Roofing’s finest celebrate at NFRC’s UK Roofing Awards 2018 Essex-based Full Metal Jacket scooped three awards, including Roof of the Year, for its work on this derelict, former Grade II listed concert hall on Ramsgate seafront. It has been renovated with a striking zinc roof to reportedly become the UK’s largest Weatherspoon’s pub. Essex-based installer, Full Metal Jacket, has scooped the coveted Roof of the Year award at the UK Roofing Awards 2018, for its work on Ramsgate’s Royal Victoria Pavilion. The company also bagged a further two awards, making it a hattrick for the zinc, copper, lead and stainless-steel specialist. Close to 800 people descended on London’s Park Plaza Westminster Bridge hotel to celebrate the great and the good of the UK roofing industry at an awards presentation ceremony and dinner, organised by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) and hosted by BBC sports and breakfast presenter, Dan Walker. Opening the event, which is now in its 11th year, the NFRC’s chief executive, James Talman, paid tribute to “the important contribution” the roofing sector makes to the construction industry, through “innovative products, design and workmanship”, commending the high standards and “commitment to quality” demonstrated by this year’s finalists. The competition covers the full spectrum of roofing disciplines, with winners chosen by a panel of experts, based on criteria including difficulty, aesthetics, problem solving, workmanship and environmental consideration. Five new categories added for 2018 included the Local Hero award, in recognition of ‘those individuals who go above and beyond to support their community’ and the Industry Choice award, which was decided by a public vote. Triple winner, Full Metal Jacket, said on Twitter: “What a day for FMJ! It’s the foundations that are important, so we appreciate our great guys that install, together with the surveyors and all the office staff that make these awards possible.” A total of £7,500 was also raised during the proceedings for charity partner, Parkinson’s UK, following a captivating speech by representative, Emma Lawton, which was met with a standing ovation.

McCarrick Construction Finishes £2.5m Sports Hall Gary Singleton is an ex-student from Framwellgate School in County Durham, who was also part of the team at McCarrick Construction that worked on the new £2.5 million sports hall at the school.
facilities, as well as a gym and two teaching suites for the new PE courses.
“When I left Framwellgate School in Durham in 1996 to start my journey apprenticeship with McCarrick Construction, I didn’t think I would be returning to the school decades later to coordinate a project like this,” explained Gary Singleton.
Gary mentioned that these types of projects are rarely straightforward. “Once we were established on site, we discovered a pumped foul main drain from the school running right through the proposed new build, which was not identified on any drawings. Our task was to divert it without closing the school and to allow construction to begin.”
The project aimed to create a modern building equipped with all the necessities that a varied sporting curriculum requires. The biggest challenge for Gary and the team was that the building was scheduled to be completed within the grounds of the academy, within a live school environment, which presented both safety concerns and logistical challenges. Moreover, the old sports hall was being used daily by the school throughout the construction work.
Due to a few changes in design, notable the addition of a huge MUGA (multi-use games area), the programme changed; therefore the team found themselves in the middle of the exam period trying to keep the noise at a minimum. Furthermore, the team had to work alongside ecologists throughout the project, as the school campus had been discovered to be a hibernation ground for great crested newts.
The new sports hall was set to be four times larger than the previous facility and it spans now 1,000 sq. m. of space. It features an 8 metre high climbing wall, basketball, netball, volleyball, badminton, indoor football, hockey and archery

be necessary if the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness dualling route passes to the north of the town. “This is just the first step for what should be a big boost for Elgin and Moray,” said John Cowe, chairman of the council’s economic development committee. “Another primary school is important and it ties in with a lot of our aspirations with the growth deal.” The integration of Findrassie into the new neighbourhood of Elgin will create a sense of place and identity from the outset. The masterplan establishes connection into the existing surrounding residential areas to ensure the development is integrated and can become part of the local community. The design also respects the existing tree planting and historical field pattern.

