Lucky seven for St Nicholas’ Church from Smith’s Caspian UV fan convectors! As part of its long awaited refurbishment, seven of Smith’s Caspian UV fan convectors have transformed the heating system of St Nicholas’ Church in Blundellsands, Merseyside. The contractor, Colin Wakefield from Wakefield and Wilson, selected Smith’s Caspians because a modern, flexible heating solution was needed to suit the requirements of the church. He specified four units for the large hall, two for the small hall and one to be installed in the reception area. The new heating system enabled each room to be heated separately. The temperature of each Caspian can be adjusted to suit the varying heat output requirements so that during the colder months, the temperature can be increased on each unit to ensure that the whole space is heated effectively. This provides the church with a much more efficient and cost-effective

solution. The church was founded on 25 September 1874 and is part of the Diocese of Liverpool. It plays host to a wide range of services for people of all ages, so ensuring that the building is warm and comfortable when in use is very important. As well as the main church building, there are two halls and a council chamber which are also hired out for clubs and events. The original heating system consisted of one boiler, which meant that in order for one room to be heated, the rest of the building had to be heated too. The temperature of the rooms could not be individually controlled, so it worked under a ‘one temperature fits all’ basis and this is a problem that regularly occurs in commercial buildings. Colin Wakefield said: “Having worked with Smith’s previously, I knew that the Caspian UV fan convectors would

be the perfect solution for this church. The Caspians’ heat outputs, efficiency and low noise make them the ideal product for a church environment.” Unlike a conventional panel radiator, the fan convector provides more even temperature spread and much faster warmth. The small fan means that the heat produced is distributed using forced, rather than natural, convection and consequently this makes it far more responsive to thermostatic controls. Smith’s Caspian range provides the perfect solution for commercial buildings. As with all Smith’s products, the Caspians come with a free fiveyear warranty for parts and labour. Farnham architectural design goes 3D Keeping up with the latest technology is a significant step for Lewis Visuals, as they have embarked on Building Information Modelling and creating Revit models for their residential clients. Their initial architectural design consultation is free for an hour when they help their client’s ideas become a reality. Lewis Visuals wants their customers to be able to watch the sunrise in the morning after they’ve had a shower in their new en-suite bathroom. Before ideas become a reality, the company can take their clients through a walk-through using Revit Architecture 3D models. They can even throw in some imaginary new furniture or a new kitchen; anything is possible using mixed reality models. Does the company have a magical wand? Nope, but they got design experience; near 100% approval of planning applications; a friendly team you can ask any question, and they might surprise you with ideas you never thought of or - even better - cost savings. Lewis Visuals have designed around 2000 homes, and love what they do. Hey, if you want to build an entirely new home, no problem – they can create that for you. Lewis Visuals love working with 3D models. When creating design options, the technicians work in Revit Architecture, and every wall, door, window, floor and ceiling is in three dimensions. Information may be added to the components. Technicians use an existing survey by drawing or model and model up the new options on top of this – walls can be ‘turned on’ or ‘turned off’ viewing in 3D. Imagine a walk through in your new lovely home, or seeing a rendering of what it will look like in your garden before built. Better yet, the builder can’t say “This does not work, go back to the architect”! When using a 3D model, it is impossible to attach a wall to a roof that does not fit, or by mistake put a window on a floor. Have you heard about BIM? It stands for Building Information Modelling, and we will come back to BIM in future blogs, in more detail. BIM means BUILDING the INFORMATION within/in/on the MODEL (the 3D model of your home for example). To build a model you need specific software – it is no longer lines on paper – and at Lewis Visuals, we use a software called Revit. This text was, in part, taken from our website and blog.

