Last month was a very busy one for the staff of our professional association, with the launch of the inaugural Engineering Wonders publication and the many other activities associated with Engineering Week. I would like to start this message by thanking Caroline Argent and her small dedicated staff, on behalf of all our members in South Australia, for their commitment and support to our profession in planning and running these activities.

Engineering Week highlights included: a number of activities with our National President Merv Lindsay FIEAust CPEng, including a discussion forum on the importance of Chartered Status and proposed changes to streamline assessment processes, site visits to engineering showcases in South Australia (the Adelaide Desalination Plant and the ASC submarine maintenance facility at Osborne), a presentation by Colonel Neil Greet FIEAust on the humanitarian engineering activities of the Australian Army, and the launch of the Engineering Wonders “Engine Room” publication by the Adelaide Advertiser. It all culminated in Science Alive! where the Division interacted with thousands of primary and secondary school children, with the assistance of Jacobs Engineering and Team BaCoN from Trinity College. Engineering was promoted heavily and indications are excellent that many left with a better idea of what engineers do.

I hope that, by now, most of you have seen the Engine Room publication, and that you would agree with me that it is a wonderful showcase of the contribution that engineers have made to South Australia in the last ten years. With nearly 200,000 copies distributed throughout businesses and households in South Australia, we hope that it will inspire our younger generation to consider a career in engineering and educate their parents and schoolteachers with examples of the fascinating and satisfying work that engineers do. If you have not got a copy, then visit the office at Level 11, 108 King William Street, Adelaide and pick up a copy.

On Tuesday 9th August 2011 Engineers Australia completed another major step in the Year of Humanitarian Engineering when it published its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which outlines our commitment to playing our role in closing the gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and the rest of the community. We join over 300 major organisations who have made similar commitments, including many leading companies in Australia. We are one of the first major professional associations to do so. As engineers, we have the ability to make a real difference for our first Australians, either in the provision of improved infrastructure, or by the training and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Engineers Australia will use its resources to facilitate a greater level of understanding of our first Australians, their culture and their current challenges and will provide opportunities to develop ongoing relationships and specific projects. Are You Attending the MechExpo 2011?

The University of Adelaide School of Mechanical Engineering's 17th annual Honours Project Exhibition, a display of over 60 exciting projects developed by the engineers of tomorrow, will be held this year from Wednesday 26th October 2011 to Thursday 27th October 2011.

This must-see event is a highlight in the science and technology calendar. A variety of projects will be exhibited ranging from an Autonomous Sailing Vessel, a magnetically levitating platform, an Automated Watering System, and a Death-defying Diwheel similar to the one in Star Wars Episode III to name only a few - all under one roof at the Adelaide Showgrounds.

Come and try your hand on EDGAR the self-balancing scooter, pit yourself against the computer to keep a pendulum inverted upright or try to get a ball in the centre of a floating table.

This is a unique opportunity to encounter engineering in practice, to learn what it really means to be an engineer and to engage with final year engineering students as they share their experiences.

The Results Are In Congratulations to South Australian retired civil engineer Peter Battye on his High Commendation in the 2011 Photo Competition, featured in the August 2011 edition of the Engineers Australia magazine.

The photo captured construction of high-rise buildings in Keppel Bay, Singapore and we recommend that any members who have not seen the wonderful photo track down their copy of the magazine.

Crunching the numbers Did you know that there are currently over 90,000 Engineers Australia Members worldwide, with great hopes for over 100,000 members before our 100 year celebrations?

Within the South Australia Division: •

372 members have obtained the esteemed recognition of the grade of Fellow

1428 members of the South Australia Division at the grade of Member or higher have obtained Chartered Status, that is over 57% of all members at a high enough grade to be considered!

640 (11%) of the South Australia Division members and over 16% of Young Engineers Australia members (those under the age of 35) are female!

•

3304 (57%) of the South Australia Division members are Young Engineers Australia members.

•

We are the third most successful Division worldwide for members obtaining Engineering Executive Status, with 13% of all members holding Engineering Executive Status residing in South Australia.

