“By engaging the local supply chain, the scheme will create important local employment and training opportunities, and once complete the whole community will benefit from the improved public realm. I look forward to seeing the project progress over the coming months,” she continued.

Work on the public realm and building shell are due to be completed by Christmas 2018 to allow interior fit-out work to take place. It is expected that the development will open to the public next Easter.

“We are incredibly proud to hand over the completed building, at the start of the new academic year to the Pines’ first cohort of pupils. We are confident that the new facilities will not only support the Red Lodge community with its immediate requirements, but create a legacy that will be of benefit for generations to come,” he added.

LUXURY HOUSE BUILDER WINS PRESTIGIOUS YORKSHIRE AWARD FOR BEST RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPER OF THE YEAR 2018 Yorkshire-based luxury house builder Duchy Homes has won the prestigious title of ‘Best Residential Developer of the Year 2018’ at the Yorkshire Residential Property Awards last week. Celebrated for their commitment to delivering ‘excellence as standard’ across all their exclusive new housing developments, Duchy Homes was confirmed as having “nailed it” by the event organiser Variety, the Children’s Charity, at the black-tie awards ceremony on Thursday 11th October 2018. As well as Duchy Homes’ consistently high standards in building craftsmanship, including its insistence in premium interior specifications, a superb customer care ethos and strong home buying support services, the house builder has significantly invested in the customer experience over the last 12 months with new tools such as an enhanced website, personalised Handover Manuals, and an online portal to guide clients from the point of reservation through to aftercare – all of which is testimony to Duchy Homes being deserving of the title ‘Best Residential Developer’. The annual property event, held at Bowcliffe Hall with Gethin Jones as guest presenter, proved that the region’s property industry is rich in talent, innovation and

expertise. The best in the business were rewarded and the awards evening also helped Variety, the children’s charity, raise funds for its work with disabled and disadvantaged children in Yorkshire. Jim Cropper, Managing Director of Duchy Homes’ Yorkshire Division, comments: “We are very proud to have won this award! When we established Duchy Homes just seven years ago, everyone in the company agreed that we would only ever build high-quality houses in great locations and it’s fantastic to be celebrated at these awards for having achieved this and being recognised as the best! It really reflects our attention-to-detail and the value we place in our customers’ satisfaction, and it’s a great reward for the hard work and dedication everyone at Duchy Homes delivers.” Duchy Homes has already provided high-quality homes to some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful settings, from idyllic market towns and quaint villages such as Penistone, Sprotbrough, Chesterfield and Braithwell, to locations rich in history and prestige such as Wetherby. Continuing to build homes of which buyers and the local communities

Fire Protection For Steel Reaches New Levels “This is game-changing technology and allows for transport of steelwork within hours as compared to days currently for conventional water-based, solvent-based and epoxy-based products. “Projects carried out using the original FX6000 product found vastly reduced damage on shop-painted steelwork once erected. The new FX6002 retains this mechanical durability while at the same reducing the required film thickness, again reducing holistic project cost due to lower material requirements and greatly reduced site touch-up requirements.” A breakthrough in fire protection from Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings is offering a combination of durability and ultra-fast curing not previously possible. In most environments 20 years durability can be achieved with FIRETEX FX6002 intumescent coating, even without the need to apply a top coat. The most significant benefit of this new product however is the speed of curing – hard dry and handling times may be as fast as one hour. Bob Glendenning, global fire engineering manager for Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings, said: “With the substantial advances we have made in intumescent coating technology, we can offer a broader range of benefits and options than ever before whether you’re an architect, a developer or an applicator. In modern construction, speed of build is critical and this product contributes to that goal.

For in-shop applicators of intumescent fire protection, FX6002 has Volatile Organic Content (VOC) levels comparable with many of today’s water based intumescent products, it also dries to leave a smooth and aesthetically pleasing finish, worlds apart from that typically achieved with some other exterior durable products. Additionally, when looking to optimise project costs, in many scenarios FX6002 may be specified with or without both primer and top coat depending on the project and applicator’s requirements. Rigorously fire tested under the requirements of British Standards BS476 parts 20 and 21, and the ASFP Yellow Book (Edition 5), FX6002 can offer up to 120 minutes fire protection to traditional rolled steel elements and cell beams.

Innovation In South West Hotel Construction Sees Midas Hit High Point At New Holiday Inn Express A new 138-bedroom Holiday Inn Express is rapidly take shape just outside Bridgwater, Somerset, hitting its milestone topping out in just six months thanks to innovative construction techniques being used by Midas. College and Yeovil Innovation Centre for South Somerset District Council. Midas Group’s strategy is to become the contractor of choice in the areas in which it operates, by developing long-term relationships through the delivery of its vision to be leaders in customer service and performance.

The £10 million project is being built by Midas Construction, part of the Midas Group, on behalf of customer Zeal Hotels, and is believed to be the first in the South West to use a highly-efficient form of offsite and modular construction, delivering high quality finishes combined with considerably shorter build times. The new Bridgwater Holiday Inn Express is situated on Junction 24 of the M5 motorway and will be one of the biggest hotels in the area, featuring a bar and restaurant, lounge area, meeting rooms and parking for more than 60 vehicles. Due for completion in spring 2019, the hotel is being built to Holiday Inn Express group’s Generation 4 specifications and will provide accommodation for visitors to the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station and surrounding areas. The building features perimeter precast, acid-etch external finished and sandwich-insulated concrete panels, which are manufactured off site. These are craned into place and fixed to the frame of the building – also constructed using pre-cast concrete – instantly delivering a high-quality external finish and providing an internal surface ready for decorative finishes.