Poole Housing Partnership delivers renewable energy vision with Minus7

With decades of experience of installing numerous renewable technologies and operating over 1500 solar photovoltaic systems in Poole, Poole Housing Partnership is not messing about when it comes to leading the way in local lowcarbon, low-cost innovation. We spoke to Mike Harrison, Technical Director of Poole Housing Partnership and others about the story so far. “According to government statistics, 10% of all English households were in fuel poverty in 2014, we thought, “this is crazy”. We aimed to lead the way in massively reducing fuel poverty and carbon emissions in Poole and wanted to encourage others to do the same. That’s when we met Minus7. We started to explore their ideas of how to utilise the best of all the renewable technologies available on the market and integrate them together to provide a best in class solution.” says PHP’s Technical Director, Mike Harrison. “Energy efficiency of PHP homes is a key priority and we’re constantly looking at new ways to reduce energy bills so we started with a pilot - two new-build 3 bedroom semi-detached houses built to standard part L building regulations. Essentially we started small to test Minus7’s claims of industry-beating system performance, energy efficiency and low running costs. Minus7’s team constantly monitored the system for us as part of our service agreement, and after an annual cycle we found each house had heating bills of just £200 for the entire year - We couldn’t believe it!” Mike continues, “The theory behind Minus7 when you get into it, is mind-blowing - it just makes so much sense.”

So how does it work? “It’s a unique renewable heat, hot water and energy storage solution” says Hamish Wilson from Minus7, “The roof is made up of solar thermal tile planks that harvest energy 24/7 365 days a year down to Minus7 degrees Celsius, and then a clever energy processor allows the system to operate with minimal grid electricity to ensure low-cost low carbon energy to residents. The thermal stores enable tenants to have heating and hot water whenever they want it” Four one-bedroom homes with Minus7’s integrated technology were next on the list for Poole Housing Partnership’s newbuild scheme. Not only did this enable tenants to downsize and manage their finances better with low cost energy bills, it released larger council homes that were desperately needed by local families.

Completed ahead of schedule, the team worked hard to minimise the impact of building works on tenants. Local residents were first invited to a consultation event to review the plans and talk about the proposals. Residents were also invited to an exclusive ‘open house’ event to see inside the new “We’ve successfully proven we can eradicate homes, meet the project team and offer fuel poverty with our technology” says feedback on their experiences during Hamish Wilson from Minus7 “Having a the build. happy tenant say ‘thank you, because of you I don’t have to choose between dinner and “The continued development of affordable keeping my kids warm’ was genuinely heart- housing across Poole is extremely warming. It just brought home the reality of important. These properties provide a fuel poverty, this frightening situation that fantastic opportunity for families to move so many people in the UK are in. I must also commend who recognised the officers and contractors for their hard work importance of Minus7’s in completing these properties ahead of innovation in integrating schedule.” Said Cllr Karen Rampton, r e n e w a b l e e n e r g y Portfolio Holder for Housing and technologies, Poole Communities, Borough of Poole. Housing Partnership’s pilot was highlighted as one of the Top 60 developments in the UK by Inside Housing in 2015, and they won several other national awards alongside big brands such as Sainsburys and EDF energy in partnership with Minus7.

Cllr Xena Dion, Mayor of Poole, added: “Some of the modern features of these homes are really fantastic, and the insulation and energy efficiency will make a big difference to people’s energy bills, as well as our town’s carbon footprint. I very much hope the people moving in will enjoy

living here and wish them happiness in their new homes.” Jane Holloway, PHP Tenancy Support Officer, confirmed that “the residents we’ve helped to move are absolutely thrilled with their new homes” Whilst the newest users of Minus7 are enjoying their warm homes and low energy bills, Poole Housing Partnership is already planning their next project with Minus7, including Minus7’s latest product innovation - solar thermal roof planks with discreet embedded photovoltaic cells. “Effectively we’re creating solar-powered heat and power stations that people live in, and including storage offers the secure, clean and consistent energy that UK housing needs” says Emma, “some people have talked about something like this as a vision for what the future of renewable technology could achieve, but Minus7 clients know it’s achievable now.” Visit Minus7 at stand A162, entrance N4 at EcoBuild 2017, Excel London from the 7th – 9th March 2017 or call 01983 282844 to get a free feasibility study for your latest project.

