Progressive cavity pumps overcome the toughest processing challenges By Lesley Eaton, Business Development and Marketing Manager, SEEPEX

PC pumps are extensively used to treat waste water

Process pumps are the world’s most popular piece of rotating equipment, outnumbering all other process equipment such as compressors, mixers, blowers – in some plants they can represent as much as 85% of rotating equipment. Industries as diverse as oil and gas, food and beverage, water and waste water treatment, pharmaceutical and chemical, all rely on pumps to move products around their processes. Despite pumps being essential to many processing operations, there remain challenges associated with choosing the correct pump for the job. These selection issues can be resolved thanks to developments in the technology deployed in progressive cavity (PC) pumps, which can now deliver superior pumping ability – overcoming some of the common pumping challenges found across all industries.

Challenge 1: Maintaining product integrity The design of the PC pump moves the product through the pump in a series of cavities, which prevents slip from the discharge back through the pump. Slip creates shear, so compared to other pump designs, which have clearances between the lobes, screws or gears, PC pumps have a very low shear action, preserving the quality of shear-sensitive products, all of which are transferred without loss of integrity and functionality.

Challenge 2: Lifting products High suction lifts can be achieved by PC pumps, making them ideal for lifting products from IBC, barrels or mixing tanks. The ability to pump against almost a full vacuum also ensures the efficient use of degassing equipment. Furthermore, surface-mounted PC pumps can lift from wastewater sumps, removing the need for submersible equipment.

Challenge 3: Batch and continuous dosing The cavities have a given chamber volume, ideal for both batch and continuous dosing applications where accuracy is important, such as batch dosing sauce directly onto pizza dough or the addition of chemicals to make up tanks. The flow has very low pulsation too, so dosing the correct amount into mixers or pipelines can be achieved with a smooth, continuous action, removing the need for complicated controls or lengthy calibration methods.

Challenge 4: Handling solid particles The PC pump is able to handle solid particles without compromising either the product or the pump efficiency, ideal in a wide range of applications, from waste water treatment to sauces containing vegetables and spices. They are used in any area where solid particles prove problematical for other pump designs, often causing check valves to stick resulting in failure and downtime.

Challenge 5: Variable flow rates PC pumps are available with flow rates from 100 ml/hr to 500 m³/hr and variable frequency drives can regulate pump speeds to increase or decrease flow rates without the need for pulsation dampeners or complicated calibration systems.

Challenge 6: Viscosity PC pumps can handle products with a wide range of viscosities – from water to over 1,000,000 cps. The pumping action means that variations in viscosity do not affect the flow rate, offering accuracy, process stability and reduced downtime compared to pumps that stall as viscosity increases.

Challenge 7: Solids pumping There are some instances where products don’t free flow, hence the development of open hoppers and integral augers to constantly feed non-flowable media

into the pumping elements. The auger is fabricated as part of the integral coupling rod between the drive and rotor, using the rotation produced by the drive to push forward viscous and even solid products. As a result, products that do not flow are pushed into the pumping elements and can then be moved through pipes (the alternative would have been to use a conveyor). This technique makes long distance transfer of high ds% products possible using PC pumps.

Challenge 8: Design compatibility Corrosive and abrasive products, industry standards, hygiene requirements and operating temperature are all factors that need to be considered when configuring or choosing a pump, to ensure that the build materials are suitable for the product and processing conditions. PC pumps can be constructed – and the product feed mechanism adapted – in line with specific application requirements.

Challenge 9: Operating pressures Pumps have to overcome pressure when transferring products. PC pumps are able to generate pressures up to 48bar as standard, meaning that they can pump long distances – many km in some cases!

Challenge 10: Installation and operation PC pumps are easy to operate and install. They can run both clockwise and counterclockwise, plus they can be installed horizontally or vertically if floor space is tight. Designs such as SEEPEX’s Smart Conveying Technology have smaller installation needs, plus inspection of the pumping elements, removal of blockages and planned maintenance can all be carried out without removing pipework, thus reducing downtime and maintenance costs. sales.uk@seepex.com www.seepex.com

