Portuguese gym chain Vivafit makes move into Asian markets

Women-only fitness franchise Vivafit, headquartered in Portugal, recently continued its rapid expansion with three clubs opening simultaneously in three different markets across a single month: in Pune, India; Atyrau in Kazakhstan; and Dubai. The Pune site is a 180sq m club, with a PT studio and group exercise studio. Aimed at high-class Indians, membership costs the equivalent of €450 a year, paid in advance, including a monthly consultation with a dietitian. This is the first club in Pune and the ninth in India. Vivafit co-founder Pedro Ruiz says he wants to open two more clubs in Pune and 500 more in India.

Previously a public swimming pool, the Atyrau club has been refurbished to include two fitness studios (250sq m and 110sq m) and a 100sq m gym. It targets expats, with a membership price of €283, pre-paid for six months. This is the first site in Kazakhstan and there are plans to develop 24 more.

Miralago provided the equipment for all three clubs.

With a gym and two fitness studios, the Dubai club targets both Emirati nationals and expats with its nonintimidating atmosphere and range of Vivafit and Les Mills classes. Situated on the 10th floor of an office building, it has great views over the city. This is the second club in the city; there are plans for 12 more across the UAE, including nine more in Dubai.

Is a workout actually the best way to train your brain? Typically, the festive period sees various brain training games and gizmos come back into vogue as cerebral stocking fillers, but it may well be that a gym membership is the greatest gift for getting smarter this Christmas. According to new research published in the journal Brain Plasticity, exercise can enhance the development of new brain cells in the adult brain ‒ a process called adult neurogenesis ‒ which play an important role in learning and memory. The study has determined that mice that which spent time running on wheels not only developed twice the normal number of new neurons, but also showed an increased ability to distinguish new objects from familiar objects. Our research indicates that exerciseinduced increase in neurogenesis improves pattern separation by supporting unique and detailed long-term representations of similar but nevertheless different memory items, explained lead investigator Josef Bischofberger, PhD, from the University of Basel. Pattern separation is involved in

many memory tasks of everyday life. For example, when learning the game of chess, it is critically important to remember the different shapes of pieces like the pawn and bishop. Similarly, remembering the precise pattern of pieces on the board during a previously successful opening or endgame may decide who will win or lose. In the paper, the scientists conclude that running is perhaps the best form of exercise for boosting brain cells, adding that exercise is a simple, low-cost intervention that promotes cognition and mood, protects against damage associated with neurodegeneration, and may

alleviate drug addiction in humans. The findings serve to further underline the importance of exercise in relation to ageing. They follow findings from the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) that raising fitness levels in later life can boost brain function. The research indicated that the intensity of the exercise appeared to matter more than the duration, backing up previous conclusions. Meanwhile, scientists in Japan recently concluded that regular exercise can help the brain hold back the sands of time and perform in the same way as it did in years gone by.

FIBO 2015 breaks all-time records 138,000 visitors descend on Cologne

FIBO 2015 welcomed a total of 138,000 visitors over four event days, recording another attendance increase of 22,000 visitors (19%) over last year. Altogether 725 exhibitors from 40 nations presented the latest fitness and health industry trends and innovations on a floor space of 130,000 m². Hans-Joachim Erbel, CEO of organiser Reed Exhibitions Deutschland, says: FIBO is among the leading trade fairs with the strongest growth momentum worldwide. The scale of this development is unparalleled in the international trade fair business In the span of only five years, FIBO managed to almost triple attendance and boost the number of exhibiting companies by nearly 50%. Back in 2010, when FIBO was staged in Essen, 53,000 visitors and 560 exhibitors attended the industry trade fair. Again this year, the altogether 58,000 tickets allocated to private visitors had already sold out before the show even started. The development of the fitness and health market continues with strong momentum and the industry is still on the up and up, as this year s FIBO helped to underscore More than nine million Germans hold gym memberships today, which is more than 11% of the total population and another 6% more than a year ago. More than 50 million people train in fitness and health facilities Europewide. And, as the economic trend index tallied at FIBO by an independent market research company confirms, prospects remain bright. The results showed that nearly 60% of surveyed companies expect business to continue to grow or grow strongly; only 11% forecast a slight business cool-down. The pronounced readiness to invest seen at FIBO matched those findings. Over 40% of trade visitors came to Cologne with concrete plans to invest. A third of them placed orders of 50,000 euros or more while the trade fair was still ongoing. And 6% of them closed deals valued at over half a million euros.

Fuelband and Jawbone pulled from Apple Store Making way for the Apple Watch

Apple Store has ceased sales of Nike s Fuelband+ SE and Jawbone s UP24 fitness tracker bands. With its new Apple Watch due to launch in April the company will no longer be offering competitor fitness products through its retail stores as well as its website. Currently the MIO Alpha is the only wrist worn fitness device still available, but this will also be removed before the Apple Watch launch. Apple will however continue to sell none wrist worn devices such as Jawbone s UP Move and the Wahoo TICKR. The range of wrist-worn fitness trackers offered at Apple s retail outlets has been scaling back since November 2014 when the company stopped selling Fitbit activity tracking devices. The tactic is thought to be a re-branding effort designed to place Apple at the forefront of fitness accessories by cleaning up and minimising the range offered at its retail stores. The Apple Watch offers much of the functionality offered by most rival fitness trackers combined including the tracking of metrics like steps, calories and sleep as well as rear mounted optical sensors to monitor heart rate, and live iPhone interconnectivity. Although the Jawbone UP24 has already been superseded by the UP3 and Nike have all but retired the Fuelband, despite it finally being implemented on Apple s Health app only last month, the move will no doubt come as a blow to fitness tracker companies as Apple Store has been a key retail channel as well as a proponent of the technology.

