D2 Townhouse

- Jake Moulson Architects D2 Townhouse is a 5-story Georgian dwelling in a conservation area of Dublin, now largely commercial. The building is distinguished from its neighbors by a substantial garden containing one of the few remaining original coach-houses in Dublin, highly significant in conservation. D2 Townhouse is Jake Moulson’s first solo project. Discovered in a state of dilapidation, with insensitive, utilitarian additions, the building needed returning from its recent office use into a single family home. Through dialogues between art, design, science and fictions, historical references and contemporary technological techniques, we amplified and revived its spatial drama. Through deep engagement with the family, the house’s history and its context, we attended to every detail. Our aim was to make each space distinct, with a palpable atmosphere.

Redesigning Waterbeach Community Primary School

Saunders Boston Architects are redesigning Waterbeach Community Primary School to expand the school’s capacity, improve the quality of learning facilities, and offer education opportunities for the local community. Planning permission has been granted to Waterbeach Community Primary School to increase its learning capacity to 630 places. The design, by Saunders Boston Architects, will also improve existing facilities, marking a step towards better education opportunities for the local community. The practice has provided full architectural design and lead consultant services, working alongside Kier Construction for the new development, which will include a two-storey teaching block extension consisting of 12 classrooms, a group room, an improved and extended main entrance, and revised landscape and interior design.

Informed by the building’s existing patterns, forms and, above all, light, our strategic, minimal extensions are conceived as inhabitable windows, reflecting, refracting, and drawing inhabitants between areas. We designed key items of furniture to work architecturally, magnifying tones and augmenting spaces while leaving historic fabric intact. Materially, our bespoke cast iron cladding, laser-etched steel floor, mirrored reveals, brass overlays and burnt wainscoting contrast brightness and deep shadow. Our unique thermoformed Corian and concrete kitchen, opening onto the garden, is geological – its rippled surface absorbing and diffusing light. Our cantilevered quartzite toilet, above the winter garden, melts into the sky. Installing innovative sub-basement ventilation, bat cavities and planting for biodiversity, we also look to the building’s future as a multi-referential home, restrained and flamboyant, for all kinds of lives.

Alongside the colourful exterior, Saunders Boston Architects also designed an inspirational ‘learning street’, which will connect the classrooms and provide a moment of reflection for students between classes. When designing the school, Saunders Boston Architects used technology such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), virtual reality (VR), and architectural modelling to bring the designs to life. The use of such technology not only benefitted the design process, but also the school’s students. The students were invited to visualise their dream school through the use of VR, which not only crafted some of the design, but hopefully inspired the students to consider a career in architecture or design in the future.

Monkey World goes bananas for Knauf Insulation donation

Industry News 05

Monkey World opened its doors in 1987 to home nine abused chimpanzees from Spain. Just three years later, the pavilions were built to house a further six rescued chimpanzees with the help of TV star, Anneka Rice. The rescue centre is now home to 54 chimpanzees and over 200 other primates. At nearly 30 years old, the pavilions required refurbishment to expand and upgrade the accommodation in preparation for a new rescue. With this in mind, Monkey World turned to Knauf Insulation for help. Charlie Crowther, spokesperson at Monkey World explained that as chimpanzees are native to Africa, they require additional heating to be comfortable in Dorset, UK. This means they need heated, indoor playrooms and bedrooms as an alternative to the outdoor space on cold or rainy days. She said: “The gymnasium-sized playrooms are open from floor to rafters to allow the chimps to climb and there are tunnels to the external play-spaces accessed by large ‘cat flaps’. We work hard to avoid heat-loss, and as a rescue centre who receive no outside funding, we needed to find ways to lower costs.” Knauf Insulation was quick to swing into action, agreeing to donate a pallet of Earthwool Loft Roll 44 for phase one of the build. The insulation was transported to Monkey World free of charge by builders’ merchants Bradford’s Building Supplies, Blandford, Dorset. Ian Boland, Area Sales Manager (South West) from Knauf Insulation said: “We were delighted to support Monkey World in their vital work. Earthwool Loft Roll is a high performance Glass Mineral Wool insulation, providing excellent thermal performance, which will help to keep the Pavilions warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather.” Paul Webster, Bradfords Blandford branch manager, added: “We were more than happy to help Monkey World with the supply of these products. Monkey World is a great local charity that does so much good and it’s great that we can help make a difference to the monkeys at the centre.” As well as increasing Monkey World’s energy efficiency, Earthwool Loft Roll 44 is non-combustible and has the best possible Euroclass A1 Reaction to Fire classification.

The Pavilion’s renovation is being undertaken by Monkey World staff in two phases to allow the chimpanzees to live comfortably in one half while the other half is renovated. It was therefore important to ensure minimum disruption to animals and keepers alike during phase one. Earthwool Loft Roll 44 is lightweight and has more insulation per roll than alternative loft rolls, minimising number of rolls required per project, reducing handling and increasing speed of install. With phase one completed, the Pavilion has already doubled in size. Thanks to Knauf Insulation’s donation and Bradford’s Building Supplies free delivery, the extended bedrooms have allowed Monkey World’s latest rescue, Toprish, to be introduced to the community of 16 chimpanzees in comfort.

United Living wins £18m Poole tower blocks revamp

Under an £18m deal, the contractor will carry out both internal and external upgrade works to Drake Court, Grenville Court, Nelson Court and Rodney Court in the old town.

Poole Housing Partnership has appointed contractor United Living (South) to upgrade four council tower blocks in the Dorset town centre in the wake of the Grenfell disaster.

Existing balconies will be replaced with “wintergarden” enclosed balconies.

The project includes removing existing render cladding to be replaced with terracotta cladding, resolve cold bridging and thermal issues.

Sprinkler systems will be fitted in all existing flats as part of the Project Admiral plan, which will get underway next year.