The battery-powered SICK PGT-12PRO is a pocket-sized programming tool, designed initially for rapid configuring and programming of SICK’s AHS/AHM36 programmable absolute encoders and TMS/TMM inclination sensors with CANopen or analogue output. Positioning items in a vacuum is a particular challenge. Only certain materials, components and lubricants meet the requirements in terms of low gas emissions. Often, it is not possible to use liquid lubricants. The bake-out process also puts a great deal of pressure on the positioning system; the thermal stresses which occur at temperatures up to 140°C must be taken into account. August 2017 He explained: “Our work for the company, Joe & The Juice, was an ideal application. It takes four minutes to print a plate and during these four minutes our print operators have to wait until the machine gives a “beep”. Then the operator replaces the plate with a new one and waits again. I noticed that for the most part the operator just waited.” Within the space of a week the UR robot was ordered, delivered, programmed and integrated with the company’s existing hardware; Søren Nielsen describes the programming and interface as being logical and intuitive. With a reach of up to 130 cm, UR10 is the largest robot that Universal Robots offers. It automates processes and manual tasks, where precision is crucial. And by using the integrated force mode, the robot arm can grab the plates and move them up to a facility in the printer so that they are precisely in place. “In four months, we have produced 4,500 plates on one of the machines, where the robot handles the plates at an average speed of two minutes. This has freed up a total capacity of 150 labour hours and saved around DKK 45,000 (over £5,000) in time savings alone,” says Søren Nielsen.

UNIVERSAL ROBOT REMOVES HEAVY LIFTING AND EXTENDS SCOPE OF WORK A UR10 robot arm is helping the Danish printing company, InPrint A/S, pick and place print plates, reducing non-productive wait time while improving the work environment and freeing up two labour hours in capacity per day.

nPrint is a medium-sized printing company with 15 employees and as a turnkey supplier of printed matter the company carries out a broad range of printing tasks. Production often involves heavy lifting and operator down time while the machines are printing but the collaborative UR10 robot arm has reduced this significantly. Søren Nielsen, responsible for large-format production at InPrint, knew where in production the collaborative robot would be most advantageous.

The employees’ skepticism quickly changed to enthusiasm when they experienced the robot arm in action. The UR10 has reduced wait time and made production more efficient. According to Søren H. Nielsen it has also led to fewer overtime hours. All in all, the working environment has improved significantly thanks to the robot from Universal Robots. Søren Nielsen adds: “Standing by a machine waiting for it to say “beep” can drive you crazy. The person who used to wait for the machine now takes care of other important tasks.” The improved working environment and more efficient production isn’t the only advantage that the UR10 has to offer. Søren Nielsen also says that due to the robot’s helping hand, the printing company can now undertake work that was not viable before – first and foremost digital tasks with very large print runs. “With the UR10 robot, we are now competitive in areas that were previously beyond our capacity. Quite simply because we can now have the robot do the repetitive work of one employee, who now handles other tasks,” he concludes. www.universal-robots.com

Many are primarily set mundane and unchallenging tasks, and not given the chance to live up to their full potential by being given the chance to grow. Reliance Launch New Actuators Catalogue Reliance are pleased to announce the launch of a new, dedicated Motorised Linear Actuators catalogue. Containing full details and specifications for the whole product range, the catalogue is intended to be a useful reference tool in helping customers determine the right product for their application. The actuators, manufactured by Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions, are ideal for applications that require high performance and exceptional endurance. Reliance offer a full range of NEMA frame sizes from 8 to 34 in a wide range of force outputs, across three design formats – captive, non-captive and external. The motorised linear actuators are driven by a stepper motor which uses a precision nut rotated by the motor. The shaft is replaced by a lead screw which passes through and engages with the nut. Hence the motive force which rotates the nut generates a corresponding linear motion of the lead screw. This approach can greatly simplify the design of linear motion solutions, whilst using a thoroughly understood and economic technology. The use of stepper motors also means high resolution and accuracy can be achieved where precision motion is required, as the individual rotary steps of the motor deliver corresponding linear steps of the lead screw. Reliance’s actuators have the potential to deliver up to 20 million cycles, and rotary motors can provide up to 25,000 hour’s service. The new catalogue features two types of motorised linear actuators: Hybrid and Can-Stack. Hybrid linear actuators are ideal for applications requiring a combination of precise positioning, rapid motion and long life, typically in medical equipment, semi-conductor handling and valve control. These unique hybrid stepper motor linear actuators use a proprietary manufacturing process which incorporates engineering thermoplastics in the rotor drive nut and a stainless steel acme lead screw. This allows the linear actuator to be much quieter, more efficient and more durable than the v-thread and bronze nut configuration commonly used in other linear actuators. Can-stack linear actuators contain a threaded rotor with a lead-screw shaft able to drive linear motion in both directions. The pressed steel body encloses precise

internal components, which means this design delivers an economic solution for electrically driven linear motion. Applications include medical instrumentation, machinery automation, semiconductor, robotics and other automated devices which require precise remote controlled linear movement in a broad range of temperature environments. INSEVIS S7-PLC’s Remote Visualization Success stories with INSEVIS: S7-Panels and extensions

