wi-Q Technologies announces partnership with Dubai-based, Vector Technologies

September 2017

Mobile ordering innovator wi-Q Technologies has announced that Dubai-based IT and connectivity experts Vector Technologies, has joined its reseller program in UAE. As a wi-Q Technologies reseller, Vector Technologies will work with existing and new, wi-Q and Mi-Room clients, ensuring a seamless sales and implementation process for customers in the region. wi-Q Technologies are the award-winning developers behind cloud-based mobile ordering solutions, wi-Q for F&B and Mi-Room for hotel guest services. The wi-Q and Mi-Room solutions allow customers to browse, order and pay for food and beverages, or hotel guest services, instantly from any internet enabled device without downloading an app. The solutions integrate with common hospitality systems such as Oracle Hospitality, and even allow hotel guests to charge items to their room. Vector Technologies, founded in 2015, have rapidly earned a reputation as connectivity experts in Dubai amongst a wide variety of individuals and businesses. Their experience in bringing new technology to market – without all the unnecessary jargon – makes them a perfect partner for wi-Q Technologies. Graham Cornhill, co-founder of wi-Q Technologies, said, “The UAE is leading hospitality technology innovation, and we are

4

therefore delighted to welcome Vector Technologies to our reseller program. Not only do they have a clear understanding of the potential of our mobile ordering solutions, they fully understand the challenges and the journey hospitality venues have in the implementation of new technology. “Vector Technologies’ jargon-free, customer-focused approach to business is refreshing and we look forward to working with them closely in Dubai.” Burhan Kamal, Managing Director of Vector Technologies, sees a strong fit with market demand and current trends. “The global market and indeed, our market, has a strong affinity for mobile and online ordering of food and services. “Mi-Room and wi-Q provide a fulfillment of that expectation for hotel guests and those customers in food and beverage outlets.” He continued, “It is important for us at Vector to provide a substantial improvement and value by increasing the efficiency of food and beverage outlets of both hotels and restaurants. Our partnership with wi-Q Technologies provides another opportunity to continue fulfilling that promise.” www.vtec.ae

Comesto joins with BlueCart

Comesto, the innovative new British hospitality supply chain platform, has formed a strategic partnership with US hospitality tech giant BlueCart to create a totally new hospitality tech solution for the UK which will turn the industry upside down. Both systems are simple and intuitive, but smart in both features and reach. Comesto’s platform for increasing range and quality and comparing prices, for everything an operator needs to purchase, partnered with BlueCart’s app-based ordering and stockroom management service is unique in providing equal benefits for buyers and suppliers. It brings them together, offering buyers price comparison and a simple, direct way to view and contact a large but programmatically targeted range of suppliers. For suppliers, it’s a direct trading and marketing platform which connects them to buyers who are actively looking for products and services like theirs. With a dedicated online profile and eCommerce facility as part of the deal, it gives them the tools to pitch and sell directly, minimising spend on sales activity, advertising and marketing. BlueCart has a viral propagation facility which encourages suppliers to sign up to BlueCart if an order comes from a BlueCart buyer (and vice versa). This facility will now be offered to Comesto customers to provide all members with better buying and frictionless business growth.

8

Comesto’s USP is that it is a B2B membership platform offering an industry-wide proposition. No similar platform offers this breadth. Customers are effectively members of a trade club - but one which covers the whole industry. This gives them a safe, legal environment in which to market, advertise, buy and supply directly, with no wasted effort and with minimal costs. This will come in very useful when European data protection rules (prohibiting emails to potential customers unless they have ‘opted in’) are enforced from 25 May 2018; Comesto buyers ‘opt in’ to contact from suppliers when they sign up. Valentine Smith, Comesto CEO, said: “We believe that the time is right for a comprehensive service of this kind, and the UK is the best place to launch it. With a growing eat-out culture and the unique British gastropub offer, savvy operators have invested heavily in front-of-house tech such as booking and shift software. However the back end operations often lag behind, with operators too busy to chase the best deals. What is needed is a total solution to drive and professionalise back end operations.” BlueCart’s stockroom and ordering software solution has grown exponentially across the USA since it started in 2015, with more than 20,000 major restaurant chains, wholesalers and producers using the platform to drive business efficiency. With a complete suite of services, simple to set up and to use, BlueCart increases efficiency and cuts waste, putting better management