We asked Mark McBrayne, UK Sales and Marketing Manager at F.Engel, to discuss the services provided by the Engel team in more detail: “Basically we sell the workwear you need – be it traditional, modern or specially certified, for almost any type of working environment,” he said. “Our growing success is down to our constant program of development as well as a firm conviction to stand on our tradition to never compromise on producing the highest quality products.” “As a privately owned family company we are able to offer flexible solutions and we really care about our customers’ needs. Our workwear is constantly being adapted to meet market demands, and in addition to our popular leading ranges, we can also produce bespoke items to suit clients’ requirements (which can include branding and logos of their choice). Almost all the trousers feature such useful detail as ruler-pockets, hammer straps and mobile phone pockets, whilst the leg-length can be extended an extra 4-6cm if required. Other names to look out for, each with their own unique benefits, include ‘Galaxy’ and ‘Work Zone’. Says Mark: “At F. Engel, two of our policies on which we place particular importance are that - one - we offer advice to every relevant industry on the most effective ways by which they can comfortably protect their personnel, and - two - to be in constant touch with our customers and end-users to ensure that we always design and supply the products which they need to allow them to do their work as efficiently and comfortably as possible. We are continually researching, gaining new and helpful ideas, - from the locker room, to closely examining and testing all the other practical aspects of wearing and using our garments to maximum advantage in the workplace. Our aim is always to ensure that our customers have the best possible support in any working environment.”

When asked about what the future holds for the company, Mark concluded: “We are constantly expanding and continually looking to open new markets in more countries. Ecobuild Overhauls Floorplan With Exciting New Format as Architectural Collective Assemble Bring Turner Prize Winning Art to 2017 Show • Ecobuild 2017 to transform into a City concept and bring regeneration to life • Renowned conference returns with key industry partnerships and big name speakers • Dedicated “Redefining Sustainability” zone in partnership with Green Building Councils Turner Prize-winning architects Assemble are to headline Ecobuild 2017, bringing their award winning Granby project to the show as part of an immersive new experience. During an exclusive launch event, an entirely new and exciting city-based floor plan format was also revealed for the show. Bringing the event’s theme of regeneration to life, Ecobuild 2017 will see ExCeL London transformed into an immersive ‘city’ – complete with main street, distinct destinations and special feature attractions. Central to the experience will be Regeneration Drive, a boulevard running through the middle of Ecobuild, linking different aspects of the exhibition and enabling visitors to experience the very best examples of innovation and creativity from across the built environment. Martin Hurn, Brand Director at Ecobuild, explained: “For 2017, we’re completely overhauling and innovating the Ecobuild experience. We asked our visitors what they want and need from the show, and sustainability overwhelmingly came to the top of the agenda. To deliver this, we’ve ripped up the floorplan and reinvented Ecobuild as an immersive city centred around Regeneration Drive. “Imagining the exhibition as a city allows us to deliver a unique programme focused on regeneration, in a way that is relevant and inclusive to all our exhibitors and visitors. Different aspects of construction and the built environment deserve specific focus, and each of the Ecobuild 2017’s destinations will each have something distinct and exciting to offer.” Ecobuild also announced key collaborations with Lead Partner UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC), the Construction Products Association, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). As they make their way up Regeneration Drive, attendees will be introduced to key destinations such as The Arena, City Hall, The Campus, The Gateway and The Performance Lab. The Arena will be home to the headline guest speakers, staging a range of keynote speeches from industry thought leaders and innovators across the three days. Included within the programme will be world-renowned architects and MPs from the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Construction. The UK-GBC will also be hosting daily leadership panels chaired by

their CEO, Julie Hirigoyen. The show’s sustainability hub, City Hall, will be home to the UK-GBC and World Green Building Council. Featuring two seminar theatres, this arena represents the culmination of Ecobuild’s Redefining Sustainability campaign – which seeks to create an industry-wide understanding of sustainability objectives and drives, and a clear direction for the future. Architectural collective Assemble will present its award-winning Granby Workshop project at the Campus, the show’s destination for innovative thinking and the latest technology. Visitors will be able to view and interact with a unique installation created by Assemble, telling the story behind the collective’s Turner Prize winning regeneration project. Attendees will be also able to interact with Future Materials, a gallery curated by ARCC, previewing next-generation materials and processes currently in either research or testing stage. The Gateway will allow visitors to explore national and social infrastructure projects in partnership with ICE. The Performance Lab, meanwhile, will showcase the latest in Smart Home and Smart Building technology in association with Ecobuild 2017’s building performance partner, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