The windows, made by a specialist company in Bristol, are pre-glazed and installed into the pre-cast panels before being delivered to site. Bathroom pods are also manufactured locally, less than 10 miles from the construction site, before being delivered for installation. Neil Lewis, Senior Project Manager at Midas Construction, said: “Off-site manufacturing isn’t new but this particular method of construction, and the standard of finishes it achieves, is a first for Midas and, we believe, the South West. “We are subscribing to modern methods of construction and the innovative use of design and build techniques to deliver a more consistent product and finish for our customer. “We’re impressed by the results and delighted to be leading the way in developing a new approach to hotel construction in the South West, which we hope will see greater take-up in the future.” The scheme adds to a list of prominent construction projects recently completed by Midas in the region; including the award-winning National College for Nuclear Southern Hub for Bridgwater & Taunton

Midas Construction has worked closely with customer Zeal Hotels throughout the project, and representatives of both companies were on hand to celebrate topping out on 25th September as Midas marked reaching the high point of the build. Tim Wheeldon, Managing Director of Zeal Hotels, said: “I am pleased this project is proceeding well, both on time and on budget. This highly efficient form of offsite and modular construction ensures a high quality of finish and we will certainly be looking to replicate this with our pipeline of additional hotel developments. “Topping out is always a milestone and we are pleased to celebrate this today with Midas Construction along with several consultants on site.” Portfolio holder for Economic Growth at Sedgemoor District Council, Cllr Anne Fraser, said: “It is exciting to see the progress being made on this important new asset for the District. It is particularly pleasing to see how many local businesses and people have already benefitted from the construction including the two apprentices taken on. We are now looking forward to the opening next year when Sedgemoor will be able to offer a wider range and choice of accommodation for people wanting to do business here or enjoy our wonderful countryside.”

Design-led sign and display specialist, Signbox launches new eshop Offering intelligently designed, off-the-shelf sign and display solutions, from Fire Exit signs, to NFC Smart Stickers to LEDilluminated restroom signs and everything in between, Signbox’s new eshop is easy to browse and offers rapid delivery on a huge range of stocked products. “We’re known for our bespoke, high-end graphic interior and external signage solutions,” says Managing Director Mark Bartlett. “But we also supply simple off-the-shelf signage for a variety of business sectors and we have been working for some time on a solution to streamline that offering and make it as accessible and efficient as possible.” “Our new eshop is SEO friendly, easy to navigate and we’re confident that the significant investment we’ve made in getting it up and running will be well worth it.” As any business owner knows – the two great challenges with getting a project like this off the ground are time and money. Finding the time to put into it amid all the day-to-day pressures and deadlines is never easy, and getting a project like this right requires a substantial financial investment as well. Key to finding the finances for the project was an R&D tax credit incentive scheme that we were made aware of through our association with FESPA. There is an explicit regulation within UK company tax law designed to ease the tax burden on businesses who are investing heavily in R&D, and two years ago we decided to explore this as an avenue to find the necessary funds to grow and adapt our business. Like any tax regulation it is a highly complex process, so we were grateful for the assistance of Kene Partners whose services we employed to walk us through this regulatory minefield and help us to maximise our business growth opportunities. “With Adam Kene and his teams’ help, over the course of the last two years, we’ve managed to save a six-figure sum off our corporation tax bill which we have been able to invest back into the business: training and up-skilling staff, purchasing a new Zund precision cutting device to automate production, a new Trotec laser and of course investing in the digital infrastructure which has made our attractive fresh, user-friendly eshop a reality. We’d encourage any business looking for growth opportunities to explore this as an option,” Bartlett concludes. “As investing in the future benefits consumers and the wider economy as well as helping individual companies to grow.” To view the Signbox eshop and take advantage of opening month special offers, please visit:

11 Refurbished Bank Facade

Powdertech (Corby) Ltd specialises in architectural powder coatings and is a market-leading supplier of high-quality powder coating solutions to the architectural, rail and marine markets. “Working on the refurbishment of older buildings can be challenging but is always satisfying” says Richard Besant, Director, Powdertech Corby, “As powder coating is the usually the final task, we are privileged to add the finishing touch to the careful restorative work of the architects and builders.” A bank situated on the seafront on Guernsey presented a particular challenge. The building façade had faced harsh environmental conditions of salt water sea-spray, sand particles and wind for many years and was looking worn and shabby. The entire facade needed to be removed in multiple phases, refurbished and re-fitted with a finish that could withstand harsh marine conditions. In addition, in order to replace each finished section in the correct place once re-coated, every piece needed to be uniquely identified. Sets of façade section could then be re-fitted across

We’ve done a bank job

the building, as easily as a painting by numbers. After unloading the container of old material, the first task for Powdertech was to permanently engrave an identification code on an unseen area of each piece. Paint, sealant, corrosion and even trapped sea water was removed from the aluminium mullion cappings, brise soleil and support arms using a combination of shot blasting, bead blasting and chemical stripping techniques. Rigorous chemical pre-treatment of the resulting bare aluminium followed as this ensures that all faces of the material have a first layer of protection. Chemical pretreatment is essential; the longevity and performance of the powder coating layer relies directly upon the integrity of the metal preparation. To maximise abrasion resistance from wind-born sand, high salinity and salt

deposits present in coastal conditions, the latest waterproof primers were used in combination with high-quality polyester powder coating layer, AkzoNobel BS 10 A 01 30% gloss. In all, a total film thickness in excess of 160 microns was applied to the façade sections. And painting by numbers back at the bank? The unique identification of each component meant that the material could be pre-packed by Powdertech into kits, sent back and re-installed into the original position on the building. Powdertech always uses high-quality architectural powders with excellent weathering properties and colour retention, guaranteeing that the bank on the seafront on Guernsey will have a fresh and bright appearance for many years.

Ecophon its Solo

Ecophon has launched the latest extensions to Ecophon Solo™, its market leading family of free hanging acoustic panels. The new additions to the already extensive product portfolio of versatile acoustic absorbers provide architects and designers with even greater choice and creative freedom.