Future of health and fitness appears cloudy

Connected health and fitness

Last week saw another International CES show showcase the latest technological developments in health and fitness. Amongst the innovations presented over the past few years one trend that continues to grow ever stronger is connected health technology. Where past generation fitness tracking merely offered a personal record of an exercise in isolation (i.e a basic pedometer), the ability to then sync with opened ended and online platforms such as mobile phone apps opened the door to the possibilities of connected health. Current generation solutions include the smartphone apps and online dashboard connected to popular trackers such as the Nike+ Fuelband SE the Jawbone UP24 and the Fitbit Flex. Where some of these tracking platforms then advanced was to link food diaries to exercise. Here users could get a breakdown of macronutrient inputs and how that compares to calorific expenditure to provide a more holistic picture of our health and fitness.

England s coasts and lakes as important as leisure centres, say 90 per cent of public Almost 90 per cent of people value outdoor spaces like the coast, lakes and waterways as much as they value leisure centres, pitches and courts for sport.

That s according to a new report from the the Sport and Recreation Alliance and the Outdoor Industries Association (OIA), which has been commissioned by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to explore what role outdoor recreation could play in its forthcoming new sport strategy. The new report was informed by a poll of the British public, which also found that eight in ten people believe that ministers should support outdoor recreation in the same way as it supports sport. By extension,

OCL unveils another new facility: £15m Oldham Leisure Centre

Oldham Community Leisure (OCL) has launched its second new leisure facility in a matter of months ‒ the £15m Oldham Leisure Centre. The new site follows swiftly on from the recent opening of Royton Leisure Centre and again saw operator OCL work in partnership Oldham Council, constructor Willmott Dixon and GT Architects to bring the project to fruition. Along with Glodwick Pool, the previous Oldham Sports Centre has now closed for the final time ‒ with the site included in plans for further town centre regeneration. As for the new site, Oldham will now have the capability to hold regional and televised competitions thanks to the enhanced facilities; which include a 25m (82ft), eight-lane swimming pool of county-level standard, an 80-station gym supplied by Technogym, two dance studios and a bespoke indoor cycling studio. There is also an eightcourt sports hall with seating for more than 500 spectators, an indoor bowls

the report calls for the creation of a named minister for the Outdoors,

Last week s government spending review saw a 29 per cent increase in funding for elite body UK Sport, while there was also £350m of funding for public forests, National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. However, there are fears that some of the cuts announced by chancellor George Osborne as part of the review could have a detrimental impact on outdoor recreation. As reflected in the latest poll, al fresco physical activity enjoys broad support from the public, with 83 per cent agree that schools should give every child the chance to take part in outdoor recreation such as sailing, climbing and orienteering.

Health experts such as Dr William Bird have long extolled the virtues of inhabiting green spaces, while a growing number of gyms and fitness companies are offering expanded outdoor exercise programmes.

Evidence shows that outdoor recreation can benefit the economy and individuals health and wellbeing, said Emma Boggis, CEO of the Sport and Recreation Alliance. We know that DCMS will consider this report as it develops the new sport strategy. The recommendations set a framework for outdoor recreation and we know the sector is willing and able to work with government on delivering change within this.

arena, café and ample free car parking. We made a commitment following the London Olympics that we would provide facilities that would improve the health and wellbeing of our residents, said Oldham Council deputy leader Jean Stretton. We also pledged that the new facilities would create local jobs and a large number of residents and local firms have been involved in their construction. The new centre also follows Royton in featuring a unique access-control system to monitor pool usage. Specially developed for OCL by Gladstone, the system collects data via a mounted touch-screen at reception turnstiles and is one of several software solutions supplied by Gladstone to the site.

Beet your personal sporting best with a BEET IT SPORT

Beetroot juice is the word on everybody s lips; top athletes swear by it and science supports it too, after a growing number of research studies show the nitrate contained in beetroot juice can increase endurance, speed reaction times and help with post exercise recovery, making it the perfect companion for training and competing. Research has found that natural dietary nitrate, found in beetroot, increases the Nitric Oxide (NO) supply in the blood system, speeding up the flow of blood and oxygen to the skeletal muscles to boost strength, muscle reaction time and endurance, during high octane activities. It has also been shown to improve sprint performance and cognitive function (decision making) during prolonged

intermittent exercise e.g rugby and football, according to scientists from Exeter University. One 70ml Beet It Sport Pro-Elite shot or Beet It SPORT Pro-Elite bar delivers 400mg of natural dietary nitrate, the equivalent of 400ml beetroot juice. It provides the maximum intake of natural nitrate in the smallest volume of liquid for a quick and easy palatable hit. Only 70ml in size, the BEET IT shot is small enough to store in a gym bag or pocket ‒ a key tool to help beet a personal best. Or for those who want to experiment with their nitrate dosage, Nitrate 3000 allows you to do so. It is a common misconception that all products with beetroot will produce the same results, but the

nitrate content in straight beetroot juice fluctuates widely, making it unreliable. However, Beet It products have a standard controlled dose of 400mg natural nitrate per shot, so you re guaranteed to feel the power of purple every time. This is why researchers, at over 200 universities worldwide, use Beet It concentrated beetroot juice in nitrate studies. BEET IT SPORT Pro-Elite shot is available from Sainsbury s, Holland & Barrett and Amazon, with an RRP of £1.49. BEET IT Organic variety (0.3g nitrate content) can be purchased from Waitrose, RRP £1.49. For more information on BEET IT brand and products, please visit www.beet-it.com