Business District, international pavilions and a dedicated District Energy Town Square created in conjunction with the UK District Energy Association. The organisers are encouraging exhibitors to get involved with the immersive city theme, inviting them to create their own destinations along Regeneration Drive and across the entire event. Hurn added: “The 2017 show is shaping up to be the most impactful and exciting in recent years. There’s a real appetite within the industry to redefine and create a universal vision for what sustainability will mean in years to come, and we have revamped Ecobuild to ensure it is the perfect platform to lead this discussion. “With the support of our partners, we’re shining a spotlight on the best examples of innovation and creativity in the industry with demonstrations of new products, smart technologies and ground-breaking materials. We’re also particularly excited about the presence of an impressive collection of international exhibitors, and hearing about best practice sustainability from around the world.” Free registration is now open for visitors. CHANGE TOILET PROVISION TO INCREASE CUSTOM Venues, retail outlets could significantly increase the number of families visiting, and their length of stay, just by adapting accessible toilet facilities.

A survey by Firefly Community - a group of 20,000 families with children who have special needs - found that: • 97% of families surveyed said changing their child whilst out and about was a problem. • 86% had to leave a venue early because of poor toilet facilities • 100% suffer from back pain (from lifting their child) • 95% said either a height adjustable or adult-sized changing bench would make their life easier on days out • 99% would be more likely to visit a venue if it improved its toilet changing facilities. “The survey speaks for itself,” observes Claire Smyth, who runs Firefly’s Space to Change campaign, for wheelchair-accessible toilet facilities with a changing bench and hoist. “Provide a hoist, bench, and you open your doors to up to 14million disabled children and adults1 in the UK, and their families, who need space, a bench, and/or hoist to toilet away from home. “Without these, those families either can’t visit, or leave early so spend less with you: that includes everything from doing the weekly shop, a trip to the town or shopping centre, a family meal out, or a tourist attraction. And we know that venues that have made that change are seeing tangible benefits- Cornwall Services, for example, has reported its facility is used daily and it has seen an increase in custom and spend as a result.” Adds Robin Tuffley, marketing manager at Clos-o-Mat, supporter of the Space to Change campaign, “Even if there is no other toilet provided, venues have to at least have a unisex wheelchair-accessible toilet. Many unisex wheelchair accessible toilets are already big enough to accommodate the bench and hoist: it’s a comparatively small capital equipment spend to add them. Even if they are not already big enough, it only requires an additional 1.6m x 2m of space….” Under the Equality Act, venues to which the public have access are required to anticipate the need and make ‘reasonable adjustments’, including to the built environment, if a disabled person would otherwise be at a ‘substantial’ disadvantage.

1. Potential users of a wheelchair-accessible toilet with space, bench and hoist include: • 1.5m wheelchair users • 6.5 million people who have either bladder or bowel incontinence • .5million people with a learning disability • 1.2million people living with stroke • 62,000 amputees • 30,000 people with cerebral palsy • 13,000 people with acquired brain injuries

• 8,500 people with multiple sclerosis • 5000 people with motor neurone disease • 8,000 people with spina bifida • 120,000 people with a stoma • 3.8million adults morbidly obese • 0.8million disabled children • 8.7million people with osteoarthritis • 400,000 people with rheumatoid arthritis

Campaigners maintain having to lie a child or adult on a toilet floor to be changed because there are not suitable facilities represents that substantial disadvantage. The concept of Space To Change toilets has been developed to ensure that the personal hygiene needs of people who need changing and lifting facilities for their personal care are met when away from home, as much as possible. It builds on a Regulatory (Document M) unisex wheelchair-accessible toilet, delivering a 7.5m2+ (3m x 2.5m min) WC facility with an adult-sized changing bench and a hoist. Clos-o-Mat, Britain’s leading supplier of disabled toilet solutions at home and away, has been instrumental in developing the Space To Change toilet layout, and working with campaigners and Firefly Community to promote the concept. Firefly Community, an online special needs resource, is driving the movement, supporting campaigners and raising awareness of the need for accessible toilets that include a height adjustable changing bench and hoist. Full details of the Space To Change concept, plus technical support, CAD blocks etc, can be found at and the Firefly Community website.