in the hands of all users, from single high street venues to major chains and from small artisan producers, to the biggest distributors. “We are looking forward to working with Comesto to offer wholesale restaurant and supplier mobile platforms that increase order efficiency and supplier transaction volume to their customers. We are excited about our expansion efforts into the UK market as BlueCart’s 32,000 customer base continues to grow globally,” said Konstantin Zvereff, CEO of BlueCart. If you are a buyer, the combined Comesto and BlueCart service provides a purchasing and stock management tool which is simple to setup and use. It’s like a wholesale catalogue you design and own - your selection, your prices, your order quantities and your delivery schedule - putting you in control. Upload your current supplier’s catalogue, and if Comesto alerts you to a better price or higher quality from another supplier, just swap it. And if you need a new stock item, simply search Comesto, check out prices and quality, get samples if you wish and drop your selection into your BlueCart shopping basket. For suppliers, Comesto’s unique marketing and buyer search service markets your brand and goods to a huge client base, supplies and converts enquiries into orders. BlueCart processes your orders, arranges special pricing and deliveries and gives you a free eCommerce platform for direct sales.

Methven’s award-winning Satinjet technology delivers advanced and invigorating showering, with colliding twin-jets of water that deliver more than 300,000 droplets of water per second for an invigorating, luxurious showering experience. The shower heads are also designed to perform exceptionally at lower flow rates, providing a saving on water and energy bills.

Methven Wins Bathroom Contract for £18 million Hotel Expansion

Global designer and manufacturer of premium showers and tapware, Methven UK, announces a new deal with Ten Square Hotel, a luxury property in Belfast which is undergoing an £18 million expansion. Following phase one of the expansion in December 2016, which saw Satinjet™ showers fitted in 55 bathrooms, Methven has been recommissioned to roll out its awardwinning shower products into 60 more rooms in the four-star hotel. Kaha concealed thermostatic shower valves were chosen for the renovations, with their slick aesthetic

10

Helen Scott, Bathroom Specification Manager at David Scott Tile, Bath and Stone Specialists who supplied the products to the hotel said: “Any hotel specification requires longevity both in design and performance. Methven was the perfect choice for us with the added benefit of energy and water saving for our client. We were delighted with the shower fittings and Methven’s customer service made my job so easy.” The multimillion pound upgrade of the property, which is located in Belfast’s central Donegall Square, is part of a total capital investment of almost £18 million by owners, Loughview Leisure Group.

Which EPoS can help your restaurant beat the cost of operations? By Luis De Souza, Chief Executive Officer of NFS Technology Group Restaurant and pub operating costs now stand at more than 50% of turnover, according to a recent survey of performance in the market. And although the survey also discovered a lot of confidence within the sector, it surely makes sense to make every effort keep operating costs under control. As many successful restaurants and bars have found, the answer can be surprisingly easy: restaurateurs and bar operations need to invest in a good EPoS (electronic point of sale) system. This up-to-the-minute technology helps to control every aspect of the business, all the way from maintaining viable stock levels to ordering. It’s also able to reduce labour time

12

Do you throw a lot of stock away? How much is it costing you every week?

2.

Do you know which of your dishes sell the best – and which ones should be knocked off your menu?

3.

Do your labour costs seem too high for the number of covers you serve every day?

4.

Do customers ever complain about slow service or getting the wrong meal? What are your busiest times – and are they actually the most profitable?

5.

6.

Which of your suppliers offer you the best prices on a regular basis?