Bernecker rollforming & tubes GmbH mainly use S7- CPUs from Siemens for the machinery control and now after trials they have integrated S7-CPUs from INSEVIS as well. Bernecker required a costeffective method of providing remote asset visualization and decided to invest in the Insevis Panel -HMI’s which were found to good performers but also easy to setup and manage. Upgrading to the Insevis PLC’s removed the need to upgrade from the version on Simatic Manager for S7 Programming as Insevis PLC’s are fully compatible – thus saving expensive license upgrades associated with the latest TIAPortal suite of Software. Mr. Peter Klamuth and his younger colleague Julian Werner further developed their HMI / remote HMI visualizations by creating a binary file from the existing visualization of a 10“-Panel-HMI and exporting

TE Connectivity Extends Servo Motor Solutions with Motorman Hybrid Connectors TE Connectivity (TE), a world leader in connectivity and sensors, now has a comprehensive portfolio of connectors for all types of electric motors, for use in diverse applications. hybrid connector provides this decentralized technology with a single cable for power, signal and data, and enables manufacturers to optimize production to align with Industry 4.0. Two Fast Ethernet sockets offer the full benefits of real-time automation control while reducing cabling complexity and cost. TE’s Motorman hybrid connector is easy and safe to configure, and has simple diagnostic access through an easy-to-open side cover, allowing diagnostics and maintenance without disconnecting any cables. Reliable communication up to Cat5e in harsh environments is possible. System costs are kept low due to the use of TE’s MCON interconnection system with its stamped multiple-contact-point contacts, and processing can be done in application tooling, which guarantees high reproducibility. Customized coding features of the insert avoid connector displacement in use.

Earlier this year, TE extended its range of Motorman hybrid connectors, with a “Shroud” version that includes secondary locking for more advanced security, and a cable crimped version available for cabinet applications. These new versions supplement the original version for use on AC servo motors with a printed circuit board (PCB). The connectors are available with a robust metal enclosure suitable for harsh industrial environments or a lower-cost version with a plastic enclosure. Motorman hybrid connectors are rated IP65 for water and dust protection and can withstand 50 g crash shock. Operating temperature range is from minus 40 degrees Celsius up to 85 degrees Celsius. Exact8 and Exact12 Distribution Systems Excellent visual diagnostics The passive distribution boxes from Murrelektronik’s Exact family feature improved troubleshooting making it easy for technicians to optically assess the status of systems and applications. Designed to reduce wiring efforts from concept to completion, they are also equipped with LEDs for each module and each port. XYZ heavy-duty machine tools meet the needs of the oil and gas sector

XYZ Machine Tools’ large capacity, heavy-duty, machine ranges cover machining centres with axis travels of up to 3000 by 1000 by 800 mm (XYZ), XL and Oil Country lathes with swings over the bed of 1100 mm and between centres distance of up to 12 metres, making them ideal for many applications across the oil and gas sector. They combine capability with reliability and excellent value for money The XYZ Super Heavyweight vertical machining centres, XYZ 2010HS, XYZ 2510HS and XYZ 3010HS, all feature an 8000 revs/min spindle rated at 42 kW/56 hp (23 kW continuous), agility is provided by axis travels of 16 m/min in all axes ranging from 2000 mm by 1000 mm by 800 mm (XYZ) on the 2010 model, through to 3000 mm by 1000 mm by 800 mm on the larger 3010 variant. Moving up the size range are the XL 1200, XL 1500 and XL 2200, with the designation referring to the swing over the bed, with between centre distance ranging from one to 12 metres. These larger machines feature a 37.2 kW (50 hp) spindle motor with the exception of the XL 2200 with a 59.6 kW/80 hp unit, with up to four gear ranges available, dependant on model specified. Solid cast, ribbed, beds are used for rigidity along with hardened and ground vee and flat ways. A Siemens 840D conversational Shop Turn control with its easy to program interface is fitted

as standard. The XYZ Oil Country lathe completes the large turning capacity, with its 1100 mm swing over the bed (750 over the cross slide) and between centre distances between 1.5 and 16 metres making it ideal for work in the oil and gas sector. For pipe work the machine is equipped as standard with a 420 mm spindle bore (310 mm diameter option). With the standard spindle the gearbox has three speed ranges up to a maximum of 250 revs/min, powered by a 63.3 kW (85 hp) spindle motor. The small bore option also has three gear ranges, with a maximum speed of 400 revs/min.

