INDUSTRY NEWS

Word of mouth training regime led to warehouse worker’s 14 m fall A logistics management company has been sentenced over the death of an employee who plunged 14 m from his material handling vehicle in Northamptonshire. to alert drivers to nearby controllers. The operators’ driving positions necessitated them turning 180 degrees to see through the rear window while reversing.

Andrej Grzeszczak was working at Great Bear Distribution’s premises in Desborough on 14 January 2016 when his vehicle was struck by another warehouse operations controller working in the same aisle. Grzeszczak’s vehicle toppled and he fell, sustaining fatal injuries. Great Bear Distribution pleaded guilty to breaching s 2(1) of the Health and Safety and Work Act and was fined £323,000 plus £30,000 costs. Northampton Crown Court was told there was no electronic or physical system to prevent two vehicles entering the same aisle. Nor did the vehicles have sensors

The company had failed to provide adequate training for its operations controllers, which the court considered to be a significant fault and directly causative of the accident because operatives ignored prompts on the computer system used to control vehicles that showed when one was already in an aisle. Shirley Plenderleith, head of public services at Kettering Borough Council, which brought the prosecution, said: “While Great Bear Distribution had numerous health and safety policies and procedures in place, they had failed to recognise that their operations controllers were being trained by word of mouth rather than through a structured and supervised training process. As a result, a culture had been introduced

which allowed a key safety control to be ignored. “By ignoring a clear warning on the operations system that Mr Grzesczak’s vehicle was already in the aisle, another vehicle was sent in and the collision occurred. This sad loss of a life is a clear demonstration to all businesses that proper structured training of all staff is key to a safe working environment for staff and others.” After the accident Great Bear Distribution, which says it “puts employees’ wellbeing at the heart of its culture”, installed a new version of the operations software, increased the number of CCTV cameras in the depot to 95, improved lighting on site, reviewed training and improved the visibility of vehicles and their controllers The company operates more than 7 million sq ft of warehousing space and an inhouse distribution fleet of more than 300 commercial vehicles.

Depressed workers with supportive managers take less time off Employees with depression who feel they are supported by their managers are less likely to take time off work than those whose bosses do not talk to them about their condition, a recent study from the London School of Economics and Political Science has found. Researchers examined survey responses of more than 16,000 employees and managers in 15 countries, including Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea and the US as well as seven in Europe, including Great Britain. They looked at the relationship between the way managers tackle depression and workplace

productivity. Findings showed that on average, people who lived in countries where managers avoided talking to them about their depression took an additional 4.1 days off work.

“It may be that a supportive manager is most important in helping employees to remain motivated and feel valued while performing their duties in the workplace,” the researchers said.

On the other hand, countries with a greater prevalence of bosses who actively offered to help employees who were depressed were associated with lower absence levels.

“Working in a setting where managers actively avoid employees with depression on the other hand may encourage avoidant behaviour among those employees, resulting in a tendency to take more days off work.”

Absenteeism was assessed using the question: “The last time you experienced depression, how many working days did you have to take off work because of your depression?”

The study, “Is Manager Support Related to Workplace Productivity for People with Depression?”, published in the BMJ, noted that managers in Asian countries tended to avoid talking about mental health.

Bonfire night funfair injury leads to £30,000 fine for Cambridge charity Cambridge City Council reviewed the charity’s planning arrangements and, taking advice from the HSE, decided to cancel the event. At Peterborough Magistrates’ Court last week, Cambridge Live pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act and was fined £30,000, plus costs of £6654. Matt Gowen, for the defence, said there had been “a wholesale change” at Cambridge Live since the incident. A process had been introduced for closing footpaths across the common during the setup and take-down of events, in line with the HSE improvement notice.

A charity set up by Cambridge City Council to hold live events has been fined £30,000 after a cyclist was struck by a fairground lorry during the set-up for a funfair held alongside the city’s annual Bonfire Night fireworks display. The accident, which resulted in a woman in her 50s losing her leg, took place on 4 November 2015 at Midsummer Common, Cambridge. According to the BBC, the cyclist was stationary when she was struck and became trapped under the lorry carrying dodgems. She received serious leg and abdominal injuries, spending several months in hospital where she underwent surgery. The accident also caused psychological trauma. The bonfire event went ahead as planned but organisers

cancelled the associated funfair, on the grounds that it would be inappropriate for it to go ahead. The HSE issued an improvement notice on 10 December 2015 that highlighted segregation failings, saying that Cambridge Live had failed to organise the set-up and take-down of events “in a way that allows pedestrians and vehicles to circulate in a safe manner”. The notice required compliance by 17 June 2016. However, in advance of the annual Midsummer Fair in June 2016, also organised by Cambridge Live,

“Following the incident we have invested heavily in reviewing our procedures and consequently have added additional safeguards to avoid any incident of this type occurring in the future” A spokesperson for Cambridge Live

The magistrate noted that a substantial fine would have an impact on the Cambridge community, but said there were a number of people using the common at the time of the incident who were at risk. A spokesperson for Cambridge Live said: “Following the incident we have invested heavily in reviewing our procedures and consequently have added additional safeguards to avoid any incident of this type occurring in the future. “We very much regret those failures and the injury that was occasioned as a result.” Subscribe to Health and Safety at Work magazineCambridge Live also organises the Cambridge Folk Festival, and two events venues in the city, the Corn Exchange and Guildhall. In 2016/17, 272,488 people attended Cambridge Live Events, according to the company’s annual review. It had a turnover of £5.66m in 2016/17, of which £4.39m was income from charitable activities and £1.1m from trading activities such as catering.