If you don’t have a good EPoS system like Aloha from NFS, chances are you either don’t know the answers to some of the questions – or if you do, you can’t say what the reasons behind them might be. Technology has made a fantastic response to the changing needs of today’s challenging restaurant environment, and the best EPoS systems for restaurants can provide major benefits. Restaurants and bars are dealing with a shift in diner spending patterns. They are seeing a rise in popularity of casual dining experiences – an average diner is now only in a dining outlet for 45 minutes Competition is also on the increase from outlets using delivery services including Deliveroo. and costs by giving serving staff easy to use handheld devices that can send orders straight from tableside to the kitchen. Sounds attractive? Of course – but how do you determine what’s the best EPoS system for your restaurant? Naturally, you need to think hard about your business and determine the challenges that you want to overcome.

So how does EPoS help? We have identified 5 key questions you should to ask your software vendor. 1.

Can your EPoS system capture data that will help you improve your supply chain and stock ordering choices, identifying dishes that are selling well?

Can your staff use dedicated handheld devices, iPads or mobiles to take orders with this system?

3.

Does the EPoS enable tableside orders and payments to be taken tableside so your staff do not waste time walking around?

4.

Does the system integrate with a kitchen automation system so your chefs can begin fulfilling orders when they are sent from tableside? Will it integrate with other systems such as accounting, as well?

5.

Which businesses like yours use the system – are there testimonials?

EPoS systems are available to suit any size of restaurant or hotel; some can be provides as web-based enterprise systems accessible anywhere with an internet connection. This is useful when you have a group of hotels or bars to run, and reduces the duplication of technology and roles in different locations. Any data the EPoS collects should be accessible as comprehensive reports to provide an end-to-end view of operations in your organisation, no matter its size. EPoS can even help with difficult areas including fraud prevention – unusual behaviours can be easily spotted because transactions are tracked – and table management. Capturing guests’ data also means a restaurant can devise targeted marketing campaigns to will appeal to different preferences. The best EPoS systems for restaurants even alert restaurant managers that a diner is posting adverse social media reviews so you can address issues before diners leave your establishment. CAU restaurants have used Aloha EPoS for ten years and plan to roll out the system as the group grows, according to Estates and Property manager Colin Williams. He says: “It’s definitely saving us money in terms of time, efficiency and capturing data so we can identify trends. It’s amazing for stock control – one of our biggest challenges - and it integrates well with our other platforms. Our market is constantly changing, and Aloha helps us keep up with that. In all, it helps us deliver a slicker service.” That’s a great recommendation for the capabilities of state-of-the-art EPoS.

Mobile Tech

The Key to Guest Engagement Adactus has been at the forefront of mobile technology for over ten years, working with several major restaurant brands. We built Pizza Hut Delivery’s first online ordering system and developed Pizza Hut Restaurants’ loyalty app. We’ve recently started working on operational solutions for TGI Fridays and we’re about to launch a new, mobile-focussed website for a famous hamburger chain – watch this space! Our analytics team, Data Know How, has provided CRM and data analytics for TGI Fridays, Café Rouge, Bella Italia and other restaurant brands, as well as a number of high-end hotels. The secret ingredient is that we really get to know our clients, their business and their guests. We’ve a wealth of restaurant experience and knowledge coupled with a deep understanding of how technology enables guest engagement. We don’t really do tech-speak, we talk about what you want customers to see, do, feel – and go from there. Adactus mobile solutions include ordering, payment, booking, location finders, menus, loyalty rewards, vouchering – in whatever combination works to better serve your guests and grow engagement with your brand. We’ll integrate seamlessly 20

with your existing systems. If the digital experience you offer your guests is not simple or beautiful, it will fail. We design guest experiences that are both simple to follow and beautiful to look at, a pleasure to use. And all the while, we’re gathering data for CRM – so you can get real insight on what different guest groups want from you, and how well they think you’re doing. Through a “single view” of your guests’ behaviours, we’ll help you see patterns in their visits and spending, see which products or services they love (or avoid) and develop an understanding of how your brand fits with their lives. As a result, you can deploy more personalised, relevant and timely marketing campaigns with better ROI than any “one-size-fits-all” campaign can deliver. Our MD, Scott Muncaster, worked with large restaurant brands before taking the helm at Adactus. He believes that, too often, technology is deployed because “we need an app” or “we need a new website” rather than in support of a core business need: “Running a successful restaurant has always been about great food, a venue people want to spend time in, excellent service. Mobile technology - because it is with guests before, during and after their visit - can help restaurants evolve and improve all three.”