Most of the flats in the four blocks are owned by the council but managed on its behalf by Poole Housing Partnership.

Former sugar refinery converted into Brooklyn Waterfront ‘jewel box’ 10 Jay Street, a landmarked building flanked by the Manhattan Bridge and flush with waterfront views, has been brought back to life through the creative vision of New York-based architecture firm ODA. Built in partnership with Triangle Assets, the 230,000 square foot property includes 10 stories of open floor plates, each with original detailing and characteristics that bring you back to the industrial age. A delicate balance of glass, steel, brick, and spandrels give the building a modern sensibility without compromising its industrial heritage, while the reflective facade engages people far and wide, making it a new landmark along the water’s edge. Formerly, the Arbuckle Brothers sugar refinery, which dates back to 1898 and was originally designed by the George M. Newhall Engineering Co., the building was a massive structure that reached all the way to the water, where boats could dock for deliveries and services. In 1925 it was converted into a winery, and later that decade, the front structure was torn off, leaving three of the original facades and an interior party wall exposed to the East River shore. For 50 years it was left vacant and fell into disrepair until purchased by family owned Triangle Assets in 1991. “With this design we really felt we were giving back to our community,” said

Benjamin Stavrach of Triangle Assets. When it came time to renovate, they wanted a design that would preserve the unique history of the building while integrating into the 21st century fabric of Dumbo. “They just don’t make buildings like this anymore,” said Stavrach referencing the exterior brickwork, the interior terracotta arches, and the 23,000 square foot floor plates. The facade and interior earned 15 permits from New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, which can hold jewel-box designs to intense scrutiny. The owners donated almost 15,000 SF of land to Brooklyn Bridge Park, which is now manicured walkways and green lawns. The Stavrach’s originally planned to develop the building as condominiums, but when they saw the iconic design

by ODA they couldn’t part with the property. “We fell in love with it, and we said, there’s no way we’re selling this.” Designer and developer went back to the drawing board with HPC, DOB, LPC and changed the design to commercial leases. Triangle Assets challenged ODA to reimagine the building for commercial tenants that would appeal to larger commercial businesses. ODA dug into the site’s history, drawing a series of skins that evoke sugar crystals, broken geodes and crystalline surface that now serve to reflect the park, and the river sunsets that define its surroundings. The renovations restore the three east, north and south original facades to their historical masonry condition, plus the interior brick vault ceilings and columns.

Noise mitigation against HS2 enabling works at 30 Euston Square 30 Euston Square is a spectacular Grade II* Listed building dating back to 1906. It has an impressive Victorian façade with an original Greek revival style entrance hall and internally is full of ornate architectural details. Upholding the legacy of the health related professionals who have occupied the building since it was constructed; in 2010 it was purchased by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). Selectaglaze has a long standing association with RCGP and has carried out a number of installations to different areas of the building over the years. The affiliation began in 2010, when the new owners decided it was necessary to commence works to reduce noise ingress on the façade overlooking the Euston Road. To make it more attractive for the users of the space, it was decided to treat them with secondary glazing.

Imperial matches bricks for stunning restoration of Quarry Bank Mill Imperial Bricks has supplied bricks for a new structure within an 18th Century National Trust listed property. Quarry Bank Mill in Styal, Cheshire, was a complete industrial community built around a cotton mill in the Cheshire countryside. In November 2017 the mill was closed to allow refurbishment, including construction of a passenger lift to give access to the whole site for people with mobility issues. It re-opened to visitors in summer 2018.

On a few of the lower floors there are study rooms where GP members can stay when they are on College business. Secondary glazing has been installed to inhibit noise from passing traffic. These rooms required optimum noise reduction to enable complete concentration for students who were near to gaining their medical qualifications. A range of units were installed, including vertical and horizontal sliding units and side hung casements. In 2012/2013, Selectaglaze returned to install secondary glazing to other parts of the building, which were either used for RCGP staff or as tenanted office areas. These were predominantly overlooking Euston Square and a few of the study bedrooms towards the back of the building. With works in the surrounding area due to finish in 2026 – the projected date for the opening of the new terminus, the occupants should feel a positive change; with a agreeable environment where they can sleep better, concentrate and hear themselves think. Founded in 1966 and a Royal Warrant Holder since 2004, Selectaglaze has gained a reputation as a leading secondary glazing specialist, creating sensitive designs with low visual impact. Secondary glazing units are subject to rigorous third-party testing which has resulted in high level certification covering thermal, acoustic insulation and protection against forced entry. visit:

Contractor HH Smith and Buttress Architects in Manchester were responsible for Quarry Bank Mill’s £9.4 million restoration and renovation. The whole project took close to four years and was funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund and thousands of generous donors. It is one of the biggest projects in the National Trust’s history, an important step in the conservation charity’s continuing commitment to bringing the stories of its properties to life. To keep the authentic look of the mill, it was essential that the new structure blended seamlessly into the old. Imperial Bricks was approached to provide bricks for the new lift shaft to match the existing brickwork around the lift shaft area. Brick matching is a service offered by Imperial – if stock bricks can’t offer a close match, it’s possible to have a custom product created. The brick matching service will compare colour, size, texture and weathering to produce an exact match. Imperial’s expert brick match team visited the site to record the colour and size of the old bricks. Jason Hughes, Managing Director comments: “It’s the kind of project we love! We visited the site to photograph the existing brickwork, then had sample brick boards made up in various shades so the architect could select the best match. After careful matching, 8,000 3” Reclamation Handmade bricks with a bespoke weathered finish were supplied. It’s a rustic red multi brick that’s particularly suited to old Cheshire buildings and has been a very popular choice for matching period properties across the North West. It was a very rewarding project and it’s a privilege to be able to contribute to the renovation and improvements of such a historic property.” For more information on the traditional handmade, waterstruck, wirecut and pressed bricks and services available visit

