Embedded Vision Solutions Do Not Need to Come from Asia Embedded vision is an important driver of digitization and automation. Many manufacturers and companies can make their products "smart" with Embedded Vision through visual sensors, or for automating their production processes. Seeing robots, drones, and autonomous assistants, help industry to become more competitive. Smart devices, or AR/VR applications open new, high-potential consumer and industrial markets.


he development of products and solutions with Embedded Vision must be fast and efficient; and, be cost effective for companies to fully exploit these competitive advantages. Therefore, many companies and OEMs work with components and suppliers from the Far East. However, this approach also poses challenges. Often, customers complain about inadequate communication; the prolonged coordination of details; delays in delivery; and, poor quality. In particular, various expectations of the product, quality, and ease of integration appear to exist. In practice, Embedded Vision requires sufficiently flexible and versatile evaluation platforms. Customers need integrated sensor and optical solutions, testing platforms, suitable IP, and technical support. In addition, they require advice about configuring their machines to "see". Other reported examples are poorly developed drivers, or insufficient documentation. These problems hamper fast and efficient vision development, and generate additional costs. This situation is particularly difficult for customers with strengths on the system side, or working with Embedded Vision for the first time. Other companies do not have the time or resources to delve deeper into vision development. Subjectively, personal service and technical support often do not seem to exist from China or Taiwan, or that customer service is restricted only to high-volume customers. Therefore, medium-sized companies miss an opportunity to forge a direct relationship with the supplier, and consequently complain about catalogue sales without technical support.


The question is; how can embedded vision products be developed quickly, with high-quality and be cost-effective with local partners? September 2019 ENGINEERING UPDATE FlexFlow sensors function reliably even at process temperatures up to +150°C and also have the ability to handle transient temperature peaks so their performance is unaffected. Since they have no moving mechanical parts, they are virtually maintenance-free and ensure smooth operation of systems, reliably monitoring flow and speed in high temperature applications. In sintering furnaces, powdery substances are mixed together and then combined with each other, either by compression or heating. Once the powder masses are formed in this way, the cohesion of the particles is possible and after the preformed mixture has been prepressed in this way, it’s then compressed and hardened by applying heat treatment below melting point. It’s only through this temperature treatment that the product of the sintering process achieves the essential properties required for the eventual application, such as hardness, strength or temperature conductivity. Typical high temperature applications include the production of high-strength ceramics and metal materials with complex geometrical shapes, such as cutting inserts for tool manufacture (Pic 1), components for motors and transformers and also grinders for coffee machines. Things can certainly heat up in these applications. For example, in silicate ceramics manufacture, temperatures during sintering can range from 800°C to 1400°C, and in technical ceramics up to 2500°C. Furthermore, in sintering furnaces and other high temperature applications, procedures can be complex and the demands on systems can be challenging with processes tending to be energy-intensive and therefore expensive. Sintering must take place smoothly over hours or even days under defined conditions, otherwise the consequences would be waste (along with the associated costs) as sintering ovens are generally operating at optimum levels. The cooling of the connections of the heating elements is a critical point for reliable functioning so it’s important that breakdowns don’t occur. Water cooling is usually the preferred method and cooling circuits must be constantly monitored during operation. For example, on the basis of the flow rate and temperature of the coolant, sensors in the return flow recognize whether the pumps are working reliably and whether sufficient coolant is flushing the heating element connections. However, the choice of suitable sensors for this application depends on a number of factors. Coolant temperatures frequently exceeding 100°C are a problem for many sensors and If 20 or 30 or more sensors have to be replaced in large sintering furnaces at regular intervals, the additional costs can be considerable. In addition to sensors being able to withstand high process temperatures there