Running a great restaurant is all about the food, the venue, the service. Having the right technology is essential for all three.

EAT. DRINK. SLEEP September 2017 Deliver gift vouchers in style this Christmas with GiftPro’s market leading technology Giving the gift of a stay at a favourite hotel or a delicious meal out is an increasingly popular way for people to show they care. Whether it’s a birthday, wedding or anniversary present, or a gift to thank hard-working colleagues for their efforts, a gift voucher is a thoughtful solution that the lucky recipient can use whenever they feel like celebrating. Christmas, however, is by far the busiest time of year for gift voucher sales. The Christmas rush starts in earnest in early November, but by December you can expect to sell around ten times more gift vouchers than usual – which presents a great opportunity for hospitality businesses.

Gift vouchers – especially for experiences, such as hotel, restaurant or spa visits – are increasingly being purchased online, which means the quality of your online store is pivotal to the success of your gift voucher sales strategy. The most effective online stores provide a seamless shopping experience for your customers – one that integrates perfectly with your company’s main website while also complying with today’s digital standards – and this is where GiftPro can help.

“I can’t recommend GiftPro highly enough. They are constantly looking at how to improve the functionality of their online stores so they are as easy to use as possible. The transition went remarkably smoothly, and since switching, our Christmas voucher sales more than doubled year-on-year.”

You don’t need to take our word for it though! Several successful and inspiring new clients have recently switched to GiftPro (including Lime Wood and THE PIG – who are repeatedly named in The Caterer’s Hoteliers’ Hotels top 10), and every new client has seen their sales increase compared with their previous system. Recent survey feedback also revealed that our clients are extremely satisfied with their GiftPro experience to date (with an average score of 9.4/10). GiftPro recognises the clear need for a user-friendly, efficient and modern gift voucher management system for hospitality brands – one that enables you to maximise e-commerce sales and see definitive returns on digital marketing investment. To find out more about GiftPro, come and see us at stand 7082 – we’ll be providing live demos to show how our system works, and we’ll be happy to answer your questions about how we can help you prepare for a successful festive season.

SUZIE WILKINSON JASON ATHERTON - THE SOCIAL COMPANY

Booking a meeting room online can be just as simple as booking a bedroom

hy does it seem so difficult to book a meeting room? I can book almost any type of bedroom on a hotel's website but it is rare to be able to book a simple meeting room with some refreshments without entering into a complicated contract. The ability to book a meeting room as quick and easy as a hotel bedroom seems hard to find. When we spoke to industry colleagues, they told us not to worry; technology will make meetings obsolete; social media, video conferencing, conference calls are the way forward. We disagree… There are some things that are just better face to face, things tend to get done, stuff happens. You can read body language, you tend to get a greater level of participation (who knows what level of multi-tasking is going on during a voice conference call!); and we get a chance to remind ourselves that it is just great to meet people! We can do almost anything on our smart phones but book a space to have a

Everything else has moved on, where is the platform for meeting rooms? This was part of a blog we wrote a few years back, fast forward to 2017 and we are now launching Kruto at Hotel Tech Live. replacement and maintenance costs are also significantly reduced, as is any disruption caused by constantly having to replace bulbs. Of course, every establishment is different and there are many considerations to factor into your savings calculations, including the cost of energy consumption in a particular area, the size and layout of the building, the number of light fittings and bulbs, and the length of time during which they will be illuminated. Based on these inputs, realistic savings can be calculated, as well as the length of time that the initial investment will take to pay back.