Advanced’s High Rise Reputation sees it Protect European Landmark Global fire systems leader, Advanced, has been specified on another landmark tall building. Set to stand at 62-storeys high, 22 Bishopsgate in the City of London will, on completion, become the second-tallest building in Western Europe. The 278m office building will offer 1.275 million sq. ft of high specification office space, as well as eight community spaces, covering over 100,000 sq ft, including an innovation hub, curated gallery space, fresh food market, gym and wellbeing retreat. Once completed, Advanced will protect both of Western Europe’s tallest buildings, with 22 Bishopsgate being the latest in a long line of London’s most prestigious and iconic skyscrapers specifying Advanced, including the Shard, the Leadenhall Building, the Heron Tower and the HSBC Tower. At the centre of the active fire protection for 22 Bishopsgate are over 80 networked MxPro 5 panels with graphic display and BMS integration, alongside three special build panels for the building’s Fire Command Centre, that will form part of the intelligent fire detection network. Advanced’s panels are used alongside Apollo’s Soteria detectors and its networking is widely regarded as the most resilient and scalable solution on the market. It can be expanded up to 200 node networks covering huge areas with complicated cause-and-effect. As a UK-first, 22 Bishopsgate will utilise a specially developed lift-evacuation strategy in case of fire. The building is separated into four vertical areas by firehardened slabs with a two-hour fire rating separating a floor from the one above at levels 26, 42 and 58. Depending on which of the four vertical areas of the building a fire is detected, workers on that floor and the floors above egress via fire escape stairs to the area

below and from there can evacuate via the lifts, safe in the knowledge that these are protected by the slabs above. Responsible for every aspect of installation of the fire system from design to completion, PHF Fire, a division of PHF Electrical, used Advanced for its market-leading networking capabilities, best suited to managing a network of this size and complexity. Paul Falkner, Director at PHF Fire, said: “Great emphasis and consideration has been placed on the fire protection for 22 Bishopsgate – a building truly at the at the forefront of fire technology. From working with Advanced previously we knew its products could be relied upon to deliver powerful, flexible and dependable fire protection for the complex nature of a building of this size.”

Amanda Hope, UK Business Development Manager at Advanced, said: “Advanced is a leader in the market in terms of performance, quality and ease-of-use and being specified in arguably the UK’s most high-profile commercial development, since the Shard, reinforces this. We are thrilled to now not only protect Western Europe’s tallest building, but soon also the second tallest. It was a pleasure to work with the team at PHF Fire where we were able to meet their needs with a system capable of delivering the complicated cause and effect programming and flexible networking required.” With EN54 parts 2, 4 and 13 approval the MxPro is the fire industry’s leading multiprotocol fire solution, offering customers a choice of two panel ranges, four detector protocols and a completely open installer network that enjoys free training and support.

Advanced is a world leader in the development and manufacture of intelligent fire systems. The performance, quality and ease of use of its products sees Advanced specified in locations all over the world, from single panel installations to large, multi-site networks in some of the world’s most prestigious sites. Advanced’s products include complete fire detection systems, extinguishing control panels, fire paging and false alarm management systems. More details can be found on the website at

PermaRock Mineral Fibre External Wall Insulation Compliance and performance without compromise

15 UK manufacturer PermaRock Products Ltd has supplied one of its thermal external wall insulation (EWI) systems for a new retirement village in Nottingham. The £11m development is part of Nottingham City Homes (NCH) and Nottingham City Council’s Building a Better Nottingham programme. Known collectively as Winwood Heights, the site features two existing 15-storey blocks, which have been extensively refurbished, and a new extra care facility built between them. The properties are managed by social housing provider Nottingham City Homes (NCH) and the scheme was delivered by Willmott Dixon. The contractor chosen for the installation of the external wall insulation system was Sustainable Building Services (UK) Ltd. NCH required that the EWI system should incorporate non-combustible insulation and that it must be suitable for use on the new build low-rise Fusion SIPS construction and existing non-traditionally built ‘No-Fines’ high-rise buildings. Designed for projects on which the highest levels of fire safety are required, the specified PermaRock Mineral Fibre EWI system incorporates Rockwool Ltd’s noncombustible (EuroClass A1) stone wool insulation and a high-performance nano-quartz self-cleansing decorative render, PermaRock Silicone Ultra K-Finish. The system is suitable for installation above DPC level on all building types and heights and is tested and assessed to EN 13501-1:2007 + A1:2009 (A2-s1-d0 fire classification) confirming compliance to the latest revisions to the Building Regulations.

installer, Sustainable Building Services (UK) Ltd, in ensuring that the highest quality standards were maintained throughout. The completed works have meant residents have benefitted from enhancements to the local environment and improved aesthetics, increased comfort levels, a reduced carbon footprint and confidence in the fire performance of the cladding. More information about specifying cladding for high rise buildings is available from the PermaRock website. It features product information, materials selection guidance and case studies. Additional fire safety and system design advice can be obtained by calling PermaRock’s technical support team on 01509 262924 or by emailing

The Rockwool stone wool insulation, available in thicknesses from 50 mm to 250 mm, is adhesively bonded and mechanically anchored to the substrate, avoiding the formation of a cavity and reducing the risk of thermal bypass. The reinforced render system is applied directly over the insulation and is additionally anchored through to the substrate to ensure resistance to wind action and stability in the event of fire. A notable aspect of the scheme was the colourful panellised treatment chosen for certain elevations of the two no-fines concrete towers. The coloured panels, achieved using PermaRock through-coloured Silicone Ultra renders, give the high-rise blocks a striking appearance and provide design continuity, with similar colours reflected in the smaller, new-build extra-care facility. This development showcases the design possibilities achievable with PermaRock renders and finishes. PermaRock’s Mineral Fibre EWI systems are manufactured in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001 / 14001 and are approved by the Solid Wall Insulation Guarantee Agency (SWIGA) for installation onto low and high-rise buildings. They are accredited through BRE Global Certification and are suitable for all heights of buildings, either retro-fitted or used as part of a new build scheme. Comprehensive design, technical advice and support throughout the project ensured that the installation work progressed smoothly. PermaRock technical services staff provided compliance checking at all stages, assisting the

Vacant building? Develop a data centre! Data centres are the buildings that house the computers, storage and networking equipment that makes the internet work. Where is your company’s website? Where are those pictures you store in the ‘Cloud’? They’re in a data centre somewhere.