FLEXFLOW SENSORS FOR WHEN THE PROCESS GETS REALLY HOT When things start getting hot, conventional flow sensors often reach their limits, for example in heat treatment applications such as high strength ceramics manufacture and cooling circuits in sintering furnaces. When temperatures rise above 100°C, most sensors are unable to cope, can fail after a short period of time and frequently have to be replaced. In the meantime there is a solution with the availability of flow and temperature sensors specifically designed for hightemperature applications. The calorimetric measuring principle Thermal flow sensors work according to the calorimetric measuring principle which is based on the physical laws of thermal conduction and thermal transfer in liquids and gases. A body with a higher temperature releases energy into its environment in the form of heat. The amount of this energy release depends on the temperature difference and the mass flow. A heated sensor is cooled by the liquid flowing around it and the degree of cooling is directly dependent on the mass flowing past it. In addition to the flow rate, the media temperature can also be recorded and monitored with one sensor. This reduces the number of measuring points and minimizes the effort required for installation, service and storage.

Easy installation - Optimum Flexibility Thanks to their symmetrical, centered design, the sensors can be easily installed in the process regardless of the installation position and orientation, helping to ensure precise measurements and process safety (Pic 3). They are available with different

process connections and rod lengths from 16mm to 200mm so are suitable for a variety of applications. In sintering furnaces, the version with the tapered seal connection is usually the preferred option (Pic 4). The metallic seal combined with an additional plastic O-ring seal is pressure resistant up to 100 bar, is easy to install in the pipe and, should the situation arise. It’s also quick and easy to replace which helps to minimize downtime and maximize uptime of the system. Thermal flow sensors by Baumer are suitable for flow rates of 10 to 400 cm/s and temperatures of between -25 and +150 °C so are ideal for cooling systems that operate at high temperatures. They are available either as analog versions (4-20 mA) or with user-adjustable outputs using IO-Link. The versions with analog outputs have proved successful in cooling systems of sintering furnaces and are tamper-proof. For applications with frequently changing batches or different process steps, the IO interface is the best option as it allows for simultaneous parameterization of several sensors. This simplifies switching point adjustment and saves time. All data can be recorded and managed centrally in the control system, which helps with the overall configuration of the system. Affordable fibre laser cutting in sheet and tube

Do you think that in-house laser cutting is not for you? Or that only high volume users and laser cutting subcontractors can afford to invest in the equipment and justify the running costs? Many companies are still unaware that the cost of laser cutting has reduced drastically in recent years both in capital and running costs. Affordable models such as the SmartFibre range from RVD Machinery are powered by high quality fibre lasers from nLight in the USA and fitted with market leading components including the Raytools cutting head from Switzerland. Versions are available in compact designs as well as full production models with shuttle tables. Initial investment starts as low as £80,000.00 for a compact model, with the SmartFibre PR production range starting from around £125,000.00. Maintenance and running costs are often assumed to be extortionate, however a lot of the data discussed is based on older CO2 models which require large amounts of power and a quite intensive maintenance regime. A modern fibre laser requires as little as 10% of the electricity usage while at the same time needing little maintenance and significantly increasing productivity, which results in much lower operating costs. These changes have affected both sheet cutting and tube cutting lasers in recent times. Due to traditionally very high initial costs the justification for


tube lasers has typically been difficult although the benefits are well known. The RVD SmartFibre TF Tube Laser has changed this with models starting from around £200,000.00. A tube laser is able to cut holes, shapes and full cut outs in many different products including round, square, rectangular, D-shaped, oval, angle, channel, flat bar and I beam profiles. A product that would conventionally require sawing and then drilling, milling or grinding to finish, can be cut in one quick sequence.

With the Annual Investment Allowance increased to its highest level since its introduction in 2008, some would argue that there has never been a better time to invest in equipment of this type. s consumers have become more health conscious, the demand for food and drink products without preservatives has increased. However, traditional methods combining sterilisation with hot filling have not been suitable for products which are increasingly sold on their ‘fresh’ and ‘natural’ characteristics, due to the effect on product quality. In most cases, hot filling sterilises the container as the product (which is still hot from cooking or sterilising) is filled. However, the temperatures required often have unwanted effects on the quality of the product, and the heat imposes restrictions on the type of container which can be used. Consequently, cold aseptic filling has become a common technique; its flexibility means that it is suitable for a wide range of products from fresh fruit dices and purees to marinades and dairy products, and this diversity has also seen the development of a wide range of fillers and packaging types.