LEDs have another chat about lighting LED technology has evolved significantly in recent years, but sadly its reputation has not kept up with the pace of change. However, a reluctance to make the switch to LEDs could prove costly for restaurant, bar and hotel owners alike. By exploring some of the major benefits of modern LED lighting and where the market is heading, those involved with hospitality design may just be convinced to give this misunderstood tech a second chance. What you think you know about LEDs... It’s fair to say LED lighting hasn’t always held a favourable position within the hospitality sector - and with good reason. Historically, LED bulbs have emitted a harsh blue light that couldn’t be more inappropriate for restaurants, bars, hotels, or indeed any venue looking to achieve a relaxed atmosphere. Thankfully, most LEDs that exist today are a far cry from those of old. LEDs have evolved almost beyond recognition in recent years, incorporating the best technology to allow for much greater control over both interior and exterior lighting. Greater dimmable range - one of the biggest issues with old style LEDs was the limited dimmable range that they were able to offer. Nowadays however, the light levels of most LEDs can be adjusted right down to as little as 5 or 10 percent, giving venue owners the ultimate control over their lighting. Adjustable colour spectrum - being able to adjust the colour of a light to suit a range of different situations at various times

42

But, as with most things in life, you do get what you pay for; a cheap bulb is unlikely to deliver the same performance as a bulb that has a proven record of providing high performance, functionality, and longevity. Whilst the upfront cost of these bulbs may be a little higher - just a few pounds difference per bulb in some cases - the extended lifespan will more than make up for the initial outlay. Out with the old, in with the new

Reducing energy consumption and running costs is a constant priority for every business, but achieving this should never come at the expense of aesthetics, especially where brand throughout the day is becoming increasingly uniformity is key. There’s a misconception within the hospitality industry that updating important for venue owners; a warm light may be ideal for setting the mood for guests, an existing lighting set-up to LEDs can compromise this, whilst also proving to but will be of little benefit when it comes to cleaning the premises out of hours. Being able be costly, disruptive, and generally not to switch between warm and cool light means something that needs to be prioritised. However, this simply is not the case. venues no longer need to compromise one for another. Firstly, the cost of a LED retrofit project is, in a Uncompromised brand consistency - lighting sense, self funding, and can be spread across as many stages as necessary. For example, a plays a critical role in a venue’s branding, venue may opt to roll out a phase one retrofit from the style of the fixtures and fittings, in areas of highest energy usage first, and use through to the colour of light. For multithe energy savings from this to fund the next site businesses, this is a challenge, as two phase, and so on. buildings are rarely the same. The hyper control-ability of LEDs allows for uniformity and consistency across multiple locations, ensuring that the experiences your guests receive meet their expectations, no matter where they are. Big on flexibility, light on the wallet Within the hospitality sector, on average 25% of a business’s electricity costs come from lighting. This presents a huge opportunity for cost savings by switching to more energy efficient lighting solutions. This is where LEDs really shine; they can offer energy savings of 80-90% over traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs, and up to 50% savings over fluorescent tubes. Modern LEDs also have a significantly longer lifespan than traditional bulbs, lasting up to 2 or 3 times longer than the majority of fluorescent tubes, and over 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Given the typical lifespan of a modern LED bulb is up to 50,000 hours (that’s over five and half years!),

This practice is common within larger venues, as it provides an affordable way of investing in a lighting solution that will save a lot of money the long-term, without the daunting upfront cost. Secondly, in order to ensure minimal disturbance to the running of a business, LED retrofits are most commonly done outside of trading hours, be that overnight or early in the morning. Thirdly, many traditional bulbs will soon to be obsolete, as part of the EU’s light bulb phase out initiative. In 2009, the EU began phasing out a large number of inefficient incandescent and halogen bulbs in favour of energyefficient alternatives, and September 2018 marks the final phase of this process. Whilst older style bulbs will be available until stocks diminish, there’s no time like the present to upgrade to LED and start enjoying the benefits.