HSENI stamp on firms with insufficient safeguards for metal working fluids’ work

Waste industry SIG launches ‘personal’ campaign to improve sector’s safety record The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) has launched a year-long campaign to improve the waste and recycling sector’s poor safety record. Waste industry SIG launches ‘personal’ campaign to improve sector’s safety record Headed by the CIWM’s health, safety and wellbeing special interest group (SIG), the “This time it’s personal” campaign aims to help members of the waste sector’s professional body improve workplace standards by challenging colleagues’ behaviour and recognising common human factors.

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) has warned manufacturers and engineering companies who do not sufficiently manage exposure to metal working fluids (MWF) that they could face enforcement action. HSENI stamp on firms with insufficient safeguards for metal working fluids’ work

Designed to instill greater individual responsibility for OSH, the campaign also aims to encourage operatives to consider their responsibilities for wellbeing, use of personal protective equipment, traffic safety, and plant and equipment use.

The HSENI has announced a focused inspection campaign for October and businesses will be visited to check that they have sufficient safeguards in place. The inspection checklist includes making sure a suitable risk assessment is available for controlling risks and that machinery is adequately guarded.

The campaign, launched on 12 September, will feature a topic a month and will also seek to highlight good practice methods, encourage operatives to follow them and to benchmark themselves against good performers. The CIWM SIG also wants to encourage members to share successful workplace initiatives.

Inspectors will also check that businesses hold current local exhaust ventilation (LEV) records to prove that the system has been examined in the past 14 months, which is a legal requirement.

Earlier this year, the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) published Common Human Factors Underlying Worker Fatalities in the Waste and Recycling Industry, which found that knowledge-based errors appeared to be the most significant human factor underlying fatal incidents.

Businesses will need to show inspectors that they have either prevented or adequately controlled the exposure to MWF by inhalation and skin contact. Sometimes referred to as suds, coolants, slurry or soap, MWFs are used during the machining of metals to provide lubrication and cooling. As part of next month’s inspections, employers will also need to demonstrate the quality of MWF has been maintained and that they have taken measures to minimise the bacterial contamination of metalworking and associated washing fluids. Inspectors will expect businesses to show they have carried out health surveillance where necessary. The HSENI has warned that manufactures and engineering firms that have failed to comply could be handed improvement and prohibition notices to improve standards. Exposure to MWFs has been linked to serious and debilitating conditions, including dermatitis, occupational asthma, bronchitis, irritation of the upper respiratory tract and, in rare cases, a more serious lung disease called extrinsic allergic alveolitis.

HSE statistics show that the fatal injury rate for waste and recycling workers is 15 times greater than the average rate across all industries over the fiveyear period 2012/13-2016/17, even though the sector accounts for about 0.4% of employees in Great Britain. The research identified two human factors areas to prioritise to reduce worker fatalities – the design, use and maintenance of equipment and safety management systems.

Safety, it’s a mat

Kärcher expands its range of safety vacuum cleaners and pr Developed for use in the construction trade and industrial environments where there are large volumes of fine dust, this new generation of robust, wet and dry vacuum cleaners quickly make achieving maximum cleaning performance easy and safe. Featuring the new sensor-controlled, automatic filter cleaning system (Tact), the vacuum cleaners detect when the flat pleated filter needs to be cleaned and quickly reverses the air flow, to blow air through the filter, enabling continuous operation for the user without any loss of suction power. They also optimally select the filter cleaning interval, depending on the quantity of dust being vacuumed: this enables large quantities of dust to be collected without the need for manual filter cleaning. Suitable for collecting large volumes of safe as well as hazardous substances, such as asbestos dust, the PTFE-H flat pleated filter (HEPA 13) used in the H class models, is the first cleanable filter in a wet and dry vacuum cleaner for this dust class: with a filtration level of 99.995%.

As well as the outstanding features of our existing NT vacuum cleaners, these new models also include: electronic filter detection and air flow monitoring, so the vacuum cleaner only starts when the filter is correctly installed, which ensures optimal safety for the user. If the air flow falls below a certain value, a warning signal sounds that indicates a blockage or full container. Thanks to its grounding conductor and conductive accessories users are effectively protected against an electrostatic charge, which can occur when vacuuming dry dusts. Sturdy housing with a bumper at the front and large metal castors provide ultimate stability, transportability and a long service life – making it easier to move the equipment from site to site. The flat, non-slip top provides a secure hold for the user’s toolbox, and slots on the machine allow accessories to be stored securely. Additionally, new bayonet locks and large clips on the floor nozzle allow the quick change of accessories between wet and dry applications, without the need for any tools. The suction hose now connects directly into the container head allowing maximum use of the container space, and a significant reduction in noise when vacuuming small quantities of dust make these machines a powerful ally.