These small data centres are known generically as edge data centres and can offer anything from 50 to 500 m2 of computer room floor space.

The UK is Europe’s largest data centre market and it’s worth over a 100 billion pounds to the UK economy every year. The market is still growing at somewhere between 5 and 11% according to industry reports and supports an annual construction market of £1.1 billion in the UK every year.

• a secure building • a strong enough floor >8 kN/m2 • Enough floor to ceiling height >3 m • Enough space around it for the requisite generators, air conditioning plant etc. • An experienced design consultancy to guide you through the process

If you have some spare space perhaps you should develop a data centre. Big data centres cost hundreds of millions of pounds to develop but there is now a trend for smaller data centres driven by the advent of 5G telephony and the internet of things, IoT. These require processing closer to the user rather that at some remote location hundreds of miles away.

To build a data centre you need

Planning permission is not usually a problem in an industrial or commercial landscape but the location of standby electrical generators may take some care. Fit out costs are around £10,000 per square metre and typical annual rental income is about £3,000 per square metre for high quality space

and so a Return on Investment of less than four years is feasible. Capitoline Ltd is a specialist consultancy with fifteen years’ experience assessing data centre projects for economic and technical feasibility and then assisting clients with the design and construction phase and then onto the marketing phase. Data centre space can be let or sold directly to customers or put to market via a specialised data centre management company. The photographs show some examples of what a small edge data centre looks in some recent Capitoline-designed projects. Mixing contemporary designs with the highest quality manufacturing, the taps perfectly balance style with functionality to deliver their newest brassware range.

Incorporating the latest designs including a variety of round and square taps along with industrial, crosshead and lever handles, the Hudson Reed brassware range has styles to suit all bathrooms. Suitable when aiming for any look, and with small details making a huge difference, Hudson Reed’s new brassware range is unparalleled on the market.

The square collection includes the new Soar and Astra taps showcasing sharper, more defined edges for a bold finish, with Soar boasting its very own unique angled handle design. The round collection includes the new Sottile, Willow and Drift taps with smoother, curved edges for a subtle finish - all mono basin mixers across the brassware ranges are also conveniently supplied with a waste.

Style and sophistication spring to mind when browsing their brassware, with every tap range having its own unique style making for an impressive statement piece in any bathroom oasis. With a variety of designs, the taps can be coupled in a variety of ways with the many different basins and vessels that Hudson Reed also offer.

Along with the beautiful square and round tap options, is the stunningly intricate Revolution Brassware range hosting a rustic, yet beautifully modern industrial theme, all with an impressive finish. Not forgetting the Tec crosshead and lever taps, they are perfectly symmetrical with unique handle designs making them stand out from any mainstream design.

Bathrooms & Washrooms 25 With high quality brass internals and impressive ceramic disc technology, Hudson Reed brassware ensures all taps have a long life and smooth operation. Only needing a quarter turn in order to turn the tap fully on and off, ceramic disc technology makes for easy movement and is particularly handy for the elderly and young. Cleverly designed so that when both discs are aligned the flow of water is stopped means that dripping taps are a thing of the past. An impressive, shiny chrome finish makes every tap in this contemporary brassware range have a crisp and clean finish giving any bathroom an air of luxury. Regardless of style, be it industrial, crosshead, lever, round or square, the same beautiful chrome finish runs throughout. Along with the wide variety of taps, the new Hudson Reed brassware also offers different size options suitable for any bathroom. Mini mono basin mixers are ideal for compact bathrooms where space may be at a premium, allowing you to have stylish, on-trend taps regardless of available space. Alternatively, tall mono basin mixers work great with vessels showcasing more of a statement piece, perfect for bathrooms with more room. Not only do Hudson Reed offer a range of tap styles for all size bathrooms, also available within the ranges are contemporary wall mounted taps. Providing more space and increasing the range of motion, wall mounted taps are a great alternative to traditional deck mounted brassware, making for a great statement piece. If stylish designs and high-quality manufacturing wasn’t enough for Hudson Reed’s new brassware range to make an impact, the fact that they also come with a 20-year guarantee most definitely does. Providing peace of mind, you can be rest assured in knowing that their brassware range has a long-life span and is manufactured to withstand the test of time. With coordinating options available throughout the taps range, Hudson Reed also offer a variety of shower valves and bath fillers to perfectly compliment their taps and to create a beautiful finished look. Trends to take your bathroom to the next level

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the home, a place to clean and groom and a space where you can relax and unwind away from the hustle and bustle of the main house. Bathroom design is constantly evolving as manufacturers use the latest technology and materials to produce an array of bathroom products in a range of styles, from traditional fixtures to ultra-modern designs.

Statement floor tiles will draw the eye down while using a plain colour emphasises the bathrooms fixtures and fittings. Textured wall tiles provide dimension to the space, while natural stone tiles offer a modern design.

Here, bathroom specialists Bathroom Planet have compiled some of the top bathroom trends to inspire you to create a bathroom that will stand out from the crowd. Whether you are looking to update an existing bathroom or start from scratch, these trends are bound to get the creative juices flowing.