Launched as the first acoustic cloud to the market almost ten years ago, Ecophon Solo™ is a design-friendly, free-hanging sound absorber that due to its versatility can be installed in virtually any space. The Solo range features panels in a variety of standard shapes including square, rectangular and circles while Solo Freedom allows designers to express themselves creatively with custom shapes and colours. The latest expansion of the range introduces larger sizes, integrated luminaries and new baffle designs. The innovative glass wool core used in Ecophon panels provides a lightweight, stable solution that is strong and rigid regardless of the size or shape. This makes it possible for Ecophon to produce uniquely large panels. This is seen in the newly launched 3000x1200 mm rectangle - the largest on the market - and the 2400 x 600 thin rectangle. Ecophon’s Connect Profile and accessories makes installation simple and means that even the largest size panels are quick to fit on site. The expanded Solo offering now also offers a combined lighting and sound absorption option. The Ecophon Line™ luminaire, one of three normally only available in the Ecophon Focus™ range, has now been integrated in the 2400x1200 mm Solo panel. Solo Rectangle Line is delivered with the opal integrated in the panel so installation is as simple as hanging the panel, adding the included luminaire and connecting into the lighting system. Following the recent growth in the architectural popularity of baffles, Ecophon have taken their offer to the next level with Ecophon Solo™ Baffle Wave and Ecophon Solo™ Baffle ZigZag, innovative shapes designed to complement the traditional straight edge baffle. Furthermore, due to the growing recognition of the importance of adding sound absorbers to walls, Ecophon has also added Solo™ Baffle on Wall to the product family. This simple change allows an architect to continue the baffle design onto the walls, making an aesthetic statement while creating an even better sound environment.

strengthens offer For more information about the Ecophon Solo™ range visit

Ecophon recognises that often, either as part of the design or due to a lack of ceiling height, Solo may need to be installed close to the soffit. To make this simple, Ecophon has developed a new, simple, direct fixing solution which makes it possible to easily install the Solo panels as close as 50 mm from the soffit. Will Jones, Marketing Manager at Ecophon said: “The design of interior spaces has a huge effect on people’s experience, so architects need the freedom to design with solutions that not only deliver the required acoustic performance but also complement and even enhance the design of a space.

“The new products and updates to the Solo range strengthen our offer and mean we have the widest range of free-hanging absorbers on the market. Since we launched the original system it has become a favourite among architects and we are proud to still be building on what we started almost a decade ago.”

Autumn tips to prepare your garden for the winter As the weather starts to change and the nights draw in, it is time to get your garden ready for the winter months. This time of year is all about creating an easy to maintain outdoor space and to protect your outdoor space from the elements.

Garden specialists Oeco Garden Rooms have put together a handy guide to autumn gardening and how to keep your garden looking great throughout the cooler months.

Onions, shallots and garlic are perfect for planting in the colder months, and will virtually look after themselves during the winter. They have a long growing season and won’t be ready till summer, but are well worth the wait.

Cleaning and preparation

Winter hardy varieties of Spring onion and peas are also ideal to sow now, and will produce a crop ready to harvest in spring, making them great for salads.

Autumn is the time to declutter the garden, getting rid of annual plants and flowers which have died off as well as cleaning and maintaining garden structures such as greenhouses, garden sheds and wooden fences. Clean the inside and out of the greenhouse with a solution of hot water and disinfectant, removing any plant debris first, and make sure to clean the greenhouse floor and the paths leading up to it. It is worth making sure the greenhouse is well ventilated to dry it thoroughly for a few days after cleaning.

Other winter vegetables that can withstand the winter include broccoli, spring cabbages, kale and parsnips, all of which will have your veg garden producing great food for most of the year.

Another good tip is to clean out and wash any plant pots and seed trays that are not in use; this will ensure that you always have spare pots on hand for the spring sowing season. Dig up any annuals in your borders and add them to the compost heap, you can add in new winter bedding plants such as pansies or wallflowers that will create a colourful focal point to the garden in spring. Once the borders are tidy spread a layer of compost or bark chips over the top to protect the soil from the winter weather. Take advantage of any dry days to maintain fences, sheds and other garden structures. Take the time to repair any

Lawn care and maintenance Autumn is the perfect time to revitalise and prepare your lawn for the coming months. Use a rake to remove of any loose grass clipping and moss, and aerate any high traffic areas by making holes with a garden fork every 4 inches; this will help to improve drainage as the soil may have been compacted during summer use. To prepare the lawn for the colder months use autumn lawn feed; this will help to protect the grass from the winter weather and will keep the lawn looking green and healthy. If you are thinking of changing your lawn, then autumn is also a great time to lay new turf, as it gives the grass plenty of time to establish before the summer. Also make sure to trim back any evergreen borders and hedges to keep them healthy and looking nice throughout winter.

Protecting garden equipment damage and to paint or stain any wood to help protect it over the winter months and to keep the garden looking well looked after. It is also a good idea to clean any patios and paths now to stop them from becoming slippery during the winter.

Planting winter vegetables

Before storing your garden equipment away for the winter, ensure that you service any motors so that they are ready for next spring. Any blades such as shears and secateurs should be sharpened and spades, forks and other tools should be thoroughly cleaned. Rubbing oil onto any metal parts will prevent rust, and wooden handles can be protected with linseed oil to keep them in tip top condition.

Getting you vegetable patch ready for the coming year means that you will be able to harvest your vegetables even sooner, and there are plenty of varieties to choose from that are hardy enough for the colder weather. Sowing vegetables in the autumn allows you to extend the season, with many of the varieties that can be grown being ready to harvest quicker than spring plantings.

Over the last 7 years or so Capricorn Eco Timber have been supplying and developing Tiga Wood Burnt Larch, an innovative black cladding which is maintenance free, has a very low carbon imprint, is very durable and eco-friendly. It is produced from locally grown FSC certified British Larch and has a direct benefit to the economy and helps to minimise the UK trade deficit by utilising our own countries timber resources instead of importing from other countries. Tiga Wood cladding is a bespoke product made to order here at our Stafford factory and sawmill to suit the customers specification, with either a charred and oiled or charred, brushed and oiled finish.

It is coated and sealed with one coat of natural oil which acts as a base and topcoat, the number of coats are dependent on the customers aspirations regarding the longevity of the black colour or whether the cladding is preferred to gradually weather and age-gracefully over the years, if it is the latter no further coats are needed on site after delivery. The durability of the Larch itself is impressive and it will last 80 years or more in cladding form assuming the usual guidelines for fitting are followed by the installer.