Keeping People Moving

For generations pain in the hip has been considered an inevitable part of ageing, but in the last few years there has been a dramatic rise in number of hip operations. A number of factors are fuelling this rise. An ageing population, the active lifestyle revolution, people staying active later in life and improved diagnosis. But don t be fooled into thinking hip problems are the preserve of the elderly. There has been a dramatic rise in the number of hip procedures in the young and active population. Termed hip preservation surgery it involves procedures for correcting hip dysfunction that preserves your hip joint avoiding the more commonly known total hip replacement surgery. It is common for this surgery to be keyhole with the aim of relieving pain, improving function and delaying or preventing the onset of osteoarthritis in the hip. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disorder of the joints caused by progressive loss of cartilage alongside other changes in the joint. OA of the hip occurs between and around the ball and socket of the hip joint and is the most common diagnosis for pain in the hip and unfortunately there is no cure for osteoarthritis. The hip joint is truly amazing and doing everything you can to maintain your joint for as long as possible without surgical intervention is advisable. The first line of treatment recommended to any one diagnosed with degenerative changes in the hip is exercise and manual therapy. Studies that have investigated the combination of manual therapy techniques (focusing on increasing capsular mobility of the hip) and therapeutic exercise have shown excellent results. The first and most widely used manual therapy technique to improve general hip joint capsular mobility and decrease pain is termed Long Axis Hip Traction. HipTrac is a device that replicates the manual therapy technique of long axis traction and can be used in the clinic setting or at home. The easy to use and portable design allows for regular therapy beyond the clinic in a place and a time that is convenient to you. HipTrac is also indicated for use with other hip conditions that cause pain at the hip and can be used as part of a rehabilitation process working with a manual therapist (physiotherapist, chiropractor or osteopath). Combining manual therapy with specific therapeutic exercises shows the greatest promise for conservative treatment of hip osteoarthritis. By increasing mobility and decreasing pain, you are better able to perform long-term exercise routines for decreasing weight, increasing flexibility, and increasing biomechanical strength. These conservative measures can decrease the need for medications, improve morale, improve functionality, and most of all, improve quality of life. The earlier you start conservative management of hip pain the better the long-term outcomes. So if you have any pain or niggle in the hips get it assessed by a manual therapist. Whether a potential patient of manual therapist for further information on HipTrac visit www.hiptrac.co.uk or contact HipTrac UK Limited on 0115 882 0733.

Create your own Sports Nutrition brand with...

HTC Health

A

re you a gym owner, nutrition or health professional looking for new, innovative ways to expand your business? Creating your own sports nutrition range is an easy way to increase your profit margin by building brand equity. HTC Health can help by offering a range of key sports nutrition products and working with you to find the best packaging and branding options. From tried and tested pre-workout BCAA supplements and Fat Burners that deliver powerful results, to great tasting gummies enriched with Protein, our range is sure to enhance your business.

In this section, we talk to HTC s Account Manager James Barton about his experience working with fitness and nutrition professionals to create their own line of supplements and the new products available at HTC. Since starting work at HTC, I have

made many visits to gym owners, trainers and supplement distributors, who have been looking to create their own brand for supplementation and sports nutrition foods. They often appear to me to be very disillusioned with the wide availability of very similar blends from some of the major suppliers to the sector. The prevalence of low quality commodity products with similar ingredient profiles gives them little room for mark-up and results in minimal profit margins. I strongly believe that there is a better way, and have thoroughly enjoyed consulting with ambitious and driven people, to bring them a much higher quality of supplement with better taste and boosted performance levels. I work with them to create their own unique blend and label to further promote their brand and company. The results generate a higher profit margin on every unit they sell. HTC currently have available top selling sports nutrition products in capsule form. We will add a bespoke Fat Burner, All in One, Pre

With the industry understandably obsessed with trying to find the best cheat meals and guilt free treats, the range of gummies is a real niche product to help curb those cravings, while still delivering essential nutrition. My name is Jason Turner or JTPT and I have been a qualified PT for coming on 10 years now. My specialities are body conditioning and fitness coaching, I am 40 years old and I live and breath fitness.

Jason Turner

My journey in fitness started over 12 years ago, I was over weight drinking to much and generally unhappy with myself and my life. Then one day a friend said

you need a hobby, come try the gym with me so I did, and for six months I hated it but kept on going. After a while I started to lose weight, build muscle and a nice frame, and the more results I saw the more I enjoyed it. I would see PTs in my local gym and remember saying to my friend

I could do that job, and

I could do it better I guess after a while she had enough of hearing this and said to me then prove it . This gave me the encouragement I needed to contact my local college and enrol on a CYQ level 2 gym trainer qualification, and subsequently a level 3 PT qualification and have never looked back. For me, fitness and training is not just about the gym floor, we train outside in parks, on beaches and anywhere else we need to. I personally prefer to teach and train on smaller pieces of equipment such as Kettle Bells, TRX, Rings, Circuit Training, and Gymnastic style training, we mix this in with traditional weight training components and modern styles of CV training as well as boxing and fight training. I have a very healthy and growing PT business with two part time members of staff and a fully qualified Nutritionist, on top of this I also teach two Kettle Bell classes a week and boot camps. Myself and my staff are big fans of playing to a clients strengths and working to their goals, it s got to be fun and something the client wants to do, and more importantly, works, or what s the point! In fitness one size does not fit all, it s an individual experience and that what you get when you train with JT PT and the team...so it doesn t matter what you do or what your goals are, get your trainers on, dust off the push bike, get down to your local gym, pool, park, beach, or any other place you can think of and start keeping fit, and your machine that is your body will look after you, I promise. Stay fit guys and work hard. Check out www.jasonturnerpt.co.uk