Aseptic filling systems generally combine a number of elements into a single integrated production line. This integrated approach helps to ensure microbiological safety throughout the process from initial treatment through to the sealing of the finished product. The steps included in an integrated aseptic filling line (such as the HRS Asepticblock) typically include: thermal treatment; cooling (where necessary); sterilisation of the packaging (although pre-sterilised packaging may be used); and finally filling and sealing under aseptic conditions.

The business case for aseptic filling There is of course a financial investment required to install aseptic filling technology, but when conducting a cost/benefit analysis, some of the factors to consider include: • Volume: Aseptic filling lines normally operate on a continuous basis and therefore are much faster than batch cooling operations.

• Quality: Probably the biggest driver towards aseptic filling is the improvement in product quality. Heat treatments can be driven by product requirements, rather than the need to sterilise the container, preserving taste, nutrient content and colour. • Flexibility: Most aseptic filling lines can be configured to supply a range of products and fill a range of containers. • Packaging: Although there may be an increase in costs associated with the need to purchase sterile packaging, many packaging types used in aseptic filling are lighter and cheaper than their hot-fill equivalents. When considering aseptic filling, companies need to weigh up the safety of the proposed solution with capital and operating costs, operational safety considerations and the effect on product quality. In most situations, the business case to adopt cold filling quickly becomes apparent.

Accurate Flow Measurement of Corrosive Fluids Titan Enterprises reports how its Metraflow ultrasonic flowmeter has been selected by a leading fluid metering and water treatment company to accurately measure chemical disinfection dosing using sodium hypochlorite. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is a highly corrosive liquid commonly used as an oxidizing and bleaching agent and as a disinfectant. These properties challenge component parts used in most flowmeters. ADEL system offers a complete range of products for power supply and back-up in the industrial automation field. Besides a complete range of industrial power supplies with output voltage 48, 24, 12, and 5 Vdc with current from 1A till 40A, ADEL system offers additional and innovative technical solutions which differentiate the company from what other competitors can provide, such as: DC UPS - CBI Series The CBI DC UPS combine the functions of a Power Supply, a Back Up Module and of a Battery Charger in one unit. They use switching technology with microcontrollers and optimise the supply to the DC load either when the AC mains is present or when on battery backup. The CBI units do not allow for deep discharge of the batteries. The CBI units switch from the mains to the battery in the event of a mains failure without any interruption. There is automatic protection without fuse against the reserve polarity, short circuit and overload and overvoltage. They carry out diagnostic checks on the connected battery through the Life Test, every 90 minutes, enabling the users to select the most appropriate charging curve to maximise the efficiency of the system and to support a life battery. They are equipped with two relays; one to operate to indicate the status of the mains or battery backup and another to indicate any of the 8 battery protection functions that the unit monitors. The primary function of the CBI unit is to optimise the battery condition so when it is required the battery is as good as its life cycle will allow for. All units are DIN Rail mounted and there is a range of battery carriers available to safely and easily fit the battery packs into the enclosure or panel. Battery Chargers - CB Range The Adel System CB battery chargers are a range of microprocessors controlled chargers. Based on switchmode technology, they produce an output voltage stabilised at a pre-set value, even when not charging the battery. These battery chargers have three charging levels- recovery, boost and trickle charge. All the chargers have a relay output for a range of battery bank protection functions: Replace battery or Flat battery; Fault in the main; High voltage at the battery ends; Open or sulphated battery; Reverse Polarity, Short-Circuited element and Wrong Battery Voltage. The intelligent battery charger control and maintain batteries charge state ensuring optimum recharging over time. Once the batteries have been charged the CB battery charger checks the battery every 90 minutes. The status of the battery is monitored so it only receives the current required, this prevents damage to the battery and prevents the battery being permanently under charge. n the arduous operating conditions found with power transmission test benches, it is essential that the drive couplings used are able to withstand the wide range of operating conditions often associated with this environment and allow meaningful test data to be collated. With a variety of component types, including: engines, gearboxes, transmission elements and consumable or wear parts to be tested, each of which can have its own specific test criteria, it is essential that the drive coupling can be closely matched to the application. Reich’s stand exhibits at Advanced Engineering will feature a range of coupling types targeted at automotive test bench applications. These include the modular and design-oriented TOK system, the latest high-speed FLEXDUR FD-HS all-metal coupling, and the latest version of the proven MULTI MONT SELLA claw coupling as a high-speed high speed variant. A multitude of rubber compounds, developed in-house by Reich, ensures that the rigidity of the coupling elements is perfectly matched to each application. These backlash and maintenance free components are connectable to flywheels conforming to SAE J620 or to any other standard. TOK couplings operate at temperatures from -40°C to +100°C, cover a torque range from 75 to 70,000 Nm, with rotational speeds up to 13,000 rpm. Reich’s latest FLEXDUR FD-HS all-metal couplings are designed and manufactured specifically for applications with higher speeds. The transmission elements are flexible disk packs made of stainless spring steel, and due to their special shape, stresses are evenly distributed withiin the disk pack when fitted. Specially designed for test bench use, the disc pack has a high torque capacity suitable for high speeds applications with nominal torques range from 320 Nm to 12500 Nm.