Growing Market, Fresh Designs

Expect to see exhibitors and buyers in ebullient mood at the 2019 January Furniture Show (JFS) when the 4-day show opens on 20th January. Exhibitors will launch their new products at the NEC with the knowledge that 2017 was a record year of sales for the furniture and interiors market, and 2018 continued into the second part of the year in the same vein. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the retail sales of furniture and lighting grew by 2.9 percent in 2017 and passed £14 billion for the first time. It represented the fourth straight year of growth for the industry. Despite the challenges of 2018 with a heatwave, world cup fever and market complexities, the predictions are that 2018 will continue the growth pattern as more and more houses are being built and need furnishing. In 2017 the NHBC (National House Building Council) registered nearly 160,606 new homes, the highest number since 2007 and by June of this year registrations were already up by 11 percent on last year, the knock for furniture and interior furnishing sales will be huge. The exhibitors at JFS 2019 are full of positive action to meet new demand and have compelling launch plans for new collections and models. The beds and mattress sector has seen the largest sales growth recently, rising by 5 percent over last 18 months reaching over £2 billion. Silentnight, Britain’s largest bed group, will exhibit at JFS for the first time. They, along with other bed companies including Breasley, MLily, Hestia, MiBed, Vogue Beds and Highgate have all got new beds and mattresses to show. Upholstery is second behind beds in terms of performance over the past 18 months, but upholstery manufacturers too have lots of new designs to

shout about. Whitemeadow have just opened a new 4,000sqft design, development and showroom facility at its Nottinghamshire HQ and continues to develop its collaboration with Content by Terence Conran. Westbridge, Tetrad, Buoyant and Lebus are all launching new up-to-theminute designs in muted, vibrant and sophisticated fabrics and coverings at JFS. Living and dining furniture isn’t as high flying as beds and sofas in terms of increased sales, but

is in no way short of fresh ideas and new collections. Some of JFS’s best loved exhibitors, VIDA Living, Ercol, Skovby, Weimann and Gallery Direct all have new cabinet collections to introduce, and will give buyers a feast of mixed textures, unique storage solutions and plenty of 21st Century design techniques. To see all of the new collections and to be part of a growing industry visit JFS next January. Entry is free and registration is live at

The VELUX Group to acquire JET-Group from Egeria The agreement is subject to approval by German and Austrian competition authorities

VELUX A/S and Dutch investment firm Egeria have reached an agreement concerning the sale of JETGroup to the VELUX Group. The decision to acquire JET-Group, a European leader in industrial roof light systems, is in line with the VELUX Group’s growth strategy and specifically the desire to grow its business in the non-residential market for daylighting solutions. The acquisition of JETGroup is the second by the VELUX Group this year, with Wasco Products Inc., a US skylight manufacturer, announced in April. The VELUX Group has been the market leader in the residential market for roof windows for more than 75 years. The VELUX Group’s first step into the commercial (nonresidential) market was in 2012 when it launched the VELUX Modular Skylight (VMS) system. Today, the strategy is to develop a leading position in this business area through organic growth and acquisitions. “We have had a very positive dialogue with Egeria and the JET-Group. We immediately felt that the ambitions and cultures of the JET-Group and our company complement each other nicely. Through the acquisition of JET-Group, we will strengthen our foothold within the commercial market in several countries and add several new product categories to our commercial offering in Europe,” says David Briggs, CEO of the VELUX Group. The commercial market consists of two main segments: • An architectural glazing segment, which has a greater focus on

“With the acquisition of JET-Group we immediately become one of the leading players in the commercial market in Europe and will begin to merge our VMS operations with the JET-Group to build a new commercial division, which can drive further growth in this market. We also see opportunities to improve JET’s wholesale business by selling some products through the VELUX distribution network, which will also bring more business to our dealer partners. VELUX has always focused on providing daylight and fresh air to create better living and working environments, and the acquisition of JET helps us gain scale and extend our business into a whole new market segment,” says David Briggs, CEO of the VELUX Group.

design, with architects playing a significant role in selecting glass or acrylic glazing solutions, and • An industrial flat roof segment, which consists almost entirely of acrylic solutions, such as domes or continuous roof lights (CRLs). The two segments vary significantly in their target customer groups and sales processes. The VELUX VMS business has a strong presence in the architectural glazing segment while JET has a leading market position in the industrial flat roof segment. “We look forward to becoming part of the VELUX Group and we see a lot of growth potential and possibilities to strengthen our European business to the benefit of our customers and employees,” says Ralf Dahmer, CEO of JET-Group. Mark Wetzels, Partner at Egeria, is also pleased about the transaction: “I am impressed by the VELUX Group and confident this combination will be good for both companies, their employees and their offering to the market.

The acquisition must be approved by the competition authorities in Germany and Austria before it can be completed. The companies will not disclose further information about the agreement until final approval is granted. Pending approval and subject to completion of the acquisition of JET-Group, JET products will continue to be sold under the JET brand and through the existing organisation, while VELUX will continue to sell VMS products until customers are familiar with the change of ownership and a structured transition to the VELUX brand can be made and communicated to the market. Synergies are expected from developing common functions and key accounts across the two organisations, which will form the basis for a new VELUX commercial division. VELUX has been assisted in the transaction by EY Corporate Finance and Dentons and Egeria has had Houlihan Lokey and Allen & Overy as advisors.

Glazing Renovations Glazing Renovations offer many tailored preventative glazing maintenance packages to clients across the UK. Our servicing and preventative glazing maintenance covers glazed atriums, roof-lights, canopies, windows, facades and curtain wall. Our glazing maintenance packages are designed to keep the structures in a fully safe and serviceable condition year on year.