Celebrating 170 Years of UK Waterproofing Established in June 1848, Newton Waterproofing Systems are the oldest suppliers of waterproofing and damp proofing products to the UK construction industry, and 2018 sees them celebrate an incredible 170th year of trading. The company is still family owned and family run, and it is this family ethos and independence, coupled with their expertise and willingness to innovate that has allowed them to continually compete and grow.
Humble Beginnings In 1848 the original John Newton recognised an opportunity to supply plasterers hair and ancillary products to the construction industry, collecting his raw materials from the tanneries in Bermondsey, South London. Such was his success that he supplied high profile projects including the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament in the 1850s, and John Newton and Company Ltd went from strength to strength.
Inventing Damp Proofing With the introduction of plasterboard in the 20th century rapidly eroding demand for plasterers hair, Newton was forced to diversify. Consequently, in 1937 the company designed and introduced the UK’s first physical damp proof membrane, ‘Newtonite’. An immensely popular product, Newton sold over 5 million square metres of the innovative membrane between 1945 and 1983.

The New Generation It was during this time that Christopher Newton, great-grandson of the original John Newton, began his tenure at the family firm. From stoking the boiler in 1963, Christopher rapidly rose to Chairman in the 1970s, where he remains to this day. With Christopher at the helm, the company recognised the need to exploit new technologies and move with the times, resulting in two major developments: 1. Inventing ‘Newlath’, the first meshed damp proofing membrane that could be directly plastered onto, launched in 1984. 2. Utilising protective membranes below ground, resulting in the first Newton System 500 basement waterproofing solution in 1986, consequently installed in thousands of UK properties.

Both of these introductions were so significant that, although the component products are constantly upgraded, the concepts have remained at the heart of damp proofing and waterproofing best practice for the past 40 years.

14 What’s the problem? Male site workers in construction are three times more likely to commit suicide than the average UK male. This shocking mental health statistic is a vivid reminder of the difficulties faced by many working in the construction industry every day. Troubling data from the Office of National Statistics found that between 2011 and 2015, of the 13,232 in-work suicides recorded, those within the skilled construction and building trades made up 13.2 per cent – despite construction accounting for little over 7 per cent of the UK workforce.
Why construction? The construction industry lifestyle is undoubtedly both challenging and stressful. Long and demanding working hours, working away from home on site for weeks at a time and the lingering unease in the industry, particularly following Carillion’s recent collapse, are just some of the factors contributing to poor mental health. In a workforce that is predominantly male, specific risks associated with male mental health also need to be considered. The “tough guy” image widespread in the construction industry is very much to blame. Asking for help and opening up about emotions are just not things that come naturally to many of those working in the industry. The combination of these factors results in many suffering in silence.
Know the signs Whilst poor mental health can manifest itself differently from individual to individual, the Construction Financial Management Association has set out some useful signs to look out for that can indicate poorly managed or untreated mental health conditions: •
increased lateness, absenteeism and presenteeism (showing up to work physically, but not being able to function);
•
decreased productivity due to distraction and cognitive slowing;
•
lack of self-confidence;
•
isolation from peers;
•
agitation and increased interpersonal conflict among co-workers;
•
increased voluntary and involuntary attrition;
•
increased feelings of being overwhelmed; and
•
decreased problem solving ability.

What can employers do? The statistics as they stand are clearly unacceptable – mental health needs to be made an urgent priority by all employers in the construction industry. Emily Pearson, Head of Workplace Wellbeing at Be. The Centre for Wellbeing (a mental health charity based in Newcastle upon Tyne specialising in corporate mental health and workplace wellbeing) has provided the following steps that all employers can take to actively improve the health and wellbeing of their workforce.
1. Culture check - Undertake a culture check to establish the
culture of the workforce and where there may be particular pain points for staff due to job design and work related stress;
2. Culture change – A change in the culture surrounding
mental health needs to start at the top. Leadership teams can show commitment to creating a culture change towards mentally healthier workplaces and workforces by signing the Time to Change Pledge or by investing in a Workplace Wellbeing Strategy to create culture change in a safe and structured manner;
3. Mental health safety net – Employers should ensure
their employees have access to and are aware of support available through counselling and therapy services;
4. Up-skilling and education – Team leaders responsible
for supporting employees should have sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to spot the signs of poor mental health and to provide support and guidance;
5. Peer support – Employers should up-skill and educate
employees so they can look out for any peers who may be struggling with their mental health. Knowing how to start the conversation and knowing how to safely signpost peers to mental health services can make a huge difference at the early signs of mental health difficulty;