And if that’s not convincing enough, LED technology is set to evolve even further, with several new and exciting trends in the pipeline. Hypercontrol lighting, which gives guests complete lighting control at their exact location, be it at a table, area of a bar, or hotel room, is one example

of an exciting lighting trend to watch throughout 2017 and beyond. Switching to LEDs needn’t cost a fortune nor be a chore, but it does need careful consideration. EAT. DRINK. SLEEP September 2017

The importance of working with trusted suppliers, and how to avoid being duped! Having been established since the 60’s, the industry’s favourite furniture carpet and panel hire company, Europa International (obviously!), has had a front row seat to a number of most memorable historic events… think moon landings, royal weddings and, of course, the Age of Aquarius. And whilst many such ‘moments’ have certainly left an impression on the funfocussed, family run firm, there is no denying that nothing, and no one (not even Michael Jackson and the release of Thriller in the 80s) has had quite the same impact on the business as the invention of the Internet. After all, whether you love it or loath it, it’s here to stay, and there is simply no escaping it. Here, industry old hand and Europa International’s event and marketing manager, Helen Lowe, talks to us about the inevitable role that online now plays in putting on a ‘do’, as well as the importance of having a trusted relationship with your suppliers in order to ensure that what you order is what you get! Unless you’ve spent the last decade or so firmly in denial about the advancement of all things tech, chances are you now engage with the online world on a daily basis. Managing certain personal and professional tasks via your phone, your laptop, your tablet and your [insert whatever new-fangled device is fashionable at the time of reading this article].

valuable time, if you ask me. I mean, can you imagine reverting to the days of paper, pen and vintage dial phones? But with every great convenience bestowed upon us (anyone else still totes blown away by the fact that you can now order a takeaway without having to speak to a single soul?) comes equal proportions of chaos. Let’s assume for a moment that we now use the internet to source suppliers and event partners in the same way our young folk use Tinder (which, for the record, I have absolutely zero first-hand experience of… but I am told!), whereby people rely on a description, and perhaps an image or two, to make a pretty important decision… To meet, or not to meet. The problem is, who’s to say that either picture or profile is an accurate reflection of the person (or product, to bring it back to the matter at hand) in question! Consider this, for example. You receive a brief from a client who is looking to host a wintery-themed event and you turn to your old pal Google to help you search for relevant suppliers.

You place an order before giving yourself a pat on the back and moving on to the next task in hand. Fast forward several months and the big day has arrived. In less than 24hrs you’ll be giving the grand tour of the venue to your (perfectly pleasant if not rather demanding) client. Check list (digital, of course) at the ready, you are poised to do what you do best… EVENT MANAGE! Fast forward several more hours and disaster has struck. The lovely looking products you ordered have arrived and are a little less 21st Century and a little more Victorian Vintage (and by that, I mean tattered and worn). You see, getting the right relationship in business is pretty fundamental when it comes to ensuring that everything goes to plan. In this thoroughly modern age anyone can claim to be anything they want, and if you’re not careful you could very well end up ordering yourself a lovely looking 6ft blond with cracking legs that turns out to be a beech coloured table with folding legs… or something equally as far removed from your original intent!

A caterer that can deliver an entirely ice-inspired menu, an entertainer that is skilled in the art of, umm, ice sculpting, and a furniture hire company with the kit that’s going to pull the whole thing together and leave the guests amazed (in a good way, of course). So, whilst it might be tempting to do it all online, just remember that not everything Putting it into event industry expert You rattle your way through various is what it appears to be. Working with context, you may well be beholden to websites – dismissing and shortlisting as trusted suppliers and industry friends a digital to do list, reliant on e-mails to you go – before settling on a rather funky may, in the long run, turn out to be much coordinate venues, suppliers and staff, and looking business that promises to provide cheaper, and an awful lot less stressful! no doubt browsing leading search engines you with everything your heart desires. to source the products that will make your From red carpet to red swivel stools, For more information visit: guests’ eyes POP! display stands to branded reception desks. www.europainternational.com/edsa All rather productive uses of one’s very