LaserCube From TLM Laser - The Cost Effective Solution For Laser Cutting Small Parts Laser cutting is often the preferred process for metal cutting, and indeed there are innumerable systems in production today cutting and profiling a wide range of metal parts for a multitude of applications. Many of these systems use high power CO2 lasers to process large sheet sizes, often 4.0 metres x 2.0 metres, and up to 25mm thick. Although compact in size, LaserCube is truly a general-purpose laser cutting system with high-velocity motion stages and high CW power lasers, providing fast and efficient cutting of carbon steel parts and reflective metals such as copper, brass and aluminium. With many alloys or higher-value metals only available in smaller-size sheets, the 1,250 mm cutting bed of the LaserCube is the perfect size for cost effective material processing. The system is also available in a wide range of different power configurations, allowing users to select the power they need. The range of

fiber lasers used within the system, are entirely solid state, with no mechanical cavity resonators or mirrors and no adjustable or replaceable parts within the laser. Light is delivered along a flexible optical fiber pipe that is plugged directly into the laser cutting head, eliminating the need for optics and any adjustments in the beam delivery path. With an emission wavelength of just 1 micron, fiber lasers’ efficiency in cutting metals is better than traditional CO2 alternatives, allowing higher cutting speeds or the option of using a lower power laser. Typical estimates show an IPG fiber laser cutting 1 mm thick steel approximately 3.5 times faster than an equivalently powered CO2 system. The IPG’s fiber lasers used within LaserCube offer the highest wall-plug efficiency of any commercial laser. Not only is less electricity consumed whilst cutting parts, but the cooling required to remove unwanted heat is also proportionally reduced. This in turn decreases the power rating required to support the installation. Achieving in excess of 37% wall-plug power efficiency, combined with improved material coupling characteristics, IPG

lasers typically use 70% less electrical energy than traditional CO2 alternatives in metal cutting applications. The LaserCube system is offered with lasers ranging in power from 500 W to 4000 W. By offering such a broad range of options, users are able to select the exact cutting solution required. For thinner materials, the YLR-500 provides good cutting performance in a small package that is integrated within the work-cell, reducing the overall system footprint. This laser is air-cooled, eliminating the need for a chiller and reducing still further, electrical supply demands. The higher power YLS-series lasers are mounted externally to the workstation. These are water-cooled and housed in a NEMA 12, air-conditioned and sealed cabinet, providing additional protection for harsh environments. IPG’s YLS lasers are modular, with output of several fiber laser modules combined into a single output fiber. In the unlikely event of a module failure, the remaining modules will immediately compensate for the loss by maintaining the output power and allowing part cutting to continue without

REIDEN’S RX12 UNIVERSAL COMBINATION 5-AXIS MILLING AND TURNING CENTRE CELL AT EMO 2017

T

he latest addition to the highly successful Reiden Technik RXSeries of combination 5-axis universal milling and turning machining centres is to be exhibited at EMO 2017 in Hannover. The RX12 which is available in the UK through 2D CNC Machinery of Hinckley, incorporates Reiden’s patented double-drive spindle technology (DDT) with the new machine developed around Hydropol, a highly rigid specialised concrete and steel composite for the bed and column that can be completely recycled. The machine is demonstrated in cell form with two pallet system and has axis travels of 1,300 mm in X, 1,450 mm in Y, and 1,000 mm in Z with rapid traverse rates of 50 m/ min. In addition, the A-axis for the spindle is 0 to 90 deg to enable horizontal and vertical cutter positions with the 1,200 mm diameter rotary table which has a swing of 1,200 mm and rotates through a programmable gearless drive at up to 400 revs/min. The construction of the Reiden RX12 around its Hydropol composite provides high orders of inherent stability. It absorbs vibration and has significant levels of dynamic stiffness. In producing the composite against a normal cast iron frame, 30 per cent less primary energy is used and CO2 levels are 66 per cent lower.

As a result of the construction, both 5-axis milling and turning operations can be integrated into a single machine setting and benefit from Reiden’s patented spindle DDT development. The spindle is able to swivel between horizontal and vertical planes within one second and the slim head design has pneumatic clamping to hold position when used for turning cycles in conjunction with the direct drive rotary table. This table has automatic imbalance detection and counterweights to minimise vibration.

Multi-million pound boost for West of England’s aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors is unveiled

A major investment in state-of-the-art industry facilities for the booming aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors has been unveiled at City of Bristol College.