The new high-speed MMS coupling features a separate bolton retaining cap that encloses the circumference of the rubber elements. The elements can be easily replaced radially by loosening and sliding back the retaining cap. There no need to de-couple the machine components during this process, keeping downtime to a minimum and the maintenance procedure simple. This torsionally flexible high-speed claw coupling has a torque range of 630 Nm - 3000 Nm and is capable of operating at temperatures between -40°C - 100°C. The versatile MULTI MONT coupling range comprises a large variety of different types so a suitable coupling is available for almost any type of power transmission requirement. Following the global partnership between AutoCoding Systems and SICK, the recently launched automatic print inspection solution, 4Sight, will be demonstrated on the SICK stand at the forthcoming PPMA Total Show. We're also delighted that the 4Sight solution has already been shortlisted in the PPMA Awards for the most Innovative Vision Solution. Visitors to the show, which is taking place at the NEC between 1st and 3rd October, will be able to see how the 4Sight application communicates directly with any brand of printer, with no requirement to “teach” the camera what to look for. Unlike more traditional vision inspection techniques, no fixturing, such as an edge or logo, is needed; the software can automatically cope with variations in artwork, background and text location. The versatility of the solution means it can be set for varying levels of inspection, from print presence through to full OCR. The application offers full flexibility allowing users to determine acceptable print quality tolerances and define what is considered a good read, bad read or no read on a per product basis. As all processing is undertaken onboard the SICK camera where the 4Sight software resides, no line-side PC is needed. There is a simple setup process for camera position, set-up, focus, illumination and exposure time, with no requirement for operators to configure features or regions


of interest. The software automatically adjusts to accommodate real-time message changes, such as date code and clock time. In addition, there are a number of configurable features to allow the solution to be easily optimised for fast processing time, making it an ideal print inspection solution for high speed applications, such as bottling and canning lines. PPMA visitors will also be able to see demonstrations of AutoCoding's world class code deployment and packaging verification solution which is already being used on over 1000 packaging lines throughout the UK, US and Australia to reduce the risk of coding and packaging errors.