FIRE SAFETY

Protecting the with smart technology

The sheer scale of modern facilities, density of occupation and growing user demands present particular challenges for fire safety and protection. The speed of detection is crucial as it enables users to intervene at the earliest possible opportunity and prevent further escalation. Intelligent smoke, flame, heat and carbon monoxide detectors will detect minute smoke particles and will provide an instant fire alert. Importantly, they will also determine false fire phenomena due to issues such as toasters, poor housekeeping, airborne particles, welding, humidity and temperature change, and will not alarm in these instances. The impact of false alarms on the workplace is immense, as lost working hours and the upheaval of evacuating premises adds up to significant financial loss. Modern smart devices can even be adapted to reflect environmental changes in room usage. In the event of a fire or major alert, rapid and orderly evacuation is of the highest priority. Emergency evacuation highlights the need for greater control during a major incident and voice alarm systems play an integral role in managing these critical situations. Studies reveal that many people do not know how to react to conventional alarms such as bells or sirens. Many assume that it is a test or false alarm; others remain confused and unsure of what to do. Comprehensive messages about the nature of the incident, and the appropriate action to take, using clear language will minimise the potential for panic or confusion. Zoned voice alarm involves the delivery of highperformance messaging across multi-level, multi-occupancy buildings, offering controlled evacuation where selected floors are evacuated, while others are simultaneously alerted. Evidence has shown that multiple alerts are more effective; the combination of audio and media such as SMS has a greater success rate. Automatic coloured lighting systems can then be employed to direct personnel to the most appropriate emergency exit routes to further ensure personnel safety during the evacuation. It is vital to only evacuate those at risk and this combination of verbal instructions, messaging alerts and wayfinding will maximise safety procedures.

Learning

Could Be a Lifesaver GEZE UK has revised a piece of lifesaving learning - its popular RIBA-approved CPD on specifying, installing and maintaining ironmongery for fire doors.

The 40-minute seminar explains what fire doors are, identifies their various components, how they work, the standards and regulations which surround them and why smoke is so dangerous. It is intended for Chartered members of RIBA but is also suitable for facilities managers, property managers and architectural ironmongers and completely updates the 2016 version. It incorporates the latest statistics for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, including the number of people that die from smoke inhalation every year. It also highlights the latest regulations.

Andy Howland, sales and marketing director for GEZE UK said: “This is an essential development module because fire doors can save lives. More people die from smoke inhalation than fire itself, especially when smoke can travel freely through a building. “Understanding the effectiveness of fire doors, where they can be placed and how they should be maintained, could ultimately save people’s lives.” CPD presentations can be arranged at architects’ practices at a time to suit (usually lunchtime but breakfast seminars or afternoon sessions can be accommodated). To find out more or to book a CPD seminar, email cpd@geze.com or visit www.geze.co.uk/geze/cpd.

RIBA Chartered Architects are obliged to undertake a minimum of 35 hours a week to maintain their competence. The revised CPD fits into the core curriculum subjects of: Design, Construction and Technology and Health, Safety and Wellbeing for the General Awareness knowledge level. Other presentations offered by GEZE UK, include EN 16005 - Safeguarding Pedestrians from Accidents at Power Operated Doorsets; Glass Door Assemblies - Selection and Specification; Designing Effective Natural Heat and S m o k e Ve n t i l a t i o n a n d Removing Barriers to Access and Air Pollution.

Health and Safety in The

Reactive Maintenance Health and safety in the workplace is a key consideration for any employer - reactive maintenance is by far the best way to resolve small issues before they escalate into something more serious. Unresolved maintenance issues can result in health and safety concerns with the potential to bring your business to a standstill – affecting your valued customers and profit margin. So, knowing what to look out for is of paramount importance, this will help you to identify and solve any issues before they escalate. Facilities Management provider, MSL have listed their most common health and safety maintenance issues for businesses to be on the lookout for:

AC Units Whilst air-conditioning is a must have in most work environments, an unmaintained AC unit can lead to a range of health implications including respiratory conditions. Follow these simple steps to protect both yourself and your employees against AC air pollution: •

Replace your AC unit at least every 10 years.

Have annual maintenance checks from a HVAC professional.

Regularly change your unit’s air filters inline with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Open windows as much as possible – this will allow fresh air to circulate and eliminate pollutants.

Visible Pipe Rust Monitor any rusting on pipes within your building. If you spot rust, ensure that those pipes are replaced immediately. Rusting pipes will soon start to erode, causing the pipe to burst, which can cause chaos in the workplace, forcing you to replace items damaged by the flood, as well as costly clean up fees.

Leaks

Mould and Mildew

Leaks are a huge red flag that there is an issue within your building – any leaks should be investigated and dealt with immediately. Leaks can occur for any number of reasons ranging from improper roof insulation to a lack of maintenance and can cause a range of health and safety risks, especially if left unresolved as this can lead to mould and mildew growth.

Mould and mildew are often indicators of long running leaks, which will not only cause visible damage but can also impact on the internal structure of your building. In addition to causing structural damage, mould and mildew can lead to health conditions including congestion, rhinitis, inflammations and asthma.

Industry News

Workplace Cracks in Walls or Ceilings Whilst some cracks may be cosmetic in nature, others can indicate that there is a structural problem with your building. Look out for the following signs to identify a serious structural issue and investigate immediately: •

Stepped cracking of brickwork - this could be a sign of subsidence.

Broken or cracked lintels over doors and windows.

Stress cracks between an extension and the original building or party walls.