T

he development of a £4m extension to the College’s Advanced Engineering Centre, funded by the West of England Combined Authority and Local Enterprise Partnership through the Local Growth Fund, will reinforce the West of England’s reputation for hi-tech innovation and as a leading provider of skilled labour in these high growth industries. At a topping out ceremony the building was officially handed over by David Snell, Operations Director at contractors, Kier Western and Wales to Lee Probert, Chief Executive and Principal of City of Bristol College. The event was also attended by applicants who will soon be attending the new look facility when it opens for business in October 2017.

Probert said: “The region is renowned globally for its aerospace and engineering innovation which acts as a magnet for inward investment. The Advanced Engineering Centre is designed to support the growth of the regional economy through providing work ready students in these key sectors. By taking students from the classroom to the workshop, it forms part of our drive to create ‘passports to jobs’ for our students.” West of England Mayor, Tim Bowles, said: “The West of England region is the largest aerospace cluster in the country and we have some 1,500 manufacturing enterprises. This expanded facility at the College will support our local strengths in these sectors by providing a future skills pool for the region.” The extended facility will include a number of specialist labs to support skills development in the design and maintenance of aircraft and engineering systems. It will also include state-of-theart computer aided design and 3d printing equipment to support skills development in design and prototyping. In addition, there will be a dedicated aeronautical structures lab for Airbus, one of some 150

plus employers who are users of the facility. There are currently some 250 apprentices on site and a further 60 will come through the doors of the new facility over the next three years. It provides a significant boost to encouraging youngsters to enter the exciting world of advanced engineering and develop real hands-on skills that are vital for the future prosperity of themselves, their employers and their communities.”

igus showcases latest automation and industry 4.0 technologies at Northern Manufacturing 2017 igus is returning to this year’s Northern Manufacturing & Electronics exhibition held at Event City, Manchester, on 27th – 28th September 2017. Visitors to the stand (D44) will see a wide range of cost-effective, lightweight and maintenance-free bearings and cable management systems for a variety of applications.

redictive maintenance is the cornerstone of Industry 4.0 and the factory of tomorrow – igus’ smart plastics warn of potential failure in good time before unplanned and very costly downtimes occur. At the event, igus will be showing new and improved smart plastics products. These include, the isense EC.RC, a new system for monitoring e-chains, the optimised CF.Q module for the intelligent chainflex cables that customers are already using today and the intelligent iglidur PRT slewing ring bearings. Injection-moulded, 3D-printed or machined from bar stock, igus offers engineers a wide range of possibilities to obtain their self-lubricating parts, such as gears or plain bearings quickly and cost-effectively. During the show igus will introduce a new process for the production of 3D printed injection mould tools that allows engineers to solve difficult technical challenges quickly. The entire range of 50 iglidur highperformance plastics are available using this new process, including specialists for high load, food contact, underwater or high temperature applications. Depending on the iglidur material chosen, the mould is

either SLA or SLS printed and then used immediately in the injectionmoulding machine. Thus, parts are ready for shipment within a few days. The material structure of the printed injection mould ensures that it can withstand the high temperatures during injection moulding, which means that one mould can produce prototypes and small batches up to 500 pieces cost-effectively and quickly. Optimum use of installation space, light weight and high stability – these are just some of the benefits of the E4.1L lean energy chain from igus. Compared to the E4.1, the application-oriented design of the E4.1 L could save so much mass that the chain is about 30 percent lighter; this brings an additional advantage - a considerable amount of drive power can be saved, making the application more energy efficient. The E4.1L can also accommodate more hoses and cables in a given space envelope. The E4.1L lean energy chain is now available from stock in numerous interior heights and widths. As for the open energy chain, igus also offers an ESD version and even a high-temperature option for the enclosed energy tube to protect against hot chips and debris. The growth in automation will lead to great job satisfaction according to the IFR