Diversify your sector offering During times of uncertainty, it can be wise to step back and consider sectors where your products and specialisms could offer transferrable benefits. As global engineering company Renishaw has found, this strategy can yield surprisingly good results. “Our success lies in the fact that we have diversified in so many sectors,” explains Jonathan Archer, General Manager for UK sales at Renishaw. “In the medical sector, we’ve used our additive manufacturing expertise to produce some truly ground-breaking implants that would otherwise be impossible. “We learnt that the challenges engineers face in the highprecision industrial sector are not too dissimilar to those faced by professionals in the medical sector. Safety first – 5 food factory hazards that can be reduced with PC pumps Food and drink manufacturing is responsible for over a quarter of all manufacturing injuries – more than 5,000 incidents are reported each year. As an alternative to traditional manual labour, progressive cavity (PC) pumps can automate some of the key processes on food manufacturing sites. Lesley Eaton, Marketing Executive for PC pump specialist SEEPEX UK, explains how this is helping to de-risk five major food factory hazards... 1) Slips and trips Transferring liquids and pastes manually brings the risk of spillages. Pumping these products instead eliminates this risk and significantly cuts the likelihood of a slip occurring, as well as decreasing the number of people on the factory floor. Pumps are renowned for their ability to transfer liquids. Yet thanks to their gentle, low shear handling action, PC pumps are also able to efficiently transfer viscous products or those containing soft solids, without damaging them; further decreasing the chance of the factory floor becoming a slip hazard. 2) Conveyors By switching to a PC pump, food producers can transfer not just liquids and semi-solids, but also solid foodstuffs. By automating their handling and eliminating the need for conveyors, the risk of operator injury is significantly reduced. In addition, pumps and associated pipework are much easier to clean and maintain than conveyors and require less exposure to harsh cleaning chemicals. 3) Manual handling In the food and drink industry, around 1,700 acute injuries per year are attributed to manual handling. By automating food transfer duties, this figure can be significantly cut. For example, SEEPEX has delivered automated, fully enclosed, piped waste removal systems to a number of food manufacturing sites, including Natures Way Foods. Featuring an integrated chopping and pumping system which can handle large solid


food items, these solutions can help to reduce manual handling-related injuries. 4) Workplace transport Enclosed, piped waste removal systems eliminate the need for fork lift trucks entering food production sites. Instead, waste can be piped directly out of the factory straight into a collection vehicle, away from high traffic areas. 5) Corrosive and abrasive materials Some ingredients contain allergic or irritant properties, making them harmful to the skin in their concentrated state. Automating the dosing process by using a PC dosing pump reduces the risk of exposure to the skin. Cleaning chemicals can also irritate skin and even cause respiratory problems. Many PC pumps now come with CIP as standard, meeting the exacting requirements of the food industry without compromising employee safety.

Digital subtractive systems increase capability by offering complementary functionality with similar flexibility and speed.

Flexibility, Precision and Speed – Essential Attributes

David Richter of Universal Laser Systems explains why digital laser technology, specifically the company’s new ULTRA 9 system for laser cutting, drilling and marking, delivers the perfect balance when combining additive and subtractive methods.

The ULTRA 9 motion system also incorporates advanced path planning and addressable beam positioning as low as 2 um, which help maintain part dimensional integrity. The unmatched ability of the ULTRA 9 to control and fine-tune these critical laser parameters sets a new standard in processing quality.

“Our ULTRA 9 technology brings another dimension to rapid product development and prototyping by offering virtually unlimited potential to process a vast range of materials with extreme precision. Our advanced system produces components in less time, often just seconds or minutes, eliminating the need for lengthy setup or hard tooling. This allows for rapid evaluation of different materials to improve product performance and durability or provide unique functionality.” At the core of ULTRA 9 is the flexibility to process virtually any material by allowing users to select the ideal combination of wavelength and power for their application. The system supports up to 3 laser sources and wavelengths: CO2 in 10.6um & 9.3um and Fiber in 1.06um, with power options ranging from 10 to 150 watts. Using patented MultiWave HybridTM technology, the ULTRA 9 is even able to optimise energy absorption by focusing any combination of 3 wavelengths, either consecutively or simultaneously, onto one focal point on the target material. This enables the system to process the broadest range of materials, including multi-layer laminates and complex composites.