Creating a safe working environment is an ongoing task and when juggling so many to-do lists, it’s easy to put off vital maintenance monitoring but to reduce the risk of safety issues arising, prevention is much better than the cure. MSL advise businesses to act immediately if any of the above issues occur – for further information on facilities management MSL operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, right across the UK, Ireland and parts of Europe: www.msl-ltd.co.uk

Act Smart and Save the Date GEZE UK will demonstrate some ‘joined up thinking’ when it takes part at this year’s Smart Buildings Show (7-8 November 2018) at the Barbican, London. Its stand, F3, Hall 2, is a third bigger than last year and will feature the latest integrated products that can form part of intelligent building networks. By using smart building interfaces such as the GEZE Cockpit, IQ box KNX or the IO 420, modular solutions can be applied to achieve natural ventilation and climate control, security and fire safety. In turn, they can be integrated into building management systems which ‘talk’ to each other for complete control – often remotely. Using GEZE’s range of automatic door and window systems, these ‘hubs’ can transform premises into smart buildings – making them more pleasant environments in which to live and work – conditions that help people feel more happy, healthy and productive. Said GEZE UK managing director, Kaz Spiewakowski: “Our presence at the UK’s leading dedicated smart building event will be bigger and better this year.

“We have some ground-breaking products to demonstrate and in GEZE UK’s 30th year, we wish to make our presence felt and become firmly established as the ‘go to’ supplier for those looking to create the next generation of buildings.” As the only company in the UK to offer both door and window solutions, GEZE is keen to be at the forefront of the ‘smart revolution’ allowing building performance to be optimised, costs reduced and environments improved through responsive and multifunctional systems. Visitors to the stand will see products such as the Slimchain, IO 420, IQ box KNX, IQ locks, WS 1000 touch screen controller, Flat scan sensor, the GEZE Cockpit – which will be available in the UK very soon – and a first look at the Perlan AUT NT, a cost-effective alternative to the manual sliding door system - ideal for use in difficult-to-access areas which can help reduce accidents.

Crittall windows help keep troubled youngsters safe

A state-of-the-art residential unit for vulnerable children and adolescents in the North West of England features Crittall’s Fendor CleanVent security windows. Junction 17, designed by architects Gilling Dodd, was commissioned by Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust to provide facilities for the care of 24 inpatients aged between 13 and 17. The unit, at Prestwich, is a Tier 4 CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) facility for young people with significant mental health needs and who may pose a high risk to themselves and others. Typical symptoms or conditions may include self-harming behaviour and psychosis. For this reason windows in rooms to which patients have access must have an antiligature feature. Junction 17 has been designed with full input from the professional users of the building with the intention of providing a modern, uplifting and non-institutional appearance. In addition to the inpatient accommodation there is an intensive care suite, therapy and activity spaces and a fully-equipped college and learning zone. The aluminium CleanVent windows specified complement this modern, non institutional feel while satisfying the anti-ligature requirements, meeting the security level of the building as well as providing natural

ventilation. Crittall also supplied doors and curtain walling. CleanVent is a unique, patented, sliding security window providing SecureLock access to the protected glazing behind the security mesh. The windows can be internally or externally opened depending on the security lever required. It has been developed as a direct result of feedback from NHS Trusts across the UK and following extensive research and testing.

The Junction 17 facility has met with universal acclaim from staff, patients and families alike with the quality of the spatial design and healing environment attracting particular praise. A detailed post-project evaluation carried out by the Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust concluded that there was improved quality of clinical care, improved patient environment, safety and security. www.crittall-fendor.co.uk

INTRATONE ACCESS CONTROL TECHNOLOGY INSTALLED AT OVER 900 SITES FOR HOUNSLOW COUNCIL Door entry and access control equipment from Intratone, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers, has been installed at over 900 different sites across Hounslow Council’s estate. The access control systems across the Council’s residential and commercial portfolio had become obsolete with the desire to move from keys to a fob-based system. Residents had been complaining at the delays in receiving new keys – in some cases taking up to six weeks for them to be delivered. New fobs can now be obtained straight away by residents when visiting their local housing office through the new cloud-based technology. Since late 2016 the Intratone fob readers have been installed at low and highrise apartment blocks and Council offices, commercial buildings and operational sites, and complaints have dropped significantly. Ian Williams, Electrical Engineer for Hounslow Council is in no doubt as to the benefits of the new Intratone proximity readers: “We hadn’t heard of Intratone before it was recommended by the installer. So far, we have been very impressed – although it is a sizeable investment for the Council initially, the build and technology of the readers means that they will last for at least ten years. “At one point the fob programming was carried out by two full-time members of staff who would visit site daily to program residents’ fobs. This can all now be programmed remotely by the relevant housing officers at the local housing office which will be a large long-term saving to the council.” The cloud-based fob-reader system has significantly enhanced control over who has access, for how long and to which properties. Because it is cloud-based, changes made to key fobs are almost immediate and can be facilitated from anywhere where there is internet access – whether that’s at a PC, laptop or a smartphone on site.

“The simplicity of the database is such that some of our concierge and caretakers are being trained to manage the system themselves which frees up even more of the engineer’s time,” Ian adds. “With the older technology residents were also able to copy fobs in some local shops which did not give the council full control over who could access certain blocks.

applications: “Our access control and door entry systems are installed across Social Housing, Private Properties and HAs all over the UK and Europe, and prove popular for residents of all ages, but especially the elderly, because they are very easy to use. Installers and customers also like them because they are very easy to install and competitively priced.”

“The new Intratone fobs have similar technology to an Oyster card – you cannot rewrite or copy them so when someone tries to use a copied fob it sends the system a notification. We can check the system when a certain fob has been used so we can assist Police when they have been trying to track someone’s whereabouts.”