It’s proven that correct maintenance can triple the serviceable lifespan of a typical commercial glazing and window system. Any commercial glazing system will only have a limited lifespan and regular planned cleaning and maintenance of a glazing system will increase its lifespan. We see it regularly that many issues with commercial glazing systems occur because of a direct result of poor ongoing maintenance. Glazing Renovations are able to offer planned annual cleaning and maintenance programmes. Our entire range of maintenance programmes all come with a rolling, annual water ingress guarantee (subject to our T&Cs). We are able to offer nationwide glazing maintenance for windows, doors, curtain walling, atriums, canopies and rooflights etc. in a wide variety of locations, be it schools, commercial offices, shopping centres,

industrial estates and high-rise residential buildings. Our glazing servicing works include health and safety inspections, full glass and component cleaning, torque testing, weather gasket adjustment and replacement, sealant adjustment and replacement, replacement of missing or defective components, window hardware servicing and replacement. Our technical team will initially visit your site and inspect the glazed structure / building and then purpose design a maintenance and servicing package to ensure all components and glazing servicing requirements are considered correctly. Depending upon the structure, service packages are normally conducted on a bi-annual or annual basis and all packages are covered by a full guarantee for the lifespan of the contract. Annual maintenance is designed to discover potential issues early, giving our clients a peace of mind that their building insurance and any warranties are upheld and their glazing system is fully health and safety compliant. Ultimately a safe place of work for the building occupants is provided as a direct result of our annual maintenance programmes.

Glazing Renovations are a specialist commercial glazing refurbishment and renovation company operating within the construction and building management markets across the United Kingdom.

Healthcare fire safety and the Shelton Hospital tragedy Wrightstyle is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of advanced steel and aluminium glazing systems. Jane Embury, the company’s marketing director, looks at fire safety in healthcare facilities and care homes. We’re shortly to supply to a new state-of-the-art care village in Warwick that will include everything from a deluxe cinema to a spa, café and cycle track. It’s a prestigious project because the facility will specialise in the care of dementia sufferers, a distressing

condition that adds to security and safety challenges, both for staff and the building’s design. It’s also a reminder that care homes and healthcare facilities should be places of the utmost safety, and the reason why fire safety regulations are so stringent and rigorously enforced.

Fire safety in hospitals falls under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, itself under the Regulatory Reform Act 2001, and which covers virtually all public buildings. It requires fire risk assessments, fire safety policies and an operational strategy for implementing them –

Doors, Windows & Architectural Hardware 29 started deliberately, and the former was found to be suicide. Earlier this year, a 34-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for starting deliberate fires in two Kent hospitals, and who had a long history of fire raising. One person who was evacuated later died. Most importantly, the fabric of any building, but particularly a healthcare facility, needs to be robust and resistant to the spread of fire. However, after the Grenfell Tower fire, investigations found flammable cladding in several NHS hospitals, some of which still hasn’t been removed. Last June, fire chiefs warned that up to 38 hospital sites may be as dangerous as Grenfell Tower, with nine identified as at greatest risk. A major trauma unit in Oxford is still closed because of concerns over fire risks. The simple fact is that, if fire does break out, it needs to be suppressed – most commonly with a sprinkler system – and contained, which is where specialist glazing systems have an important role to play – containing the fire for up to 120 minutes: long enough for safe evacuation and for an emergency response.

including rehearsed plans for the safe evacuation of patients, staff and visitors, without reliance on external agencies. Sometimes, however, those plans need to be questioned. Last year, following the outbreak of fire at Royal Stoke University Hospital, bed gridlock was reported as staff evacuated patients, with many people instead taking refuge on the roof. Much contemporary thinking on fire safety in healthcare facilities dates back 50 years and a catastrophic fire at the Shelton Hospital psychiatric unit, near Shrewsbury in Shropshire, which caused a national outcry, brought in changes to fire safety in major institutions and improved training for staff.

The fire in February 1968 was most likely started by a discarded cigarette and killed 24 female patients, suffocated by smoke in their beds. A further 14 women were hurt. Despite much better building and fire regulations, fires in hospitals still do happen. This year, several wards at Coventry’s University Hospital were evacuated after fire broke out and, in Glasgow, fire completely destroyed a former hospital building at the old Stobhill Hospital – adjacent to an existing healthcare facility. Coroners have also criticised two recent patient fire deaths at mental health providers Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust and at Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Both fires were

At Wrightstyle, we have long UK and international experience in designing steel and aluminium systems to mitigate against fire and other security risks, in all kinds of commercial and public buildings. Most recently, we have supplied advanced systems to healthcare facilities in the UK, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan. For the Hong Kong facility, in a typhoon area, the design specifically also required high wind-loading resistance. In a hospital environment, where ambient light has an important influence on staff morale and patient recovery, glazing systems can therefore have both a functional and aesthetic purpose. Most importantly, if a fire does break out, advanced glazing systems will ensure that it’s contained at source.

30 Doors, Windows & Architectural Hardware Janisol Arte 2.0, the second-generation renovation window from steel systems specialist Schueco Jansen, is proving popular with architects because of its enhanced specification, improved performance characteristics and ability to satisfy the aesthetic concerns of local authority planners and conservation officers.

Janisol Arte renovation windows are perfect for bringing light into the remodelled interior of the recently refurbished London restaurant The German Gymnasium.

Schueco Jansen Renovation Window is the Preferred Solution Now being seen as the preferred solution for many refurbishment projects, especially those involving a listed building, elegantly ‘retro’ Janisol Arte 2.0 offers an enlarged range of profiles with slim sight-lines from 25 mm. A wider choice of glazing bead shapes – right-angled, bevelled, scotia and flat – makes it even easier to find an exact match for the steel windows being replaced. Furthermore, since laser-welded profiles can now be added to standard Arte profiles, mullion spans can be significantly increased, so enabling the Janisol Arte 2.0 window to accommodate much larger areas of fenestration.

Special new foam profiles located between the glass and the frame mean that the insulation in the Janisol Arte 2.0 window has been significantly enhanced and following the introduction of insert profiles – which also speed up fabrication times – results in drainage that is even more reliable.

Finally, as well as standard, premiumquality steel profiles, clients can opt for Janisol Arte 2.0 profiles in high-grade austenitic 1.4401 stainless steel or Corten steel, completing a specification that is thought to be unmatched by any other renovation window on the market.

In addition, because all Janisol Arte 2.0 profiles now go through the latest ZF 100 galvannealed hot-dip process, corrosion resistance has been improved and processing weldability enhanced.

Available in all the opening types commonly encountered in both pre- and post-war industrial buildings, maximum vent weights have increased to 150 kg thanks to the introduction of state-ofthe-art, 3D adjustable stainless steel hinges. Another benefit is that simpler fabrication techniques reduce manufacturing time by up to 85%, meaning that six and a half Janisol Arte 2.0 vents can be produced in the time it took to make a single vent in the previous system.