Not only does the ULTRA 9 produce high quality repeatable results, it is also very efficient. Throughput is optimised with a maximum beam positioning speed of 3810 mm / sec (150 in/ sec) for vector processing and a maximum raster material processing speed of more than 7620 mm/ sec (300 in/sec). Through advanced path planning and other features like material-independent autofocus, high quality results are consistently achieved in the shortest possible processing time. Richter sums up: “It’s clear that having subtractive laser technology such as our ULTRA 9 system available alongside 3D additive systems boosts productivity and opens up new manufacturing possibilities. The ability to quickly produce high quality components in the final material maximises manufacturing capability. Getting the combination right:

Solenoid Interlock AZM400 plus Safety Fieldbox Higher machine availability and greater savings potential: Schmersal to present integrated safety solution at Motek Visit Schmersal at Motek 2019 in Stuttgart between 7 and 10 October – Stand 7103, Hall 7 Motek 2019 in Stuttgart will see the Schmersal Group presenting an integrated solution which offers users optimum safety, greater machine availability and significant savings potential. The solenoid interlock AZM400 has only been on the market a few years and since then has managed to demonstrate its varied range of potential uses. It impresses with its very high locking force of 10,000 newtons. Thanks to its dual-channel release signal, this solenoid interlock achieves PL e and SIL 3 safety performance levels for both its locking and interlock functions. Users can now connect several AZM400s to a PROFINET/PROFIsafe node in a safety circuit when combined with Schmersal’s new Safety Fieldbox. This solution is considerably more cost-effective than equipping each individual interlock with a PROFINET interface.

The lockout tag is suitable for fitting inside and outside the hazard zone. Up to six padlocks can be attached to the lockout tag, meaning up to six people can enter the hazard zone at the same time. Should an operator be accidentally trapped inside such a system, a Bowden cable can be used as an escape release mechanism. The Bowden cable acts as an emergency release when used outside the hazard zone. In the standard version, the pullcord measures a total of six metres in length with sheathing four metres in length, which means it can also be used as a safety device on large systems.

Thanks to its universal device interface with an 8-pole M12 connector, the Safety Fieldbox can be used to connect an extensive variety of safety switchgears: safety interlocks, switches, sensors, light curtains and operation panels. When the Safety Fieldbox is used, safety interlocks of different types (electronic and electro-mechanical) require just one device connection. This solution brings a great advantage for users – highly simplified and, consequently, more cost-efficient wiring of safety switchgears. Moreover, there is no need for complex additional installations for controlling the interlock or reading diagnostic information. An additional digital input on the Safety Fieldbox helps to ensure higher machine availability: the diagnostic signals from all connected safety switchgears – such as the AZM400 – are transmitted to the controller via this digital input. This provides users with status information for interlocks and error messages for evaluation, users receive a message telling them to readjust the door when it is misaligned, for example. Preventive maintenance measures can thus eliminate machine downtimes. New accessory for the AZM400 Schmersal now offers the AZM400 with a new accessory: a lockout tag protects operating staff from being locked inside larger, walk-in systems and machines by mistake while they are performing servicing and repair work. To ensure protection, service personnel attach a padlock to the lockout tag when entering the hazard zone. This means the safety system door can no longer be closed and the machine is prevented from starting up unintentionally.