Intratone is one of Europe’s largest access controls specialists and manufactures a range of costeffective door-entry and access control solutions designed around the customer need. Its systems are installed across a range of Housing Association, Social Housing and Private Properties throughout the UK and Europe.

Daniel Bacon, Area Sales Manager at Intratone says its products are flexible enough to suit a wide range of sites and

ERA LAUNCHES LOCKDOWN – EMERGENCY DOOR SECURITY

E

RA, the UK’s leading home security specialist, has launched Lockdown, the UK’s first emergency barricade device designed to provide high performance security in the event of a threatening situation. ERA’s Lockdown product is designed for use in commercial/community settings with high footfall from schools and hospitals to travel hubs, offices, workplaces, hotels, shopping centres and leisure/ tourist attractions including theatres, cinemas, pubs, bars and restaurants. Lockdown is simple and easy to fit (no fumbling with keys or padlocks) making doors inaccessible to intruders and creating a safe hiding place for civilians in the event of an attack. Robust and lightweight, Lockdown is available for both single and double doors, whether inward or outward swinging and fitted with or without traditional locks.

ERA’s Group Marketing and Innovation Director, Will Butler, said; “Sadly, we now live in a world where terror isn’t a distant menace, it can strike at the heart of our community. Public and businesses are being advised by the government and associated bodies to be extra vigilant and pre-plan how they might react if caught up in a threatening situation. The over-arching advice being to RUN, HIDE, TELL and when hiding, barricade yourself in.

“For example, we are seeing dummyruns in schools where pupils are being taught what to do in certain scenarios and the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) has updated safety advice for employees suggesting that they develop dynamic lockdown procedures and use secondary devices for ‘invacuation’ rather than evacuation to barricade people in a room safely and keep the external threat out. “Here at ERA, community safety is at the heart of our products, so we are very pleased by the overwhelmingly positive response received at the Security and Counter Terror Expo at London’s Olympia earlier this year.”

Tested to PAS24 impact r esistance standards, single door Lockdown fits doors from 650mm-1100mm width, weighs 4kg and takes seconds to fit. The double door option fits doors up to 60mm, weighs 1.6kg and again takes seconds to create a secure barricade to outside entry. Pricing for the Lockdown varies and depends on numbers and configurations required. For further information on ERA Lockdown and other security solutions, visit www.eraeverywhere.com. INDUSTRY NEWS

Mark Barter, Sales Director for Charcon, comments: “Due to the high traffic volumes coming into Birmingham city centre each day, the A34 could only close for four days to install the segregation unit. Having experience of delivering this type of product on a large scale before, we were able to confidently hit the ground running and ensure phase one of the project was delivered on time and within budget.”

Charcon Hard Landscaping, a division of Aggregate Industries, has joined Birmingham’s Cycle Revolution by supplying 955l/m of its award-winning Cycle Kerb for the city’s new, multi-million pound cycle highway.

Birmingham City Council’s vision for its Cycle Revolution is to make cycling an everyday way to travel by improving road safety and cycling conditions, with 10% of all trips in the city to be made by bike by 2033[1]. The initiative includes creating high quality cycle routes on two key roads into Birmingham: the A34 and A38. Amey, the company delivering the cycling infrastructure improvements in partnership with Birmingham City Council, have installed 299l/m of Charcon’s innovative Cycleway Segregation Unit to create the first section of a 4km, two-way, fully segregated route which shields cyclists from passing traffic, even when on the blind side of a lorry or bus. The standard, high-performance segregation unit has been used for

the majority of this section. And whilst it delivers visually, a new kerb featuring the aesthetics of granite was created especially for certain conservation areas which demanded enhanced visual appeal. The bespoke design features a bull-nose edge running along the carriageway, capable of withstanding vehicular impact, while a full batter profile on the cycleway side significantly reduces the chance of cyclists catching a pedal. A frog in the base of the unit improves the key into the bedding material, facilitating a swift installation as the units can simply be dropped into place – an attractive design feature for contractors under pressure to minimise impact to traffic, residents and businesses while works are ongoing.

Due to the swift delivery and installation of phase one, a further 656l/m of Charcon’s Cycleway Segregation Unit has been specified for phase two of the project. Chris Harris, Project Manager for Amey comments: “The sales team at Charcon have been very supportive, ensuring all units are delivered to site on time. This has helped us keep to our strict programme, reducing disruption to the people of Birmingham as we deliver a highquality and sustainable cycle route for the city.” With Birmingham ranked as the third most populated urban area in the United Kingdom[2], its 1.26 million residents[3] are on a daily basis exposed to the detrimental effects of traffic congestion and man-made air pollution. Despite this, the city holds its position as the top UK regional city for quality of life[4], with initiatives such as Birmingham Cycle Revolution specifically engineered to make the city healthier, greener, safer and less congested. Mark Barter adds: “The trend for cycling has increased significantly in the UK and, as a result, the number of cycle-related incidents on our roads has also increased with fatalities in London reaching 33 at its peak. Since our segregation system was installed for London’s Cycle Super Highway (CS2), the number of accidents has been reduced and we look forward to seeing a similar result in Birmingham.” For further information, visit charcon.com or contact the team via 01335 372 222 or landscaping@aggregate.com.