How to prevent slip and trip claims that could cost £100,000s

September 2017

By Douglas Dale, specialist business resilience manager, AXA UK While employee slips and trips have long been a problem for businesses, perhaps a growing worry for owners of hotels, hospitality and leisure businesses is injuries to the public. Slips and trips suffered by hotel guests, regulars at bars and gym users are on the increase and can be expensive, with many claims costing hundreds of thousands of pounds and some even topping £1m. According to the Health and Safety Executive, slips and trips are the cause of half of all accidents suffered by members of the public and more than 95% of major falls can result in broken bones. You might think that protecting against slips and trips is a simple exercise in risk management but there are many steps – above and beyond keeping the floor dry and reacting quickly to spills – that can be taken to help keep the public safe. Using the right cleaning products on your flooring, for instance, is essential. Many businesses employ local cleaners or cleaning companies and do not have any direct oversight over the cleaning products used. Most flooring manufacturers recommend certain cleaning products that help prevent making the floor excessively slippery. Contact the manufacturers of your flooring to find out which products are best and then have a cleaning specification drawn up for the type of floor you are using. Meanwhile, slip resistant flooring, especially for gyms, swimming pools and any other businesses where wet flooring can cause issues, is certainly something to consider. Floors, especially those that are hard or glossy can be slip tested to gauge what risks they pose and – if appropriate – can be treated to prevent slips and falls. The rise in the number of slips and trips have caused an upturn in the number of fraudulent, staged accidents, which often involve organised gangs who seek out vulnerable premises for easy pickings. If you ensure your CCTV is working properly and there are no blind spots you can catch fraudsters in the act and defend yourself against spurious claims. It might seem a bit drastic but, if you have found that many customers have had accidents on your promises, reconsider the layout of your major spaces. The active layout is incredibly important. Many pubs have short podiums and slightly raised areas of flooring which can be a major trip hazard – especially is your regulars have had a couple of drinks. Finally, consider your lighting. Some businesses rely on mood lighting for ambiance but all owners should think long on hard about the visibility of their customers. Areas that contain slip and trip hazards should be appropriately lit to prevent injury and any space that you want to keep dimmer should be free of any steps or inclines that may cause slips and trips.

What does your brand sound like? We all build playlists. We even tailor them to suit a particular need or occasion. But how should we curate music and remain on brand when our venue sees shifts in direction throughout the day? James Luck, commercial director for soundjack, explores this very dilemma. First things first, if you are not playing the right music in your hotel, bar or restaurant you are doing absolutely nothing to empower your brand. The solution sounds simple. Play music and you’re on to a winner. The truth is, however, you’re not even half way there as the wrong music could devalue your brand and cost you custom. Technology is key, too. And the right mix of having technology and the curation of music that “defines your brand” are key to maintaining customers and driving sales. With soundjack you are able to do just this and remain current, legal and have the flexibility to adapt. Your customers can also have added benefit of technology at their fingertips, and can influence track selection via the soundjack app. Identify your brand persona The first thing that needs to be established is your brand personality, or persona. What does it look, feel and

64

more importantly sound like? This can be defined from your decor, your vibe, your look and even your menu. If you are serving light and airy cuisine then your playlist should also be light and airy. We have honed our curation skills over many years and have a whole raft of playlists ready to go. But, we’ll also collaborate with you to produce the right sounds. Remember, your brand could be the most valuable asset you own. John Stuart, former chairman of Quaker Oats, is famously quoted as saying: “If this business were to be split up, I would be glad to take the brands, trademarks and goodwill and you could have all the bricks and mortar - and I would fare better than you.” He couldn’t have been more accurate, albeit I believe the goodwill he spoke of comes from getting the brand persona spot-on in the first place. It demonstrates how crucial your brand is and its sound should not be taken lightly. Identify your audience Ok, so we can’t always be certain who will walk through our doors on any given day but by creating the right brand, or adapting it even, will allow us to build up a picture of our regular, or more crucially, our loyal customers. And, are we delivering what they came for?