New research has revealed almost 2million people have unmet accessible housing needs, giving providers an opportunity to adjust their offering to meet demand. The report*, by Habinteg and Papworth Trust, is recommending developers to review their products to deliver solutions that enable maintenance of independence in mainstream housing. Clos-o-Mat can give a single source to address prolonged independence, at least in the bathroom….. “When home adaptations are undertaken, the bathroom is the most common room in which they are needed,” explains Clos-o-Mat marketing manager Robin Tuffley. “Creating an appropriate bathroom, that includes, or can easily accommodate, certain accessibility features, from the design & build stage is therefore very relevant. “Things like level access shower, fittings that can be adjusted vertically or laterally, texture and colour, can all play a part. And under Lifetime Homes criteria, there should be an accessible toilet at entry level, bathrooms should be designed to be accessible, ideally adjacent to the main bedroom, and the structure should be of having a ceiling track hoist retro-fitted.!” Clos-o-Mat can provide comprehensive design advice, through to supply, install, commissioning and maintenance of appropriate equipment- including hoists, shower seats, support systems and the only WC unit developed specifically for disabled people, the Clos-o-Mat Palma Vita wash & dry toilet. Clos-o-Mat has a proven reputation for provision of accessible bathrooms to best practice, and has worked with Habinteg on the social housing provider’s property portfolio, to deliver personal care solutions that deliver optimum independence. Further, to help architects and planners get it right, the company has produced a white paper ‘Design Guidance & Considerations for an Accessible Bathroom/Wetroom’. The document is available for free download here.

Acoustic Fencing

GRAMM Eco-barrier noise barrier

Acoustic Fencing is fast becoming a necessity when it comes to looking for solutions for soundproofing residential and commercial projects. So how does it work? Acoustic fencing is specifically manufactured to absorb or reflect sound. Typically most companies offer a system constructed using timber, filled with mineral wool and a special sound absorptive membrane. This type of fencing system is designed to contain high levels of noise pollution. The height of the fence between the source of the noise and the surrounding areas is crucial when looking at reducing noise levels. Most barriers are 2 or 3M however, every site is different and a site visit will offer you vital guidance in specifying a fence height that will be suitable for absorbing noise pollution. With these height considerations, acoustic fencing can often be an eyesore and attempts to reduce noise pollution can have an impact on the aesthetics of the landscape. Not any more, GRAMM Barriers Systems can offer products to suit performance and aesthetics. GRAMM Barrier Systems offers traditional timber acoustic fencing but also a variety of barriers to suit a client’s tastes. We offer a complete range of noise barriers to suit any projects requirement for architects, specifiers and contractors. Materials include aluminium, acrylic, plastic, planted and ecobarriers which is explained in more depth:

Aluminium GRAMM Aluminium acoustic barriers consist of high-density mineral wool encased in aluminium panels. The panels provide a lightweight and corrosion-resistant sound-absorbing barrier. They are perforated to protect and maintain the sound absorptive capability of the fill material. Individual panels in the system can easily be removed and replaced, as they are not bolted, welded or fastened to each other, or to the support posts. Also GRAMM can offer designs/ images which can be overlaid over the noise barrier (see image)

Stunning 33 Glasshouse Street Features Under Floor Air Conditioning AET Flexible Space, leading provider of underfloor air conditioning has recently completed commissioning 33 Glasshouse Street in London after supplying to Emico early this year. The building features a Grade II Listed façade and is located in a prominent position looking over Regent Street and the Soho area of the West End. The unusually shaped building has a total area of around 52,000 sq. ft. and is currently undergoing full structural reconfiguration and refurbishment to form larger, open plan floor plates and Category-A office accommodation with a floor to ceiling height of 3.3m to be created on floors three to seven. Space saving underfloor air conditioning has been specified by Consultants WPP and Architects Buckley Grey Yeoman. With underfloor systems, fully conditioned air is fed into the plenum by zonal downflow units (CAM), which is then supplied into the workspace via fan terminal units (Fantile). The fantile units feature integrated controllers where

users can personally adjust fan speed and temperature to suit their own comfort. Systems can be configured with underfloor or high level return and can easily integrate with passive or other ventilation systems. The system specified for floors 3, 4 and 5 at 33 Glasshouse Street is a CAM-C Direct Expansion system with supply and return air distributed via the floor plenum. The Fantiles supplied are standard TU4 fan terminals with EC motors for enhanced energy efficiency. Instead of a rooftop chiller providing chilled water, the building uses Daikin Heat Pump units to maximise use of space and energy efficiency. In addition to the creation of contemporary office accommodation, the main entrance and reception area will be reconfigured and bespoke features created at selected areas; including a potential roof terrace on floor six. A floor to ceiling height of 3.3m will be achieved on floors three, four and five with the adoption of underfloor air conditioning enabling the elimination of the ceiling void and subsequently maximising the available space. The final result is fabulous commercial work space suited to corporate headquarters in a prime London location and main contractor’s McLaren are on track for BREEAM Very Good status.