By Paul Wilkinson, Commercial & Information Systems Manager at Pacepacker Services It’s a fact of life; mundane tasks are not something people passionately relish. Yet, the fear of job losses due to automation continues to unsettle workers in the manufacturing sector. However, we believe that the growth in smart machines and automation will actually be a catalyst for new and more exciting knowledgebased jobs in the future. When reports are released it creates an element of scaremongering among the workforce. The fact is, robots and smart technologies are filtering into every work environment. For the manufacturing sector, rather than dehumanising people, many of the tools today can

free workers from labour intensive and mundane tasks, enabling them to focus on more creative aspects of their job, like problem solving. According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), two million jobs will be created by 2020 because of the robotics industry.* Certain jobs may be reduced by robotics and automation, but the study highlights that many more jobs are created, leading to greater job satisfaction. Enterprises of all sizes are realising that they can take labour out of their costs and redeploy it elsewhere if they automate. In our view, automation safeguards the roles of the majority, making

businesses more efficient and enabling it to maintain and hopefully expand its contracts by improved quality and production throughput. Technological advances also mean today’s robots can work safely in the same areas as existing staff without the need for additional outlay on protective measures. These robots are fast and reliable, making them perfectly capable of freeing up manpower to assist elsewhere in the factory. As manufacturers compete harder on price, and business costs are being further compounded by recent policy announcements like the national living wage and

new pension arrangements, automation will help business models evolve faster, increasing their chance of survival. Work should be a source of inspiration and happier employees equate to more productive employees. If automation can assist businesses to survive, increase productivity and create greater human fulfilment, everyone benefits.

ANNOUNCES €4 MILLION INVESTMENT TO SERVICE EUROPEAN GROWTH Rapid prototyping and on-demand manufacturer Proto Labs reports its largest European infrastructure investment since the UK business was established in 2005. The business has financed a spend of around €4 million on new manufacturing technology and facility renovations; primarily in Telford, UK and also its other locations across Europe. The investment is in response to current and projected customer demand for Proto Labs’ advanced manufacturing services from across Europe. During June and July 2017, Proto Labs, digital manufacturing service providers in 3D printing, CNC machining and injection moulding, confirmed their large-scale purchase of Haas CNC machines and ARBURG injection moulding machines. “Proto Labs offers a supremely fast and reliable service,” said Lee Ball, Proto Labs General Manager in the UK. “Because customers today across all industries require fast turnaround, especially in product development. Our continuous investment allows us to meet the ever growing needs of our thousands of customers across all industries.”

The new Haas machines will be configured for either mould making or component machining, with both of these services growing at a rapid pace. Including the new machines, Proto Labs UK’s inventory now totals 130 CNC machining and 57 injection moulding machines. “We are seeing demand for moulded parts increase across the board year-over-year, from both long-standing and new customers, for a range of products and industries. To meet predicted levels of growth, a critical leverage is this investment in new technology.” said Lee Ball. Demand for the Proto Labs’ industrial 3D printing service, which operates from two sites in Germany, is also growing. “The rapid increase in order intake is being fuelled by more customers, across varied industry sectors, now realising the extensive possibilities to prototype parts with complex geometries cost-effectively using 3D printing technology. For certain parts, the only possible option is to manufacture using this technology.” said Daniel Cohn, Managing Director of the 3D printing

“For example, our Eschenlohe facility is certified with EN ISO 13485:2012 quality management standards. For customers, they benefit from our technical capabilities to manufacture specific medical devices using 3D printing DMLS technology, including parts approved for human implantation,” continued Daniel Cohn. This recent capacity growth is reinforced by business expansion across Proto Labs’ European locations. Since 2015, the business has supported annual growth in excess of 20 percent in manufacturing and engineering, sales and administrative functions. “Additional space will be required within the next 18 to 24 months to accommodate our projected level of growth, both to our office space and manufacturing capacity,” said Lee Ball. A similar expansion plan is also in development to support expected growth in the company’s German facilities at Eschenlohe and Feldkirchen.

Always under control – easy supervision of constantly changing temperature data Low energy Bluetooth data loggers enable smart monitoring via mobile devices Safeguarding temperature can be very time-consuming: constant monitoring of different locations that have to be controlled simultaneously and maintaining consistent documentation are complex tasks. But thanks to the development of simple Bluetooth data loggers, this doesn’t have to be the case. T&D Corporation, Japanese market leader for wireless data loggers, has developed a new generation of devices. The TR4 series data loggers automatically collect temperature data and use low energy Bluetooth 4.0 to send it to any iOS/Android device. The loggers are detected without the need for pre-registration. Data can be collected from multiple loggers simultaneously. Two dedicated apps make it easy to monitor temperatures 24 hours a day and enable instant saving and sharing of collected data: The ThermoREC app collects data and displays it in neatly arranged graphs and tables, while the ThermoStorage app uploads data to T&D’s cloud, the WebStorage Service. Every account has at its disposal 20 MB of free storage space. For added reassurance, a special auto archiving function makes sure that data files are zipped and archived before this limit is reached. To prevent unauthorized access to stored data, users receive a unique ID and password after registration.