Bathroom wallpaper has evolved over the past decade and is now specially designed to stand up to the rigours of the bathroom. It is often a cheaper alternative to tiling and offers an

Walls and floors Tiles are one of the easiest ways of creating a focal point and drawing people’s eye to specific areas of the bathroom. Showcase the shower enclosure by using geometric tiles on the walls or create a luxurious feel with bright white subway tiles for a traditional look.

array of designs not possible on tiles. Bathroom wallpaper is also available with a textured finish and is quicker to fit than standard tiles. Using Bold colours Another great way of creating focal points within the bathroom is to use bold colours. The contrast between light and dark has always been a popular choice in bathroom design, but adding pops of colour

such as gold, copper and brass to specific areas is a great way of creating excitement in an otherwise monochrome room.

Fixtures and Fittings Bathroom design has come a long way in the past few years, with statement pieces being in high demand. Forget the traditional rectangular mirror, instead, opt for round or oval mirrors to create an elegant space. Taps and mixers are now available in a range of different styles too, so whether you are looking for something a bit more traditional or something sleek and modern, there is a range of fixtures to suit. Simple Designs Minimalist designs are becoming popular bathroom trends with frameless shower enclosure doors and screens dominating. These spainspired fixtures create the illusion of more space in the bathroom and allow more light into the room. Wet rooms are also becoming a popular choice; these simple designs are especially good for bathrooms that are awkward shapes or for those who need easy access into the bathroom. Warm metal fixtures such as brass and copper inject a sense of luxury and glamour into simple bathroom designs and are available in matte or polished finishes to suit any colour palette. Adding Technology It was only a matter of time before technology made its way into the bathroom and we are starting to see more and more manufacturers using technology to save water, consume less energy and to make our bathrooms run more efficiently. Whether it is smart showers that can be set up for different users, sensor activated toilet flushes or smart lighting options, the technology used in bathrooms is expected to increase exponentially over the coming years, and who knows what the future will bring.

The bathroom continues to evolve from a purely functional space to a spa-like retreat where style, colour, comfort and choice are of equal importance as in any other room of the home. Style-conscious homeowners now have more options than ever before. All manner of bathroom products, from contemporary and cutting edge to accessibility-led, are designed with good looks and practicality in mind. Historically bathroom furniture was limited to vanity units, but today new collections often include a choice of furniture items designed to complement the sanitaryware. As well as giving the bathroom a neat, finished look, furniture provides storage space for toiletries, towels and cleaning materials, keeping the room clutter free – Marie Kondo would approve. Good bathroom design is suited to modern, functional needs and the best ranges feature a mix of open and closed storage options with single and double door or drawer bases and can be combined to form a personalised intimate setting. Neutral colours and natural wood finishes are combined with delightfully smooth matt finishes on elegantly shaped basins in taupes, minks, and creams. LED lighting that is both subtle, safe and efficient is included in quality bathroom furniture – inside drawers and below vanity units to faintly light floors for added warmth and safety. Thoughtfully created bathroom accessories are combining materials too to provide benefits like no-pinch-marks on robes, sealed-tight lids on waste bins and brush holders, and freestanding bath side tables for books, devices, drinks or spectacles. Choice has become a leading factor when redesigning bathrooms, with consumers wanting to tailor the product to their specific lifestyle needs. A trio of innovative syphon solutions recently introduced to the market as part of the launch of the Plural collection allows ceramic basins to be placed at various angles as an alternative to the conventional positioning by the wall, encouraging users to face each other and engage with their surroundings. Another new idea has been designed specifically to enable * water

washbasins to be mounted in an open bathroom space while retaining a clean and minimalistic look. The third allows for the fitting of column or monobloc basins at free angles in the room instead of the more common 90° angle to the wall. Choice is also a key element in taps and shower fittings with finishes that include brushed nickel, copper and matt black. Tall monobloc taps and wall mounted spouts are perfect for use with feature basins. All new brassware features a ceramic disc cartridge interior which means that water can be turned on and off at the touch of a finger – perfect for older or less-abled people. Flow restrictors help to save water without compromising on performance. The future of our planet is something none of us can afford to ignore and the bathroom industry has led the way in water saving with reduced toilet flushing – which can make significant savings. WCs use more water than any other appliance in the home. Even compared to drench showers. On average, they account for 30% of a family’s water needs every day. An older UK WC flushes using around 13 litres of water* – but modern dual flush models can be flushed using as little as 2.5 litres of water with a longer flush available at 4 litres. It is easy to replace an old WC with an eco-friendly wall-hung or back-to-wall model which as well as saving water will give the bathroom an instant face lift. Multi-functional shower toilets that wash and dry the user are standard in Japan - and are gaining favour here. This sort of WC offers the ultimate in personal cleanliness and means there is no need for toilet paper. Family-friendly, these sophisticated toilets are now available in sleek, modern designs and are perfect for everyone from children to older and less-abled people who might otherwise need help with their personal hygiene needs.

Easy Bathrooms strengthens area sales team to support trades people Easy Bathrooms, which supplies bathroom products and tiles to trades people, has strengthened its sales team – specifically within its contracts department – to support its growing base of trade clients.

Paul Blanksby, who was formerly a manager of Easy Bathrooms’ Sheffield showroom; and Charlotte Wood, who has been a sales executive with the firm for a year; have both been promoted to area sales managers – joining Rob Holroyd, who has headed up the division since the business was founded in 2013. The team, who together have 57 years of bathroom industry experience, now cover the whole of the UK. Easy Bathrooms has bolstered the contracts department on the back of a particularly strong trading year, which has seen the firm open 10 stores within 12 months – including across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. Commenting on the appointments, Rob said: “These internal promotions will serve housebuilders and trade customers perfectly – both Paul and Charlotte are extremely knowledgeable about the industry, as well as specifically about Easy Bathrooms’ products. “The opening of the showrooms means that our trade clients can use our stores to inspire their own clients – so it makes sense that, as the consumer side of the business grows, so does our reputation within the trade arena.” Paul and Charlotte will support house builders, developers and plumbing contractors in particular, visiting clients’ building sites and head offices, as well as working at trade exhibitions. Further appointments are expected to be made in the next 12 months, as Easy Bathrooms continues in its ambition to become the UK’s number-one specified brand.