6. Reduce stigma – Employers need to reduce
stigma, raise awareness, change attitudes and provide knowledge to empower employees to look after their mental health and wellbeing; and
7. Embed and repeat – It is essential that employers continue to provide these interventions, services and training in order to embed culture change – not just tick the mental health box.
Commercial Factors Employers need to prioritise mental health in the workplace for commercial reasons too. Unrecognised and unsupported mental health issues can have a massive impact on a company’s revenue. According to the National Building Specification, mental health issues account for people taking almost 70 million days off sick per year – the most of any health condition – costing the UK economy between £70 billion and £100 billion a year.
What can everyone do? Established in 2016 by the Health in Construction Leadership Group with the support of the British Safety Council, Mates in Mind, aims to make sense of the options and support available to employers and individuals. As well as providing guidance for employers, it also provides useful tools for employees. But the easiest thing that we can all do is talk. If you are concerned about a colleague, ask them if they’re ok. See if they want to go for a walk or a cup of tea at lunchtime. Generally create a safe environment so they can open up to you if they need to. Even if you don’t suspect a colleague is struggling, be careful of the language you use anyway. Insensitive words or phrases can increase the stigma surrounding mental health and make it even harder for the people around you to feel like they can talk about any issues they’re facing.
Conclusion Physical health and safety is already taken extremely seriously in the construction industry however statistics suggest that the most dangerous thing on a building site is the human mind. In a time where suicide kills more people in the construction industry than falls from height, it is only right that mental health and safety is given the same level of thought, time and investment as other site hazards to ensure that the workers in the industry are truly protected. The industry has taken steps to reduce the stigma around mental health and to improve support but there is more that each and every one of us can do just by being aware of the signs and encouraging people to talk. Do not underestimate the impact you can make just by talking to someone. You could change someone’s life.

Better Gym is a new £1.8 million digital gym in the heart of Belfast and is a joint venture between the city council and social enterprise GLL. Formerly a food court, the 1,000m2 site has been transformed into an interactive technically advanced gym featuring 110 workout stations, Prama interactive flooring, a cycle studio and a free weights area. As a former retail unit, the Better Gym building required specialist solutions to ensure acoustic comfort not only for gym members, but for people occupying neighbouring buildings. Leisure facilities such as gyms generate noise and vibration from music, free weights and medicine balls, and machinery such as treadmills and spinning bikes, as well as the voices of instructors and participants. Gyms need be good quality acoustic environments, offering good speech intelligibility between instructors and members, whether exercising individually or in a group class. However, music is also considered a great motivator by those exercising, so it’s important to have a soundscape that accommodates music too.

The Orchards Wyberton, Sheltered Housing gets a Platform Lift The Orchards is a warden controlled sheltered housing establishment in Lincolnshire run by local charity Boston Mayflower. It offers a secure environment with 24 hour support available for people wanting extra support to maintain their independence as they age. The building already had an old hydraulic lift in place and Ability Lifts were contacted to offer expert advice and guidance, given the close working relationship with the charity established over several years, having previously installed lifts in other care homes in Lincolnshire for them. The Optimum 100 platform lift was recommended, as the large platform size of 1220mm x 1680mm gives maximum space for the occupants whilst still retaining a shaft size of just 1380mm x 1790mm, meaning that the existing shaft opening could be utilised. Upon approval of this solution, the lift was supplied with automatic openers and wireless remote landing call stations. This enables wheelchair users to call the lift to the landing and have the doors open automatically without being in front of the opening doors, whilst the wireless call buttons enables easy positioning of the call button without having to drill or use conduit. The lift was installed with larger one metre wide fire doors to aid access, and as the client wanted to maintain use of the lift even during a power cut, a UPS was supplied, along with the standard battery emergency lowering. The lift even has a fire park facility which drives the lift to a designated floor and parks so that it can not be used during a fire evacuation. Working with the appointed building contractors, Ability Lifts fitted the new lift in just two days, minimizing any inconvenience to the residents. Following the installation, the client added a warden control system in case of an emergency whilst using the lift. Just a few weeks later, a further lift to the same specification was installed at D’Enycourt care home in Kirton for the same client. New Approach to Building Des Required to Provide a Healthie - VELUX provides fresh thinking for fresher air – • New indoor generation spends 90% of time indoors