AEW 2011 a Success

Overview

The week beginning Monday 1st August 2011 was busy, exciting and eventful with Engineers Australia members, students and the general public participating in Australian Engineering Week 2011. Throughout the week there were numerous site tours hosted, including the Ian Wark Research Institute, Australian Plant Phenomics Facility, Greenfields Wetlands Salisbury, ETSA Utilities, Coopers Brewery and the Adelaide Desalination Plant. These tours highlighted the role and achievements of the engineering profession in Australia, giving attendees an on-the-job experience (and a beer if you were lucky enough to visit the Coopers Brewery). There were many other highlights during the week including:

Visiting from Canberra, Colonel Neil Greet FIEAust presented ‘Defence Support to Humanitarian Engineering’. Neil has recently retired from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in March 2011, and has served operationally in East Timor and Iraq.

Neil discussed the role that the ADF has to play regarding humanitarian activities.

Held on the rooftop of The Advertiser was the launch of ‘The Engine Room’. ‘The Engine Room’ was an excellent initiative to promote the crucial contribution that the engineering profession has made, and this was distributed via The Advertiser to nearly 200,000 businesses and households. The South Australia Division worked together with The Advertiser to develop this publication which highlights the wonders of South Australian engineering between the years 2000 – 2010.

Jennifer O’Donovan, National Careers Advisor from Engineers Australia Sydney Division, visited Adelaide and ran numerous workshops covering ‘Resumes which get read’, ‘Life After University’, ‘Migrant Engineers Workshop’, ‘Mentoring Gen X and Y’, ‘Life After University’ and ‘How to Succeed at Interviews’. These sessions assisted participants with knowledge on how to make the first steps into the engineering profession.

‘Transitions in Leadership’ was the second breakfast event hosted by the Centre for Proudly sponsored by: Engineering Leadership and Management (CELM) and Young Engineers Australia (YEA), in the lead-up to the 2012 Engineering Leadership Conference being held in Adelaide. Former Chief Executive of SA Water Anne Howe, spoke about her job progression and experiences in leadership roles. Discussions were facilitated by Managing Director of Business and Risk Solutions, Kym Williams, and this provided an opportunity for participants to ask questions and understand past transitions in Anne’s career.

Between 1st – 3rd August 2011, National President of Engineers Australia Merv Lindsay FIEAust CPEng visited the South Australia Division. During Merv’s stay, a number of exciting site tours were facilitated – this included a viewing of the HMAS Sheean Submarine at ASC. Held over lunch on Wednesday 3rd August 2011, Merv presented ‘Chartered: Changing the Culture’, discussing Chartered Status and the changes which are being debated at present. This was a very insightful conversation for those who attended.

Science Alive! was open to students and the general public between 5th – 7th August 2011. Attendees got to experience the science and engineering professions in a handson manner. Also participating on the Engineers Australia booth were Trinity College students, who showcased the models which helped them win the a number of prizes in the First Lego League (FLL), a robotics program designed to get young students excited about science and technology. Recently, these Trinity College students went to Sydney to take part in The New Inventors “Bright Sparks” competition and won first prize. Assisting with an interactive display during Science Alive! were David Ball and James Gibbon from Jacobs Engineering, showcasing software used by engineers.

Overall, Australian Engineering Week was a huge success, providing a great opportunity for the community to engage and learn more about the engineering profession.

2011 Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal Winner Engineers Australia Chartered Fellow and 2011 South Australian Engineering Excellence Awards judge Tom Gouldie FIEAust CPEng has been selected to receive the 2011 Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) DeGolyer Distinguished Service Medal. This medal is a prestigious international award by the SPE. Tom was quoted as saying, “I am of course honoured and very proud. This is the very top professional service award given annually by the worldwide SPE, recognising service to SPE, the engineering profession and the petroleum industry.”

Tom will be in the United States, Denver specifically, for the award dinner on 1st November 2011 with his mother and 900 other people, including other SPE award recipients, to collect the medal.

Thomas Gouldie is the Operations Integrity Engineer for Santos Ltd in Adelaide, Australia.

He has more than 35 years of experience in oil, gas and geothermal, beginning with Standard Oil of California in New Orleans. For most of the last 30 years he has worked in Australia as a petroleum engineer, for the past 22 years for Santos Ltd with operations, commercial and HSE accountabilities.

Tom’s SPE activities over the past 25 years include serving as South Australia Section Chairperson and Chairperson of the SPE Australia/New Zealand/ Papua New Guinea Council. He was elected an SPE Distinguished Member in 2001 and received the 2006

HSE and 2008 Distinguished Service Awards.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, a Chartered Professional Engineer and certified Commercial Arbitrator in Australia, and a Professional Petroleum Engineer in Louisiana.

He chairs an industry association that manages a standard permit to work system used throughout onshore Australia.