The Rinnai 1200i Continuous Flow Hot Water Heating Unit

DELIVERING CONTINUOUS FLOW OF USEABLE HOT WATER Now available is the Rinnai HDC 1200i continuous flow hot water unit with the capacity to deliver in excess of 1500 litres of temperature accurate hot water per hour, with an overall gross efficiency of more than 95%. These levels of performance, with unbeatable efficiency levels, mean the Rinnai 1200i is more than capable of meeting and exceeding the hot water demands of all applications. This precision engineered unit can also be combined as multiple units into one single, easy to handle module incorporating cascade frames and common flue. Both the HDC 1200 internal and external models turn in a market leading energy performance of 107% net efficiency and offer superlative ranges of modulation. The systems internal analytical system can modulate the burner from 54kw to 2.4kw. The Rinnai HDC 1200i is engineered for minimal energy wastage and maximum energy performance. It is worth remembering that Part L of the Building Regulations 2013 has set minimum thermal efficiency levels of 90% for natural and 92% for LPG, consequently outlawing noncondensing gas fired water heaters for use in new build projects.

Rinnai is the only manufacturer that can supply a complete range of internal and external ultra-high efficiency condensing continuous flow water heaters, aligned not only to comply but surpass changes on the regulatory horizon. Rinnai units and systems are now the number one choice for any size of site or large building or business with a heavy demand for constant hot water or where high peaks of demand occur at certain times. Any number of modules can be manifolded, so the water handling capacity is truly infinite and there is no risk of the ‘cascade’ of hot water ever running out. The manifolded 1200i units can be delivered direct to site in one complete, easy to manage package and at a very competitive price. For the end user this guarantees considerable cost savings over other forms of hot water generation. The relatively compact footprint of all Rinnai units and systems means it can optimise plant room space and safeguard accessibility for maintenance and servicing. There is huge potential for on-demand style water heaters such as the Rinnai HDC 1200i units to play their part in new build and in refurbishments projects alike, where in the latter there are still many old systems that need replacing. By replacing this older technology with new condensing

appliances will help support the UK drive towards greener industry. The Rinnai Infinity HDC 1200i water heater uses heat exchanger technology to allow the largest capacity flow rates, thereby guaranteeing all the hot water needed, when it is needed. As well as increasing capacity, the Rinnai Infinity water heater has lower greenhouse emissions because of the new reduced NOx burner technology and as there is no storage, this scores well with BREEAM. Available in both internal and external versions, HDC 1200i gives end users 107% net efficiency as the condensing process delivers up to 95% thermal efficiency, translating into significant energy savings when compared to standard tankless water heaters. With a continuous flow water heating unit, it will deliver limitless amounts of useable hot water, whatever the site - school, hospital, hotel, office blocks, leisure club etc with no fluctuations in water delivery temperature. The only time the site uses energy to heat water is when there is a demand, in other words, it is only burning gas when a tap or shower is being run. Marshalls Cromwell Walling, Miller Homes – Lindley Marshalls may be better known as the UK’s leading hard landscaping manufacturer having supplied product to some of the most prestigious landmarks in the UK but most recently the walling division has been making the headlines following the acquisition of Britain’s largest independent brick manufacturer, Edenhall. The addition of concrete facing bricks has bolstered Marshalls’ range of vertical products, sitting alongside the already popular reconstituted walling offering. The reconstituted concrete walling range consists of three ranges suitable for a wide range of project types including both residential and commercial schemes. Cromwell, Thistlestone and Epoch walling all offer subtle differences aesthetically, and all are produced to the highest technical standards ensuring products stand up to the test of time. The popular Cromwell range is available in three finish types across three course

heights and four colours allowing the customer greater creativity when designing a scheme. Marshalls Cromwell reconstituted walling range was recently selected to be used on a housing scheme in West Yorkshire. The Lindley Park development near Huddersfield, is now a well-recognised landmark in the local landscape. The scheme wanted to incorporate materials that would provide a sympathetic addition to the surrounding open countryside and wide horizons and given the area’s preference for a weathered sandstone aesthetic, Marshalls’ Cromwell reconstituted walling product was the natural choice.

The product was selected in the Weathered colourway which gives the buff block a slightly darker tone to ensure it blends into the surrounding Yorkshire landscape. The pitched face also offers the naturally split sandstone look that is so common in the region. Manufactured using locally quarried sandstone aggregates ensures the block

closely replicates the visual and textured characteristics of natural stone, and is wet-pressed for a smoother and more realistic finish. The complementary neutral toned mortar that was used on the scheme creates a beautifully muted blend with the units to allow the characteristic exposed aggregates of the stone to be the focal point. The use of buff sandstone aggregates ensure the base colour is intrinsically maintained, replicating the appearance of natural stone at an affordable price, and as Cromwell is manufactured using a hydraulic press, it has low water absorption which guarantees a long-term, high quality

face appearance. The pressing process also ensures that each unit is of a very high density, which maintains accuracy when the product is split during secondary processing which ultimately results in a more accurate block which is easier to lay. The overall scheme includes a superb selection of attractive, high quality modern houses and apartments into a popular residential neighbourhood. The combination of the reliability and consistency of contemporary production methods with a traditional natural stone product has created a modern yet characterful housing scheme in a delightfully rural environment.