Isocrete Alpha Screed

Flowcrete UK’s green flooring solutions have been utilised by a long list of high profile locations around the country thanks to the ability of these systems to combine sustainability with both functionality and longevity. The fast drying Isocrete Alpha Screed is particularly popular among developers of large-scale, high-rise and demanding construction projects thanks to the fact that large quantities of it can be quickly and easily installed. It is also one of the greenest screeds on the market, as 95% of the system’s alpha hemi-hydrate calcium sulphate binder is reclaimed from industrial by-products, minimising the amount of waste sent repair mortars of choice in the US for a long time, will ensure to landfill. that developers can easily access the right option for them. Isocrete Alpha Screed is an evolution of traditional anhydrite flowing screeds, as it has a 20% faster drying time and its laitance free finish means that sanding is not required prior to applying a coating - significantly speeding up the overall installation timescale. Floorzone

Flowcrete UK’s Managing Director, Kevin Potter, said: “We’re always looking to develop our products to ensure that the construction industry can easily source the systems required to solve what can be very complex and demanding challenges. “We constantly evaluate our finishes, screeds, subfloor components and repair materials to get the perfect balance of functionality and application practicality while limiting any environmental impact.”

Flowcrete UK has analysed its products and manufacturing processes in order to make its solutions more environmentally friendly. Quality Door Distribution PM-Mendes (International) Limited is a long-established, family owned business, originally trading in panel products, before moving into timber components and doors. Our products are now imported from the Far East and distributed to a wide range of users throughout the country. For over 20 years PM-Mendes have dealt with a carefully selected range of manufacturers with proper financial backgrounds and managements who are prepared to work to our high standards of quality. Our core belief is to do what is right and fair rather than what is expedient at the time, which also extends into our environmental beliefs. The factories that we use have always sourced their core products from managed forests, although we have since gained accreditation in PEFC, FSC and Chain of Custody, adding to our range of FSC products all the time. Both our Head Office and warehouse facilities are based in Corsham, Wiltshire, conveniently close to the M4. A combination of good location, our own fleet of vans and 7.5 tonne trucks, transport backup from selected hauliers and well-stocked warehouses means we can quickly satisfy customer demands throughout the country. As of January 2011, we opened our Northern Office, which is run by a highly experienced and competent team based in Liverpool. These two strategic geographical locations ensure that we fully understand the local economy and therefore the needs of our customers, tailoring products and prices accordingly. Our range of doors, both internal and external, are manufactured to an extremely high standard, by factories that are considered to be market leaders in providing value for money without compromising on product quality. All of our timber products are made using the preferred engineered construction. This system reduces waste, making it both environmentally sound and cost-efficient. The doors are built up using a cross-laminated procedure and then real wood veneers are applied as the top layer. This ensures maximum stability, reducing the risk of warping and bowing, whilst still allowing the beauty and warmth of a natural product to shine through. Because of this added strength, we are able to offer a 10 year guarantee from the date of delivery on the majority of our products. For more information please visit our website

Trends in Contract

Key looks and must-have Each year sees new trends in fitted kitchen design within new build housing and renovation schemes, as developers seek to meet consumer expectation for the latest looks and must-have appliances. Barry Casement, managing director at Lanzet – one of the main kitchen suppliers to the UK’s property sector, designing and supplying fitted kitchens to property developers of all sizes, explains what trends to expect in 2017.

and porcelain and also painted wood with natural woodgrains. You can adopt other complementary colours, such as navy blue and soft grey, for a softer contrast. Popular home interest web portal Houzz calls this trend “Tuxedo kitchen cabinets”, which, put simply, explains the monochromatic effect. The idea is to apply two complimentary tones, one light and one dark. The combination often denotes different areas within the kitchens, often with one hue for the island unit and another for walled units.