Cutting-edge security solutions help protect two star-studded events in Blackpool Visitors to Blackpool who attended the annual illuminations switch-on, and a concert by pop legend Britney Spears, received the highest level of protection from an innovative new barrier solution. the access gate allowed for greater flexibility in allowing authorised vehicles through to the promenade area. Once the season ends, the gate will be removed and placed into storage. The two permanent bollards will be fitted with an aesthetically pleasing sleeve until required again the following season. Glenn Cooper, CEO of ATG Access, said: “The recent events that took place in Blackpool are a fantastic example of how temporary security can seamlessly provide maximum protection, without creating a ‘fortress mentality’.

Surface Guard, which was developed by the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of road blockers, bollards and vehicle barrier systems, ATG Access, was installed around the Headland Arena, located in front of the iconic Blackpool Tower, to protect the 20,000-strong crowd. The security solution has been specifically designed in response to the surge of recent vehicle attacks that have taken place across Europe, and has been tested in accordance with the IWA 14 crash test standard. It is capable of withstanding an attack from a 7,200kg lorry travelling at 32 kph, and its lightweight modular

design makes it quick to install, transport and easy to store. The system was deployed by one of ATG’s installation partners – Stadium TM extremely quickly and efficiently, taking four men just under an hour to install, ensuring minimal disruption to event organisers. In order to deal with the vast crowds arriving at the Britney Spears concert, the semi-permeable design of Surface Guard allowed for easy pedestrian access. This, paired with the neutral design, helped avoid a ‘fortress mentality’ to promote a relaxed atmosphere. In addition to installing the Surface Guard solution, ATG Access developed a bespoke gate to secure the

promenade’s tram tracks and ensure the whole width of the promenade was secure from any potential vehicle attacks. Created specifically for this location, the gate attaches to two permanent bollards which were also installed for the event, allowing the area to be accessed when required by trams or emergency service vehicles. Whereas Surface Guard is temporarily fixed,

“For such a busy seaside town that runs public events on a regular basis, ensuring that visitors feel safe is imperative. For this reason, our Surface Guard system and bespoke security access gate for easy pedestrian and tram accessibility will help protect event goers not only this season but for seasons to come.” For more information, please visit: www.atgaccess.com

Striking a balance between security, aesthetics and budget Jacksons Fencing Research Highlights Challenges Facing Architects When Installing School Fencing • A third of architects say that schools have weak points in their perimeters and entrances • Multiple entry points are the biggest access control challenge affecting schools (90%) • Nearly all architects are familiar with Secured by Design standards (95%) • 71% of refurbishment specifications are identical to the original ones Jacksons Fencing, the UK perimeter security solution provider, recently released insights into architects’ views on school safety from its research report ‘Protecting the Future’. Taken alongside teachers’ perspectives, the report highlights significant differences between the views of architects and school management as well as some reassuring common ground. On average, almost two thirds of architects know of schools being affected by fencing and gate issues (60%). While a similar amount of head teachers have

commissioned new access solutions at least once (63%) and over three quarters have had their perimeter inspected within the past five years (80%), these problems are clearly not being resolved. The majority of architects (71%) find that school security refurbishments use the original specifications with some value engineering while a significant number know of schools down specifying to save cost (17%). This is despite head teachers’ greatest concerns being unauthorised exits and entrances (30% and 25%), both of which can be prevented with well-designed and appropriately specified fencing and gates. Specification evasion Architects identify budget as the greatest challenge when installing school fencing (84%), followed by restricted installation times (48%) and working where children are present (39%). The high number of schools keeping the same specifications or down specifying may be a reflection of this concern for cost and minimum disruption. A perimeter’s price tag is not the most significant concern for schools, however. Performance is the highest priority (73%) for teachers, followed closely by security ratings and accredited products (68%). These come ahead of both lifetime and initial costs (64% and 59% respectively). Setting the standards Recent bomb threats sent to schools across the UK reinforced the crucial role that school staff play in protecting pupils from harm. Head teachers identify that creating a positive learning environment (86%) and keeping the school community safe (82%) as the most important parts of their positions. Ensuring their security solutions meet industry standards is one way of fulfilling both these aims. A third of architects are seeing Secured by Design (SBD) and LPS 1175 standards increasingly specified (31%). This is complemented with 95% being familiar with SBD. While change

is on the horizon, there is work to be done. Currently under half of architects know about LPS 1175 (47%). While head teachers are concerned about the safety of their pupils, 39% don’t know where to go to find out more about school security and access control. They do, however, have some awareness of safety guidelines, with half being familiar with the recommended height for school fences. A similar number know of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) guidelines, which apply primarily to playgrounds. An inside perspective Overall, architects’ views on school security are in line with teachers, with 32% and 29% respectively acknowledge weak points in the perimeter. There is also agreement between both parties about which safety issues are afflicting schools the most: multiple entrances, having difficult to see areas and having more than one building. Architects, however, are more aware of these problems than teachers, with a 40% average difference between their responses. This disparity was especially marked where 72% of architects said that aging fencing is an issue, compared to 16% of teachers.