DESIGNERS AND ARCHITECTS CAN GO THE DISTANCE WITH A NEW STYLE OF HOMELIFT WHICH REACHES NEW HEIGHTS A nationwide homelift company has extended the distance its latest range of domestic lifts can travel by half a metre to a maximum of 4.5 metres. Stiltz Homelifts has rolled out the product update, which meets the BS EN 81-41 European standard for lifts traveling over three metres, to the Stiltz Duo+ Homelift and Stiltz Trio+ Homelift models. The longer travel option allows the company’s authorised partners to reach out to end users with more varied types of property, such as period buildings or homes with high ceilings. In order for the lift to travel an extra 50cms, the homelift specialist has increased the size of the drum, while the modular, self-supporting rails can be customised to fit the size requirements of any ceiling. Gino Farruggio, UK Trade Sales Director for Stiltz Homelifts, said: “We’re delighted to have expanded the capabilities of our homelifts as this means we can now offer designers, architects,

and building professionals an even greater number of installation options on projects. “Our research and development team in Kingswinford have worked hard on extending the travel distance of our lifts following feedback from our distributors in countries like France and Germany, where properties tend to have higher ceilings than in the UK. “The new 4.5m travel option means we can provide a unique solution to homeowners with higher ceilings who have an immediate need for a homelift.” As part of continuous investment in product development, Stiltz Homelifts has also upgraded its Classic and Vista models with a new control panel which brings them in line with the Duo+ and Trio+ models.

Platform lift at the New Horizon Church

New Horizon Church has just found a new home at an existing building in Langley Mill, about 10 miles North West of Nottingham. As a part of the move to the new premises, they contacted Ability Lifts to enquire about a suitable lift to enable access to the first floor.  After first reviewing the architect’s drawings, and then making a site visit, Ability Lifts recommended the Optimum 100 platform lift as the ideal solution. The lift requires a footprint of just 1250mm x 1560mm, whilst providing a fully Part M compliant disabled access sized platform of 1120mm x 1480mm.

As the lift was to become an integral part of the building, the client wanted to maximise the amount of light passing into the area, so the lift was designed with glazed doors and shaft glazing on the ground floor. In lieu of a pit underneath the lift structure, a small aluminium ramp was placed at the foot of the lift to aid wheelchair access. The lift was also provided with an optional fire park system, so when the building alarm system activated, it would automatically return to the ground floor and turn itself off to prevent further use. In addition to this, the client wanted to restrict access to a specific number of users, so a key control system was incorporated into the lift. The Optimum 100 lift is completely self-supporting, so there was no need to form supporting walls or provide any lifting beams or scaffolding. This enabled an extremely efficient and smooth fitting of the lift, taking just two days for a complete installation. The platform lift comes with a fantastic guarantee including 12 months parts and labour warranty, a 5 year warranty on the motor and gearbox and 10 year warranty on the drive chains, meaning the lift will offer trouble free service for years to come. Please contact the Ability Lifts team on 0845 006 8803 or email for further information on the Optimum 100 and the other products in the Optimum range of lifts.

Find out how to add an extra level of enjoyment to your house at the Southern Homebuilding & Renovating Show The South has seen a rise in the creation of games rooms, as pub closures continue to increase following the enforcement of the smoking ban. As a result, the market is seeing a growing demand for home entertainment spaces, smart technology and recreational experiences. For those who wish to delve into the domain of at-home recreation, the Southern Homebuilding & Renovating Show, sponsored by Idealcombi, the Danish contemporary window company, and Self-Build Zone, specialist supplier of site insurance packages and structural warranties, is returning to Surrey between 29-30 June at Sandown Park, with practical advice, products and services to help homeowners get closer to achieving the fun follies they desire.

Gary Drage, managing director of SAM Leisure, says: ‘Within the Southern region, games rooms are an understood concept that people want. More than 60 per cent of our sales go to homes within this area. The South of the UK is where the average spend tends to be high, which may be attributed to the fact that, in this region, people are more willing to invest in their homes, properties tend to be bigger, as do budgets.’ Sian Astley, interior and renovation expert, adds: ‘The relentless rise of social media and cultural influences means displaying how well you are doing is becoming the norm for many people. A little like the flashy 80’s, outward and bought displays of wealth are on the up, with homeowners showing off their properties and interiors in their feeds. In the Victorian era, affluence was commonly displayed through the construction of ‘follies’ - garden pavilions built purely for extravagance.

‘Modern day follies include large garden rooms outside but inside is getting the splash the cash treatment too. More and more homeowners are specifying innovative entertainment and media rooms within the home to have fun, glamorous and technologically advanced spaces for friends and family to get together.’ Providing a wealth of industry knowledge from more than 220 exhibitors and 20 plus free daily seminars and masterclasses, the Southern Homebuilding & Renovating Show is an informative showcase of innovative products and services by specialist companies from a range of industries including kitchens; bathrooms; doors and windows; extensions and conversions; eco and heating; architecture; design; financial services; planning permissions, and many more. The Advice Centre, is a drop-in clinic for tailored, impartial guidance, and is open to people who wish to share their project ideas with industry-leading specialists with extensive experience across all self-build and renovating sectors. The Ask the Builder area is set to be a show highlight again this year, where members of the Federation of Master Builders will offer advice on hiring accredited, highly skilled construction workers. For hands-on knowledge on all phases of the design, building and construction process and guidance on taking plans from start to finish, visitors are encouraged to stop by the Ask the Architect area, located within The Advice Centre, where chartered specialists from RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) will provide personalised advice through one-onone sessions.

A perfect example of the slender steel glazing achieved with Janisol Arte

Schueco Jansen renovation window is the preferred solution Janisol Arte 2.0, the second-generation renovation window from steel systems specialist Schueco Jansen, is proving popular with architects because of its enhanced specification, improved performance characteristics and ability to satisfy the aesthetic concerns of local authority planners and conservation officers. Now being seen as the preferred solution for many refurbishment projects, especially those involving a listed building, elegantly ‘retro’ Janisol Arte 2.0 offers an enlarged range of profiles with slim sight-lines from 25 mm. A wider choice of glazing bead shapes – right-angled, bevelled, scotia and flat – makes it even easier to find an exact match for the steel windows being replaced.