Should data need to be shared, access can be established by setting up a “read-only ID” that enables data to be viewed but not modified or deleted. Each TR4 logger can be set to 15 different recording intervals, from one second to 60 minutes, and has a logging capacity of up to 16.000 readings. Battery life is up to one and a half years. The TR4 series comprises three competitively priced models, two of them waterproof. With various sensor types and measurement ranges, these new generation devices serve diverse application requirements: the TR41 covers temperature measurements from -40 to 80°C (waterproof, internal sensor); the TR42 measures from -60 to 155°C (waterproof, external sensor), while the TR45 for industrial use is available for thermocouple types K, J, T and S, covering -199 to 1.700°C, as well as for types Pt 100/Pt 1000 with a range of between -199 and 600°C. Thanks to this broad spectrum of measurement capabilities, the TR4 series offers huge flexibility for multiple applications. The loggers are ideal for heating control in housing, climatic control of agricultural sites as well as for safeguarding refrigerators, sales cabinets and storage facilities. Their special features make them the perfect way to supervise transportation of sensitive goods like fresh or frozen food and products for medical use.

THE NEW ISO STANDARDS AND WHAT ADVANTAGES THEY CAN BRING TO YOUR COMPANY Greg Elwell, Certification UK Technical Manager at Bureau Veritas summarises what the transition to two new updated standards means, and the benefits the certification can have for businesses. Organisations and their leaders are facing change at an unprecedented speed, as digital technology and increasing globalisation continues to impact on businesses. The new ISO standards are a response to these forces, allowing organisations to continue to add value, while helping them to face the future. One overall change is that the standard has a new structure. ISO 9001:2015 now follows the same overall structure as other ISO management system standards (known as the High-Level Structure), making it easier to integrate multiple management systems going forward. The changes in the new standards focus around three main areas; Context of the Organisation, Leadership, and Risk Management. In addition to these, Continual Improvement remains a key element of the certification process. These areas present opportunities for positive change through recertification to the new ISO standards.

Context of the Organisation The updated standards place new emphasis on an organisation’s specific context. Companies need to abandon the old precept of prioritising only product, employees, and process, and rethink the unique context of their activities in association with the needs and demands of a wider set of interested parties. This can be achieved through an examination of the business environment, the current market, competitors, new technologies, prices, perceived quality, and user trends, necessary to remain competitive. By focusing on process rather than procedure, the new standards give organisations more freedom to show how it controls its risks and impacts on stakeholders.

Leadership Now, the standards favour approaching change in a planned and systematic way, by taking into account: potential consequences; the integrity of the management system; the availability of resources or allocation of responsibilities.

A new specific requirement is embedded leadership – the concept that continuous improvement needs to be backed and led by top management, with employees now also fully understanding and taking ownership for their roles. The level of involvement by the CEO, board of Directors and Managers in certification, as favoured by the new standards, is ultimately designed to have a positive effect on customer satisfaction.

Risk There are a wide range of risks concerning an Organisation’s Leadership today, including; inadequate infrastructure and energy costs, access to key skills, staff retention, avoiding the loss of know-how, and social instability. The new standards reflect the view that risks can be seen as opportunities or threats, and part of the internal culture of prevention and improvement. They provide a guide to organisations to establish a strategy to eliminate the risks seen as threats, through options for addressing risk, which include: avoidance of risk, eliminating risk, hedging the likelihood or consequences of risk, or acceptance of risk by informed decision. One strong driver for certification is managing the risks to suppliers and other interested parties, for companies involved in exporting overseas. It is a challenge to produce the same products in different countries, and certification can provide reassurance in this context. Similarly, businesses entering new sectors, or subsectors, as they look to grow, can use certification to manage risk and provide security.

Continual Improvement Reviewing the standards is a good way for an organisation to identify new opportunities for continual improvement and for managing risk adequately. Key to this is re-evaluating the business and seeing the overall certification process as a guarantor of quality, not just final certification. As an organisation changes, certification needs to accompany and accommodate this change.

Organisations that match their strategy with an improved Management System, will be well placed to gain new opportunities. By revising standards and using updated standards to pursue the path of continual improvement, organisations can ensure they remain competitive in the long term.

Timings The new ISO 9001 was launched in September 2015, which means businesses have until September 2018 to transition from ISO 9001:2008 to the new ISO 9001:2015, if they wish to maintain their certification. Because these revisions are classed as new versions of the standard, businesses will need to ensure a new contract has been put in place with their Certification Body. At Bureau Veritas, for example, clients are to contact us in advance of the audit in which they intend to transition, then the contract and systems can be updated to allow us to support them in the best way.

