with St Albans returning to Lee Valley to retain the trophy they won in a 4-0 victory over Rugby & East Warwickshire last season. Marie Jones, Suzy Clapp, Elizabeth Cleverly and Jennifer Birch were the scorers in that game and all but Suzy Clapp, who will no doubt be cheering her side on, are in today’s team.
To add a twist to the story, they will be taking on Sevenoaks who were last season’s Over 45s Tier 2 winners after beating Telford & Wrekin 3-1. A brace from Laura den Daas and a goal from Sue Acott helped them come from a goal behind in that final, a testament to the team’s resilience and something to note for St Albans. Both of last year’s goalscorer’s are in today’s final, and with so much experience on show in this final, it’s difficult to predict a winner!

SUNDAY’S PREVIEW
Men’s Over 40s Tier 1 Final
Ben Rhydding v Khalsa Leamington
We begin Sunday with another title defence and this time, it’s Khalsa Leamington who will, in fact, be going for a hat-trick of consecutive titles. They beat Sikh Union Nottingham 4-1 in last season’s final, and beat Portsmouth 4-2 the season before, so they are a four-midable force in the Over 40s!
Last year they came from a goal behind and through goals from James Tindall, Ricky Saund, David Harris and Parvinder Singh completed their 4-1 win. Ex England and GB international striker James Tindall does not feature for them this year, but it doesn’t appear to have dampened their goal-scoring ability in this season’s competition.
They have had some huge scorelines en route to the final with a 13-0 win away at Leicester in their first match – a statement of intent in the defence of their title if ever there was one – and in the semi-final, a 9-3 victory over Ipswich. With 32 goals at an average of 6.4 a game, David Snell in goal for Ben Rhydding will have to ensure that, together with his defence, they keep the goal-rush at bay.
Ben Rhydding have won through two shootouts in the past two rounds so have shown their ability at holding their nerve. Could they be the ones to knock Khalsa off the top?
Men’s Tier 3 Final
West Bridgford 2 v Stokesley
Speaking of shoot-outs, West Bridgford 2s have also had to rely on two of these
one-on-one showdowns to make it here today and in the quarter-finals, were 1-0 shoot-out winners over last season’s losing finalists in the T4 Championships, Devonport Services. However, in rounds 1 and 2, they scored a total of nine goals without reply, so it shows what they have in the goalscoring department.
Stokesley on the other hand have won all of their games by just a one-goal margin with the pick of their matches on the way to the final being a 5-6 goal-fest against Harborne 2s! What a match that sounds like! Stokesly arrive having finished in second spot in YNE North East Division 1 and will be hoping that this isn’t another occasion where they finish second place.
Men’s Tier 1 Final
Beeston v Banbury
Beeston were beaten finalists last season losing out to Old Georgians after they lost the shoot-out as a result of a 5-5 goal-fest! They’ve had a disappointing season in the league by their standards having had to compete in the lower-half of the Premier Division post Christmas, so silverware today would give them an end-of-season boost.
Having finished fifth in the Midlands Conference this season, Banbury are very much the ‘David’ in this David v Goliath battle, but, despite having played against a weakened side, they can still claim to have knocked out the title holders, Old Georgians, in the semi-finals.
Can they add another Premier Division scalp to their tally as these two sides go headto-head in the highest KO Competition in England?

Men’s Tier 2 Final
East Grinstead 2 v Leek
Leek were losing finalists in the Men’s Tier 2 Championships last season and return to Lee Valley hoping to go one better. They lost out 4-3 in a thriller of a final that saw them go agonisingly close. They came back from a 3-1 defecit with goals from Ben White and Rich Cordon, which, added to Nathan Smith’s equaliser earlier in the game, saw them drawing 3-3 with just minutes on the clock. However, just a minute after their equaliser, Tunbridge Wells struck the decisve blow. They have finished in third spot in the league this season, just as they did last season. They will be hoping, however, not to repeat the result in last year’s final.
East Grinstead as a unit are no strangers to a national final and you’ll find teams from across their club regularly fighting for national glory, and this final sees the turn of their men’s second XI. They finished in second spot in South East Men’s Division 1 West this season but will want to go a finishing place higher than that in the Championships.
Men’s Tier 4 Final Lindum 3 v Hailsham
Hailsham have already seen success this season by winning South East Men’s Division 2 which makes them ineligible for this tier next season, but before they bow out of Tier 4, they will want to take some more silverware home. They’ve seen some huge scorelines in their cup run this season, putting 12 past Havant and seven past East London, both without reply. Ironically, their toughest test so far came in Round 1 where they edged a 5-4 victory against Crawley 2s who finished in third spot in the same division as Hailsham this season.
In every game of the championships so far, Lindum 3s have scored three goals against their opposition winning 3-2 in round 1 against Leicester Westleigh, 3-2 in round 2 against Towcester, 3-0 against UEA Men’s 3 and 3-3 against London Edwardians 4s (they won 5-4 in the shoot-out)... that’s a lot of threes! In this season’s YNE Yorkshire Men’s Division 3, they finished.... fourth. Yes, we’re as disappointed as you in terms of the end of that three-for-all. There’s only one number they will be interested in for this final though. And that’s 1.
Leek celebrate a goal in last season’s final, which ultimately ended in heartbreak. Can they go one better this season?