“While there is a healthy level of agreement between architects and teachers on what the key school security issues are, our research reveals some concerning differences.” ^ Jacksons Baribican ® Imperial Double Leaf Gates and Fencing

SECURITY

^ Jacksons Euroguard ® Flatform Double Leaf Gates and Fencing

Security Consultant at Jacksons Fencing Cris Francis comments: “While there is a healthy level of agreement between architects and teachers on what the key school security issues are, our research reveals some concerning differences. Despite schools prioritising the performance of their fencing and gates, architects are up against stringent budgets that lead to maintaining outdated solutions or down specifying. Schools need to find a way of balancing cost with adequately ensuring children’s safety. Part of the problem might be that without a professional understanding of design and security, school staff can’t appreciate the impact of perimeter issues to the same extent as architects. “Architects also have a greater awareness of safety standards and LPS 1175 certified products. By using their expertise to help schools choose the most appropriate solution for their specific risks and needs, they can help safeguard staff and students alike from future harm.”

More than one in ten employees in the construction industry have purposefully had a nap at work • 88% in the sector are not able to speak openly with their line manager about how tiredness is impacting their performance at work • 71% don’t believe there are clear health and safety regulations in place at work • Over a third say their mental wellbeing is reduce when they feel fatigued New research from the leading health and wellbeing provider, Westfield Health, has found more than one in ten (16%) employees in the construction industry have purposefully taken a nap at work, and over a third (37%) say their mental wellbeing is reduced due to tiredness and fatigue. The study which examines how tiredness and feeling fatigued impacts on performance at work, also shows 88% of workers in the industry don’t feel confident in speaking with their line manager about how it is impacting on their performance.

in the construction industry, especially given many roles involve operating and handling heavy machinery, and working on busy sites with high level of health and safety risks. “It’s not just being overworked and lack of sleep that can cause us to feel fatigued. Extreme tiredness happens as a result of a number of factors including mental health and diet.”

Fatigue, which is defined as extreme tiredness resulting from mental or physical exertion or illness, is an epidemic which is stretching beyond work for employees in the construction industry, with 56% of workers saying it is affecting them at home too.

So what’s the solution? 16% of employees in the industry believe their employer could do more to reduce the risk of accidents and mistakes at work due to stress. Currently 85% believe their colleagues, including management, do not understand the potential consequences of fatigue and lack of sleep and only 8% say their workplace would accept tiredness or fatigue as a genuine reason to call in sick.

More than a third (37%) say they have lost concentration at work due to fatigue and tiredness, and almost half (44%) of employees in the construction industry regularly turn up to their jobs feeling too tired to work.

Richard continues: “Fatigue and tiredness is an issue that employers and particularly line managers should not overlook. Employers in the construction industry need to ensure there are clear health and safety regulations in place around fatigue.

The effect of fatigue is broad with people admitting to making errors and being forgetful (37%), being short tempered with colleagues (34%), drifting to sleep (23%) and even drifting off whilst driving (18%).

“The importance of rest time both at work and at home should be taken seriously and encouraged by employers, and fatigue should be considered just as important as any other physical injury or illness.”

ALTO PODIUM LEADS THE FIELD The Alto BS 8620 podium has been shortlisted for two awards this year – The London Construction Awards Health and Safety Solution of the Year and the HAE Construction Product of the Year. When you look at the product, you can see why. When the BS 8620 standard was released, significantly upping the game for podium safety, Alto took their usual thorough approach to the project and redesigned their podium from the ground up to ensure that the new product really was a step in the right direction. They then went the extra mile and had the podium tested by an external laboratory to confirm that it really did meet all of the standard’s requirements. The result is a product with an impressive array of beneficial real improvements for the safety conscious site operator. • This is the first podium ever to be externally tested and certified to a recognised standard. A huge increase in strength and stability is required to pass the enhanced tests. • No wheels are in contact with ground when the unit is deployed – high friction rubber feet only. The podium cannot be “surfed” or “bunny hopped”. Its anti-slide capability was tested on mirror glass. • The stabilisers are permanently attached with preset deployment positions – they cannot be lost or omitted and a simple visual check shows whether they are correctly deployed or not. • There are no spring “saloon” gates to trap fingers/ clothing/tool belts. • The top tread on all configurations is a wide step – not a rung, to minimise risk of missing footing. • There are no horizontal bars on side protection that operatives can stand on. When you add the operational benefits of the unique booster system, the legendary Alto durability and fold flat storage with all components stowed, this starts to look like a quantum leap in low level access safety. Leading Safety Upwards Over a third of all injuries reported annually are caused as a result of a slip or trip at the workplace. Skyhook GB Limited, established in 2004, has come up with a revolutionary product specifically designed to prevent these unfortunate mishaps. The Skyhook concept has been widely accepted in the construction industry due to its incredible effectiveness and convenience. The Skyhook support system has been sold to over 150 companies throughout the UK, including some of the biggest names in manufacturing. The ground-breaking product is used as a form of temporary support, as it is hooked over items such as floor joists or ceiling grids, and the fixing hole in the top enables it to be screwed upwards onto fixtures. If users are unable to get a fixing overhead, the support can be fixed through the side hole, which keeps the trailing cables away from the floor, eliminating this potential safety hazard. Also available is the Medi Hook, which serves great purpose in medical centres, because it’s designed to hang from the bed rail to hold tubing away from the floor. Skyhook GB Limited has proudly announced two new additions to their range; the Multi Hook and Extendable Tower Stands. The Multi Hook is similar to the Skyhook but the additional loop featured has the capability to accommodate multiple cables. The Extendable Tower Stand can be raised up to 3 metres in height and is made from a steel box section. With this item, multiple cables can be carried at various heights, because of the attached non-conductible plastic head. This incredibly innovative range consists of incredibly versatile and flexible products which make work environments significantly safer. Skyhook GB Limited is consistently striving towards raising standards, and they trust that their new additions will continue to assist companies in the construction industry. The Vital Importance Material in Prescription > By uvex

Almost 70% of people in the UK wear glasses or contact lenses some or all the time, the third highest proportion in Europe, and this number is steadily rising.