On doing so, it will become apparent that you wouldn’t play hip-hop burger joint playlists in an à la carte establishment, and vice versa. Likewise, your audience could shift its persona throughout the week or even the day – the after-work drinks crowd become the mid-evening diners – and with modified, bespoke and curated music to suit a changing clientele, soundjack allows you to change mood subtly. Marry them… It sounds so simple and, to be honest, as a concept it is. That’s where soundjack is so adaptable and is why, as a solution, it is becoming the go-to technology for forward thinking venues, restaurants, hotels and bars. Your brand and your audience need to feel at one together. And, by curating the right playlists, at the right times, to suit your audience there and then at that very moment, you’re keeping it “on brand”. Or, to lift someone else’s words again as they say it so much better than I, Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, said: “Your brand is what other people say about you when you’re not in the room.” Make sure the gossip’s good. RESTAURANTS RESTING ON THEIR LAURELS WILL NOT SURVIVE THE DIGITAL AGE An extensive survey of 1,500 consumers to establish their expectations when it comes to ordering in a restaurant has been carried out by Ordamo, the company behind interactive menu experiences for diners. Table service is, without question, an absolute consumer expectation. In fact, almost every diner (99%) expects table service when visiting a restaurant for dinner. It’s a similar story for both the breakfast (83%) and lunch (96%) day parts.

Similarly, 55% find it a nuisance not being able to order a drink mid-meal with ease. Daniel Potter, CEO, Ordamo commented: “Consumers have never had so much choice when choosing to dine out in a restaurant. It comes as no surprise that they are now turning to digital platforms to enhance their dining out experience. Potter concluded: “Armed with digital menus, operators have the ability to fight food envy, which 88% of those surveyed admitted to suffering from. “Operators can upload images and videos for each menu item, which 62% of consumers believe would reduce the likelihood of them getting food envy. Similarly, operators should be thinking about personalising the customer journey, as 27% of consumers would like to be greeted by their name, 27% would like an operator to remember their preferred table sitting and 15% would like to receive email notifications when their favourite dish is on the menu. What this tells us, is through the eyes of the consumer, customer experience is just as important as the food on the plate. What’s more, operators can test the water and easily measure the success of any technological changes implemented as a result of the feedback economy boom, as two in five consumers (40%) would like the ability to leave feedback after their meal.” For further details about Ordamo’s new interactive tablet-based menu platform, visit www.ordamo.com or call 020 7388 7773.

Straight To The Sauce Straight To The Sauce is a regional chef recruitment agency. We established our firm with the intention of helping fellow chefs achieve their full potential and helping restaurants and kitchens find the best talent in the UK and beyond. In an industry that’s facing an ever-increasing shortage of hospitality staff, we understand that connecting with the right chefs is a vital ingredient for any business’s growth and success. For many kitchens, finding the right balance of staff can be a difficult process, putting stress and an extra workload on existing team members. This can sometimes overflow into negativity and bad customer feedback, causing a loss of revenue that can be devastating for any business. ‘Straight To The Sauce’ is an independent boutique agency, which means we don’t charge our clients over-inflated consultancy fees. We take pride in being able to spend time focussing on our individual candidates’ strengths and qualities, matching them with our clients’ needs. We always make sure that we place our chefs in the right position, rather than just for filling a vacancy at a minute’s notice. We want to help our chefs’ careers progress, so they can continue to flourish and feel passionate about their trade. All of our hospitality packages are specifically tailored to suit your affordability and budget, as we know that no kitchen is the same. Are you ready to cut down on hiring costs and recruit the ideal chef for your restaurant? Call or email us today.