An excellent example of the slender steel glazing achieved with Janisol Arte on the Flora building in Germany.

Superior strength, lasting beauty As well as improved strength and stiffness, other benefits of SentryGlas® include: • Safety: In the event of breakage, glass fragments remain firmly bonded to the interlayer, reducing the chance for injury • Security: SentryGlas® can be used in glazing that withstands bullets, hurricane-force winds and even bomb blasts • Durability: SentryGlas® is extremely durable and resistant to clouding, even after years of exposure • Design Versatility: SentryGlas® can be used in glass manufactured flat or curved, including annealed, toughened, heat-strengthened, spandrel, wired, patterned and colour tinted glass • UV control: SentryGlas® is available with or without UV transmittance

The SentryGlas® interlayer is five times stronger and up to 100 times stiffer than conventional laminating materials. With this kind of strength the glass can be a more active structural element in the building envelope, opening up design possibilities that didn’t exist before. Equitone specified on Univ Hull’s £30m student accom

A set of new, luxurious student accommodation blocks featuring 6,500m2 fibre cement facade material have been created with the results offering a The Courtyard provides purpose-built housing for 600 students at the University of Hull’s Cottingham Road campus. The £30 million facility combines en-suite rooms along with rooftop apartments and separate lounges, games rooms and a cinema.. EQUITONE [tectiva], a through-coloured fibre cement facade material, was specified for its aesthetically pleasing, natural and modern appearance. Chosen in a variety of colours, the lighter shades were specifically used to brighten up the internal courtyard. Steve Elwen, chartered architect at GSSArchitecture, based in Harrogate, said: “We chose EQUITONE as it’s a robust and durable material that has a life expectancy of at least 50 years and its A2-s1, d0 fire classification makes it a perfect facade choice. “For this project, we were inspired by minimal and subtle Scandinavian design, which is popular for educational projects due to it being modern and on-trend, and EQUITONE [tectiva] created this aesthetic perfectly as it has a range of elegant and natural shades. The material can be cut into different shapes and sizes, which allowed us to break the panels up and create an eye-catching pattern.” The accommodation consists of five separate blocks around two courtyards. Most of the development is taken up by eight-bedroom clusters with a communal kitchen and dining space. There are also 20 deluxe rooms, 28 self-contained one-bed apartments and six wheelchair accessible flats. Steve added: “The buildings are laid out in a zig zag pattern, allowing them to make the most of natural sunlight. We used more of EQUITONE [tectiva] in colour Chalk which is lighter in shade than the two other panels, to brighten up the courtyard area, making it a more pleasant area to be in.

EQUITONE [tectiva] is a through-coloured fibre cement facade material that offers elegant shades of natural colour providing a unique aesthetic effect.

“We originally wanted to use a secret fix system to secure EQUITONE onto the building but with strict budgets we decided to opt for a face fixing, which blended in perfectly with the cladding itself, making it a great alternative when budgets are tight.”

Characterised by the finesanded lines and naturally occurring hues within the

material, these enhance the natural matt appearance, which comes to life with the effects of light and shade. All EQUITONE materials are available in a range of colours, finishes and fixing options, giving full creative scope.

Access Solution for Genesis Building Sited on 710 acres, just south of the city of Oxford, lies the Harwell campus. This site is a hotbed for innovation and science, a place where Europe’s first energy producing fission reactor is sited, and where the world’s largest prime number was discovered. Also contained within the site is the Genesis Building, which required a two floor lift to aid access for employees and visitors to the site. Ability Lifts was contacted by Total Projects Limited, for their platform lift expertise, and following consultation, they recommended their Optimum 100 platform lift. With a shaft of 1250mm x 1560mm the client had a platform size of 1120mm x 1480mm making it fully compliant with Part M of the building regulations. As the Optimum 100 is supplied with a fully self supporting shaft, just requiring a 60mm pit, the lift was able to be fitted

in just two days, inside a fire rated shaft provided by the main contractor. With a travel distance of 3.6 metres between floors, the lift doors are elegantly finished with solid white doors with a vision panel and are fire rated for 30 minutes. In addition to the fire rated doors, the lift is also fitted with a fire park facility, so if the fire alarm is activated, the lift is automatically returned to the ground floor and isolated for safety. In case of emergency the lift is also fitted with a telephone handset. With a 12 month parts and labour warranty, in addition to a 5 year warranty on the motor and gearbox, the client can look forward to many years of hassle free lift usage. How a Stiltz Homelift hel the life of cerebral palsy Domestic lifts specialist Stiltz Homelifts helped ‘transform’ the life of a homeowner suffering from cerebral palsy which enables her to move from floor to floor simply and easily at the touch of a button.

Emma Livingstone, 42, has learned to live with CP from a young age and, although it is not considered a degenerative condition by doctors, three years ago her ability to walk became extremely difficult. The stairs became a huge challenge for her and she found it difficult to even lift her leg up and over a pavement curb.

“I used to struggle down the stairs in the morning and then I would wait for my husband to come home from work before going up again so he could help me,” said Emma. She was eventually diagnosed with hip dysplasia. This meant Emma’s hip socket did not fully cover the ball portion of her upper thighbone so her hip joint was partially dislocated – a condition she was born with caused by the CP. After undergoing hip reconstruction on her right hip, she returned home and spent the majority of 2016 recovering in a makeshift bedroom in the kitchen. Then unfortunately, her left hip started to suffer from a similar problem, resulting in her having a hip replacement in April of this year. Before the operation, Emma and her husband considered downsizing to a bungalow but with three children this proved hard. In the end, the couple decided to extend their property and buy a Stiltz Homelift, which is the only freestanding domestic lift available on the market. The family had the Stiltz Trio Homelift model – which can accommodate a standard-sized wheelchair - installed in a space off the kitchen where it plugs straight into a domestic power socket from a self-contained motor with the lift travelling up ‘through the floor’ on self-supporting rails to a first-floor landing area. With no hydraulics or load bearing walls required, the Stiltz team were able to install the Trio in less than a day with a simple hole in the ceiling all that was needed for the lift to be constructed and pass through between the floors.