S

afety eyewear suppliers are increasingly providing prescription safety spectacles or goggles to safeguard people’s eyes in the workplace, since ordinary prescription glasses do not offer adequate protection. Amongst many features that must be considered when buying protective eyewear, such as fit, comfort, suitability and style, the correct lens material is one of the most important. It is crucial to match the correct lens material to the job in hand, understanding the requirements of the wearer and the hazards they may be exposed to.

CR39 For everyday glasses and users of visual display units (VDUs), CR39

(Columbia Resin 39) lenses made of plastic polymer are commonly used, replacing the glass lenses of old, which were thicker, heavier and shattered easily. CR39 lenses have some advantages, such as being lightweight and offering good chemical resistance. However, CR39 does not have the impact strength of new, polycarbonate lenses, and is therefore not suitable for hazardous workplace environments where impact may pose a risk, since it may break and shatter. In addition, a UV coating must be added to CR39 lenses to protect the eyes from the sun’s harmful rays that can cause cataracts, macular degeneration or other eye diseases. CR39 is also thicker than more recently-developed impact-resistant

lens materials, making spectacles heavier and distorting the appearance of the eyes, rendering them less appealing cosmetically.

Polycarbonate lenses Originally developed for the aerospace industry, polycarbonate is now the ‘go to’ material for safety eyewear. Made by injection moulding, polycarbonate lenses are up to 10 times more impact-resistant than plastic or glass lenses and give high optical quality. They naturally provide 100% protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays without needing a special coating to be added. Polycarbonate lenses have exceptional strength and resilience and will survive the impact of a steel ball travelling at 160 km/

of the Correct Lens Safety Eyewear hr (45 metres per second) without cracking, chipping or breaking. They are 25% thinner and 20% lighter than CR39 lenses, making them more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing for the wearer. Owing to its versatility and robustness, polycarbonate can be used for rimmed, rimless and half-rimmed spectacles, allowing manufacturers to offer a large choice of lens and frame options to wearers. Polycarbonate lenses are slightly more expensive than CR39 lenses, but they are still very affordable, and their benefits more than make up for this. Because polycarbonate is a relatively soft material, which is what makes it flexible and able to absorb energy without fracturing, so a hard, scratch-resistant coating must be applied to the lens to help protect it and prevent surface scratching before use.

Check your glasses Prescription lens wearers may not be aware that some high-street opticians will automatically supply eyewear with CR39 lenses unless polycarbonate is specifically requested, potentially leaving them at risk from impact injuries at work. You can check your glasses by looking at the lens markings, which will be either at the top or on the side of the lens. Look for the letters

‘S’ or ‘F’. If you can see an ‘S’, your glasses are likely to be CR39. In conclusion, it is important to ask the optician which lens material will be supplied in your safety eyewear and to ensure it is the right one for you. Arco, the UK’s leading safety company, is encouraging its customers to embrace technological advancements into their businesses by launching a range of drones that could be used to carry out otherwise hazardous tasks, safely and cost-effectively.

The use of drones within a commercial environment is increasing and is likely to significantly change the working practices of many businesses. According to a recent report, the use of drone technology could drive cost savings of £16bn each year with an estimated 628,000 people working in the future drone economy, including building and programming these new devices.

There are a number of dangerous tasks where the benefits of using drones are already becoming apparent. For example:

Drones are reducing the risk to employees and saving companies time and money.

Building Inspections and Site Surveys – Often building inspections require manual assessments and the construction of scaffolding. Using a drone can help identify problem areas in advance, allowing them to be evaluated and repaired more efficiently. What’s more, drones are becoming more commonly used to inspect land and transport infrastructure, meaning they could eventually replace expensive helicopter use in surveying.

Offshore Oil Rig Inspections - Using drones for offshore oil rig inspections is replacing traditional methods as safety is paramount. Drones allow the largest facilities to be inspected quickly, helping teams to identify any structural weaknesses, scan for hot spots, find gas leaks and more.

Wind Turbine Inspections – Current inspection methods can involve manual checks that require extensive health and safety briefs. Drone usage increases efficiency and reduces excessive downtime for wind turbines.

Agriculture – The agriculture industry has significantly benefitted from the use of drones, especially for thermal monitoring. For example, when inspecting rooftop solar panels of large solar farms, being able to clearly view temperature anomalies allows problem panels to be quickly isolated and fixed keeping energy production at optimum levels. Additionally, these new types of technology are also being utilised for remote crop spraying, with thermal image monitoring technology providing data on plant health and irrigation.

In order to fly a drone commercially a pilot is required to complete drone training and then apply for a Permission for Commercial Operations (PfCO), from the Commercial Aviation Authority (CAA). It is essential those flying the high-tech equipment understand the rules and regulations they must adhere to. To ensure drones have a positive impact in the workplace and are used safely and in accordance with the regulations, customers can purchase Arco’s drone products with training to enable pilots to comply with safety standards. The training courses are provided by an accredited training facility and are available to purchase with or without the drone.