Gouldie earned a BS degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

AECOM’s PDP Program Obtains Results Nicola Jones MIEAust CPEng recently received her Chartered Status and NPER certificates from AECOM's Philip Verco RPEQ FIEAust CPEng, Technical Director - Market Sector Leader ANZ - Civil & Municipal Infrastructure, at a presentation on 3rd August 2011.

Philip went on to say "Nicola joined AECOM in January 2005. During her relatively young career, Nicola has had broad project exposure and leadership opportunities.

She is recognised as an excellent stormwater design engineer for significant high profile projects, and has diversified her engineering exposure over a whole range of projects including land development.

“She has been assistant road design manager for the Port Wakefield Road Upgrade and Northern Expressway projects, along with leading the stormwater engineering for them. She has also been involved in a whole range of other civil engineering projects, and in fact has led some smaller projects herself.

“Nicola has always worked beyond her normal engineering activities, having been involved at various times in being a coordinator for the AECOM Young Professionals group, a presenter at Careers Fairs held at the 3 Universities, and a guide and coach for the incoming graduates, tertiary work experience and high

school work experience students at AECOM. “Nicola showed significant potential and was nominated to participate in the Young Business Leader (YBL) SA Program 2005/2006. This was an intensive 10-month program for young people from a large range of businesses, coordinated by the Royal Society for the Blind (RSB). It involved the participants undertaking business leadership training (Certificate IV), project activities, as well as fund-raising activities for the RSB. She raised over $6000 for that cause."

Judges Profile In this September edition of Engineering South Australia we continue to profile judges who were involved in assessing entries for the 2011 South Australian Engineering Excellence Awards.

We have been providing the profiles of many of the judges assisting with this process over several editions to introduce them to the South Australia Division and to acknowledge their contribution.

Jerome Argue MIEAust CPEng Why did you decide to become an engineer?

Unfortunately it runs in the family like wooden legs!

No real decision, it was something always in the background.

What do you like the most about the engineering profession?

The ability to make a tangible difference – I am still idealistic enough to believe that we can leave the place better than how we found it.

What project(s) are you working on now?

A range of projects that have stemmed from the recent deluges that the state has been experiencing – it’s amazing how quickly a drought has turned to flood and the extent of damage that has caused.

What do you see as one of the biggest issues facing the engineering profession?

The current, and impending skills shortage, particularly in South Australia, where the exploration boom turning into a mining boom will tax our capacity to the limit and beyond.

What are your hobbies?

Cycling, sailing and getting away to our river shack at Clayton.

I’m pretty happy with the projects that I’ve been able to be involved with, but if pushed, I’d say that the Taj Mahal at Agra would have been fun to have worked on.

What is your motto?

Without wanting to sound too sanctimonious, I’ve always liked “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.

Who would you most like to meet?

Funnily enough I’m really looking forward to meeting my grandchildren, but as my daughters are only 16 and 14, that’s a way off!

What advice would you provide to someone interested in becoming an engineer?

What are your hobbies?

Fred is 73 years old and has worked for 10 years on engines at DSTO, followed by 23 years as an academic with a lot of industry experience during study leaves and consultancies. He has spent more than 10 years as a part time consultant to the South Australian Centre for Manufacturing and never tires of exposing the importance of design in all engineering activity.

Why did you decide to become an engineer?

It is in the family with my grandfather being a blacksmith and both my father and uncle being mechanics.

What do you like the most about the engineering profession?

The challenge which is provided by each new problem and the satisfaction when you see a solution.

What project(s) are you working on now?

What advice would you provide to someone interested in becoming an engineer?

Get as much diverse experience as you can and always be prepared to listen to other opinion.

What do you think you will be doing five years from now?

Be fully retired If you could have worked on any engineering project, throughout history, what would you choose?

I retired as Associate Prof in Mechanical Engineering in 1996 and have since been a consultant mostly as an expert witness for legal cases such as the Whyalla airline crash and the show rides including the collapse of the spindragon.

I have just read a book published by Rolls Royce called The Jet Engine. I wish I could be involved in making the Trent engines of nearly 100,000lb of thrust. It is a marvel of design and manufacturing.

What do you see as one of the biggest issues facing the engineering profession?

Think before you act and try to get it right the first time.

It seems to me that we have good solutions to many of the pressing problems such as energy generation and water use but we can’t make progress in convincing the politicians and the community of the sensible approach.

Who would you most like to meet?

What is your motto?