Best sources of protein

How much should you have and which foods really pack a protein punch? Find out how to get all you need and when to up your intake... Protein is an essential nutrient, responsible for multiple functions in your body, including building tissue, cells and muscle. Everyone needs protein in their diet, but if you do endurance sports or weight training you ll need to increase your protein intake, and to factor it into your training routine at specific times to reap its muscle-boosting benefits. For sporty individuals a daily dose of around 1g of protein per 1kg of body weight is recommended. After exercise, protein is particularly important since muscles need it to recover and grow. A portion of protein (15-25g) is recommended within 30 minutes of exercise, when your muscles are particularly receptive to protein synthesis. What to eat Proteins are made up of a collection of 20 amino acids. Of these, eight are classed as essential and need to be sourced from food, while the other 12 are classed as non-essential and can be produced inside your body. High-quality proteins such as eggs and meat offer more muscle-building amino acids than other protein foods, so are considered more valuable sources of protein, particularly if you do lots of exercise. Like simple and complex carbohydrates, proteins are absorbed at different rates in the body. Whey protein is digested quickly so is a good option just before and after exercise. Casein, the primary protein in milk, releases its amino acids slowly, so is particularly useful in the morning, between meals and at bedtime. Protein shakes and powders contain these proteins and are helpful before and after sports, but you can get the protein you need from natural sources too. Here are some foods to get your protein fix:

Good protein sources Eggs King of food protein is the humble egg. A medium egg has around 6g of protein of the highest biological value, meaning it comescomplete with all 20 amino acids in the most digestible form. An omelette is a good way to start the day and is a good recovery snack too. Milk Dairy foods are packed with protein and contain bone-buildingcalcium, too. Chocolate milk is the age-old recovery food after exercise, since it contains energyreplenishing carbohydrates and a blend of both slow and fast release whey and casein proteins. You can get the same recovery-boosting effects from a milk-based fruit smoothie Yogurt A combination of casein and whey protein, yogurt is a great protein-rich food. Since most of the lactose is removed, it can work for most people who are lactose intolerant. Fish and seafood Fish and seafood are good sources of protein and are typically

low in fat. While slightly higher in fat than other varieties, salmon packs in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Soya If you re dairy intolerant, eating soya protein foods such as tofu and soya-based drinks will help post-recovery, plus they can help to lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. Pistachio nuts Nuts such as pistachios are a practical protein choice if you re on the move. Around 50 pistachio nuts will provide 6g of protein, plus sodium and potassium, the electrolytes lost in sweat during exercise. Pork High quality proteins also contain branchedchain amino acids(BCAAs), which are key in supporting muscle recovery. Leucine, in particular, makes up one third of muscle protein and helps to stimulate repair after exercise. Pork is one of the richest sources of leucine and therefore a great addition to a post-exercise meal or snack. Eggs, chicken and lean beef also provide good amounts of leucine. Chicken and turkey When it comes to animal protein, opt for lean protein from white meat poultry such as chicken and turkey. It s wise to discard the skin, which is packed with saturated fat. What are your favourite sources of protein post-workout? Are you still unsure whether you're getting enough? Post your questions and comments below...

The importance of consuming water throughout the day and maintaining good hydration, especially during exercise, is well documented. With 60 million disposable plastic bottles ending up in scrap heaps each day (that equals more than 22 billion a year) it can only be a matter of time before the UK government extends its plastic bag tax to include bottles.

BottleSport offers an unprecedented selection of products which can be easily customised. We take great pride in finding affordable solutions to meet every requirement and match any colour scheme. Bespoke printing starts from as little as 50 units, so from the local junior football team to Christmas goody bags to corporate charity bike rides, we have something to cover all events.

Here at BottleSport we think we have the answer. Our reusable, UK manufactured sports bottles are a perfect way to reduce the dependence on disposable bottles, helping the environment and helping you spread brand awareness in a clever and cost effective way.

All of our sports bottles are made from the highest quality food grade polymer, are BPA free and have a pliable texture with a glossy appearance. The lid uses the latest anti spill technology and has four points at which a seal is created. Bottles and lids come in a selection of shapes, colours and sizes to suit. The smallest, a 380cc bottle is perfect for younger hands, while the 500cc is our most popular and has the most colour variations. The 750cc bottles are ideal for cyclists and our 1000cc are a perfect option for team use. We also offer a selection of innovatively shaped runners' bottles which are ergonomically designed for use while running.

Sports bottles receive excellent exposure in front of varying target markets and in many different localities. Sports bottles pop-up in all kinds of locations - from the gym, to children s school backpacks, to bike cages, to drivers on the daily commute and even on the side of sixa-side pitches. Just think, your brand could be receiving unrivalled exposure in all these places. With the bottles being reusable, the potential for exposure is unlimited, unlike with other promotional items which are used once and thrown away. Stocking over 1 million bottles,

Complementary to our wide range of sport bottles is an exclusive range of Protein Shakers which can also be personalised from as little as 50 pieces. Bottle and shaker bundles are the perfect gift for new gym memberships

or supplement stores. The translucent body of the shaker is available in 500cc and 750cc sizes with a choice of top colours. The handy measurement scale on the side of the bottle along with the additional wire mixing ball that we can supply, makes this a must for all serious gym goers. In addition to these, for those interested in unique gym products, our deluxe shaker is perfect. With its extendable screw on section with compartments for extra supplements and powders it is ideal for use throughout the day to track intake. How Fitness Business Owners Can Start the New Year Fresh

Can you believe that Halloween has already passed? Before we know it, Thanksgiving too will be over, making way for the exciting and sometimes hectic December holidays. This time of the year always tends to fly by, leaving you wondering where the prior year went when the clock strikes midnight on January 1st. While personal and family commitments tend to be at an all-time high in November and December, now is thetime to get all of your ducks in a row at your fitness business so you can start the New Year fresh. According to IHRSA, more than 12% of new gym members join in January. Whether you own a school, gym, box or studio, your busiest season is right around the corner. Here are our top three tips to ensure you ll go into your busy season, and the New Year, feeling organized, prepared and ready to kick ass. Have a Strategic Business Plan in Place Business plans are not just for new businesses. William B. Gartner, Clemson University entrepreneurship professor states, The importance of a comprehensive, thoughtful business plan cannot be over-emphasized.