Living in damp and mouldy homes increases our risk of asthma by 40%, and unless we act now we risk endangering our health as a result. Research from the VELUX Group has revealed the need to rethink building design and renovation to avoid a future increase of children suffering from asthma or allergies. The Indoor Generation survey was conducted across 14 countries (including the UK), unveiling around 16,000 people’s perceptions of the way they live their lives and what contributes to their personal health. The survey unearthed an alarming misconception that the vast majority of people in Britain (62%) believe indoor air is just as polluted or cleaner than outdoor
air. It also revealed a lack of understanding about the importance of adequate natural ventilation. Dr Russell Foster, Head of the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology and the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute, University of Oxford, said: “From the year 1800 to 2000, we’ve gone from 90% of people working outside to less than 20%. In a very short space of time, we’ve gone from being an outdoor species to spending most of our time in dim, dark caves.” We know from previous research that Europeans consider the quality of their home environment to be more important than a healthy diet or being physically active, yet the new YouGov survey uncovers an alarmingly low level of knowledge of what makes a healthy home.
Jim Coates, Director at VELUX, said: “Public buildings are just as important to consider as homes. Many offices have been designed with windows which do not open, leading to ‘sick building syndrome’ where carbon dioxide and viruses remain trapped in buildings with no means of escape. And whilst there is compelling research which demonstrates the positive impact which both daylight and ventilation has on exam results, for example, there is no clear legislation to influence change for the better. “It was recognised in the legal framework for buildings, adopted on 17 April by the European Parliament, that all technical building systems shall be designed in a way so that they optimise health, wellbeing and indoor comfort. But we need to go further to promote the holistic building approach. “The health benefits of improving our indoor environment are scientifically proven, however we still have a long journey to go on in terms of making people understand that these changes are not just a ‘nice to have’. Without action we can put our health at risk.” The YouGov survey revealed that most people underestimate the amount of time they spend indoors, with a quarter of people (25%) claiming to spend just 14 hours or less inside. sign er Future reality that the majority spend over 90% of their time indoors, and often in dark, poorly ventilated buildings leading to the emergence of a so called ‘indoor generation’. Almost one in four people (23%) admitted to never going outside, spending up to 24 hours a day indoors. The Indoor Generation refers to a growing number of people who spend the vast majority of their time indoors – currently 90% of their lives – compared to previous generations. Jim continued: “What the research reveals is that we cannot ignore the health of our indoor domestic and public spaces. Given the vast amount of time which we all spend indoors, the levels of pollutants adults and children can be exposed to on a daily basis is worrying. In recent years the trend has been towards making our buildings more energy efficient, however, the unintended consequence is that we’re trapping pollution within our buildings. “The solution is really very simple, but in order to have impact there needs to be a change in mind-set when it comes to building design. For too long we’ve prioritised energy efficiency but overlooked human health factors. “We want to encourage architects and those conducting home renovations to put human and basic health needs centre stage and limit the number of people affected by living in unhealthy buildings. We believe the best way to do this is by raising awareness of the many small changes that everyone can make which can have a real impact on air quality, and ultimately health. Making such changes will have a positive impact on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as a result of improved attendance rates, both at school and at work, and fewer medical appointments.” Dr Hilary Jones GP & Health Broadcaster said: “The rapid change in our lifestyle from spending large amounts of time outdoors for work or relaxation to becoming an Indoor Generation carries
with it several risks, not least when it comes to health in dark, poorly ventilated homes. “Poor ventilation can lead to damp or mould in the home, and can trigger asthmatic symptoms – and it is worrying that the most polluted rooms tend to be the children’s – with asthma more common in younger people. “Right now, more than five million people in the UK have asthma, the majority of which are children, and more than 20% of the UK will at one time in their life have a long-term lung condition, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). “Equally we must make sure that we’re getting the light exposure that we need in order to protect our immune systems. Many of us do not realise that lack of light can affect our sleep patterns and in turn increase our risk of health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and depression. “We don’t want to alarm people – instead we want them to be aware of the impact our lifestyle choices are making and help them to make simple changes for the better. There are small steps to make the air inside your home or office healthier, such as opening windows to allow fresh air in, particularly when bathing or cooking and cleaning regularly to keep allergens – such as dust mites – in check. “And when it comes to daylight – the best tonic is to get outside and expose ourselves to natural daylight on a daily basis, if this isn’t possible then try to sit by the window when indoors. Not only will this lift your mood but it will also help you to sleep better, which leads to enhanced concentration and improved general health and immunity.”
By sharing the survey, VELUX hopes to raise awareness of the importance of designing healthy buildings that are well ventilated and enjoy both good daylight and fresh air. In the longer-term VELUX would like to urge architects and planners to prioritise ventilation and light from the very start when retrofitting or designing buildings or city planning. The top tips below can be provided as guidance to customers who are planning a renovation or new build - be it domestic or commercial - and follow the principles of the Circadian House. They should understand the importance of: •
Fresh air ventilation – the importance of airing your home three to four times a day, including the placement of windows at different heights