Requirements for the quantity, availability and quality of the energy vary according to the consumer and are therefore contractually agreed between the consumer and the supplier. In this way, trouble-free operation of customer installations can be ensured without unduly influencing other energy consumers on the same network. However, where mains power quality is concerned, the problems caused by influences are increasing rapidly. This is not least the result of consumer behaviour in terms of AC-DC voltage conversion, which makes energy planning an increasingly difficult task (for example when considering e-mobility). But also, countless and everincreasing numbers of decentralised feedin points, such as PV systems for example, multiply the supplier’s problems and as a result make it more difficult for them to comply with their contracts. Detecting grid problems and remedying them Two types of measurement may be useful in assessing power quality. On the one hand, a permanent measurement procedure is used to support 24/7 operation. This measurement should monitor the system as uninterruptedly and permanently as possible and continuously transmit relevant information to the operator (for example, with the LINAX PQ3000 or PQ5000). On the other hand, the so-called mobile measurement method is used to obtain an up-to-date picture of the power network on-site, in the event of a fault or during periodic checks by means of measurement campaigns. In addition, individual limit value standards can be entered and selected. The time frame for statistical observation can be flexibly set by the user, but should not be less than 7 days for it to be in compliance with the standard. The unique PQ-EASY REPORT allows customers to select the scope of the report from one of three levels: a conformity overview, an overview with statistical details or an overview with statistical details plus an event overview. Customers can also include their own company logo in the reports generated by PQ-EASY REPORT. Periodic Table 2019 is the international year of the periodic table, marking the 150th year of the table of elements. To mark this milestone, mk Profile Systems have been working closely with Warwick University to create a giant periodic table sized at 3.6m x 2.7m x 2m with its structure based on both the 25 and 40 series of the mk aluminium profile system. The benefit of using mk’s comprehensive profile system is that it requires no welding, abrasive grinding or painting unlike a steel structure. However the profiles are sturdy and combine high load capacity whilst retaining an attractive design. The 25 series profile is ideal for light duty frames and show cases but by incorporating the 40 series, which is ideal for exhibit pieces, this provides additional strength to the display piece. Initially on display at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition in London at the start of July, the table will then be used at other shows/events later in the year. The idea for the structure came from Warwick University, a long standing customer of mk Profiles, and then mk assisted with the design to ensure that the vision became a reality. Once all of the profiles and associated components had been delivered to Warwick University the students set to work


assembling the structure and then adding the elements. This included 1064 LEDs with 9 LEDs for each element; the elements each have their own micro controller with individual addresses, then each of the six main blocks has a 12C routing board to address the (up to) 24 elements. The routing boards connect to a central hub which in turn links to the control panel that has its own controllers, 126 in total.

HARTING commissions new European Distribution Centre A day of celebrations marked the HARTING Technology Group's official opening of its state-of-the-art European Distribution Centre (EDC) in Espelkamp. Up to 20,000 order items will be processed every day, with goods dispatched to customers on the day of order. Costing an estimated â‚Ź45 million, the European logistics centre is the largest single investment in the 74-year history of HARTING. Around 10,000 packages can be shipped to customers and branches around the world every single day and the 20-metre-high shelf warehouse can accommodate approximately 7,000 pallets and 120,000 containers. A total of 2,000 containers can be taken in and out of the warehouse every hour. Installation work involved laying 100 kilometres of IT cabling, 40 kilometres of sprinkler piping and container conveyor technology with a total length of 1,000 metres. Technical highlights include the highly-automated picking system and the storage area, which is optimally managed and efficiently utilised according to the respective order load and capacity. edge HARTING technology can be seen as soon as you enter the premises, as approaching vehicles are automatically recognised and the barrier lifted to grant access. RFID technology ensures that pallets are correctly placed and loaded. A driverless transport system is responsible for moving goods between the halls and independently selects the optimum route. The highly flexible logistics of the EDC also enable a fast response to changing economic or political framework conditions such as trade barriers. Great emphasis was also placed on generating a sustainable energy supply. The power for the European Distribution Centre is supplied by a photovoltaic system installed on the