2. Dove Grey

“Many of the trends affecting the contract kitchen sector reflect what’s happening in retail kitchen sales. But unlike other areas of interior design, where there can be major shifts in neutral to bright colours and key new looks led by big brands like Dulux, Farrow and Ball and high street retailers. Changes in contract kitchen design and looks tend to be more subtle and longer term. “We have identified five key trends we expect to have most impact in 2017. One shade of grey, not fifty, is currently dominating when it comes to colour (those that aren’t white or cream of course) and that’s Dove Grey, a pale grey. It is frequently requested as either a high gloss or matt door and when paired with white walls and light grey flooring this is a kitchen that ticks all of the boxes in terms of being ‘on trend’ but is still a look that will offer longevity.

3. Clean lines in traditional homes A more minimalist look is in high demand for both traditional and more contemporary homes.

1. Mix and match colour combos Mirroring the retail kitchen sector, mixing two colours within a single kitchen design is big news in contract kitchens and this trend will continue apace in 2017. The main colour combinations in high demand are anthracite and white, taupe

Kitchen Design

features in 2017 The trend towards pale gloss, handless doors and drawers will continue into 2017 and all appliances are now integrated into this overall look, hidden behind doors to give a uniform look. Statement canopy hoods have made way for integrated or telescopic extractors preventing a kitchen looking cluttered and busy. Clean lined, minimalist kitchens are particularly sought-after for homes with more open plan living. Sleek in-frame solid timber doors, painted to order, are becoming the kitchen design of choice in homes at the higher end of the market, which also deliver this look. Shaker is still being specified teamed with modern handles and sleek, lighter worktops. Slab in-frame doors are also becoming popular, especially as a design combination with shaker style doors.

4. Thinner worktops moving away from laminate Laminate or granite have traditionally been the worktop of choice but solid quartz and technological innovations in granite and natural stone-effects are becoming hugely popular, especially as there’s a preference for thinner worktops; down to 12mm with quartz compared to 40mm with laminates. The bestselling solid worktop is a 20mm quartz however with some laminate suppliers now offering a 25mm square edge this is also becoming popular.

• Self-cleaning, Pyrolytic ovens are an increasingly popular choice, as are steam ovens incorporated with microwaves as a healthier and improved way of cooking and reheating food without losing moisture or nutrients. And thanks to the Great British Bake Off – slide and hide ovens are in high demand. • LED lighting within the kitchen design is also a key requirement in 2017 to reduce household expenses in new build properties and refurbishments. • And for power, we’re fitting more kitchens with chargers and ports directly inside drawers and cabinets to enable tablets and mobile phones to be charged without being left on show.

Fads To Forget So finally, having reviewed what’s trending, Barry Casement also considers the ‘fads to forget’ in 2017. He explains: “Sparkled granite is one fad to forget. Homeowners looking for quality are no longer limited to granite countertops. Instead, they’re going for quartz, marble and butcher block countertops.

5. Storage and appliances get even cleverer in 2017 Home buyers want hi tech and smarter homes, but this doesn’t mean developers are having to spend more to meet this need as high tech becomes more mainstream. • Another minimalistic trend is extraction solutions that are flush to the ceiling and remote controlled as opposed to large ceiling mounted extraction hoods hanging above a hob on a cooking island. • Banks of appliances, or as some interior designers term it ‘the cube’, is a popular way to house ovens, microwaves, coffee machines and steam ovens within a ceiling to wall scheme. • Increased energy efficiency is on the up and will continue in 2017. Combination taps are still in high demand, but not just for boiling water; these now also include a carbonated option for instant sparkling water and chilled still water.

“Short cabinets are being superseded by taller units that offer the sleek look that helps to make a small kitchen look bigger and brighter. “A third fad to forget in are the more traditional oak wood finishes.”

• Similarly appliances with unique cleaning and energy-saving properties are trending. Such a dishwashers which retain the water from the final rinse cycle then releasing during the first wash of the next load thereby reducing water consumption and energy required.

The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway. As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the

need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or

harsh chemicals enter the unit, try to stick to Eco brands and stagger washing throughout the week.