Did you create a business plan before opening your gym, studio or school? If not, don t fret; you actually might be in a better place now to create an accurate plan, compared to where you were before opening your doors. According to the Harvard Business Review, Efforts to write the perfect business plan usually lead to being precisely incorrect rather than approximately correct. One problem is that the content that most people focus on in business plans has little to do with the reality that will actually emerge. Many start-up plans emphasize a gigantic potential market and how getting just the smallest sliver of it will make them and investors rich. As a current business owner, you re more experienced and have a much better idea of what is and what is not possible. Take the time in November and December to write a strategic business plan, as well as an in-depth marketing plan, to help guide your business next year. If you need help writing a business plan, get your copy of our free Fitness Business Plan Template, a step-by-step guide on how to create a strategic plan for your gym, school or studio. Set SMART Goals with Your Members It s almost time for people to start making their New Years resolutions. In 2015, two of the top 10 resolutionswere focused around health, with stay fit and healthy coming in at number one and lose weight following in second place. Unfortunately, only about 8% of those who make resolutions successfully achieve them. Losing weight and getting fit also make another top 10 list, the most commonly broken resolutions.

The biggest problem with these resolutions is they are not specific enough. If someone s goal is to simply lose weight , at what point will they consider this goal a success? After five pounds? After 25 pounds? And the goal of getting healthy will mean something completely different from person to person. As a fitness professional, you can and you should have a big influence on helping your clients develop SMART resolutions for the New Year. Over the new two months, schedule quick meetings with each and every member to help them create solid and achievable goals for the next year. Making sure that your fitness business will be an integral part of achieving their goals will help with member satisfaction, and more importantly, member retention, next year. Implement the Right Management Solution

Member

Are you still manually collecting checks each month and using tools like Excel to track attendance? Or do you currently have gym management software but feel like it just doesn t do everything you need it to? Right now is the best time to research member management solutions, so that you can select the right solution by early December and have it implemented before the New Year. January will be stressful enough with the influx of New Years Resolutioners at your fitness business. Make sure you re going into your busy season with the right solution that will significantly reduce administrative time for you and your staff, as well as enable your fitness business grow.

Planet Fitness Pays $50,000, Suspends Unlimited Tanning in Settlement with New York Attorney General

Planet Fitness, Newington, New Hampshire, has settled with New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to avoid litigation over alleged illegal tanning practices. Planet Fitness paid $50,000 in costs and penalties, and will not offer "unlimited" tanning as part of its premium Black Card membership as part of the agreement, according to a media release from the New York Office of the Attorney General (OAG) on Tuesday. "This agreement is part of a continuing effort to protect consumers from the documented skin cancer risks of indoor tanning," Schneiderman said in a statement. "I am especially concerned with rising cancer rates associated with indoor tanning, particularly for young people, and businesses that offer indoor tanning should market their services truthfully." Planet Fitness agreed not to make health-related claims to promote red lamp devices, agreed to provide adequate training to employees who oversee indoor tanning services and agreed to comply with all New York tanning regulations. While Planet Fitness Inc. neither admits nor denies the findings of the OAG, and does not advertise or

promote any health-related benefits of indoor tanning, we are pleased to have reached an amicable resolution in this matter, Planet Fitness spokeswoman McCall Gosselin said in a statement to Club Industry. We will continue to strive to ensure that our clubs operate in the best interests of our members, which are, and have always been, our number one priority. In April, Schneiderman s office served a notice of intent to sue Planet Fitness as part of the state s crackdown over alleged misleading tanning practices. The notice accused Planet Fitness of four illegal acts and practices in New York. The allegations included failing to provide disclosures and safety requirements, promoting the use of unlimited tanning services, using misbranded LED red lamp devices, misrepresenting the benefits of the unapproved Beauty Angel device, and failing to adequately train Planet Fitness employees who assist members in the use of tanning beds and red lamp devices. The investigation claimed Planet Fitness did not require or provide employee training in any Planet Fitness locations beyond the operation of UV devices and sanitizing procedures for tanning beds.

In the spring of 2013, the New York Office of the Attorney General alleged that seven of the approximately 80 independently owned and operated Planet Fitness franchise locations in New York at the time had violated certain state laws related to tanning advertising, signage, paperwork and eyewear, Gosselin said. Immediately upon being alerted to these alleged violations, Planet Fitness Inc. reemphasized to all franchisees that they are contractually required to operate their businesses in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Since that time, we have also been working closely with the OAG to ensure that the terms unlimited or free are not used in local advertising materials related to tanning services. Under the settlement, Planet Fitness will adopt written training procedures for employees of corporate locations that emphasize the operation of tanning equipment in a manner adequate to protect consumers from potential overexposure and other hazards related to indoor tanning. Planet Fitness will emphasize to franchisees the importance of compliance with employee training procedures, according to the media release.

Global Wellness awards honour industry icons Winners of the second annual Global Wellness Awards, which honour industry members and students, were announced at the Global Wellness Summit earlier this month.