MONDAY’S PREVIEW
Women’s Tier 4 Final
Knole Park 2 v Preston 2
Knole Park 2s, winners of the T4 Championships in 2022, have romped home in South East Women’s Division 4 Invicta League this season winning the league by a margin of 22 points.
They haven’t lost a game all season and have scored an incredible 179 goals whilst conceding only two across the entire season. The only teams in their league campaign to have breached their defence are Maidstone 3s and Dartford. The closest game they’ve had this season was in the quarter-finals of the
Championships against London Academicals 2s where they had to rely on a shoot-out to see them home. Equally, their semi-final was a relatively close affair by their standards and they edged Hartlepool and Caledonians 2-1.
They face another northern team in the final in the form of Preston 2s who just missed out on the top spot in North West Women’s Division 3 North (Central) through goal difference as they finished on equal points to Garstang 3s.
This will be a tough test for Preston and it will be interesting to see which way the tie goes.
Women’s Tier 3 Final Loughborough Students 3 v Loughborough Students 5
It’s an all-Loughborough affair in the Women’s Tier 3 Final as the 3s take on the 5s. Clearly in the hierachy of the club, you would expect the 3s to dominate this tie, especially when you look to their league campaign which has seen them lose only once across the course of the season, winning Midlands Women’s Division 2 North by a gap of 11 points. They have also already beaten their own 4s 8-0 in the league, whereas the 5s finished mid-table in Midlands Women’s Division 3 North East and in the Championships, scraped through on a shoot-out against Lancaster University 1s in the quarter-finals and Guernsey 1s in the semi-finals to get here today.
But the undeniable wonder of sport is that anything can happen in a one-off game and anything can happen in a cup final so there is always hope and sometimes, it’s better to be the underdogs!
One thing’s for sure though. The silverware will be winging its way to Loughborough University when the final whistle is blown!

Women’s Tier 1 Final Holcombe v Beeston
The Bees will be buzzing to have made their fourth final in a row – all of which they’ve won so far – and will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing league campaign that has seen them relegated from the EHL Premier Division for next season.
The beat Guildford 4-2 in the Tier 1 final last year despite going a goal behind in the 25th minute. A brace from captain Lauren Burrell restored parity and then gave them the lead before Sophie Robinson added to their total. Guildford pulled a goal back to make it 3-2, but Cerys Miller put the game to bed in the 54th minute with a goal from open play and they lifted the trophy for the third season on the bounce.
This season, they’ll be hoping to make it four, but Holcombe, who will take up one of the vacant spots in the EHL Premier Division –left by Beeston – by virtue of finising second in Women’s Division 1 South, will be full of momentum following their promotion so will be tough opponents.
Women’s Tier 2 Final Knole Park v Swindon
It’s the second outing of the day for Knole Park, but this time, it’s the 1s who will be going for gold in the Women’s Tier 2 Final when they take on Swindon.
Like their 2XI counterparts, Knole Park have won their league this season, winning South East Women’s Division 1 West by just one point, so not quite as emphatic as the 2s, but with 108 goals to their name, still a massively impressive achievement. In the semi-finals, they overcame last season’s Tier 3 Champions, the British Army and will be looking for a title of their own today.
Swindon finished their season in sixth spot in the West Women’s Premier Division, but have won every game in their Championships campaign comfortably, with a 6-2 victory over Sheffield in the semi-finals, their biggest win in any competition so far this season.
However, it’s going to be a big ask to stop the goal machine that is Knole Park, but Swindon will do their best as both teams tussle for the Tier 2 title in the final game of the weekend.