SET NEW STANDARDS IN INSERT PRODUCTION AND TOOL MEASUREMENT Included among the Walter and Ewag innovations for tool machining will be developments in Ewag tool insert grinding and Walter tool measuring, Walter Ewag UK reports – and both set new standards in insert production and the measurement of complex tools.

M

aking its first public debut, the six-axis Ewag Compact Line is a high-precision, compact and flexible machine for the grinding - including peripheral grinding - of inserts in tungsten carbide, cermet, ceramic, PCBN and PCD. Applying protective chamfers on inserts’ main cutting edges is ensured by the machine’s optimised kinematics as well as by the new C axis. Machine downtime is minimised by the machine’s short travel distances and by the integrated six-axis Fanuc robot that offers agile handling and a high degree of flexibility for loading complex inserts. The Ewag Compact Line’s ‘threein-one’ dressing unit ensures grinding wheel concentricity and high process reproducibility, plus offers wheel dressing, regeneration and ‘crushing’ in a single package. Machine usability and effectiveness is also guaranteed by the integrated ProGrind software, and the Fanuc control system enables all grinding routines to be programmed quickly and easily via its user-friendly touch-screen panel. Also on the stand (after its debut earlier this year), Walter’s new Heliset Plus manual measuring device promises to help optimise the erosion (machining) times of complex tools by up to 30 per cent by being ‘integrated’ into the tool production process. Data output via XML to the Walter Window Mode software – in the Walter Helitronic Power Diamond or Diamond Evolution erosion machines, or Walter Helicheck measuring machines - also saves valuable working time. With no need for formal training and with no machine programming, operators can now view a ‘live’ front light image of a tool for the fast positioning of measuring points and the representation of cutting edges already measured. Tools up to 350 mm diameter and 400 mm long can be measured. The Walter Heliset Plus workstation set-up includes manual axis adjustment, ISO 50 spindle, a front light and a back light camera with 45x magnification. Perfect Motion for Liquid Products At drinktec 2017, Baumüller will introduce complete solution packages and industry- From September 11-15, 2017, Baumüller will participate in drinktec 2017, the world’s leading trade fair for the beverage and liquid food industry in Munich. In hall B3 at stand 321, the Nurembergbased drive and automatization specialist will present its specific industry solutions for the beverage industry: From a drive with an aseptic surface for transport tasks in the food sector to compact local drive technology for minimum wiring effort. In addition, a compact high-torque motor with extremely low self-heating as well as a stainless steel flange for easy cleaning will be presented.

Increased productivity due to the intelligent overall solution The drive system ETAŋ drive will be the highlight at the Baumüller stand. The motor-gear combination achieves degrees of efficiency of up to 90 percent and is also ideally suited for aseptic applications, like in the beverage industry, duet o its surface properties. The ETAŋ drive will be in use on a transport and conveyor belt for beverage bottles at drinktec. Minimal overall installed size and high system efficiency characterize the gear motor ETA drive, which was specially developed for the food and beverage industry. The drive system is equipped with an aseptic, completely enclosed housing and is therefore particularly suitable for transport tasks in the food sector.

Service 4.0: Digitization Increases Availability An innovation in the field of service is BAUDIS IoT, a system for the process optimization and for the predictive maintenance system of existing and new machines. BAUDIS IoT is the consistent enhancement of the BAUDIS diagnostic system developed by Baumüller, which has successfully been in use for more than 20 years. BAUDIS increases the process reliability and availability of production and is successfully used worldwide in machines and plants. BAUDIS IoT, the latest version, is an IoT-capable diagnostic and communication system that allows for a simple networking of machines and systems via the Internet and the intelligent analysis of data. The networked version benefits from the long-standing expertise of a successful system. The system can be used independently of the manufacturer of the automation components and the sensors and therefore can easily be retrofitted and upgraded. It is therefore equally suitable for greenfield and brownfield plants, i.e. for the digitization of new and existing production facilities. BAUDIS IoT allows for the continuous monitoring of automation components and machine states, data recording and analysis and the generation and output of a recommendation for action. The evaluation always occurs with the latest available algorithms. The system is thus continuously made more intelligent and uses algorithms to develop independent solutions (machine learning). By avoiding production errors, productivity increases and does so automatically through a self-regulating process.

Product Highlights The b maXX 2500 decentralized drive, which combines the converters from the b maXX 3300 series with robust DSD, DSC and DSP servomotors, is especially suitable for filling systems with many individual drives.