roof, while the energy requirements for cooling and heating are covered by internally produced biomethane and a geothermal plant, for which 36 holes needed to be drilled to a depth of 150m. The implemented energy supply minimises Co2 emissions and the cost of the entire centre came in 27 percent lower than the figure originally calculated by the Kreditanstalt fĂźr Wiederaufbau (KfW). 140 employees will work in the logistics centre in a two-shift system and benefit from ergonomically designed workstations, where pallets are lifted by almost a metre for picking, preventing employees from having to bend over constantly. The offices and social spaces, reception, bistro with terrace and seating areas are all bright and friendly and the EDC sits on an 8-hectare site just off the L770 in northwest Espelkamp. Robot versus knot – it’s a tie The applications for robots and automation continue to grow as the technology becomes ever more capable and flexible. Add innovative design concepts to the mix and it is now possible to achieve tasks that were once the strict domain of the human. A system designed and built by Wood – Automated Systems UK to tie knots automatically clearly demonstrates that robots and automation together have taken great leaps forward and are no longer not just for the simple tasks. Many of the traditional tasks for robots involve either handling and picking items from one location to another, or performing process operations such as spot welding, arc welding, gluing, sealing and laser cutting. These are all important applications at the heart of many manufacturing processes, some of which also use external sensors or machine vision to enhance their flexibility and capability. Until now, the more tactile and dextorous tasks, such as tying a knot, have generally been left to operators. Replacing pneumatics Electric linear drives are replacing conventional pneumatic cylinders in more and more applications. The reasons include poor efficiency, high costs for commissioning, reconfiguration, service, and maintenance, and the limited control capabilities of pneumatic systems. Although pneumatic drives have a lower initial purchase cost than that of a linear motor, their on-going energy and service costs are much higher and their long-term life is much shorter. They also need constant maintenance and adjustment to maintain process stability. The linear motor also offers a much simpler solution when considered as a complete system. As a leader in the development of high performance linear motors, LinMot have been offering simple to install cylindrical linear motor with a single cable connection. More recently they now offer even simpler option of a combined drive and motor, only requiring a cable connection directly from the PLC to the motor drive.

The electric linear motor also offers much more flexibility with smooth and very fast programmable motion. This offers improved production stability and monitoring and lower product waste costs. Typical performance is for example is achieving a 400mm stroke in less than 300ms, consuming less than 200W. This can be achieved with total repeatability with very little noise, low maintenance and no adjustment needed. Energy and running costs can be even more important and an analysis of the investment and energy costs over their service life, shows that industrial linear motors from LinMot can pay for themselves within a few months or even weeks, even in simple point-topoint motions between two positions. For example, moving 400 mm with a 15 kg of mass in motion, operating at 30 cycles per minutes and 50% duty cycle (= 2,000 ms cycle time) shows that the savings from the use of an industrial linear motor, compared to the use of a pneumatic cylinder, are 2,300 EUR and 5,900 EUR at 12 and 24 months of service respectively. What may not be immediately realised is the increased lifespan that is possible with an electric linear motor. With no seals and smoother motion, hundreds of millions of cycles of operation can be achieved with complete repeatability during the lifetime. In summary, for linear motions in many applications, the very efficient, all-purpose electric linear motor in tubular form is a good substitute for pneumatic cylinders. New igus material optimises insulation for chainflex VFD and servo cables The trend for variable frequency drives (VFDs) is moving towards more compact drives with the same or a higher performance level than their predecessors.

The more compact design of the motors can result in higher temperatures within the system, compared to larger ranges of the same motors. The result is that the cable heats up via the connector contacts. "Although there are no consequences for the motor and the connected components in the short term, serious problems might occur in the long term,” explains Justin Leonard, thechain director, igus. “If the insulation material for the


cable does not withstand the elevated temperatures in the long term, short circuits can occur inside the cable and in the vicinity of the connectors, which in the worst case can lead to fires. Therefore, the insulation material plays a central role in the selection of the correct servo and motor cables.” Smaller, plastic-insulated round power connectors such as the M16 or M18 are being used more and more for the new motor designs to be able to exploit their

full potential. As a result, when selecting the cable, the engineer not only has to pay attention to the right combination of number of cores and cross-sections, but also to the electrical and thermal specifications. That is why igus has developed a material that meets these new challenges for its latest generation of motor and servo cables.