• The University of Nevada Las Vegas, US, won the Student Challenge Award. • The award for Wellness Innovator went to Mel and Enid Zuckerman, founders of Canyon Ranch, which has locations in Arizona and Massachusetts, US, and is set to open its first international location in Kaplankaya, Turkey. The Zuckermans also helped found the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona and the Wellness Council of Arizona, a non-profit organisation fostering worksite wellness. • The Leader in Sustainability award went to the Green Spa Network ‒ the first time the Global Wellness Institute has given the award to an organisation rather than a spa. Members of the Green Spa Network, which is a not-for-profit trade association that explores the connections between personal wellbeing, economic sustainability and the health of the planet, gathered on stage to accept the award. • The Leading Woman in Wellness award went to Geraldine Howard, founder of spa brand Aromatherapy Associates, who accepted the award via a live video link. Howard is battling cancer, so was not able to travel to the event. She also presented delegates with a special essential oil blend. • The Leader in Workplace Wellness ‒ a new award this year ‒ went to Dr Kenneth Pelletier, Professor of Medicine and Professor of Public Health at UCSF and the University of Arizona Schools of Medicine. Dr Pelletier also spoke about workplace wellness at the conference, where he said said today s measure of return on investment will be replaced by value on investment. • And the Building a Well Word Award 2015 went to Michael R Bloomberg, American business magnate, politician, and philanthropist, who served as the 108th Mayor of New York City for three consecutive terms.

Fashion icon Kenzo designing Cambodian private island wellness retreat

Akaryn Hotel Group has plans to open a private island wellness retreat in Cambodia, with interiors by famed Japanese fashion designer Kenzo Takada, best known for his Kenzo brand of clothing, perfume and skincare. Due to open in June 2016, Arovada by Akaryn will be located on the private island of Koh Krabey ‒ a 20-minute boat transfer from Sihanoukville ‒ and will embrace Akaryn s concept of outdoor living in, with 40 private and uniquely appointed villas and a 2,000sq m (21,528sq ft) Ayurah Wellness Centre. It has long been a dream of mine to create the ultimate retreat: a place where we can rediscover who we truly are, far from the pressures and gaze of the world, said Anchalika Kijkanakorn, founder and managing director of Akaryn Hotel Group. I firmly believe Arovada Private Island by Akaryn is this destination. I am privileged to have worked closely for the last three years with the design icon Kenzo, resulting in an unparalleled private island retreat, combined with a worldleading wellness sanctuary. Arovada by Akaryn will become one of the most extraordinary island resorts in the world. The wellness centre is founded on four pillars of wellbeing: weight optimisation, anti-ageing, mind balance and detoxification. It combines Eastern and Western philosophies, creating individualised, bespoke treatment plans. Run by Ayurah Wellness, the centre fuses spiritual and medical care, integrating the cutting-edge technology of a medical clinic with time-honoured holistic therapies. Facilities include water therapy suites, full holistic fitness, medical and spa facilities, alongside mediation boardwalk trails woven into the rocks, caves and the shoreline. Treatments include blood analysis, acupuncture, IV therapy, colonics, scrubs, wraps and massages. Anti-ageing treatments, designed by UK skincare expert Linda Meredith, can be paired with nutritional supplements, stem-cell therapies and more. Daily yoga, qigong and meditation ‒ alongside music therapy ‒ provide emotional wellbeing, while private personal training, bootcamps, muay thai and pilates focus on honing the body and improving alignment. Described as a holistic, luxurious, light-footprint hideaway camouflaged within a canopy of perfectly preserved virgin jungle on an island paradise on the shores of Asia s last frontier, Arovada by Akaryn is designed by Bangkok-based architect Duangrit Bunnag, and features villas designed to blend into their natural surroundings. Built around existing trees and virgin jungle, the villas include private infinity pools, a large terrace with day bed and ocean view gardens. Each villa will also enjoy the services of a private butler, locally recruited and trained to deliver authentic Cambodian hospitality.

Fitness & Beauty Professional Industry News 005 A poll conducted in the UK, by beauty industry association BABTAC, revealed that of 1,763 women questioned, 81% admitted to eyebrow maintenance being a crucial part of their beauty regime. Only 7% of the women surveyed admitted that it wasn t a consideration. Brow maintenance has been a rapidly growing industry for a few years, and shows no signs of waning. Celebrity influence has played a huge part in the increase in attention women are paying towards their brows: women are inspired by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Rhianna and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who regularly make the press headlines for their statement brows on the red carpet.

Visit hdbrows.com

Follow: @HDBrows Like:facebook.com/OfficialHDBrows Instagram: @OfficialHDBrowsUK

Eyebrow maintenance is arguably now a stand-alone trade within the beauty industry. This growing trend is the reason why High Definition Brows ‒ formerly known as HD Brows ‒ has taken the world by storm since its launch in 2008, and why it s now recognised as the UK s number-one market leading brow treatment. A unique treatment suitable for the most well-groomed man/ woman who only aspires for perfection, or the lowest of maintenance individual who has a minimalistic beauty regime, High Definition Brows will transform the way they look and feel, regardless of their daily beauty pattern, simply by using an approach bespoke to each individual. Unlike other brow treatments, which use a one shape fits all technique, High Definition Brows Stylists assess face shape and colouring before creating a bespoke brow, tailored exclusively to a client s needs. Nilam Holmes-Patel, Co-founder and CEO of High Definition, isn t surprised to read that brow treatments are becoming a non-negotiable part of a woman s beauty regime: When I started High Definition I was hoping to educate the public and beauty therapists on how to create beautiful brows that flatter their face shape with a branded, intricate treatment. Before 2008 and the launch of High Definition (formally known as HD Brows) there was nothing else like us on the market. From the very beginning brows were a hit and the awareness grew in to a cult-like following of eyebrow enthusiasts from around the world. Gone are the days when women neglected their brows, or when a professional brow treatment was confined to a quick tint or wax. Women are now taking their brow maintenance seriously because they recognise the power brows have to transform their entire face. The demand and interest for great brows shows no sign of tiring and I am so proud to be a part of it.