Furthermore, since laser-welded profiles can now be added to standard Arte profiles, mullion spans can be significantly increased, so enabling the Janisol Arte 2.0 window to accommodate much larger areas of fenestration. Available in all the opening types commonly encountered in both pre- and post-war industrial buildings, maximum vent weights have increased to 150 kg thanks to the introduction of state-of-theart, 3D adjustable stainless steel hinges. Another benefit is that simpler fabrication techniques reduce manufacturing time by up to 85%, meaning that six and a half Janisol Arte 2.0 vents can be produced in the time it took to make a single vent in the previous system. Special new foam profiles located between the glass and the frame mean that the insulation in the Janisol Arte 2.0 window has been significantly enhanced and following the introduction of insert profiles

– which also speed up fabrication times – results in drainage that is even more reliable. In addition, because all Janisol Arte 2.0 profiles now go through the latest ZF 100 galvannealed hot-dip process, corrosion resistance has been improved and processing weldability enhanced. Finally, as well as standard, premiumquality steel profiles, clients can opt for Janisol Arte 2.0 profiles in highgrade austenitic 1.4401 stainless steel or Corten steel, completing a specification that is thought to be unmatched by any other renovation window on the market. For more information on Schueco Jansen’s Janisol Arte 2.0 renovation window, visit or email

P C Henderson’s Industrial Sliding Door Hardware Specified for Unique Boathouse Project in Devon London based architectural practice, Wimshurst Pelleriti, has recently specified P C Henderson’s Straight Sliding 301 industrial door hardware for a unique Boathouse project on the River Yealm in Devon.

The architecture practice was provided with a challenging brief to design a boathouse which could be sensitively built into the steep sided estuary of the river. The new structure would be small in size but used to store a wealth of waterside equipment and water craft, including a 14 foot speedboat. The result was an innovative and sophisticated infrastructure built with galvanized steel and untreated Siberian larch to reflect the woodland setting. To meet the design requirements for optimum storage, using minimal space, a series of sliding doors were installed on the ground level of the boathouse to enable easy access from both the surrounding land and water. P C Henderson’s Straight Sliding 301 was identified as the best system for the project.

Will Wimshurst, Director at Wimshurst Pelleriti commented “Our aim was to not only design a solution which was innovative and aesthetically pleasing but one which could also deliver considerable social benefits to our client. By incorporating seven different sliding door systems throughout the boathouse, we were able to maximise both internal and external space whilst also ensuring easy access to the quayside and slipway”. The project also benefited from a number of other design elements including a hoist so that the heavy yet delicate speedboat could be stored 10ft high in the eaves and easily lowered into the water when required. “The doors on some of the systems were extremely heavy so it was important

that the specified hardware could cater for the additional weight. Due to the surrounding marine environment, it was also important that the material used was highly corrosive resistant without affecting performance”, continued Will. Straight Sliding makes up part of P C Henderson’s industrial range of sliding door hardware. The robust system caters for anything from light commercial

doors right up to heavy industrial doors weighing up to 2000kg. Ian Sproat, Technical Development Manager at P C Henderson commented, “Straight Sliding is able to be specified as individual components for varying weights and environments – making it one of our most versatile systems. The boathouse project is a great example of what can be achieved with this system”.

1930s house transformed by modern, lightfilled kitchen extension Ryan and Rebecca lived in a small flat in the pleasant town of Enfield but seven years ago, when their first daughter was born they decided to buy a bigger place.

Keen to remain in the same sought-after area of Greater London they came across a 1930s three-bed terraced house that had great potential to renovate and extend. The couple made do with their small L-shaped kitchen, which led to an outdoor toilet and old coal store, for around five years before they decided to take on their biggest renovation project to date. By this time, their daughter Isabel was 5 years old (now 7) and Rebecca, 42, was pregnant with her second child Imogen, who is now 2 years old. Ryan, 43, who is an electrician by trade, said: “We realised that we could get so much more for our money if we took on a property that needed a lot of work and could be extended. When we came across our current home, we could see that a number of houses on the same street had an extension, which was very appealing to us. It took about five years before we seriously started looking into it, by this time my wife was pregnant with our second daughter and we really needed the extra space.”

Doors & Windows 47 They worked with a local architect who drew up plans for a single-storey extension to create a large, open-plan kitchen and living room with three VELUX roof windows to provide as much daylight and ventilation throughout the day as possible. To access the garden easily, they also added bi-fold doors - a hugely important feature for the couple who enjoy spending time outside with their two young children. Local builders carried out the renovation work, which took a couple of months, with Ryan doing the electrics. They installed three VELUX INTEGRA® white-painted roof windows with rain sensors and remote controls providing easy opening and closing of the roof windows and the blinds. They chose a polyurethane finish that’s recommended for rooms prone to humidity like kitchens as the roof windows have no visible joints, ensuring an easy to clean and moisture resistant finish. Ryan said: “The extension has really transformed how we all spend time together. We love taking turns to cook while the other person relaxes and watches TV or plays with the girls and helps them with their homework at the big kitchen table. The roof windows add so much daylight and air flow throughout the day. The rain sensors are great as we don’t need to worry about closing them on a hot, sunny day when we leave the house. Living in the UK, the weather can change in an instant so it’s great to have the reassurance that they will close automatically if the rain comes on when we’re out. We also chose dark grey blinds to tie in with the interiors of the kitchen, which is gloss grey and white.” The couple are already planning a loft conversion next year to add another bedroom and en-suite.