The importance of daylight in the home - for example re-designing the home to ensure the rooms you use the most are south facing
•
Limiting sources of damp or moisture indoors
•
Ensuring carpets are cleaned – or better still get rid of them

Walk-on rooflights installed in breathtaking San Francisco roof terrace As locations go, this private residence certainly has one of the most sought-after zip codes in San Francisco! Sitting directly across from the St Francis Yacht Club on Marina Boulevard, this luxury property now boasts a stunning multi-level 1200 square foot roof terrace, offering breathtaking waterfront views. Designed by ODS Architecture, based in the San Francisco Bay area, the roof terrace offers a glorious outdoor space, whilst the Glazing Vision Flushglaze walk-on rooflights, imported specially from the UK, and interspersed in the decking, ensure that the bedroom suite floor below is bathed in diffused daylight. Structural challenges of adding a roof terrace to this period property Built in the 1920’s in the Spanish Mission style, this 3-storey property already offered an impressive 4000 square feet of space, but the homeowner wished to extend the house further, particularly looking to unlock the potential of the unused, run-down flat roof by adding a fully-operational outdoor kitchen as well as spacious dining and living areas. A viewing platform to take advantage of the views out over the marina was also on his wish list. ODS Architecture was appointed by the homeowner in 2012 to undertake this ambitious project. Renowned for their contemporary approach to residential design, this project was, however, a new departure for the team at ODS – taking a traditional house and adding a modern twist to it. The brief to build a stylish roof terrace as well as to reconfigure the master bedroom floor posed a number of significant structural challenges. Firstly, changes to the historic façade of the property were not allowed by the State of California, plus any new construction had to be out of view of the street as much as possible. Furthermore, the close proximity of the neighbours’ houses on both sides compromised the amount of natural light entering the client’s home, and the inability to install windows because of insufficient clearance to the property line meant a regular upper floor extension in a traditional masonry sense was not going to be appropriate. Building a roof terrace, or deck, is never an easy task but at Marina Boulevard, this was going to be particularly challenging as the silver-painted rooftop was in a state of disrepair.