Images: Chris Pearsall Photography

Emma, who is still on crutches, said: “We decided to prepare in advance of my last op and looked at moving to a bungalow but it was never going to be easy finding a property that could accommodate five people and bungalows are difficult enough to find anyway. “Then when you consider the cost of stamp duty and moving costs, in the end, we decided to extend their house for more space and install the Stiltz which has transformed my life. It is not invasive, looks modern and provides me with easy access to the whole house. It is also great for transporting the washing and kids’ toys!”

Emma, 42, from London, has launched her own cerebral palsy charity for adults who she feels have been left helpless by the authorities as soon as they hit 18 years of age. Emma is concerned there is no support network nor is there access to medical services for adults with cerebral palsy. This concern has led her to setting up Adult Cerebral Palsy Hub as a registered charity alongside her physiotherapist Miriam Creeger, in order to raise awareness of adults that have the condition. A further aim of the charity is to support research and lobby for much-needed services.

The Rise of Airspace Airspace is a phrase increasingly heard in property development circles, especially in London and other large cities, where limited development space and an ever increasing demand for housing forces the solution to go upwards. By definition, airspace is the unused space on top of residential, public and commercial buildings, which developers can purchase the “airspace rights” for from local councils, housing associations and private freehold property owners, for the construction of apartments. The primary benefit is that it is allowing architects and investors to plan developments in areas, which appear to have reached saturation point, and where no further development land is available. It is giving people the option to choose to live in the areas that they actually want to. From an environmental perspective, it also means less need for greenbelt land to be sacrificed to satisfy the demand for new homes. “There’s an estimated £54 billion worth of roof space in London,” says Haroon Bhatti, investment director of London-based development firm Apex Housing Group. A report produced by his company, calculated that rooftops could provide the space for 180,000 extra homes across London, and this is without even taking into account the amount of space that is above commercial buildings, such as supermarkets and warehouses.

From a practical perspective, developing airspace is more complex than traditional forms of construction and this is where off-site modular construction comes into its own. Notably, most modular superstructures can be installed in a number of hours, greatly reducing disruption to local residents already in situ within the building. Other benefits include the superior thermal properties of modular construction materials, especially useful when intended to be used on an exposed rooftop. Just as importantly, modular elements are more lightweight, therefore reducing load on an existing structure. With a considered design approach, they can become striking enhancements to the original building. Roofs for conversion are often higher than surrounding structures, with the potential for terraces offering commanding views. As a result, they can be ideal for the creation of penthouses, catering for the high-end market, which in turn offers developers a higher return

to meticulous standards, boasting contemporary design and a high specification throughout. Our experience in airspace extends beyond residential, with the renovation and extension of an hotel in South London for our client Holiday Inn Express, which included the creation of a fifth storey; adding a further 24 bedrooms. Clearly airspace is something that we will continue to see on the rise, with more industrious and creative solutions becoming increasingly available as design, materials and the environmental needs of people continue to evolve.

on investment. This is a good thing, considering that building into airspace is more expensive than building at ground level, so rooftop development works in locations with high density and high returns. A benefit to existing residents is that part of the developer’s obligation is usually to refurbish the building’s exterior and communal areas, which can see an overall uplift in value of their own properties as a result. rpa:group was recently appointed as Lead Designer on the creation of four new apartments in London’s upmarket South West suburb of Putney. The collection of luxury one and two-bedroom apartments are specified

MARKET SURVEY SHOWS RINNAI TOPS FOR QUALITY PRODUCT IN CONTINUOUS FLOW WATER HEATING RINNAI HOT WATER – INSTANT, CONTINUOUS, LIMITLESS AND SENSIBLY ECONOMIC FOR EVERY TYPE OF COMMERCIAL SITE… Plumbing and heating engineers have reviewed and rated Rinnai continuous flow units and systems as a leader in a recent survey into hot water heating delivery systems and products, identifying the company as having ‘superior quality’ to competitor products. The survey showed respondents - all Gas Safe registered engineers - answered questions regarding overall satisfaction, brand awareness and product quality. Rinnai came top on product quality - and technical service, in particular. Over 70% of those surveyed stated they were regular customers and identified ‘strongly’ that ‘quality of products’ and no ‘call backs to site’ as being the main reasons for their views. Over 65% of respondents said that the quality of Rinnai’s product offering is ‘superior’ to the claimed market leaders with a further 85% indicating that the brand, including all elements of product range, reliability, innovation and customer service, is a genuine market leader.

Rinnai units and systems are now the number one choice for large buildings and businesses with a heavy demand for constant hot water or where high peaks of demand occur at certain times. The water handling capacity is infinite as units can be installed to ‘cascade’. The benefits for the end user are big savings on fuel over other forms of water heating solutions, with the added advantage that there is no need to give up valuable space to install a cylinder. And there are no standing losses to account for as occur with traditional stored hot water systems. The Rinnai system produces useable hot water on demand, at the turn of a tap or the push of a shower button. The relatively compact footprint of the units also means they can be housed in tight spaces and still be easily accessible for maintenance and servicing.

According to Rinnai’s Chris Goggin: “We believe our range represents the best value-for-money commercial hot water solution on the market today, and it can be delivered direct to site in one complete, easy to manage package. Its impressive energy performance ratings also make it a highly desirable development at a time when everybody is looking at decreasing energy bills and maximising energy efficiency.” The condensing process delivers 95% thermal efficiency, which translates to significant energy savings when compared

to standard on-demand water heaters. Panasonic’s CO2 Retail Refrigeration System Wins RAC Cooling Awards Panasonic was crowned winner of the Refrigeration Product of the Year with its ground-breaking CO2 Condensing Units, in addition to receiving a Highly Commended award for Cold Chain Innovation at the prestigious 2018 RAC Cooling Awards. The Judges commented “We liked the development of the inverter driven two stage rotary compressor which has allowed Panasonic to deliver a system capable of working with the high pressures demanded by CO2 refrigerant. This system provides a high degree of flexibility and can be applied to most types of convenience store type application.” Alfredos Armaos, UK Country Manager for Panasonic Heating & Cooling commented “We are honoured to win these awards and consider it a great achievement, particularly as the CO2 Condensing Units were only introduced to the UK refrigeration market earlier this year. It’s a huge accomplishment for these units to be recognised as a stand-out product in the refrigeration market.” The award success follows a series of events in 2018 for Panasonic as the company has been celebrating its 100th year of trading and 60 years in Heating and Cooling. Furthermore, several new additions to its wide range of HVAC products have been launched throughout the year. These innovations include a full switch to R32, the new hybrid VRF, the ECOi MF3 VRF units and an updated version of the air purifying technology nanoeTMX to name a few.