Joyner Bolt provides the perfect connection between old and new During any renovation, refurb or extension project at some point you’ll find yourself with the time consuming job of fixing old timbers to new timbers or metal beams. Traditional fixing options like coach bolts and threaded rods are slow and can be difficult to work with especially in confined spaces such as roofs and floors. And some of the resulting joints can be less than satisfactory when it comes to pleasing building control inspectors and project managers which can lead to costly and time consuming rework.

In a recent renovation project to a 19th century schoolhouse in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire M12 x 125 Joyner Bolts were used in the roof and ceiling area of the original Grand Hall and Headmaster’s Office where roof trusses and joists had collapsed due to woodworm and rot. The property owner came across Joyner Bolt when searching online for fixings that would offer high quality performance for his project. ‘I spoke to the Joyner Bolt team before I bought the product’ says the property owner ‘and I was impressed by the fact that designers Dan Hardingham and Mark Doye both had construction industry backgrounds. Their experience means that like all great products Joyner Bolt looks simple, is easy to use, but has some important user benefits designed into it.’ The builder was also impressed “I would normally use a coach bolt and star washer on this type of job but the Joyner Bolt was much easier and quicker to use saving me quite a bit of time so I will definitely use them again’

oyner Bolt spiked timber fixings take the pain out of any timber connection job no matter how complex or difficult to access because they’re specifically designed to speed up the process whilst GUARANTEEING a quality joint every time. The spiked head immediately grips the timber, allowing joints to be tightened with one hand without the head turning or pulling through. The end result is a strong, quality joint even where holes have had to be overdrilled – all of which saves time and eliminates wastage. Joyner Bolt is available in a task specific range of only 10 bolts across two wire diameters (M10 & M12) with each length (80, 115, 125, 180 and 230) corresponding to a specific common construction joint (see diagram below) making it simple to select the right bolt for the job.

Joyner Bolts were used to connect 250 year joists to new timbers in a prestigious 5 storey Georgian townhouse project in London.

In another refurbishment project in London (2x2 bedroom flats) Joyner Bolts were used for the construction of an additional floor that spanned the whole building and required the installation of 224 engineered joists secured at each end to a new secondary timber frame. In order to test the product against more traditional methods, threaded rods were used down one side and Joyner Bolts down the other. The threaded rods on side 1 had to be cut to size which took a lot of time and generated waste product and they needed two washers and two nuts per fixing. The Joyner Bolts on side 2 required only one washer and nut per fixing and produced no wastage. Overall the total material costs were broadly similar. However, when it came to time and ease of use there was no comparison between the two products. Side 2 (Joyner Bolts) was completed in only 25% of the time of Side 1 (threaded rods) generating a labour saving of nearly £500 for only one aspect of the renovation project. In addition, the Joyner Bolt side was GUARANTEED to meet building control specification which meant no chance of rework costs and zero wastage on the job.

The Revolutionary Task Specific Spiked Timber Fixing

Guarantee a perfect joint every time...

Are quick & easy to use even in tight spaces...

Joyner Bolt is the new spiked timber fixing for joining timber to timber and other materials. Designed in the UK to overcome the shortcomings of coach bolts and threaded rods, Joyner Bolt offers a range of built-in benefits which make it the timber fixing of choice for everyone through the construction chain. Speed - the captive head of Joyner Bolt grips the timber so it can be quickly and easily tightened from one side or single-handed in tight spaces. Quality - Joyner Bolt guarantees a quality joint every time eliminating any need for rework and ensuring Building Control approval. Performance - Joyner Bolt will never turn or fall out even in an overdrilled hole, saving both time and money. The flat head provides a flush finish removing any need for counter sinking when overboarding, whilst retaining fire protection properties.

Speaking about why he thinks the product has been so well received Dan Hardingham says ‘We put a lot of the time, effort and experience into designing Joyner Bolt and got a lot of user feedback as we went along which is why it’s now establishing its place as the fixing of choice on site. Today’s construction industry puts emphasis on combining speed, quality and performance and Joyner Bolt provides all of these. It’s so simple, it’s clever!’ To find out more about Joyner Bolt or to request a sample of the product go to the website or follow us on twitter at @joynerbolt

Joyner Bolt was launched in the UK at the 2015 Construction Week show. It’s been a busy year and Joyner Bolt is now stocked in Travis Perkins, IronmongeryDirect, Ridgeons and independent Builders Merchants around the country. Other national and independent stockists are soon to follow.