ODS’s innovative design for a new multi-level, multi-functional roof terrace, incorporating a modernization of the third floor of the house, demanded highly creative construction techniques. General building contractor, Jeff King & Company, working in close collaboration with ODS, re-framed the roof with new wooden supports, metal connectors and hardware to ensure that it could take the weight of the planned roof terrace. Vertical cables on the side of the house were made to fit. Large roof terraces always require careful attention to waterproofing, and at Marina Boulevard, where old and new systems needed to be finely tuned in order to create a completely waterproof envelope, a high-tech waterproof system had to be devised. Additionally, the deck was laid with durable chip-, fadeand crack-resistant porcelain tiles that could be easily removed and replaced should there be a leak, or water damage in the future. They are also fireproof, an important feature given the type of appliances installed on the roof terrace and the closeness of the neighbouring properties to either side.
Multi-level layout for roof terrace design The lower tier of the roof terrace contains the impressive outdoor kitchen, resplendent with stainless steel Viking appliances and concrete counter tops, which are a nod to the stucco plaster walls of the old house. The dining area, complete with a large dining table, is adjacent to the kitchen and on the next tier there is small bar and a fire pit for alfresco entertaining. The “crow’s nest”, the viewing platform, is reached by a glass and timber stairwell, and was created by the contractor where the original roof was sloped. This level deck, based on a pedestal system that reaches up to 24 inches, is split into 4 quadrants to ensure proper drainage and is waterproofed to protect the sitting room below, which is accessed from both the master bedroom and the main deck. This room provides a contemporary, yet intimate space in which to relax and retreat should the weather prove inclement. It can be closed off by glazed sliding doors yet it is bright and airy, and offers a quiet peaceful zone to observe the marina.
Unlocking daylight to living space below the roof terrace A key consideration, however, for the architects and contractor in the design of the roof terrace was the need to unlock the daylight to the lower bedroom & bathroom suite floor, whilst simultaneously protecting the privacy of these intimate quarters. The original roof
Glass & Glazing 39 had 4 square-shaped skylights, which had allowed for natural light to enter the living space below. As the old roof was being covered with the new roof deck, and the old skylights removed, a glazing solution was required that would guarantee a direct source of daylight, and could utilise the original skylight apertures. Additionally, the glazing had to be sufficiently robust to be walk-able so as to not compromise the structure or the practicality of the deck itself, and it had to be able cope with inclement weather conditions, including heavy rainfall. Safety too was a critical factor in the selection of the glazing – it had to be safe underfoot. After extensive research ODS specified a series of Flushglaze walk-on rooflights,manufactured in England by Glazing Vision, a highly respected and innovative glazing specialist producing highquality rooflights for the residential and commercial markets both in the UK and overseas. Unlike skylight products available in the USA, the Glazing Vision Flushglaze rooflights were designed and tested to withstand heavy foot traffic whilst maintaining watertight integrity. Architect, contractor and client all felt that these rooflights best met their exacting criteria. The Flushglaze walk-on rooflights had the advantage of being able to be installed flush with the porcelain floor tiles used on the main roof terrace, making for a perfectly flat surface. A lack of any visible internal framework meant that, crucially, these rooflights would not spoil the visual effect – on the contrary they would enhance the contemporary appearance of the roof terrace, adding a distinct wow factor.
Safety & privacy considerations For the three rooflights located on the main deck the glazing had been specifically ordered with a sandblasted finish. This would result in a more diffused light entering the bedroom suite below, but would also improve obscurity, thereby offering greater privacy too, an important factor for the client given that the roof terrace would be used frequently for entertaining guests. Additionally, the sandblasted finish provided better slip-resistance than standard glazing. Slip resistance is measured using mean Pendulum Test Values (PTV), with values of 25-35 deemed as having moderate slip risk and 36+ as a low slip risk. Glazing Vision’s sandblasted glass achieves a PTV of 50 as standard, well above the threshold of PTV 36 to be categorized as having a low-slip potential, and it was considered ideal for use at Marina Boulevard.
“Crow’s nest” at the top of the house The fourth of the Glazing Vision Flushglaze walk-on rooflights, and the largest at 67 x 34 inches, was installed on the viewing platform, and unlike the other 3 rooflights, its glazing had a fritted finish. A screen-printed frit, that included particles within the ink to create a rough texture, was applied to the glass in a unique pattern to provide 40% coverage, significantly increasing the slip resistance of the glass. Indeed, fritted glass generally achieves a PTV of 60, thus providing an even better slip resistance than the sandblasted. The generous size of the Glazing Vision Flushglaze walk-on rooflight on the viewing platform also ensured that daylight flooded the narrow walkway underneath, from which the adjacent master bedroom sitting room also benefited. Complimenting the contemporary staircase leading up from the main deck, this almost frameless rooflight stylishly combined with the IPE wood flooring to create a kind of nautical feel, a perfect environment from where to watch the Americas Cup race! Whilst this challenging project took 2 ½ years to complete, the resulting roof terrace is testament to extraordinary teamwork. Indeed, as the contractor, Jeff King & Co. explains, it was the result of the client, architect and contractor “working collaboratively to understand the design intent and to make sure that the craftsmanship realized the dream”. And, importantly for the State of California, this modern roof terrace is neither visible from the street, nor does it detract from the historic character of the neighbourhood. The success of this build earned Jeff King & Co. the 2016 Contractor of the Year award (Landscape design/outdoor living). The roof terrace design is convincing in its simplicity, and the sensitivity to colour and materiality ensures it blends seamlessly with the rest of the house, so that when walking into the living space on the master suite floor, as Alan Ohashi of ODS proudly states, “one has the feeling that nothing had really happened” above. Fire alarms and human behaviour Wrightstyle is an international glass and steel glazing company. Jane Embury, the company’s marketing director, looks at human behavior when a fire alarm sounds. We’re sometimes asked why our advanced glazing systems are designed to give protection against fire and toxic gases for up to 120 minutes. The answer, of course, is that large or complex buildings such as hospitals or tall office blocks can take a long time to evacuate and, then, protected access is needed for fire crews to extinguish the fire. But it’s not quite as simple as that, because human beings aren’t predictable. For example, a major UK retailer took part recently in a series of unannounced fire test evacuations.
Interestingly, and contrary to their training, staff didn’t always immediately start to move customers towards the exits. The majority first sought confirmation that it was a real fire alarm, which therefore delayed the evacuation.
Evacuation models In other words, human behaviour can sometimes work against the fast evacuation of a building, whose evacuation models are often based on engineering and computational tools. However, research at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), among others, demonstrates that those computer models don’t always take human reaction into consideration. After all, we’ve all been in a building when a fire alarm has sounded. Did you immediately move towards the nearest exit? Probably not. Our first instinct is not to take the alarm too seriously. We can’t see any smoke or flames. We can’t smell smoke. It must therefore be a fire test or a false alarm. Until we know for certain, we do nothing. That period is called “pre-movement time” – the period when nothing much happens. Psychologically, our brains are telling us to think logically. There is no discernible threat, the chances of it being a real fire are remote and, frankly, I’m composing a rather important email to my boss in Bradford. In most cases, therefore, a fire alarm isn’t in itself a call to action. More often, it’s a source of confusion because, even when we believe the alarm might be real, we don’t know where the threat is coming from. This also adds to a delayed evacuation because none of us wants to evacuate until we know that our escape route is safe.