HIGH DEFINITION RESPONDS TO BABTAC SURVEY THAT REVEALS BROW MAINTENANCE IS NOW A VITAL PART OF THE AVERAGE WOMAN S BEAUTY REGIME The average British woman spends £200 a year on grooming her eyebrows, according to a recent survey.

Neuroscientist and skin expert Claudia Aguirre reveals brain:skin connection at GWS

Neuroscientist and skin expert Dr. Claudia Aguirre talked about the skin:brain connection during a keynote session at GWS, highlighting that we are only beginning to understand the science of how the state of the skin affects and reflects our health.

Using imagery by photographer Claire Felicie to illustrate her point, Aguirre showed how traditional medicine ‒ topical creams ‒ didn t treat the skin conditions caused by different types of psychological trauma. For example, a high school ballerina with a wart on the sole of her foot who was struggling to identify whether she wanted to continue dancing after graduation needed a combination of hypnosis and skincare ‒ something Aguirre calls derma-psychology. A boy who developed chronic eczema after a car crash, in which his mother died, was struggling with loss. An army pilot whose forehead developed blisters every time he flew over a particular canyon was suffering from guilt, because his friend flew the plane one day when the pilot was sick ‒ the replacement pilot crashed in the canyon and died. To treat the skin, we have to treat the mind first, said Aguirre, who is working in cooperation with Comfort Zone. The skin is being seen now as a self-organising entity and a social organ, according to Aguirre. Aguirre quoted a study that shows that there is a neural basis of sensitive skin. Lactic acid was dabbed into the nasal labial fold of a set of people who say they have sensitive skin and those who say they don t. An MRI scan of both sets of people showed a clear neurobiological difference between someone who says they have sensitive skin and someone who says they don t in terms of their brain response. Now we can treat skin with a more holistic point of view, due to discoverable connections found by scientists in the last 10 years or so, said Aguirre. For example, the skin ‒ as an organ ‒ has a stress axis all of its own, independent of the central nervous system. It produces hormones all of its own. It has its own machinery. This shifts the paradigm of how we think about the skin. According to Aguirre, the skin can also tell time. Every cell has a clock. At night, it knows that it is night time so it does something different, which therefore means a person s skincare regimen could be different. Aguirre believes the skin is a social organ. The first sense humans develop is touch, she said. If a baby doesn t receive touch from its mother, this changes the way a child grows up: they may not be resilient to disease or stress.

Health Performance Indicators (HPIs) should replace KPIs, says Harvard professor

Dr Josef Allen, assistant professor of Harvard s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, discussed Harvard s Healthy Buildings Programme during the recent Global Wellness Summit in Mexico City, focusing on a new vocabulary to describe indicators of healthy environments.

Allen highlighted the link between material selection for buildings and the impact on human health. Humans spend 90 per cent of their time indoors, said Allen, and these interior environments are the areas most people are ignoring when it comes to improving workplace wellness for employees. We all know that going outside is healthier than being indoors, but many of us don t know that even our carpets and chairs exude chemicals that affect our health, such as obesogens, said Allen. The average room gets one air change per hour, according to Allen, but in the 1980s this was reduced when air conditioning energy costs were reduced making the system more readily available ‒ dropping down to 0.2 air changes per hour. In 1985, this stale air led to the Sick Building Syndrome, the name given to the concentration of indoor pollutants. It is no longer acceptable to be in a building that makes us not sick, said Allen. We need buildings that make us healthy. Allen conducted a review earlier this year on the effect green buildings and their indoor environment quality have on human health ‒ specifically cognitive function. To eradicate subjective results, he measured the cognitive function of 24 workers in optimised green buildings versus standard spaces. The working participants were taken into simulated environment and, from below, Allen controlled a number of variables, modifying one at a time each day. At the end of the day he administered a cognitive function test to the test subjects. The three variables tested included the amount of outdoor air ventilation pumped indoors, the level of carbon dioxide, and the number of volatile toxic compounds in the atmosphere, which includes common chemicals found in personal care products, carpets and furniture. The results showed a doubling of cognitive function scores for people experiencing increased outdoor ventilation. For decades we thought carbon dioxide percentages of these normal levels (1,400 parts per million) didn t have a huge negative impact, but they do, said Allen. Normal business key performance indicators (KPIs) of every company need to become health performance indicators (HPIs), as these are the metrics that matter the most.

Design Essentials for Creating a Successful Spa Business in Your Health Club

When people visit one of your spas, their worries should be forgotten and relaxation should set in. Places like the Qua Spa at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and Spa Vital in Cherry Creek, CO, have captured this concept and delivered it to spa enthusiasts. These spas create a lasting memory through design and superior service, just as your spa should do. The following are some design essentials for creating a successful spa business in your health club:

Prepare Your Spa or Salo Dare I sing It s beginning to look a lot like Christmas !? I LOVE Christmas, getting all dolled up for the parties and family gatherings! I rely on my favourite salon and spa to keep me looking my best throughout this busy season, and I do a fair bit of Christmas shopping there too (who doesn t love the gift of me-time or finding a little stocking filler from their favourite beauty brand), so having your salon prepped for this busy time of year is important to keep things running smoothly for clients and maximising profits. Take a peek at my three top tips to prepare your spa or salon for the Christmas rush: 1. Make Sure You Have Gift Options This could include retail options, as many beauty brands bring out special money-saving Christmas gift sets which are often in adorable festive packaging! Great for clients wanting to give somebody a taster of a new brand, a secret Santa presents for the beauty fans out there, or a stocking filler of extras for an already loyal fan. It s good to keep your retail offering seasonal, and Christmas gift sets are a great way to do this (especially if you make your display areas look extra festive to grab attention!) Gift vouchers for treatments are a must-have at Christmas time, even if you don t normally offer them year round. They will bring new customers coming through the doors during the Jan/Feb lull, and even if some don t get redeemed, you have been paid upfront so you re not missing out! 2. Agree Time off Well in Advance Of course everyone has a busy social calendar around Christmas, and naturally this will mean you have a harder time working days off and extra holidays into an already stretched schedule. So set deadlines, and let everyone know they need to request important days in advance. Ideally have your November and December schedule agreed by mid October. No-one will have all of the days they want, but do your best to accommodate things which can t move (school nativity plays, booked holidays away) then if any further switching needs to be made it s easier to do before everyone has finalised their plans. This way you won t be short staffed, and nobody will be in a bad mood because they re missing out on an important event. We all know happy staff means happy customers! 3. Get Into the Festive Spirit I know you re going to be run off your feet over the next couple of months, and you might feel more like Scrooge, but showing your clients some festive spirit will go a long way! Try putting some cheesy Christmas tunes on, decorating the place, and even offering some mulled wine and mince pies out on busier days. It will help clients get into the mood for their own celebrations, and they will remember the cosy Christmassy atmosphere (nobody expects a minimalist white space at Christmas!) and not feeling like they were being rushed out, and will want to return. Until next time! X

on for the Christmas Rush

KEBELO WINS PRESTIGIOUS SILVER 2015 PURE BEAUTY FOR KEBELO BONDAGE

Fitness & Beauty Professional 025

Specialist hair smoothing brand, Kebelo, has been celebrating after being awarded a prestigious 2015 Pure Beauty Award. The brand took home the Silver award in the Best New Hair Colouring Product category for its recently launched Kebelo BONDAGE ‒ a unique, professional hair strengthening treatment that strengthens hair bonds with every colour treatment. A professional treatment, Kebelo BONDAGE is a revolutionary dual-step system, whereby a strengthening shot, formulated with Carbocysteine technology, murumuru seed butter and carob, is added to hair colour, as part of the colouring process. This shot works to strengthen hair bonds, improving the texture, elasticity and condition of hair, as it is colour-treated. The treatment includes an at-home aftercare product, BONDAGE Colour Masque, which can be used to extend the results of the BONDAGE treatment, or can be used as a stand-alone product, as part of a haircare regime for coloured hair. The winners of the Pure Beauty Awards 2015 were announced at an exclusive ceremony held in The Ballroom at London s iconic Savoy Hotel. A prominent night in the beauty industry calendar, the glamorous awards ceremony was hosted by TV presenter, Gethin Jones, and attended by celebrities, key beauty industry professionals and major UK beauty retailers. Founders Louise and Kate with Lucy Watson (Made in Chelsea)

"It s the fact that we can offer the clients a 2-in-1 treatment that saw my bookings increase when I started offering Skinny Tan" commented Liverpool salon owner Joanne Dwyer (Intuition Spa) "But it is the colour, and the fact it isn t drying their skin, that keeps them coming back". Skinny Tan is backed by Celebrity Interior Designer Kelly Hoppen which creates marketing hype and column inches. 028 Winter Tan Fitness & Beauty Professional

Get tip top tanned for the festive party season It may be chilly outside but, as Christmas is the biggest party season of the year, don't neglect to keep skin looking healthy, glowing and tanned.

The office party, family shindig or turkey curry buffet at a friend's are all great reasons to get legs, arms and décolletage back on show over the cooler festive months, and having a naturally radiant tan will enhance any party attire. Noelle O'Connor, beauty expert and founder of TanOrganic, the world's first and only Eco-Certified self-tanning brand, gives her top tips on ensuring the skin on show is healthy, glowing and twinklingly gorgeous: Exfoliation is key: As we tend to cover our bodies more in the colder months, it's likely that we will exfoliate less regularly than in the summer. However, central heating and layers of clothes can attribute to dull skin. Although it can be unpleasant stripping off for a dry brush, try to give your whole body a once over with TanOrganic Tan Erase (£14.99) at least twice a week. Gently scrubbing your skin in a circular motion with this glove will help to slough off dead cells and help skin looking healthy. Eat fresh: It's all too easy to be overindulgent when it comes to Christmas food, but eating lots of empty' carbs, such as white pasta and fast food, can make your skin look puffy and lacklustre. By all means enjoy the festive food, but try to eat some fresh fruit and vegetables as well. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Central heating can lead to dry and flaky skin. By regularly hydrating it with TanOrganic Oil Arganic (£24.99) twice a day if possible, and especially after dry exfoliation, you will give your skin the moisture it needs to be radiant. Remember to drink plenty of water too (and avoid too many Christmas cocktails if you can!). Oil Arganic is the ultimate in hydration, containing Argan oil, coconut oil and macadamia nut oil. Don't forget hair and nails: Your hair and nails will also need extra attention over winter, and Oil Arganic is the perfect solution.

Once you've massaged the oil into your body, rub any excess through your hair and into your nails and cuticles to help them shine. Get the perfect make-up base: For a radiant complexion, add a drop of Oil Arganic to your foundation, mix well and apply as normal. This will help the foundation to blend into your skin, leaving you with a hydrated and beautiful base to apply your party look to. Get a glowing boost: If you feel pasty and pale but don't want a day glo' orange tan in the dull winter light, try a minimal application of TanOrganic Self-Tanning Oil (£24.99), which gives skin a natural radiance and glow to set off any party frock perfectly. Use this super-easy oil like any other body oil or moisturiser (no gloves needed just wash hands afterwards). And lastly, it sounds boring, and when you come home late from a party, the only thing on your mind is bed, but always remove make-up before you sleep and have a glass of water - trust me, it makes the world of difference! www.tanorganic.com