The RAC Cooling Industry Awards have been running for the past 24 years and considered to be one of the most authoritative awards in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. The event brought together over 600 leading industry professionals to the London Hilton Park Lane Hotel to recognise and celebrate best practice. With 19 targeted categories, the awards cover every aspect of the refrigeration and air conditioning industry, from Retail Initiative to Cold Chain Innovation / Project. Andrew Gaved, editor-in-chief of RAC Magazine said: “The fantastic showcase of technology and best practice we saw at the Awards shows that the cooling industry is continuing to thrive, whatever the politicians throw at us.” For more information on the above please do get in touch with our team via email, or telephone 01344 853182.

Green Envee Superior Artificial Planting Solutions Green Envee design, manufacture and supply high quality artificial trees and plants, artificial green wall panels, artificial turf, composite decking, garden furniture, pots, and much much more. When traditional landscaping is not practical, artificial planting solutions are the answer. Ideal for soil-less sites, interior decorating, vertical greening, roof terraces, shops, offices and sites where maintaining living plants is a problem.

Linking Interior Design to Sustainability The word Sustainability has come to be associated with saving energy and reducing waste, but it’s so much more than that. Sustainability is about making the most of spaces without damaging the environment or people. It’s about creating beautiful places to live and work where physical and mental health are supported, ideas can flow and sick days are rarely necessary.

More and more companies are discovering the benefits of greener offices. Green has long been recognised as a calming colour. And city based organisations are now learning from their country cousins that being surrounded by nature actually does help to reduce stress whilst increasing productivity. Natural foliage can be difficult to maintain indoors or where there is a lack of soil

and water. That’s where Green Envee products come into their own.

Artificial Green Wall Panels for unique and creative spaces Green Envee’s faux green wall panels are self-sustaining. They don’t use enormous amounts of water, they don’t need to be kept at an optimum

temperature. Neither do they require special lighting if they are to be used indoors. So although they help to create inspirational spaces, they don’t use precious resources. And yes, that does mean you can turn the lights off and the heating down when the room is empty.

Our artificial green wall panels, replica plants and faux grass bring the benefits of the countryside into the home and office. But without smells, insects or allergens. Maintenance is simple. Put the watering can away – you won’t need it. Instead the foliage needs an occasional flick over with a dry duster. Want to make them even better? Team up artificial green wall panels with clever lighting and one of our scented oil dispensers. Infusing a room with the healing properties of essential oils such as lavender, jasmine and gardenia will lift and energise the people in it. Imagine how that could speed up decision making in the board room.

Are fake plants sustainable? Sustainability matters to the Green Envee team. We’re very fussy about the materials and labour used in our factories. Each and every one of our products can be recycled. That’s assuming you ever get bored with them – which is unlikely. Our manufacturers make sure that all products are UV stable. They won’t fade or change colour in direct sunlight. Which is another reason why you’ll never need to recycle them. They’re also fire retardant. And being light weight and easy to install, you can move them around every once in a while to freshen up your display.

Sliding and folding door hardware manufacturer – P C Henderson – is once again delighted to donate its Rustic 80 sliding barn door hardware to the hit BBC home renovation series ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’. The company’s marketing team recently attended the ‘Big Reveal’ in North Shields, UK to welcome the family into their newly renovated home. Running for 18 years and attracting up to 15 million viewers per episode, the award winning show - presented by Nick Knowles and his team - takes on renovation projects across the UK to help well deserving families. Relying on the support and generosity of local tradespeople and suppliers - P C Henderson was more than happy to donate its hardware to the programmes most recent project.

Living in a semi-detached 1950s house in North Shields, Rachael and John Matthews have three children – the youngest of which, Evelyn, has a rare genetic condition called CHARGE syndrome. The condition means that Evelyn suffers from many associated medical conditions; she cannot sit unaided, is registered blind, requires 24 hour care and also has chronic kidney failure - requiring Evelyn to be hooked up to a dialysis machine overnight. The hit show stepped in to help the family rebuild their home and lives through a dramatic 9 day renovation. The renovation included a single story

extension at the rear of the property and a garage conversion to provide a new bedroom and separate bathroom for Evelyn. The bedroom is now big enough to accommodate vital medical equipment as well as providing a safe space for an adapted bed, hoist, dialysis machine and a sensory area. The extra space also allows for storage of Evelyn’s medical supplies which were previously kept in a purposefully built shed in the garden, which wasn’t practical.

P C Henderson’s black Rustic 80 sliding door hardware has been used in the properties hallway for access to the living room and utility room. Evelyn is unable to be left alone so the family required a downstairs area which was more spacious and open plan - P C Henderson is hoping the sliding door mechanisms have assisted in achieving this. Stephanie Lee, Marketing Manager at P C Henderson, commented “It was fantastic to attend the DIY SOS: Big Reveal today and hear firsthand how local tradespeople and suppliers

have come together to help transform the family’s home and lives. Evelyn’s mother - Rachael - explained to us that the renovation means Evelyn can now stay at home with her loving family as she has all the medical supplies and equipment around her that she needs - the North East community should be very proud”. “We’ve donated products to DIY SOS in the past but haven’t been able to attend the Big Reveal due to the families being located far away. As a North East England based company we were delighted to hear that the

programme was coming to the region and jumped at the chance to help”. It is still yet to be announced when the episode will air but will be publicised closer to the time. Available in a matt black or a stainless steel finish, P C Henderson’s Rustic 80 sliding barn door hardware is suitable for internal wooden doors weighing up to 80 kg. The hardware is ideal for period properties, barn conversions or simply for a unique feature in the home.