Start-up time The fire alarm therefore precipitates a variety of responses. Some people will take it seriously; others will wait until they have more information. Some will seek guidance from co-workers or their superiors; some will ignore it completely. It’s estimated that as much as two-thirds of the time it takes people to exit a building after an alarm is start-up time – time wasted in looking for more information. The most tragic example was 9/11, when fewer than 9% of the occupants of the World Trade Center towers immediately evacuated after the alarms sounded. The average “start up” time before people began to move to the exits was between five and eight minutes. Others didn’t start to evacuate for up to 40 minutes. And then there’s “exit choice behavior” which computational models can also struggle with because, again, human nature comes into play. We don’t always exit a building by designated
routes. We’ll exit a building by the route we’re familiar with, even it’s a longer journey – for example, the route by which we arrive at our desk in the morning. But behavior isn’t just about us as individuals. Groups of people can influence one another. People want to evacuate alongside colleagues, slowing evacuation down to the speed of the slowest person. In a shopping centre, we might be evacuating with elderly relatives or small children. All of those factors, and many others, can influence the level of protection that should be applied within a particular building. It’s not just about using a computer model to estimate how long a well-drilled evacuation will take. It’s also about adding in human behavior. Panasonic Announces Full Switch to R32 in 2018 • All Panasonic air-conditioning products with less than 3kg of refrigerant available in R32 • Higher value for installers to end users • Lower impact on global warming than R410A systems Panasonic is once again leading the change on adopting renewable energy sources, announcing that in 2018 it will make a full switch to R32. Panasonic will consolidate its residential and commercial airconditioning ranges with less than 3kg of refrigerant, including its newly designed RAC floor consoles, split, multi-split and cassettes, to be compatible with R32. According to 2014 EU F-Gas Regulation (517/2014), Europe must reduce the Global Warming Performance year by year. This regulation defines how each industry needs to contribute to reach the total European target. In the air-conditioning industry this affects Single Split air-conditioning systems containing less than 3kg of fluorinated greenhouse gases. The refrigerant within this system must be less than 750 GWP by the year 2025. Panasonic is ready

For many years, R32 has been used as a component part of the R407C and R410A refrigerant blends. On its own, however, R32 offers a number of significant advantages over blended refrigerants. Firstly, R32 has a much lower impact on global warming when compared to its blended predecessors - its Global Warming Potential (GWP), is significantly lower than that of R410A. When considering future legislation and the anticipated reduction in the availability of refrigerants, plus a drive towards the use of lower GWP refrigerants; Panasonic products will be future proofed. R32 is also a more efficient alternative to R410A, with realistic efficiency increases of up to 10%, leading to significant
energy savings for building services managers. As R32 is already a familiar component of R410A, so the switch doesn’t present any new challenges to installers. Procedures including piping and testing remain the same. There may be a need for slightly different tooling, such as recovery systems and leak detectors, but again this should not present a significant challenge. As with all refrigerants, R32 must be safely handled at all times and spaces properly ventilated when it is being charged and recovered from air conditioning units.
Alfredos Armaos, UK Country Manager at Panasonic Heating and Cooling, explains how the full switch to R32 will benefit Panasonic customers; “Consolidating our portfolio to be compatible with R32 is an important step towards reducing the impact of air conditioning on our environment. For suppliers, it allows them to offer a more sustainable solution, and for installers it introduces the opportunity to offer a more energy-efficient and cost effective option to clients.”
